This week we welcome back Stuart Armstrong (@stu_arm) to the podcast. Stuart is the Head of Coaching for Sport England and the host of one of our favorite podcasts, The Talent Equation., He spends his days helping to elevate the coaching profession, develop educational pathways for grassroots coaches, and so much more. This is his third solo visit to the podcast (Episodes 16 and 113). Prior to Sport England, he was the Player Development Manager for the Rugby Football Union. He is one of the world's top experts on player development pathways and skill acquisition, and has helped thousands of coaches in the UK create better learning environments and develop deeper relationships with their players. His sports coaching experience is in golf, cricket, field hockey, rugby, and soccer, and to this day he is coaching 14 year old boys in rugby and cricket. He leverages the knowledge gained from the various sports he has coached to help create multi-sport, player-focused training programs that assist athletes in not only developing solid skill foundations but great off-field skills to help them succeed in life. In our conversation today we touch on a variety of topics, ranging from developments in coach education to whether sport is fundamentally good or not. #247 Manchester United's Tony Whelan and Tom Statham: Our Most Important Job is Protecting Childhood

Tom Statham and Tony Whelan have a combined 60 plus years coaching and leading the young players in Manchester United's Academy. Tony started out there as a schoolboy, eventually signing professional terms and playing for Man United, Manchester City, and in the US in the old NASL. He has been at United since 1990 in a coaching capacity, Head of Academy Coaching, and currently in an advisory role. With experience working under managers from Sir Matt Busby to Sir Alex Ferguson, Tony is deeply rooted in the history and culture of United, and has guided hundreds of players from the youth ranks to the pros. Tom Statham is a long time friend of the podcast, and has been with Manchester United for nearly 30 years, currently working with the U9-U11s. Current Manchester United players such as Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay all started as young players with Tom and other coaches at the Cliff, United's legendary training ground. In our conversation today, we dive deeply into the history of the club, and the vital importance of youth coaches in protracting the childhood of our young athletes. We discuss being a life coach first, and a sport coach second. And we talk about the massive impact we can have on the lives of our young athletes on and off the field. This is a very special conversation for me, and reaffirms my belief that our influence is never neutral. Today's Podcast is brought to you by the 2021 Way of Champions Conference. During that time, he also served as president of the Disney ABC Television Group and president of ABC News. Like many recreational coaches, he noticed that there were few if any resources to help the busy parent coach as he or she travelled from work to the practice field. So, he founded MOJO (@yougotmojo). Today we speak about the founding of the company, the need to help our recreational coaches more so than our top level coaches, and how we can make sports for children age 4-14 better.  MOJO is on a mission to make youth sports more fun and magical for everyone – one kid, one coach, one family at a time. Launched in February 2021, MOJO is a robust digital platform that empowers parents who coach youth sports to bring world-class training to the largest pool of players in the world – kids aged 13 and under. Winner of the Webby Award for Best Sports App of 2021, MOJO believes that youth sports has the power to transform lives, not just for the kids on the field but the coaches and parents on the sidelines. MOJO is committed to equity, inclusion and helping to level the playing field for kids everywhere. Is the way we coach based upon the latest science, research, and best practices of how children learn? Or is it based upon how we were coached growing up? In this fantastic interview, Dr. Richard Bailey (@DrDickB), Head of Research at ICSSPE, separates fact from fiction and discusses some of the common mistakes that he sees coaches of all levels making around the world. He sheds light on what is missing in the coaching profession and the prevailing myths that cause us to approach athletic coaching in the wrong way. He talks about the need for coaching to rely on real science more than it currently does, the fallacy of coach training at the macro level, and what it would take to become a more professional field. He also digs into his research about the dangers of overpraised athletes and the big difference between leaning and training. Hint: it is not about drilling skills, it is about presenting problems. Tune in to hear this smart, humorous, and hard hitting conversation with one of sport's foremost experts. Bio Richard Bailey, the Head of Research at the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education, is a former teacher in Primary and Secondary Schools, teacher trainer, coach and coach educator. Dr. Jean Côté (@JeanCote46) is professor and Director in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen's University at Kingston (Canada).  