In this episode we heard from: Dr. Cerrene Giordano is a dermatologist and Mohs Micrographic surgeon at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York. She specializes in treating skin cancers, particularly in patients who are high risk such as those who have received organ transplants, have weakened immune systems, or a genetic predisposition to skin cancer development. Her expertise includes skin cancer surgery, wound reconstruction, and the management of skin cancers such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma, to name a few. Dr. Giordano is also involved in research aimed at improving pain management following dermatologic surgeries and exploring advanced imaging techniques to enhance surgical outcomes. Kent Bressler is a retired RN who was diagnosed with FSGS in 1984, and received a living donor transplant from his brother Kip in 1987. Kent is an active advocate for preemptive kidney transplant and has on the recommendation of NKF worked closely with the DoD and PCORI as a consumer peer reviewer. He will also be participating in the development of the new NKF Patient Network serving on the Data Input and Integration Committee. He has been an active hill advocate for the NKF for six years and was the proud recipient of the 2017 Richard K. Salick Advocacy Award. After getting out of the Marine Corps, Rob Bracero found himself stuck, detached from purpose, struggling with chronic pain, and missing the community that used to push him forward. He's not alone. A lot of veterans find that once the structure of military life disappears, it's easy to fall into isolation and let their physical and mental health slip. That's where Warrior Strong comes in. In this episode, Rob shares how Warrior Strong helps veterans rebuild strength and connection through virtual and in-person fitness programs designed specifically for the veteran community. Whether it's yoga for back pain, breathwork to improve sleep, or strength training that takes service-related injuries into account, these programs offer more than just a workout. They bring back a sense of tribe. Rob also opens up about how this work helped him personally reclaim his sense of direction. We talk about the real-world impact of veterans who went from nearly giving up to running marathons again, Vietnam vets trying yoga for the first time, and the power of being seen and supported. If you've been putting off taking care of yourself or think group workouts aren't for you, this conversation might change your mind. We have published 120 episodes since 2019. For this new season, we thought it would be a good idea to look back on some of the highlights of our conversations and select 20 episodes that resonated with veterans, service members, military families, and the civilians who support them. But first up, you'll hear from some of the folks at Home Base who wake up every day with the same mission in mind, no matter what they do at the Center of Excellence in the Navy Yard and beyond. For this episode, you will hear a brief conversation with the Admissions Coordinator at Home Base, Zachary Morin. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Zach spent two years serving with AmeriCorps in the Miami-Dade Public Schools, working with middle school students on literacy, social and emotional development, as well as civic engagement. Upon completing his service, Zachary returned to New England to lead the College Ready Communities program in Northern Rhode Island. Here, his work included holistic programming for vulnerable youth populations and overall community engagement initiatives. He also has a creative/performative side, which he will talk about.Following my conversation with Zach, you'll hear an episode from 2023 with the Pulitzer Prize and Emmy-winning cartoonist, Garry Trudeau. Garry is also an Army Commander's Award for Public Service honoree. In this conversation, Garry tells us that not only did his dad and grandfather both serve, but they were also both physicians. He recounts an eye-opening visit to Walter Reed Medical Center, with stories of injury and resilience that not only informed his storytelling but have had lasting impacts on him. As a big fan of author Sebastian Junger, he discusses the innate need for the tribe to survive, and explains a bit of his creative process. Part Two will come shortly.Run To Home Base: Join Ron and his team and sign up individually or on another team at the 16th annual Run To Home Base on July 26th, 2025, at Fenway Park! Dorothy Graham O'Dell lost her father, Don in 2021 after years of chronic pain and a fierce cancer fight, then became power‑of‑attorney for her grandmother, who died earlier this year. Layered grief could have sidelined her, but instead she launched the Unstoppable Overcomers show, wrote two resilience‑driven books, and founded a charity golf event that now fuels patient‑care grants. In this episode, Nick and Dorothy explore the tightrope of caregiving, the guilt of anticipatory grief, and the stubborn joy that can bloom in hospital hallways. Dorothy recounts 4 a.m. drives for pain treatments, the gratitude of hearing her dad's laugh on her wedding day, and the way dementia reshaped her bond with her grandmother. They also dig into purpose: why Veterans' mental health advocacy fuels Dorothy's work, how fundraising can keep a loved one's name alive, and why a simple podcast rating can save a stranger in the dark. NGI's managing editor of markets, Kevin Dobbs, interviews Pinebrook Energy Advisors' Andy Huenefeld, managing partner. They delve into supplies in storage, production, weather-driven demand and export activity – with a special focus on prices in the Midwest and East. The latest U.S. Energy Information storage report showed overall inventories were 6% above the five-year average, but surpluses in the Midwest and East were notably leaner after June heat waves in those regions. While the winter heating season is far off, natural gas storage is in a markedly different situation than last year. There are likely to be ample supplies stocked for next season, but with producers able to fast respond to cash market price signals and LNG feed gas demand bumping as export facilities ramp, Huenefeld details a dynamic season ahead.

Over one week has passed since President Trump signed the "big, beautiful bill" into law, and he is now urging Republican Senators to support a package that would codify his proposed cuts via the Department of Government Efficiency. Meanwhile, House Republicans have already approved the package. This week, the House will take up several measures seeking to make the U.S. the leader in financial technology, cryptocurrency, and digital assets innovation. House Majority Whip Congressman Tom Emmer (MN-6) joins the Rundown to discuss the passage of the President's "big" bill and the upcoming "crypto week." On July 13, 2024, an attempted assassination of President Trump took place at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. One year later, the country continues to wrestle with the question: how could such a breach have occurred? Veteran journalist Salena Zito witnessed the event firsthand, which she recounts in her new book, Butler: The Untold Story of the Near Assassination of Donald Trump and the Fight for America's Heartland. She joins the podcast to examine how the Butler incident marked a turning point for America, igniting an "awakening" in Middle America and a pushback against the political status quo. It won't come as a surprise to you that hundreds of thousands of veterans across America are affected by trauma—some from their time in military service, though not all—and yet, their needs remain deeply misunderstood by many of us who haven't served. Not all veterans experience post-traumatic stress disorder, and yet many do—in fact, some 29 percent of veterans who served in Iraq experience it at some point in their lives. Others face issues similar to those of the general population, from mental illness to substance abuse and even childhood experiences. The need is not one-size-fits-all or even most, and the path to healing looks different for everyone too. That's what Chaplain Nate Lyons from The Salvation Army Veterans and Family Center in Beaverton, Oregon, helps us understand on this episode. As an Iraq war veteran himself, Nate now serves as chaplain and activities coordinator for some 72 veterans and their families who are on their own journeys toward healing. And today, Nate is taking us inside this special place of veteran care. Whether you're a veteran yourself, love someone who has served, or simply want to understand how some approaches to trauma recovery are changing lives, this conversation is going to challenge how you think about healing, hope and the power of community.
