Beth Meets Airline Captain Mark Hardcastle and learns: How the air force academy put Mark on the path to a future in aviation. What’s Mark’s favorite plane? (It’s the Cadillac of planes)… Mark explains “The magic of the 4th” How do we respond when things challenge us? Mark’s got 60+ years of inspirational stories he’s gathered and shares both on stage and in his book, The Symphony of Your Life – Restoring Harmony When Your World is Out of Tune About Mark: Mark graduated from the USAF Academy in 1982. After nine years as a pilot on active duty including multiple combat missions during the Persian Gulf War, he left the military to join a commercial airline. In addition to flying B-737s around the country, Hardcastle spends time in the Rocky Mountains and serves on the artistic staff of the Colorado Children’s Chorale. He lives in Centennial, Colorado, with his wife and four children. About how Mark’s book came about: Mark Hardcastle recognized years ago that patterns were developing around events in his life. Sometimes it was good stuff; often not-so-good. But in the end, everything always seemed to work out. Was that just a matter of chance? Or was it something he could rely on? After several years of journaling about that reality, Mark broke his neck in a mountain biking accident near Moab, UT. An event like that has the effect of powerfully focusing one's attentions, and today he travels around the country inspiring groups of all sizes to lives that aren’t over-complicated. He teaches us to use 3 simple steps to create significance in our lives, then he shares the glue that holds it all together! His book, The Symphony of Your Life – Restoring Harmony When Your World is Out of Tune, is a 3-time 1st-place CIPA award winner, and it’s available in print at Amazon.com or in your favorite e-book format. He joined the British Army in 1983. Mark passed the world-famous Commando course in 1990 and while posted with the British Commandos experienced the stresses of operations during the first Iraq Conflict. While serving with 29 Commando Regiment as the senior instructor, running the Commando Training Wing, Mark was the first person to initiate structural change to the way soldiers were trained for the commando course. His work in this field culminated in the design of the Performance Development Systems; a holistic and robust approach to maximize real-world performance for organizations, coaches, and athletes. Following several years of running, designing and quality controlling “train the trainer” courses for the Military, Mark turned down a promotion in order to leave the forces to commit to working on PDS full time. He has spent over 25 years researching and developing effective learning and adherence systems to help coaches and trainers maximize the performance of the individuals and teams they are working with. In 2006 Mark was awarded the Member of the British Empire (MBE) by her Majesty the Queen for his work in developing the system. Mark believes in a “practitioner” based approach. He soon identified that many theories that may look good on paper or in controlled environments are not so effective in the “real world”. PDS is all about providing a positive sustainable performance impact on the “shop floor”. In the Veteran community, there are people you hear of and hear about over and over but never meet or engage with. Mark Rockefeller was on my radar for years. I heard about Street Shares, the company he co-founded, when they first started. I never had the opportunity to interview him for my former programs, so he made the short list when we launched This Week at VA. Just a couple weeks ago, I finally got the opportunity to talk with him. I visited Street Share's cozy space in Reston, VA and talked with him about serving in the Air Force, being an entrepreneur, Veteran owned businesses, and much more. About Mark: Mark began his career as a military officer, and later as an attorney. Following service in Iraq, Mark worked briefly on a pro bono micro-finance project in Africa before joining the prominent global financial services law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP. His law practice focused on securities, financial restructuring, and international investment disputes. Inspired by his experience in Africa and a desire to reinvigorate small businesses in the United States (particularly veteran-owned small businesses), Mark left the law firm in 2013 to co-found StreetShares. He holds a B.S. in Finance, and advanced degrees in Finance and Law. Mark provides strategic leadership and vision to StreetShares and ensures our talented team has what it needs to serve our customers. Mark's favorite American Main Street is Main Street, Breckenridge, CO.