His research interests are in the areas of children in sport, coaching, positive youth development, and sport expertise.  Dr. Côté has published more than 130 papers on a variety of sport psychology and coaching topics and 50 book chapters. His work is among the most widely cited in academic papers in this area. He has delivered over 50 keynote addresses at major national and international conferences, well over 100 invited presentations, and nearly 300 conference presentations.  Dr. Côté, in collaboration with Dr. Ronnie Lidor, has completed the first comprehensive book on talent development in children's sport which was published in 2013 by Fitness Information Technology. In our discussion this week, we talk about the critical importance of creating positive youth sport experiences before we worry about long term athlete development. We also discuss our distaste for the words "soft skills" and some advances in coaching education that have started to focus on feedback, relationships, connection and other attributes outside of technical, tactical and physical development.  Way of Champions Conference 2021 This weeks podcast is brought to you by the 2021 Way of Champions Leadership Conference, August 21-22, being held virtually this year. Registration closed August 1, but you can email John at Changing The Game Project in case we have a late opening. #232 Wes Brown: Manchester United's 2x Champions League and 5x EPL Winner on his Journey from Pickup Games to the Pros

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2021 54:57

When we talk about being a champion, not too many people in professional sport can claim to understand what it takes to get to the top of the game like Wes Brown. Brown loved taekwondo and playing pickup games in the park as a kid, and didn't join his first soccer team until the age of 10. But from there he blossomed, joining Manchester United at age 12, turning pro at age 16, and eventually winning 2 Champions League titles (1999, 2008) 5 English Premier League titles, 2 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and making the PFA team of the year in 2000-2001. He eventually played over 300 EPL games for Manchester United and Sunderland before finishing his career with a stint with Blackburn and in India.  In our discussion today, Wes talks about the influence of role models in close proximity (we spoke about this with Rasmus Ankersen a few weeks back), as players such as Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Davis Beckham, Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand and Cristiano Ronaldo all influenced his journey as a player. We speak about playing with Ronaldo, and marking Lionel Messi. We touch on his boyhood sport experiences, as well as the massive impact legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson had on him and so many players. Finally, we talk about pressure and Simone Biles, and get Wes's take on the inner game and what it takes to perform in front of millions, even billions of people, on the world's biggest sporting stage.   Way of Champions Conference 2021 This weeks podcast is brought to you by the 2021 Way of Champions Leadership Conference, August 21-22, being held virtually this year. Registration closed August 1, but you can email John at Changing The Game Project in case we have a late opening. When Jerry first told me about this book about a year ago I was so curious about the title and how he would weave the principles of Buddhism with leadership, culture building and competitive sport. He did it ever so well, so good in fact that Steve Kerr signed on to write the forward.  In our chat today, we discuss the origin of the title, the Mamba Mentality and Buddhism, selflessness, servant leadership, mastery, and so much more. You all know Jerry always brings the high energy and amazing insight, and our chat this week does not disappoint. He has been a speed coach for the NY Giants and Jets of the NFL, and trained UFC fighters, Olympians, Navy Seals and Army Rangers. He has also built an amazing business Training for Warriors, and speaks all over the world through www.CoachingGreatness.com.  His new book is the follow up to the hugely successful Coach to Coach, except this time we fast forward a few decades and catch the two main character in vastly different phases of life, but still coaching and learning from each other. In our talk today we discuss the 3 B's of a great culture (Beings, Beliefs and Behaviors), we talk about the five culture killers, and one of my personal favorites, how to avoid the "culture vultures." He is also the co-director of football for Brentford FC of the English Premier League and Chairman of Champions League club FC Midtjylland of the Danish Super League. His 2012 book The Goldmine Effect is an incredible read and was one of the books that inspired me at the beginning of my Changing the Game Project journey, so to say that I am thrilled to have Rasmus on is an understatement.  