The two World Wars, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War...these are some of the 20th Centuries greatest conflicts, yet they pale in comparison to the Emu War, a skirmish that erupted in the state of Western Australia in 1932, pegging farmers and soldiers of the Australian Army against an indigenous species of flightless bird--the emu. Feathers will fly in this informative (and sometimes amusing) episode!

In his award-winning book of short stories, Surrender, Brian O'Hare delves into the complexities of the American hero myth and its impact on his own life. As the son of a larger-than-life Marine officer, O'Hare was drawn to the allure of military service, seeking to emulate his father's legacy. However, after witnessing the devastating effects of war on his father's health, O'Hare began to question the validity of the hero myth. He realized that the idealized image of the American hero, often portrayed in Hollywood films and popular culture, was far removed from the realities of combat. Brian O'Hare is a graduate of the US Naval Academy, former Marine Corps officer and Persian Gulf War veteran.  Currently, he's an award-winning writer and filmmaker living in Los Angeles. His work has appeared in War, Literature and the Arts; Hobart,Electric Literature and others, and has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes. Most recently, National Book Award winner Phil Klay awarded Brian Syracuse University Press' 2021 Veterans Writing Award for Surrender. Through his writing, O'Hare deconstructs the myth of the team captain and the Marine, exposing the flaws and vulnerabilities that lie beneath the surface. He explores the psychological toll that war takes on individuals, the sacrifices they make, and the lasting scars they bear. O'Hare's journey is a personal one, but it also resonates with a broader cultural shift. As society evolves, so too does our understanding of heroism. The traditional notions of masculinity and military prowess are being challenged, and new definitions of heroism are emerging. In Surrender, O'Hare invites us to question our own assumptions about what it means to be a hero. He suggests that true heroism lies not in physical strength or military glory, but in the courage to face our own mortality, to embrace our imperfections, and to strive for a more just and compassionate world. As O'Hare reflects on his father's legacy and his own experiences, he grapples with the question of what he will pass on to his son. He recognizes that the American hero myth is a powerful force, but he also believes that it is essential to challenge its limitations and to create a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of heroism. Through his writing, O'Hare hopes to inspire others to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery and to question the myths that shape our society. By demythologizing the American hero myth, he opens up the possibility for a more authentic and meaningful definition of heroism to emerge. With her opinions, actions, and even her sense of style, McKinney has inspired both admiration and controversy. McKinney´s political career began unofficially in 1986 when her father, Georgia State Representative Billy McKinney, put her name on the ballot as a write-in. Cynthia McKinney was living in Jamaica at the time and did not take the matter seriously; still, she garnered a large percentage of votes without even trying. Two years later, McKinney ran for and won the seat, creating the first father/daughter combination to serve together in the Georgia State House of Representatives. Cynthia immediately began making her own mark, defying House dress codes for women by wearing trousers instead of dresses. She spoke out against the first Persian Gulf War, and despite being in the House with her father, she often disagreed and voted against him. In 1992, McKinney won a seat in the US House of Representatives in Georgia´s newly created 11th district. She was the first African-American woman to represent Georgia in the US Congress. McKinney became Secretary of her Democratic freshman class and was placed on both the Agricultural Committee and the International Relations Committee. Her gold tennis shoes and braided hairstyle became her trademarks, and effectively raised her profile on a House floor dominated by white men. Though a Democrat during President Clinton's tenure, McKinney voted against NAFTA, showing that she was not one to simply follow the Party line. McKinney worked hard in Washington to clean up pollution in her district and improve its rural roads. During her second term, McKinney earned distinctive committee assignments with the National Security Committee and the International Relations Committee's International Operations and Human Rights Subcommittee. A supporter of a Palestinian State in Israel-occupied territory, she sparked controversy by criticizing American policy in the Middle East. After the 9/11 attacks, McKinney suggested the President might have had prior knowledge of 9/11. The criticism she received from this highly controversial idea probably contributed to her defeat in the 2002 election; however, she ran for the seat again and was re-elected in 2004. Between terms in office, McKinney traveled the country and Europe,

