Long, long ago (last Tuesday), in a galaxy far far away (the North of England) I chatted to one of the hosts of the Spark of Rebellion, a podcast about all things Star Wars, Mr Mark Asquith. Mark's a bit more than a Star Wars stan podcaster, he's one of the founders of Rebel Base Media, Captivate.fm podcasting and the host of the Podcast Accelerator podcast and is kind of a big deal in UK podcasting, often referred to as "That British podcast guy". To me, he's Mr Captivate and a great guy to chat to as someone who gets invited to speak the world over about podcasting and we had a chance to chat about how, why and whether you should be including podcasts in your professional ecosystem too. In this episode: The influence of the Terminator The trouble with taking yourself too seriously Podcasts for content marketing Is better > more? Why you should stop listening to gurus Motivation isn't the answer You should learn SEO Why you should always be yourself Why you shouldn't learn marketing from a podcaster Should you outsource your own show? What Apple say about ratings and reviews Can you be a full-time professional podcaster? You're going to love the answers and I hope you will also be inspired to add podcasting into your professional ecosystem in some way, shape or form. Each social channel has its nuances, benefits and flaws. Twitter is my personal favourite for podcast growth so today I'm sharing a few simple strategies that I employ to build my podcast audience using the platform. Welcome to The Podcast Accelerator, the thrice-weekly show that brings you podcast education, industry insights and straight-talking reactions to podcasting news. I'm your host Mark Asquith, The British Podcast Guy and CEO and co-founder of Rebel Base Media, the podcast tech company that creates the Podcast Success Academy, Podcast Websites, Poductivity, Rebel Base Studios & http://captivate.fm/ (Captivate.fm), the world's only growth-oriented podcast host where you can get your first month of podcast hosting for just one dollar and transfer an existing podcast in, completely free. Thank you so much for joining me on the Podcast Accelerator, remember to tell your podcasting friends that the show is available to listen to for free in any app that supports podcasts. Your next steps I teach podcasting a lot, and usually for free. So, here's what I'd recommend you do next: Watch my free podcasting tutorials on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/captivatepodcasting (https://www.youtube.com/captivatepodcasting) Learn how to launch your own podcast the right way, for free (plus a comprehensive download-and-keep crib sheet): https://www.podcastsuccessacademy.com/ (https://www.podcastsuccessacademy.com) Ask me anything at all about podcasting over on Twitter: https://mark.live/twitter (Mark.Live/Twitter) P.S. you can start engaging with your listeners using AWeber. We all want more "engagement" on our podcasts but the word itself poses some challenges and leaves us fighting for broad strokes of interaction that we just can't scale. But we can fix it. Recommended podcasting tool of the week This is a new segment to the newsletter and to the podcast so I'm starting it off with something that I've used since day ONE of podcasting back in 2013 (or 2012? I'm not sure anymore) and that is my RÖDE Procaster microphone! It's rare that I recommend hardware because my love is more about software and the content/marketing side of podcasting but wow, this mic has served me SO well. I've tried ALL sorts of mics over the years and this one has never let me down. It's an XLR mic so it's not something that you can plug straight into a computer like you can the Samson Q2U or ATR 2100 (all amazing mics) but for the budget, this mic was the best pound-for-pound contender for me and my voice and it could be for you, too. It's a dynamic mic so you have to be up close to it but it will keep a lot of the background noise or echo out of the recording, too. It's https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001IPUJJI?ref=exp_mrasquith_dp_vv_d (£140 on Amazon in the UK) and https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001IPUJJI?ref=exp_mrasquith_dp_vv_d&th=1 ($218 on the US version of Amazon) (which seems a bit weirdly steep considering the exchange rate right now). Are you thinking about starting your own podcast? Do you already have one? Today we have Mark Asquith CEO and founder of Captivate FM – Rebel Base Media. Mark is here to help you gain genuine listeners and get more downloads of your show.Mark quit his day job back in 2005 and started Captivate FM a podcast hosting service that serves thousandsof podcasters around the world. He originally built the platform for his own podcast The Podcast Academy then decided to offer it to others. Today it's used worldwide by droves of beginner and seasoned podcasters. I love the features that Captivate offers. I switched over from Libysn which I was using since 2016 years. I since have moved the shows over to Captivate and couldn't be happier. The best part of Captivate is that they continue to make these awesome features to help the podcaster make their lives that much easier. Here are some of my favorite features:-You can create multiple shows for one price (up to 12,000 downloads). It takes a while to reach that number so youcan be on the beginner plan for a while and still have any number of shows you'd like on that plan.