His new project is a film called "The Hockey Miracle in the Middle of Nowhere," the true story of how the small town of Herning, Denmark (pop. 50,000) sent five players to the NHL in a ten year period. No Danish player had ever made the NHL before! In that same period, the US cities of Chicago and Detroit, hockey hotbeds, each sent less than 5 players to the top of the ice hockey world. How did they do it? In our talk today, Rasmus and I break down the major principles outlined in the film and speak about how you might apply these same ideas in your own community so you don't just ID the talent that shouts, but you can identify and patiently develop the talent that whispers! Please connect with Rasmus at www.RasmusAnkersen.com and grab yourself a copy of The Goldmine Effect. This week on the podcast we delve into an incredibly important topic, the mental health and well-being of our athletes. With the recent withdrawal of one of the world's top tennis players, Naomi Osaka, from the French Open due to depression and social anxiety, this topic has been in the news a lot recently. There have been two distinct camps; one that says you make millions of dollars so suck it up and play, and the other that recognizes that just becasue these athletes are so exceptional in one area of their life does not mean they are not struggling in others. One of the people leading that discussion recently on CNN and the BBC is our friend Dr Jarrod Spencer. Dr. Jarrod Spencer (@jarrod_spencer) is president and founder of Mind of the Athlete, LLC, a sports psychology company committed to improving the emotional health of athletes (www.MindOfTheAthlete.com). He is the author of Mind of the Athlete: Clearer Mind, Better Performance and the co-author of the book the The Sky Is NOT The Limit: Discovering the True North for Your Life's Path.  Dr. Spencer serves as the sports psychologist for several professional teams and individual professionals athletes.  He also works closely with NCAA teams, including teams at Princeton University, Lehigh University and University of Maryland. He maintains a private practice wherein he provides one-on-one coaching for athletes and business leaders. He has been featured in CNN, BBC, USA Today, New York Daily News and ESPN Radio. Dr. Spencer is a frequent guest on WFMZ Morning News in the NY/NJ/PA region. He also starred in the TV Show “What the Heck Were They Thinking?!” with former Heavyweight Boxing Champion Larry Holmes. Additionally, Dr. Spencer created and starred on the TV show Mind of the Athlete.  He has recorded 13 CDs, as well as over 500 podcasts and videos. Dr. Spencer has extensive training and experience in the field of health and sports psychology.  Before earning a Doctor of Psychology Degree from Argosy University, formerly known as The Illinois School of Professional Psychology, he earned his Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology from West Chester University and his Bachelor's Degree in Psychobiology from Lafayette College. Dr. Spencer professionally trained at The Jersey Shore Medical Center, Northwestern Neuropsychological Association, and The Diamond Headache Clinic. He is a licensed psychologist in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan and Virginia. Dr. Spencer is also a member of The American Psychological Association, Pennsylvania Psychological Association, and Lehigh Valley Psychological and Counseling Association. Influenced by views in neuroscience, psychoanalysis, Christianity, and peak performance literature, Dr. Spencer has a heart to assist athletes in attaining peak performance through sound emotional health. This week, in order to celebrate Christian Pulisic becoming the first American male to win the Champions League, we dig into the archives for our interview with his father Mark. Mark is a former collegiate and professional player and coach, and our talk took place soon after Christian completed his $73 million transfer to Chelsea of the English Premier League. Since then, Christian has hit some incredible heights, and experienced some devastating injuries and extreme disappointment, yet came through it all to become a Champions league winner with Chelsea one week ago.   Today we speak about a variety of topics, including what it was like to raise Christian, how many times Mark and his wife Kelly said no to great opportunities, how they limited his competitive team practices to 2 sessions per week, dealing with pressure, Christian's goodbye in Dortmund, and so much more. We trace Mark's professional career and his short stint coaching in Germany and what were the major differences with coaching youth players in the US. His answer might surprise you.   This is a great conversation with some terrific insight into the childhood and early sports career of one of world soccer's brightest stars.   Other Highlights from the Discussion: How important is it to allow kids to develop their own passion for the sport? How do you know if your kid REALLY loves the sport? Is there a way to increase accuracy without losing creativity in children? Parents need to be able to say “No” to coaches. Does the tournament culture create “slow” players? What is missing here in the US, where and when do our kids fall behind?   Connect with Mark Pulisic Twitter https://markpulisic.com/ Mark's Podcast: Soccer Unplugged Welcome to our New Sponsor GoodSport! They recently wrapped up a 9th place finish in Serie A with Sampdoria, punching far above their weight and budget during the most trying of seasons.  In our chat today, Carlo and John discuss how players and the game have changed from his playing days, what are the qualities of exceptional coaches such as Ranieri, how to connect with players at any level, and how young coaches transitioning from their playing days must pay their dues, and "taste the mud" as he says. What is great about Carlo is that not only has he coached internationals in front of massive crowds on the world's biggest stage, but he has also coached JV high school and youth soccer in the US, so he has an appreciation of the game at every level. #220 Surviving and Thriving During Tryout Season with John O'Sullivan and Jerry Lynch