The Army covers up the details and assigns Serling to a desk job, where he is tasked with investigating and determining whether a solider should receive the award for which they were recommended. He is assigned the case of Captain Karen Walden, the commander of a Medevac Huey helicopter sent to rescue the crew of a Black Hawk helicopter. She was killed in the line of duty, saving both the lives of her crew and those of the downed helicopter. The Army, and the White House, wants to give her the Medal of Honor. As Serling interviews the men involved in the incident, he notices inconsistencies in the testimonies of Walden's crew. Some praise her strongly, others say she was a coward. Still others testify to events that cannot be confirmed. Under pressure from both the White House and his commanding officer to authorize the award — and struggling with PTSD from his experiences on the battlefield — Serling resolves to discover the truth of the matter, even if it costs him his career. The tagline for Courage Under Fire was “In wartime, the first casualty is always truth.”You can find Courage Under Fire to rent or buy on demand at Amazon and iTunes.Episodes come out roughly every two weeks, and we'll see you then with an episode on Star Trek: First Contact, the second film starring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. We are thrilled to have as our guest antiwar journalist Chris Hedges. Many who are watching will already know Chris Hedges. Chris covered the first Persian Gulf War in the 1990s for The New York Times, where he refused to participate in the military pool system that restricted the movement of and reporting by journalists. In 2003, Chris gave a commencement speech at the graduation ceremony for Rockford College in which he criticized the then ongoing American imperialist invasion of Iraq. His microphone was shut off three minutes after he began speaking. Crhis had to end the commencement speech short because of the disruptions, which included an additional microphone cut, foghorns, and chants of "God Bless America." Clearly, we are in a completely different period - student antiwar protest movement. In fact, when Chris was speaking on the megaphone at the campus antiwar protest at Princeton University last month, when the campus police and administration prevented Chris from speaking, the students chanted “ let him speak, let him speak!” Chris has long spoken out against the two warmongering parties in the United States, the Democrats and Republicans, and called for a new party for working people. In the 2008 United States presidential campaign, Chris was a speechwriter for Green Party candidate Ralph Nader. Chris also supported Green Party candidate Jill Stein against the Democrat's and Wall Street's candidate, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 election. We need to continue building the momentum of the campus anti-war movement with a nationally coordinated mass protest at the DNC in Chicago in August, and by sharing lessons from campus unions that have passed resolutions and strike authorizations in solidarity with the student protests and against police repression. We also need the rank and file of the labor movement to put forward resolutions to rescind their union's endorsements of Biden. Campus unions should provide a lead to the antiwar movement by calling for a one-day nation-wide strike and walk-out against the war. This is what it will take to end the war- shutting down the profits of the capitalists. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onstrikeshow/support

Welcome back! In our last episode of Absolute Trust Talk, we were joined by expert psychotherapist and certified coach Tess Brigham, MFT, BCC, to discuss the differences between generations and, more specifically, examine the unique dynamics between Baby Boomer parents and Millennial children.  In this episode, we continue our conversation with Tess, focusing on the interactions between Gen X parents and Gen Z children. These two generations are very interesting as Gen Xers were heavily influenced by events like the Persian Gulf War, the women's movement, and high divorce rates. As Tess points out, this generation is a very “figure it out on your own” group. Whereas Gen Zers are true digital natives and have no real concept of life before technology. We hope you will listen in as we talk about how these generations' unique experiences shaped their approach to estate planning. Plus, we share some special insights from real client stories!  Time-stamped Show Notes:  0:00 Introduction 1:19 To kick off the episode, Tess gives us a little background refresher on what types of events and movements had an impact on these two generations.  7:30 One way the younger generations differ from the older ones, in terms of estate planning, is how they consider the possibility of divorce and whether they want to burden their children with responsibility. Listen in to learn more!  10:55 We're likely all familiar with the stereotype that the oldest daughter always gets the responsibility of taking care of her parents, but will this continue with the newer generations?  14:05 At the end of the day, women are biologically and evolutionarily designed to care for family, so perhaps we won't see a change in the oldest-daughter-caretaker stereotype after all. Only time will tell!  15:29 As we wrap up the show, we highlight why it's important to analyze how these heavy conversations play out among generations.