-You don't need to uplevel your plan to get your audience number stats. You'll see them all, and, they break them upfor you in such a way you truly get the real deal on who is listening to your show. -You can "drop-feed" one show into another. and so much more.Want to give it a try? In Episode 160 of the Beyond Adversity Podcast Mark Asquith talks with Dr Brad Miller about the nature of running a business during the challenges of the pandemic. j After working in various positions in technology in his native England for several years Mark started his first podcast based on his love comics in 2013. Before long he was launching his company Rebel Based Media and creating the products Podcast Websites and http://captivate.fm/ (captivate.fm) hosting. When the covid pandemic shut down the world Mark had to make adjustments in his business as did virtually every business in the world. Mark talks to Dr. Brad about the most important factor in adjusting himself as CEO and the whole of business - attitude. It all comes down to enjoying what you do in your business even in spite of extraordinary circumstances; like the pandemic. Mark makes the point that you got to realize that there's no point doing that if you don't enjoy it. Indeed, there is absolutely no point in doing anything at all if you don't enjoy it. If you don't enjoy your business you're not going to give it your best, you're not going to become the expert in it, you are not going to give it everything, you're not going to be happy to stay up working late or to get up working early, you're not going to want to do any of that. So if you're doing something for any other reason than enjoyment, then you're not going to stick to it you're wasting your time. Mark says if you're going to become a business person, make sure you build a business that you enjoy working in. So then when you start to work on it, it can serve you and give you back what you've put into it. Episode 160 is a healthy reminder to the business person facing any adversity that you chose to enjoy your work or not so you might as well chose to enjoy your business. The Beyond Adversity Podcast is published weekly by Dr. Brad Miller and is aimed at helping aspirational professionals crush adverse life events (depression, divorce, debt, disease, death) and emerge to a life of peace, prosperity, and purpose. https://www.markasquith.com/ (https://www.markasquith.com/) https://www.instagram.com/MrAsquith/ (https://www.instagram.com/MrAsquith/) https://twitter.com/MrAsquith (https://twitter.com/MrAsquith) https://www.facebook.com/mrasquith/ (https://www.facebook.com/mrasquith/)

Mark Asquith, founder of Podcast Success Academy, is my guest on this week's episode of Behind The Membership. Mark's membership story is a little different to most, not only because of its position as part of a wider ecosystem of businesses, but also because it has a whole tier that members can access for free! In this episode Mark shares how Podcast Success Academy came to be and what inspired him to build it using the freemium model. He also shares how he's building a community with two very definitive segments who share an interest in all of his products and the challenges he's faced in getting his audience to take action. Plus he explains how he's going the extra mile to give his audience the best learning experience by plugging a gap of knowledge in the podcast industry, without the hard sell… And much more. About Mark: Mark Asquith is a serial entrepreneur who has built several globally successful businesses since he quit his real job in 2005. Billed as the U.K. podcast expert, Mark is CEO & co-founder of Rebel Base Media, a podcast tech and strategy company that ownshttp://captivate.fm ( Captivate.fm), Poductivity, Podcast Websites, Podcast Success Academy & Rebel Base Studios and is well known as an insightful, thought-provoking and actionable podcast industry keynote speaker. He's a wildly approachable Brit, Star Wars/DC Comics geek and believes that good business starts with being good to people. Key Quotes: “It's a fascinating model. People like it. I think people like that transparency of "all right, you're a host, but this other thing exists, and if I want that, it's extra, but you're not pushing it down my throat." Whereas a lot of people would have to upsell something” “The ecosystem, this idea of growing a business or a set of businesses horizontally, not just vertically, was fascinating to us. It took a lot of patience.” “Our goal is to be a place that everyone can come to learn. If they end up buying, all well and good” Connect with Mark: http://rebelbasemedia.io (RebelBaseMedia.io) http://markasquith.com (MarkAsquith.com) http://twitter.com/MrAsquith (Twitter) http://facebook.com/MrAsquith (Facebook) http://instagram.com/MrAsquith (Instagram)