This past week, John has been assisting his local competitive soccer club with their annual tryouts, and like most years, tryouts are a trying time! How do you balance the "as many as possible, as long as possible" philosophy with facility shortages, lack of trained coaches, and the fact that competitive teams and leagues require different levels of commitments than some are willing to make? How do athletes prepare mentally to perform their best? How can parents support their kids during this time? How do you support the child who gets cut or moved to a new team? And how can coaches be humane and empathize with their players and parents while at the same time make the difficult decisions they are called to make? We have never covered this in depth on the podcast before, so we figured we would give it a shot this week. Please let us know what you think! This week's podcast is brought to you by our friends at Sports Refund. Many of you probably buy trip insurance, every winter I buy ski pass insurance, to make sure that if I get injured I can get my money back on that expensive investment. Well, many of us spend thousands of dollars on our kids sports club fees, but what if they get hurt? In many cases you cannot get your money back, but now with Sports Refund you can. For just pennies on the dollar, you can make sure that if your child gets sick or injured and misses a month or more you can get your money back, or your club can get paid. It’s a great product, just go to www.sportsrefund.com/game and get your free quote, and if it sounds good you can either get your club to sign up, or you can purchase on your own.  Way of Champions Conference 2021 This weeks podcast is brought to you by the 2021 Way of Champions Leadership Conference, August 21-22, being held virtually this year. #213 How to Intentionally Create Extraordinary Moments for Your Athletes with NYT Bestselling Author Dan Heath

Every once in a while we do a flashback to an oldie but goodie from the archives, and we decided to do that this week because it was spring break here in Oregon, and I was headed out with some friends to tech free cabin up by Mt Rainier in Washington, and I realized last second I needed a book to read. So I grabbed one off the shelf that I had not read in quite a while, yet it is one I talk about at almost every single presentation I do. It is called The Power of Moments by Chip and Dan Heath, and this book is truly required reading for coaches. Why? Everyone has these defining moments in their lives that they vividly recall. But these moments are not an accident. Science actually tells us which type of moments people are most likely to remember in any experience. Some are extraordinary and some are terrible. As coaches, we do not get to choose which moments our athletes recall, but we do get to choose the moments we create in order to ensure what we leave our athletes with are exceptionally positive moments. Dan Heath joins us on the podcast to discuss how these moments arise and how we can help create them. This episode originally aired back in November 2017, but it is so good I wanted to replay it for you this week. Bio Dan Heath is a Senior Fellow at Duke University’s CASE center, which supports social entrepreneurs. At CASE, he founded the Change Academy, a program designed to boost the impact of social sector leaders. Dan is the co-author, along with his brother Chip, of three New York Times bestsellers: Decisive, Switch, and Made to Stick. Their new book, The Power of Moments, was my favorite book of 2017.  Amazon.com’s editors named Switch one of the Best Nonfiction Books of the Year, and it spent 47 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list. Made to Stick was named the Best Business Book of the Year and spent 24 months on the BusinessWeek bestseller list. Their books have been translated into over 30 languages. Previously, Dan worked as a researcher and case writer for Harvard Business School. In 1997, Dan co-founded an innovative publishing company called Thinkwell, which continues to produce a radically reinvented line of college textbooks. Highlights Dan’s new book Power of Moments and how we are all defined by special moments “Wise Criticism” when high standards and assurance are used in feedback The tightrope of being a mentor/coach who allows players to take risks What have you failed at this week? The quest to find Peak Moments The Magic Castle – An “average” motel with Overwhelming experiences Transitions – the importance of the “first day experience” The FOUR qualities of defining moments The profound obligation of a coach to “get these moments right” The Tarantula study How do you create more moments of pride in sport? #212 Early Specialization, Diversification, and the Battle to Provide Healthy Youth Sport Experiences with Dr. Joe Baker and Sandy Mosher

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 21, 2021 74:04