(10:36) Why you shouldn't necessarily look for precision and formal rules about how the world works. We tie this idea into Taoism which we've seen commonly in a few of our other recent reads. The Ottoman Empire, World War 1 and 2, the Persian Gulf War, and how warfare and aircraft carriers changed during these ages.  (41:26) Aviation and its rapid improvements in technology in such a short span of time. (45:07) "Shouldn't we get back to the book?" Nat, Neil, and Adil discuss some of the main concepts from the book, including the pursuit of truth in the world of mathematics. You're never going to fully understand reality, but for some, that's a hard truth that they don't want to accept. (49:44) What does it mean to know, and how can you be justified in knowing something? Remember, a belief can be true while at the same time not satisfying the conditions of logic.  (56:05) Unlike the other mathematicians discussed in the book, Gödel constructed a proof to his theorem that hasn't yet been disproven. Regardless of whether their desires for absolute truth was achieved or not, a lot of the findings are fundamentally useful in many other ways. (1:00:34) We talk about some of the books that we have coming up on the podcast, and throw around some ideas. Which book would you like to see us do an episode on? Let us know here! It's the last full week of our PORTRAITS OF THE ARTISTS theme and we end it with Edward Zwick's dripping military melodrama “COURAGE UNDER FIRE” from 1996. It's a brand-new season of Speakernomics with our brand-new host, Kenneth "Shark" Kinney! Shark is kicking off our new season with John Register, CSP, a paralympic silver medalist, US Army combat veteran, and Certified Professional Keynote speaker. John discusses being an expert in the professional speaking space, how to define one's expertise and the importance of being easy to work with as a speaker.    In this episode, John talks about:  Go Deep Before Going Wide: Define your expertise and go deep into it before trying to cover a wide range of topics. John suggests finding one word that encapsulates what you do and sticking with it to become known in that specific space.  Be Easy to Work With: As a speaker, it's crucial to be easy to work with, especially for meeting professionals and event planners. John shares practical tips such as providing PowerPoint slides promptly, maintaining open communication, and showing appreciation with small gestures like gift cards for the event team.  Active Role in Networking: Actively seek out opportunities to see other speakers and build relationships within the speaking community. Rather than evaluating other speakers, focus on understanding what they do and use that knowledge to make valuable referrals, fostering a supportive and uplifting environment within the industry.   Who is John Register, CSP?  John Register failed to clear a hurdle as he trained for the Olympic Games—a move that led to a tragic accident and altered his life forever.  He shifted his focus and embraced a “new normal mindset.”  The decorated Persian Gulf War combat U.S. Army veteran world champion became a two-time Paralympic Games Silver Medalist, professional speaker, and global influencer.     Register “amputated his fears” and founded the U.S. Olympic Committee Paralympic Military Sports Program.  He authored 10 Stories to Impact Any Leader: Journal Your Way to Leadership Success in Spring 2020 and works with business leaders to hurdle adversity, amputate fear, and embrace a new normal mindset to win life's medals.    The artificial leg he used to win the silver medal is displayed in the Olympic and Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Learn more about your ad choices. On today's show, Alex and Calvin continue to break down the concept of “Manipulation” in rhetoric and political discourse, recapping part one of this series, demonstrating strategies for identifying and critiquing manipulation, and discussing how this kind of large-scale “mind control” is affecting contemporary foreign policy discourse in the US.The term manipulation, as we define it, comes from a school of linguistic and discourse analysis known as Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), which is primarily concerned with the ways language is used to reinforce inequality and power differentials in society. We walk through how the term is defined by CDS scholar Teun van Dijk, from his landmark 2006 article “Discourse and Manipulation.” In it, van Dijk gives us a toolkit for understanding 3 different levels of manipulation: (1) social, which designates the human relationships, power positions, and organizational and political resources required to effect manipulation at scale; (2) cognitive, which designates how manipulative language forms mental models that influence people's thoughts and actions in the world; and (3) discursive, which captures the various linguistic, stylistic, and rhetorical strategies that tend to recur in manipulation. This time, to put this term in context, we analyze an example of discourse manipulation surrounding US foreign policy, specifically as it relates to Israel's ongoing war on Gaza: President Joe Biden's November 18 opinion article in the Washington Post, entitled “The U.S. won't back down from the challenge of Putin and Hamas.” We closely analyze how President Biden uses manipulation strategies straight out of Van Dijk to persuade WaPo-reading liberals to ignore both the US's constant and substantial material support for Israel's war and its own military's history of bloody and destructive imperialism throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and elsewhere in the world. We also note various tactics that the president deploys to naturalize inequality and normalize bigotry, all while touting the US's role as the “essential” peace-loving, freedom-spreading nation. “The U.S. won't back down from the challenge of Putin and Hamas” - Joe BidenLink to Part One of this SeriesWorks and Concepts Cited in this Episode:Azoulay, A., & Ophir, A. We closely analyze the careful manipulations of emphasis and value that Jahanian creates in his discourse, which subtly demonizes student demonstrators advocating for peace and the cessation of violence between Israel and Hamas, while reaffirming the supposedly apolitical “commitments” of the institution he