“Sound is probably one of the most prevalent things that we focus on with our children at Operation Smile. And you know, they're so thankful that they have, they work as hard on their homework for speech therapy as they do in school, right? And, you know, as both of us sort of being maybe teased and bullied in school, maybe we were actually, excited about doing our homework. And maybe we did study a little bit harder, and we did our homework. These kids are amazing pupils when they know that they're getting this free therapy to help optimize their speaking, and then you go back a year later and then you hear the kids again, and you understand every word that they say. It just puts a smile on your face.” – Mark Climie-Elliott This episode is the second half of my discussion with CEO and Chief Smile Officer of Operation Smile Canada Foundation Mark Climie-Elliott as we talk about Mark's work with Laura, a particularly memorable patient who's gone on to make a positive influence of her own, the time and effort that building language skills can take even after a successful cleft-palate surgery, and more about Operation Smile's plans to open a hundred new hospitals around the world over the next five years. This conversation is being released during Podcasthon, so thank you to Jeremie and all the wonderful staff there putting this initiative together. And if you'd like to learn more about Podcasthon, and maybe participate in it next year, be sure to check out podcasthon.org. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available and what the newest audio chats will be about. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. (0:00:00) - Operation Smile Volunteer Opportunities and ImpactThe second half of our conversation starts as Mark tells us about how people can reach out to Operation Smile and the need for volunteers on every level. “We are always looking for trained and skilled pediatric specialists,” he says, “in anesthesiology, in plastic surgery, specifically if you have cleft specialty, we're looking for educators.” We also talk about Laura, an Operation Smile patient who's continuing to make a positive impact. “There's Laura,” he recalls, “seventeen years old, telling them that they don't have to worry, ‘Look at me.' And so she shared the story of her journey and the parents, all of a sudden, like those tears that were running down their faces became tears of joy.”(0:08:20) - Stories of Resilient Cleft Lip PatientsMark and I talk about our own experiences with bullying, and how it impacts the children Operation Smile works with. He tells us more about the organization's anti-bullying efforts and the hope that working with young people has given him. “When I look at these next generations that are now coming together with better acceptance,” he says, “with better acceptance, with what I call different lenses, you know, and while bullying and teasing still exists and it still needs to be addressed, there are ways in which students can get involved.” We discuss how sound plays a pivotal role in recovery and developing underdeveloped language skills, and the reward of seeing...

If you've been following our social media, you might already know that Talking Taiwan is participating in the Podcasthon which is a global movement calling on as many podcasts as possible to dedicate one episode of their show to a cause of their choice. The idea is to release these episodes simultaneously, from March 15-21, 2025 and by doing so this will create a massive and international wave of inspiring audio content. We are proud to represent Taiwan in the Podcasthon and to dedicate this episode to FAPA, The Formosan Association for Public Affairs. FAPA was established in 1982, during Taiwan's 33rd year of martial law. In this episode you'll soon learn about all of the important, hard work that FAPA does in order to advocate for Taiwan in the U.S. For many Taiwanese Americans, friends of Taiwan and supporters of democracy, FAPA's work will probably resonate with you. Here's something that will hit home especially for Taiwanese who have immigrated to the United States. Did you know that before 1994 Taiwanese Americans were forced to list "China" as their place of birth on U.S. passports? I'm old enough to remember this happening to my parents and some of my relatives. This misrepresentation fueled a policy campaign by FAPA advocating to correct this oversight and affirm the rightful identity of Taiwanese Americans. As a result, Taiwan was allowed to be listed and recognized as a place of birth on U.S. passports. This is just one of FAPA's lasting achievements and an example of how FAPA is a leading voice for Taiwan in America. If this is the first time you are hearing about FAPA you might be wondering about FAPA's name and where it comes from. Once upon a time, Taiwan was known as Formosa. The name goes back to the Portuguese who named Taiwan “Iha Formosa!” which means Beautiful Island when they discovered it in the 16th century, back when Portugal was known for its exploration prowess. But even knowing this, I still wondered why Formosa or Formosan was instead of Taiwan or Taiwanese, so I asked around FAPA's current President Su-Mei Kao who shared some stories that Taiwanese Hokkien speakers who are listening to this episode are going to be able to appreciate. The early founders did try to come up with a name that used Taiwan, the Taiwanese Association on Public Affairs, but the acronym, TAOPA or when pronounced in Taiwanese Hokkien “TAOPA” sounds like “help hit” and then a shorter alternative, TAPA, “TAPA” sounds like the word for a Spanish appetizer. It turns out, the acronym for The Formosan Association for Public Affairs, FAPA when pronounced in Taiwanese Hokkien “huapa” sounds like “calling to hit or attack.” The name has stuck and has served the organization well. Last July while we were at the Taiwanese American Conference, we sat down to interview FAPA's Executive Director, Anny Hsiao, President Su-Mei Kao, and Vice-President Chia-chun Chung. Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: Su-Mei Kao, Vice President Chia-chun Chung's connection to Taiwan How and why Executive Director, Anny Hsiao, President Su-Mei Kao, Vice President Chia-chun Chung each got involved in FAPA The 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis and Taiwan's first direct presidential election FAPA's major accomplishments and achievements FAPA's Passport Place of Birth Campaign (1992-1994) that allowed the Taiwanese to list Taiwan as their place of birth on U.S. passports How has FAPA's work changed since it was founded in 1982 How U.S.-Taiwan relations have changed since FAPA was founded FAPA's programs and initiatives Why it's important to change the name of TECRO (Economic and Cultural Representative Office) Why Taiwan should not have to compete at the Olympics under the name “Chinese Taipei” How Taiwan should be allowed to compete in the Olympics using the flag and anthem of its choice FAPA's mission FAPA's Song Yea Lee Memorial Fund FAPA's most famous intern is Hsiao Bi-Khim, Taiwan's current Vice President What happens during FAPA's annual national advocacy training How overseas Taiwanese are in a unique position to advocate for Taiwan Anny, Su-Mei and Chia-chun's hope and vision for the Taiwan American community How to get involved with FAPA or to donate Related Links:

If you follow the podcast on social media, you'll have seen me talking about True Crime South Africa taking part in an international event to raise awareness for charities all over the world. From the 15th of March until 21st of March podcasters all over the world are dedicated one episode in their feed to the Podcasthon. We got to select a charity we wanted to highlight, and I picked Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust because sexual violence is a topic that is terrifyingly prevalent in so many of the cases I discuss on this podcast and we desperately need to be having more conversations about this topic. I first aired the interview you'll hear today on the podcast in 2022. And it was such a valuable conversation about so many important topics including consent within relationships and other rarely discussed issues. The interviewee in the podcast is Ronel Koekemoer. She is an incredible human I've had the privilege of meeting through my work over the last six years. At the time of this interview, she worked for Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust. She has since left, but she is still hugely supportive of the organisation and Ronel is still working in the gender-based violence activism space, furthering her education in the field and working on incredible projects. https://rapecrisis.org.za/ https://podcasthon.org/ (24-hr trauma helpline 082-821-3447) (Support the show on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/truecrimesa) (Support the show on PayPal https://www.paypal.me/truecrimesa) Instagram · Pinterest · Facebook · YouTube · Twitter · LinkedIn

Y'all, this is very personal, and I'm so happy to have some of my closest friends join me to chat up our special place, Growing to Give. Growing to Give is a climate-friendly, volunteer-driven, nonprofit farming operation in Brunswick, Maine, that grows certified-organic vegetables for donation. I invited my friends Karin Sorensen, Robin Knight and Mary Aveno to help me to chat up our favorite non-profit where we all had the honor of helping to grow organic produce to donate to local food pantries to offer some highly nutritious produce to our less food secure neighbors. We all met there, and became fast friends, and more like family in the same purpose. We missed each other when we were absent, and celebrated every day we were together, and we did some great work (they still do, but Karin and I moved away), and have helped to grow and donate over 100,000 lbs of food! There are several other volunteers at Growing to Give - too many to gather for an episode and everyone get a word in, but that's how the magic happens.Growing to Give began as a dream of property owners Patty Carton and John Newlin in 2015, and 2017 was the first year officially growing, and Robin and I were the first 2 volunteers with Theda, the OG Farm Manager, with 1 Rimol greenhouse, and now it's a well-oiled machine of hundreds of volunteers annually, several hoop houses for growing, as well as farm skills workshops, elderberry workshops, and an annual Farmyard Jam fundraiser. It's a very special place of fun, healing and family. “Anyone who needs surgery around the world will be able to do it and get it and survive from it. And we're making significant impacts by delivering cleft surgery care and by educating and training more and more people each week. The numbers just increase and we're about to... launch something very special as this podcast is being aired, where we're going to really build and strengthen one hundred district hospitals around the world.” – Mark Climie-Elliott This episode's guest is the CEO and Chief Smile Officer of Operation Smile Canada Foundation. Operation Smile is one of the world's largest volunteer-delivered global medical charities, serving children born with cleft conditions in low and middle-income countries. Prior to joining Operation Smile, he spent more than forty years serving in a variety of leadership roles in the non-profit sector, children's rehabilitation, and international hospital start-ups in the Middle East. His name is Mark Climie-Elliott, and you'll want to hear where this discussion will take us. From helping children make sound to his philosophy on the importance of sound and why it matters so much to the kids his Foundation helps, there's a lot to cover. But I was extremely honored to help get the word out about this very worthy charity, and I hope, after you've listened to how passionate Mark is about this cause, that you'll check them out too. This conversation is being released during Podcasthon, so thank you to Jeremie and all the wonderful staff there putting this initiative together. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. (0:00:00) - Sound, Surgery, and Changing LivesOur conversation begins with Mark's early memories of sound, an experience that may have been as memorable for his neighbors. “The first time sound really got into me,” he recalls, “was when I found the pots and pans underneath the counter and I found the wooden spoons. Oh and let me say, sound resonated not just from our home but right through the neighborhood.” We discuss how Operation Smile began back in 1982, and just how serious, and even life-threatening, the need for cleft-palate treatment options in the developing world has become. “It was then that both Dr. Magee and Kathy realized that there are so many people around the world,” he explains, “that don't have the benefit when they get sick and need surgery to actually be able to access it. It's just not there.”(0:11:24) - Surgical Program and Patient CriteriaWe talk more about what causes a cleft lip and the enormous impact it can have on children's speech, health, and nutrition. “Cleft lip and palate are some of the world's highest birth anomalies,” he tells us, “they can happen, we say one in every three minutes. A child is born with either a cleft lip, a cleft palate, or both, or one in every 700 to 1,000 live births.” He shares some of the challenges of treatment through multiple...