This week on the WOC Podcast we ae so excited to welcome back Joe Baker from York University in Canada, along with one of his PhD students Sandy Mosher @sandymosher. You can follow Joe at @bakerjyorku on Twitter. This was a very challenging podcast, as you all know what an advocate I am of sport sampling and Joe Baker did much of the early research in this space. Joe’s research focuses on optimal human development, largely to understand how someone gets to, and stays at, the highest levels of performance. He is one of the worlds foremost experts in talent identification and skill development, and his book Developing Sport Expertise is a must have for any talent developer. He looks at various psychosocial and environmental factors influencing athletic skill development across a range of sports with a goal of  building better theory/models and construct superior learning environments. Sandy Mosher is a PhD candidate studying under Joe at York, and her recent article with Joe and Jessica Fraser-Thomas entitled “Is it too early to condemn early sport specialization” has caused quite a stir as you might imagine, so I knew I had to have them on to discuss. Sandy’s research in this area has found that we have potentially been making some false assumptions around early specialization, namely that if early specialization is bad, early multi-sport participation must be good. She says this is not necessarily the case as far as the evidence goes, and that there are actually many barriers to multi sport participation, and that some of the things we accuse early specialization of causing, such as injury, may be attributable to poor training more than specialization itself. Like I said, it is controversial stuff. In our talk today we speak about many of these problematic areas, such as what exactly is early and what exactly is specialization, as we actually have no definition. In other words, if we go simply by the research, we cannot say that specialization is bad, nor can we say that diversification is good. HOWEVER, what is really clear after this talk is what is really bad for our kids are youth sporting environments that take away enjoyment, autonomy, and connection, do not teach multi movement skills, and over train athletes at far too young an age. It's a fascinating talk, so I hope you are ready to listen closely to this one. This week on the podcast we are joined by someone who knows a ton about building and sustaining championship environments. I am talking about Brett Ledbetter. Brett is a performance consultant, author and speaker. His work focuses on character development, priority alignment, behavior management and self-awareness. He’s authored four books: What Drives Winning, What’s Really Important, What Drives Winning Teams and What Drives Winning Environments. Brett has also given three TEDx talks: "What Drives Winning," "Building Your Inner Voice" and "How to Stop Comparing and Start Competing." He is the co-founder the "What Drives Winning" conference with hall-of-fame coach Becky Burleigh, producing five conference events with top minds in sports. Brett currently works with several Division 1 athletic departments––including Gonzaga, Oregon, Florida and Oklahoma State to name a few––that hire him as a thinking partner for athletic directors, coaches and athletes. He also applies his high-performance training within education, military, sport and business sectors. Today Brett and John cover a multitude of topics, including above the line and below the line behavior, the five pillars that drive winning environments, and the importance of coaches defining, implementing, and modeling core values for their teams. The big takeaway though our talk and his work with top coaches such as PJ Fleck, Geno Auriemma, Brad Stevens and others: anything that is expected is defined! To learn more: Visit www.WhatDrivesWinning.com to view free conference videos, get the books, enroll in the workshop or sign up to be part of the Coaching Lab, a community of coaches that meet twice per month. This week we welcome back Lindsey Wilson (@lindseypositiveperform) of Positive Performance Training and host of the Inner Game Podcast. She was on with us back in Episode 112, and she is so incredible we had to have her back on. Lindsey was an amazing athlete, an All-American basketball player at Iowa State, a WNBA draft pick, a professional player for many years, and now is not only a mindset and inner game coach for some top, top teams, but her goal is also to help coaches at every level not be intimidated by helping their athletes with the mental game. As she says, she wants to move you from “Ummmm, I don't know how to be a mindset coach!” to “Okay, it’s not perfect but I can do this!” This is often the biggest frustration coaches have - not being able to really reach someone that is struggling mentally. It’s also the thing most coaches talk about as the most rewarding… when it goes well. But how do you actually sit down and help an athlete or a team with their mindset? Get ready to take some notes as we discuss how to overcome our fear of helping our kids with the inner game, a quick breakdown of what a session can look like, and since we all coach the inner game anyway, usually after the fact when things go south, why not learn how to be proactive about it, right?