represents.Full Text Version of Farnam Jahanian EmailWorks and Concepts Cited in this Episode:Fairclough, N. It is unclear whether Iran chose the exact date and time of the Hamas attacks, but the detail is irrelevant. The Islamic Republic of Iran has funded, coordinated, trained, and armed Hamas and other proxies for years. Should Israel not definitively succeed in eliminating Hamas, Iran will learn a critical lesson: its strategy works. What does Iran want from this war? Eventually, hegemonic control of the Middle East; in the meantime, derailing normalization between Israel and the Arab states, eliminating any moderate Palestinian political players, and total control of the revitalized Palestinian question in the region. Iran's influence isn't limited to its proxies in the Middle East either – it has an unprecedented strategic alliance with Russia and a growing partnership with the People's Republic of China. So, why the international equivocation on Iran? Sanctions are needed, tightening the loopholes for Iranian financing of terrorist proxies is needed… Iran must pay a price for fomenting this war.Kenneth M. Pollack is a senior fellow at AEI, where he works on Middle Eastern political-military affairs, focusing in particular on Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf countries. Our primary institutions of the conveyance of values have all decayed: the schools, organized religion, the intact household, statesmanship. [This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription. And yes, I do speaking engagements.]You may have missed it in all the Trump indictment hoopla, but late last night, Kid Rock, aka Robert James Ritchie, posted a 35 sec. video on Twitter in which he fired an MP5 submachine gun in the direction of several cases of Bud Light resting on a table next to a lake. I say in the direction of several cases because he seemed to struggle in taking them out.No, I'm not kidding. I'll post it here for your convenience.Mr. Ritchie was apparently upset that Bud Light—whose parent company is Anheuser-Busch—hired Dylan Mulvaney, a massively popular TikTok star, as one of their new brand ambassadors. She's a nice lady and deserves her success. She also happens to be a trans woman, thus the bellyaching from social conservatives.Normally, I'd be worried over Mr. Ritchie's violent gun message concerning the inclusion of trans people — if he were capable of aiming correctly. Alas, he doesn't appear to be much of a threat with firearms. It turns out that worrying about Kid Rock shooting you is kinda like worrying about losing a spelling bee to Donald Trump. It ain't worth the trouble.Because I am a benevolent queen, I've decided to offer some feedback to Mr. Ritchie on how to fire his weapon. You see, despite being a star-spangled patriot, he never actually served in the military even though he was an able-bodied young man eligible to enlist during the Persian Gulf War and the War on Terrorism. So, you could forgive him for not knowing the basics.Of course, it's harder to forgive him for claiming to care about the troops but wearing a hat that honors a five-time draft dodger who called service members that died in combat “losers” and “suckers.”But I did serve in the Army, in the infantry, and I was actually raised in the South around firearms, and as a woman who has fired plenty of assault rifles and machine guns in my lifetime, I'm happy to offer Mr. Ritchie some guidance. As you can see in the video, Mr. Ritchie, no more than 20 yards away from his targets, practically point-blank range with that kinda weapon, struggles mightily to take down the cases of Bud Light. In fact, after his tantrum, two of the cases are still completely upright, barely even touched.Sorry, that's a tad inaccurate because it wasn't just him firing. Although Mr. Ritchie implies in the video that he's the only one shooting, one of his buddies is actually off-camera, just to the right of the frame, firing what appears to be a shotgun — given away by three blasts that nick the left side of the table and land in the lake behind it.So, between the two of them combined, from 20 yards away, well… let's just say these two gentleman should stick to their day jobs.Okay, Mr. Ritchie, some tips:First, always wear eye protection. You never know when the weapon may malfunction, nor guarantee where a bullet casing or excess gun powder or other debris might fly.Ear protection is a good idea, too — especially for a musician who has been known to struggle with pitch. Just looking out for ya.Let's talk about your firing stance. It's garbage. It needs work.Your frame should be facing toward the target, not from the side. Feet shoulder width apart, right foot slightly behind the left (since you're right-handed) about six inches. At the moment, your stance looks like you're golfing, which is a bit ironic given that your shooting skills are… subpar. You wanna keep your weight equally balanced on both feet and flex your knees a bit, something which I would think you'd be eager to do since you haven't flexed a big chart hit in almost 15 years.Your hand placement is alright, but for some strange reason, you got bad chicken wing going on. That's when your firing elbow sticks all the way up and out, making it harder to stabilize the weapon. Bring it into your side. This'll make it easier to aim, especially with the recoil. And oh lord, that aim. Instead of sweeping your line-of-fire across the target, back-and-forth, and hoping something sticks, try holding your firing sight—that metal thingie popping up out of the top of the barrel—at the midsection of the target. Now, fire a controlled burst—that's several rounds—and once you've hit it, move to the next one.Not only will you be more accurate and faster in engaging targets, but you'll save ammo — and whatever fish had the misfortune of being in that lake behind your target where most of you and your buddy's rounds went.Okay, let's talk about the beer. You wasted a good $75—$100 of Bud Light. Now, where I come from, that's a lot of money. You see, actual blue collar families can't just drop a hundred bucks' worth of beer for s***s and giggles. That's a waste. I'm trying to be patient with you on this because I understand you're the furthest thing from blue collar. You grew up on a palatial estate, apple picking and raising horses, because your daddy owned several car dealerships. Your family has wealth: six acres and a mansion with a tennis court, five-car garage, and guest house in lily-white Romeo, Michigan. You're about as southern and blue collar as Mitt Romney.I was raised in trailer parks in Central Texas by actual rednecks, so I hope you'll forgive me for being amused by seeing you struggle to cosplay one of my folks. I promise you it wasn't especially romantic. We had what we had and tried to make the most of it. We couldn't call daddy up and ask for a bridge loan.If you feel I've reduced you to a caricature based on a few things in your bio, maybe it's a sign you should get to know trans folks like myself and Ms. Mulvaney before you reduce us to caricatures based on your own assumptions.Try being a straight shooter for once, Mr. Ritchie.