Between 1999 and 2011, 17 Salvadoran women were sentenced to up to 40 years in prison after experiencing miscarriages, which were shockingly classified as aggravated homicide. This episode unpacks that outrageous reality, raising questions about how miscarriages (spontaneous abortions) can even be treated as crimes and why the government chose to prosecute rather than protect these women in a healthcare crisis. We speak with Lina Lopez, an abortion activist with Abortiondata.org and Viva Futura who shares her insights from her experiences as an abortion doula in Colombia, a country that has faced significant restrictions on abortion rights. The goal? To shed light on the stigma surrounding abortion and advocate for a narrative that places women's health and autonomy front and center.Check out the shownotes for resources and more!Takeaways: In El Salvador, the shocking reality is that women can face homicide charges for miscarriages, which raises serious questions about healthcare and justice. Abortion stigma is a global issue, deeply rooted in societal views of womanhood and autonomy over one's body, and it's time to challenge these norms. Data shows that legal restrictions on abortion do not prevent the procedure but rather lead to unsafe practices that endanger women's lives. Conversations about abortion should be grounded in empathy and respect for individual experiences, emphasizing that every story matters in this discourse. Sally Fellers is the founder of the David Fellers Healing Art Foundation, and also my grandmother. She started the foundation after the death of my uncle David Fellers, who spent his life trapped in his disabled body, yet radiated love and happiness. The foundation helps bring medical and lifesaving support to those less fortunate, mainly in Nicaragua and Guatemala. Medical equipment like wheelchairs, walkers, medications and even mattresses and ramp installations are among the types of support that my grandma and her foundation have been able to provide. But that doesn't happen without the help of donations from generous people like you of course. So please, for my birthday go listen to this interview to learn more from my grandma about how giving to others will bring you more abundance than you can ever imagine. If you feel pulled to donate to the David Fellers Healing Art Foundation or want to learn more please do so at the website below: CLICK LINK TO DONATE BELOW %100 PERCENT PROCEEDS GO TO CHANGE A LIFE!! https://www.healingartfoundation.com/ I hope this inspires you to go make someones day better and give a little more than you take! ~Xo Dr. Des Find Sally on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Sally.Fellers/ ANNOUNCEMENT—-------- NEW APP PELVIC FLOOR, CORE & MORE DOWNLOAD NOW--------------------- RESTORE is my first 12 wk online signature program hosted inside my new platform that is hosted on my new APP Pelvic Floor, Core & More! Co-Host Georganne Chapin (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/intact) This very special episode is part of Podcasthon.org going on this week. It's an international effort to raise awareness for charities of podcast hosts' choice. I am thrilled to participate, and I have chosen to highlight Intact America, which is the foremost campaign in the USA against circumcision of male infants. Georganne Chapin is the Executive Director of IntactAmerica.org. She joins me for a frank and sometimes shocking discussion that will serve to give any and every man 20/20 foresight about foreskin. So what inspired Georganne to become such an activist for a men's cause, and why did she write her book, This Penis Business: A Social Activist's Memoir? Why is the USA basically the only country left on earth that still cuts boys? I mean, given that female circumcision is universally considered mutilation, why is the situation with boys any different? What were the weird myths that brought about the perceived need to circumcise boys to begin with, and how are doctors finally starting to speak up against it? Apart from the obvious pain and trauma needlessly inflicted upon babies, why is circumcision a bad deal for men for our entire lives? What are we missing out on by missing our foreskins? And how is the procedure just another cog in the medical industrial complex? This podcast indeed sheds necessary light on a very real problem that receives FAR too little attention, let alone outrage. The first step is education, and the next step is--of course--leaving our own sons intact. In this episode of True Tales From Old Houses, host Stacy Grinsfelder highlights the powerful work of the Descendants Project, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the heritage and environment of the Black descendant community in Louisiana's river parishes. Through grassroots activism and historic preservation, the organization works to protect their ancestral land and challenge the environmental injustices that threaten their community. Later in the episode, Stacy revisits a 2020 interview with Bill Chapman. Bill is on a deeply personal journey to uncover the names of enslaved individuals connected to his family's historic property, Enon Hall. By giving them back their names, he seeks to honor their memory and acknowledge their humanity. This special episode of True Tales From Old Houses is part of Podcasthon, a collaborative effort bringing together podcasters to highlight nonprofits and charitable causes.