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. The second, from 2002, authorized the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq over weapons of mass destruction that were never found. Are either of the 1991 or 2002 AUMFs still necessary? Back in early 2021, Cato Institute senior fellow Ted Galen Carpenter urged Washington "to abandon its efforts to torpedo Nord Stream 2." His warnings have been proven prescient by Seymour Hersh's recent revelations, which seem to confirm the US government's involvement in the destruction of the pipeline. Many journalists admit behind closed doors that they believe in the US's involvement, yet the media remains silent out of fear of provoking a response from Russia. In his new book Unreliable Watchdog, Ted Galen Carpenter argues that the news media has become a tool for propaganda rather than a watchdog for the American people, leading to a distorted view of U.S. foreign policy and a “garrison state” mentality. He examines the media's willingness to accept official accounts and policy justifications without skepticism, particularly in regards to the Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, the Balkans, Iraq War, Libya and Syria civil wars, and post–Cold War relations with Russia and China. He questions why journalists and social media platforms collaborate with government officials in pushing an activist foreign policy, even when results are questionable or disastrous. Are we repeating the same mistakes with Ukraine as the media cheerleads the escalation of another unwinnable war?

Drivin' N' Cryin' hit the peak of their commercial success with this fourth studio album, Fly Me Courageous.  It was released in January at the same time as the start of the Persian Gulf War, and they benefitted from patriotic associations the title song received.  The album peaked at 90 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The band at the time included Buren Fowler on guitar, Kevin Kinney on guitar and vocals, Tim Nielson on bass and backing vocals, and Jeff Sullivan on percussion.  The album was produced and engineered by Geoff Workman, an English producer who also worked with Journey, The Cars, and Queen.  The name Drivin' N' Cryin' was a reference to the band's fusion of driving rock and roll and a bit of a country twang (the crying).Georgia based Drivin' N' Cryin' had formed in 1985, honing their craft at the 688 Club in Atlanta.  The band released a number of albums and singles prior to Fly Me Courageous which had been successful on college and independent radio.  This album was more rock oriented, as would be their follow-up album, Smoke.  Drivin' N' Cryin' would tour with Neil Young and with Soul Asylum.Drivin' N' Cryin' tours today, and is a great act to see live.Rob brings us this Georgia band this week.  Fly Me CourageousThe title track took off quite literally with the start of the Gulf War.  It was considered a patriotic song and was included in the playlists of many military pilots, even though the song itself is more about confronting aggression than celebrating it.  The band received a number of requests to perform at military bases after the release of this track, which hit number 19 on the US Mainstream Rock charts. The InnocentThis track was also a successful single, and starts with a parody of the US Constitution.  It talks about the discrepancy between politicians providing hand-outs and the desire of people to improve themselves.  "Get used to it.  The innocent."Around the Block Again A deeper cut, this fast paced track has a sound reminiscent of Rod Stewart or the Rolling Stones.  The lyrics reflect hypocrisy in religion, relationships, and music.  Build a FireThis shuffle beat single has a bit of a punk rock feel, and even has a small rap sequence in the middle.  "Bored with the American holstered blues, peace signs on just about everything.  Don't know where to turn or what they say."  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Break On Through (To the Other Side) by the Doors (from the motion picture sountrack "The Doors") Val Kilmer owns the role as Jim Morrison in this movie about the band. STAFF PICKS:American Society by L7 Wayne starts off the staff picks with an all-female punk band, that often gets associated with the Nirvana grunge sound.  This is a cover song originally done by a punk band called "Eddie and the Subtitles" from Orange County, California in the early 80's.All This Time by Sting  Bruce features the first single off Sting's third studio album, "The Soul Cages."  Sting had writer's block for several years after the death of his father in 1987, and many songs on this album reflect the tumultuous relationship he had with his father. It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over by Lenny KravitzJohn brings us a crossover hit that went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The style was inspired by Motown and Earth, Wind & Fire.  The lyrics reflect the marital struggles Kravitz was experiencing with his then-wife Lisa Bonet.Someone to Love by Roger McGuinnRob closes out the staff picks with former Byrds front man Roger McGuinn and a single from his sixth studio album, "Back from Rio."  This is the lead-off track from the album.  It made it to number 12 on the Mainstream Rock charts.  McGuinn used a number of familiar artists on his album, including Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and David Crosby. COMEDY TRACK:Lisa, Lisa (The One I Adore) by Pauly Shore Pauly Shore was all over MTV during the early 90's.

“There are certain folks who are just born with what I like to call a worrier DNA. That is who they are, whether they are a protector or a fighter, but it doesn't mean that you're bloodthirsty or that you hope for war”, says today's guest of the Endurance Cartel.   Mike Scotti joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves while still an undergraduate at the University of Miami, Florida. After graduation, Scotti attended the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and served four years on active duty as an artillery officer and platoon commander in the First Marine Division. He was among the first American troops into both Pakistan and Afghanistan in the Fall of 2001 and was deployed to Iraq in early 2003. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V” for actions under fire and then was honorably discharged.   But, his fighting days were not over yet, as he found himself struggling to survive his post-war darkness. He found solace in helping others get through their own traumas, and while he was attending NYU Stern, Mike founded the Military Veterans Club. Later on, he was a founding Board of Directors member for the military charity Reserve Aid, which has raised over $5 million and assisted over 4,000 veteran families in need.   In hopes of letting go of the past, he decided that the best thing to do is to openly talk about his experiences. He co-produced and starred in the award-winning documentary Severe Clear, using his personal combat footage to chronicle his time in Iraq, and wrote The Blue Cascade: A Memoir of Life after War.   Join Javier Pineda on this new episode, and listen to Mike's story of surviving the real battle, the one raging inside.     In today's episode:   (01:14) Meet today's guest, Mike Scotti, author, filmmaker, speaker, philanthropist, and U.S. Marine veteran; (02:38) Joining the Marines and getting the sense of belonging to something bigger than himself; (07:09) When 9/11 happened he was among the first American troops in both Pakistan and Afghanistan; that's when he shot the footage that later on was used in Severe Clear- a documentary that explores the Marine drive to Baghdad during the 2003 invasion of Iraq; (18:09) There's no place for doubts and fear when you're a Marine- the realities of training for combat and people he would lay down his life for ; (39:25) Finding the right outlet to help him let go of the past, and helping other veterans face their demons and talk about what they've gone through; (48:12) The real endurance test- staying focused when knowing that he was responsible for everyone around him going home alive; (54:51) His father- the man that set the standard in going the extra mile to help others; (01:01:18) Mike's advice- “Look back through your life and understand that sense of perspective, understand the current problems through that lens, and harness the power of discipline”; (01:03:39) Working on releasing a new book and a tv/ streaming series called "Tailspin Finland"; (01:08:53) Are TV shows trying to depict boot camps and endurance training a hoax?   (01:13:18) True family and brotherhood and mottos that marines live by “Esprit de corps” & “Never Above You, Never Below You, Always Beside You”.     Quotes:   “You train how you fight and you learn your lessons very quickly(...) (Marines) train over and over and over again with live fire, with marines who are their brothers and sisters, who they love. (...) That's one of the reasons why the marine corps are absolutely vicious in combat.”   “You're not thinking about politics when you're there. When the bullets are flying, you think about winning the battle which means neutralizing or destroying and killing the enemy shooting at you.”   “A good leader leads from the front, a good leader walks the lines and meets the men, no matter where it is.”   “For me, the will to fight and do all these other things just comes from a love for fellow veterans. It first started with seeing young marines and young soldiers coming back from the war, and there was that little bit of an echo. There's a whole generation of young marines and soldiers who have seen sustained combat that need to talk about it.”   “She died violently. She was at work (...) young, in her 20's, living her life, and somebody flew a plane into her work.(...) I was there to get some payback. People had nothing to do with it but I didn't know that at the time.”   “The movie was my outlet so I didn't blow my brains out, it was my therapy, and I just needed to get it out there.”     Links selected from this episode:   Gen. That is your true identity, embrace it and live it like a good soldier. Greg Munck is the Lead Executive Pastor of Crossline Church in Laguna Hills, California. Pat Toomey (R-PA): Here's what you need to keep in mind, Jake. First of all, this is the oldest trick in Washington. People take a sympathetic group of Americans — it could be children with an illness, it could be victims of crime, it could be veterans who have been exposed to toxic chemicals — craft a bill to address their problems, and then sneak in something completely unrelated that they know could never pass on its own and dare Republicans to do anything about it because they know they'll unleash their allies in the media and maybe a pseudo-celebrity to make up false accusations to try to get us to just swallow what shouldn't be there. That's what's happening here, Jake. 10:40 Jake Tapper: So one of the questions that I think people have about what you're claiming is a budgetary gimmick is, the VA budgets will always remain subject to congressional oversight, they can't just spend this money any way they want. And from how I read this legislation, it says that this money has to be spent on health care for veterans who suffered exposure from toxic burned pits. Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA): This is why they do this sort of thing, Jake, because it gets very deep in the weeds and very confusing for people very quickly. It's not really about veteran spending. It's about what category of government bookkeeping, they put the veterans spending in. My change, the honest people acknowledge it will have no effect on the amount of money or the circumstances under which the money for veterans is being spent. But what I want to do is treat it, for government accounting purposes, the way we've always treated it for government accounting purposes. Because if we change it to the way that the Democrats want, it creates room in future budgets for $400 billion of totally unrelated, extraneous spending on other matters. Senator Toomey on Face the Nation with John Dickerson July 31, 2022 CBS News Clips 4:10 John Dickerson: 123 Republicans in the House voted for this, 34 Senate Republicans voted for it. Same bill. This week, the bill didn't change but the Republican votes did. Why? Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA): Now, the Republican votes didn't change on the substance of the bill. Republicans have said we want an amendment to change a provision that has nothing to do with veterans health care. The Republicans support this. The Democrats added a provision that has nothing to do with veterans health care, and it's designed to change government accounting rules so that they can have a $400 billion spending spree. 6:25 Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA): Honest Democrats evaluating this will tell you: if my amendment passes, not a dime change in spending on veterans programs. What changes is how the government accounts for it. John Dickerson: I understand, but the accounting change, as you know, is a result — the reason they put it in that other bucket is that it doesn't subject it to the normal triage of budgeting. And the argument is that the values at stake here are more important than leaving it to the normal cut and thrust of budgeting. Jon's Response To Ted Cruz's PACT Act Excuses July 29, 2022 The Problem with Jon Stewart on Youtube Clips 00:20 Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX): What the dispute is about is the Democrats played a budgetary trick, which is they took $400 billion in discretionary spending and they shifted it to a mandatory one. Jon Stewart: What Ted Cruz is describing is inaccurate, not true, bulls ** t. This is no trick. Everything in the government is either mandatory or discretionary spending depending on which bucket they feel like putting it in. The whole place is basically a f * ing shell game. And he's pretending that this is some new thing that the Democrats pulled out, stuck into the bill, and snuck it past one Ted Cruz. Now I'm not a big-city Harvard educated lawyer, but I can read. It's always been mandatory spending so that the government can't just cut off their funding at any point. No trick, no gimmick, [it's] been there the whole f**king time. 1:50 Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX): What's the Republicans made clear is, if we leave that spending as discretionary — don't play the budgetary trick — the bill will pass with 80 or 90 votes. Jon Stewart: I don't know how many other ways to say this, but there was no budgetary trick and it was always mandatory. And when they voted in the Senate on June 16, they actually got 84 votes. And you know who voted for that? Ted f*cking Cruz and every other one of those Republicans that switched their votes. There was no reason for them to switch the votes. The bill that passed the Senate 84 to 14 on June 16 has not had one word added to it by Democrats, or spending fairies, or anybody else. It's the same f*cking bill. ‘I Call Bullshit!' Jon on the PACT Act Being Blocked in the Senate July 28, 2022 The Problem with John Stewart on YouTube Clips 3:20 Jon Stewart: June 16, they passed the PACT Act 84 to 14. You don't even see those scores in the Senate anymore. They passed it. Every one of these individuals that has been fighting for years, standing on the shoulders of Vietnam veterans who have been fighting for years, standing on the shoulders of Persian Gulf War veterans fighting for years, Desert Storm veterans, to just get the health care and benefits that they earn from their service. And I don't care if they were fighting for our freedom. I don't care if they were fighting for the flag. I don't care if they were fighting because they wanted to get out of a drug treatment center, or it was jail or the army. I don't give a shit. They lived up to their oath. And yesterday, they spit on it in abject cruelty. These people thought they could finally breathe. You think their struggles end because the PACT Act passes? All it means is they don't have to decide between their cancer drugs and their house. Their struggle continues. From the crowd: This bill does a lot more than just give us health care. Jon Stewart: It gives them health care, gives them benefits, lets them live. From the crowd: Keeps veterans from going homeless keeps veterans from become an addict, keeps veterans from committing suicide. Jon Stewart: Senator Toomey is not going to hear that because he won't sit down with this man. Because he is a fucking coward. You hear me? A coward. 5:15 Jon Stewart: Pat Toomey stood up there — Patriot Pat Toomey, excuse me, I'm sorry. I want to give him his propers, I want to make sure that I give him his propers. Patriot Pat Toomey stood on the floor and said “this is a slush fund, they're gonna use $400 billion to spend on whatever they want.” That's nonsense. I call bullshit. This isn't a slush fund. You know, what's a slush fund? The OSO, the Overseas Contingency Operations Fund. $60 billion, $70 billion every year on top of $500 billion, $600 billion, $700 billion of a defense budget. That's a slush fund, unaccountable. No guardrails? Did Pat Toomey stand up and say, this is irresponsible. The guard rails? No, not one of them. Did they vote for it year after year after year? You don't support the troops. You support the war machine. 7:10 Jon Stewart: And now they say, “Well, this will get done. Maybe after we get back from our summer recess, maybe during the lame duck…” because they're on Senate time. Do you understand? You live around here. Senate time is ridiculous. These motherfuckers live to 200 — they're tortoises. They live forever and they never lose their jobs and they never lose their benefits and they never lose all those things. Well, [sick veterans are] not on Senate time. They're on human time. Cancer time. 8:20 Jon Stewart: I honestly don't even know what to say anymore. But we need your help, because we're not leaving. These people cannot go away. I don't know if you know this, you know, obviously, I'm not a military expert. I didn't serve in the military, but from what I understand, you're not allowed to just leave your post when the mission isn't completed. Apparently you take an oath, you swear an oath, and you can't leave, that these folks can leave because they're on Senate time. Go ahead, go home, spend time with your families, because these people can't do it anymore. So they can't leave until this gets done. Senator Toomey PACT Act Amendment Floor Speech July 26, 2022 Senate Session Representative Mark Takano PACT Act Floor Speech July 13, 2022 House Session 3:38:20 **Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA): The way this country has dealt with toxic exposure has been piecemeal and inadequate. President Biden recognizes this, too. Shortly after he was sworn in, I met with the President about our shared priorities for veterans. Upon learning of my goal to pass comprehensive legislation to help toxic-exposed veterans, the President leaned over to me and talked about his son, Beau, who served near burn pits in Iraq and Kosovo. It might be hard for most Americans to imagine what a burn pit looks like because they are illegal in the United States. Picture walking next to and breathing fumes from a burning pit the size of a football field. This pit contained everything from household trash, plastics, and human waste to jet fuel and discarded equipment burning day and night. Beau Biden lived near these burn pits and breathed the fumes that emanated from them. President Biden believes that con- stant exposure to these burn pits, and the toxic fumes they emitted, led to Beau's cancer and early death. It was during that meeting when I knew I had a partner in President Biden. You can expect a quick recap from Pastor Haris, so for those that back-to-back listen to some of these teachings, fear not, you are simply in a recap. The new stuff will kick in eventually.  Some of the new elements Pastor Harris will bring to light, pertain to the wars that will erupt, judgements that will be released, and finally dad attempting to describe the sheer size of this battle and the immense casualty count that will be amassed.

In this episode Pastor Harris will teach on the Anti-Christ and the various aspects leading up to his identity being revealed. These final two teachings in this series are going to be extremely revealing.  Now, before we continue forward we want to ensure that everyone listening understands that of course Biblical scripture is Biblical scripture, no one can deny that. However, much of what dad teaches throughout this series is his interpretation of what we simply do not know for fact. The truth is…  no one knows.  The scripture tells us that! Truth is that many people have many different beliefs regarding these scriptures and how they can be interpreted, dad's teachings are simply that, they are his translations.  But what I will say about our dad, Pastor Harris, is that he is the most brilliant man we have ever known, and after a lifetime of study, research, debate, history, pondering, and well… prayer, these points we are about to hear are his findings, and his interpretations. All this to say, we thought it was only right to clarify this throughout this series of teachings. Furthermore, anyone is welcome to adopt his stance, support a different stance, or argue their stance.  Speaking of stances, Pastor Harris does touch on one of the long time debated topics in Christian Eschatology.  It has to do with the Great Tribulation and when exactly the rapture will take place. These are broken up into several schools of thought, the Pre-Tribbers, Mid-Tribbers and Post-Tribbers. To you all out there listening… Do you know which group you belong to?  Well, Pastor Harris is about to point out which he group falls in line with and why.   Pastor Harris does a fair job sharing the various stances and why each has merit. We will also hear from Pastor Harris concerning things like “The Great Parenthesis” and the “Two Witnesses”.  He will also give us his thoughts on what are referred to as “The Young Lions” and who they might reference.  Many other intriguing, and otherwise cryptic scriptures will be discussed and hopefully everyone will leave with a better understanding of these apocalyptic topics.