How do you write your episode titles? Serious question. It sounds easy, right? It is, you just choose something descriptive and evocative. But does that guarantee a click? A few weeks ago I authored a https://twitter.com/MrAsquith/status/1389995638406975493 (podcast growth thread on Twitter containing five things that I see podcasters doing wrong every day and quick ways to fix them). Over the next couple of weeks, I'm going deeper into each of these problems to add more context, take a closer look at how to implement the fix and why I suggested each particular approach. Last time, I talked about why https://www.markasquith.com/the-podcast-accelerator/279/ (you shouldn't buy that $97 guru crap), before that https://www.markasquith.com/the-podcast-accelerator/277/ (how to grow your podcast by being more human )and the week before, https://www.markasquith.com/the-podcast-accelerator/275/ (how to produce less and grow your podcast more). Next up, problem/fix #4, to recap is... your episode titles. Episode titles are easy. Good episode titles are very hard. You might have heard about "SEO". It means "search engine optimisation" and here's how https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization (Wikipedia) describes it: Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic to a website or a web page from search engines.[1] SEO targets unpaid traffic (known as "natural" or "organic" results) rather than direct traffic or paid traffic. Unpaid traffic may originate from different kinds of searches, including image search, video search, academic search,[2] news search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, the computer-programmed algorithms that dictate search engine behavior, what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines, and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. SEO is performed because a website will receive more visitors from a search engine when websites rank higher on the search engine results page (SERP). These visitors can then potentially be converted into customers. Here's my paraphrased rewrite of that as it relates to podcasting: Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the quality and quantity of new listeners to a podcast from search engines. As a podcast marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, the computer-programmed algorithms that dictate search engine behavior, what people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines, and which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. SEO is performed because a podcast will receive more potential new listeners from a search engine when shows rank higher on the search engine results page (SERP). These listeners can then potentially be converted into followers and fans. Every podcast app is a search engine. Every. Single. One. In fact, Wikipedia tells us that, too - look: ...and industry-specific vertical search engines. With this in mind, then, we need to think about our episode titles like "SEO" titles. Outside of getting traffic, though, SEO has another goal: to get the click through to the thing we want people to visit - in our case: our episode. Consider a Google search. If I search for "UK Podcast Experts" the Rebel Base Media site is the first organic (non-paid for) result. The goal here is to rank for that search term and you'll see the people above (Trisonic) are paying for that position - we get it for free as we rank best for that search term. But rankings aren't the only result we're looking for. We're looking to entice someone to click on the link, too - after all, there's no point ranking for something only for them to decide not to click. Podcast episodes are the same. It's rare that someone is looking for...
Mark Asquith created Rebel Base Media, a U.K. tech company that helps businesses become as successful with podcasting tools as he has been. Getting his start in web design, Mark says he didn’t know he was an entrepreneur until somebody told him he was. He was just taking care of business that came through the door, not worrying about scale and capacity. He says a lot of would-be entrepreneurs would be better off thinking of themselves as business owners first. “Do the work, tell the people, let people know where you are,” Mark says. “That’s business. When you can prove you’ve done it four times, then you’re an entrepreneur.” ______ Rise Grind Repeat Podcast powered by EIC Agency ______ Hosted by Dustin Trout Produced by Andrei Gardiola __________ Check out the full video episode at: https://bit.ly/3dlwjnJ https://spoti.fi/2Mgfpe6 https://apple.co/2MiQdUv For more information visit our website at https://eic.agency/ We are also on Instagram @EveryImpressionCounts

In an odd twist of irony, I'm about to have a chat with http://twitter.com/mrasquith (Mark Asquith) from https://rebelbasemedia.io/ (Rebel Base Media) entitled “Creating Experiences that Inspire Loyal Communities”. It’s one of the first sessions happening at https://phxstartupweek.com/ (PHX Startup Week), and it's going to be very hard for me not to use https://twitter.com/evoterra/status/1386708441004118017?s=20 (Apple Podcasts botched Apple Podcast Subscription rollout) as a negative example. If you’re still basing your assumptions on podcasting experiences before 2018, your assumptions are terribly antiquated. And not in a good way. When I talk about the experiences of podcast consumers, please understand I'm not just talking about their experiences with the audio they listen to. Yes, that’s highly important to get right, and it’s critical to provide a good in-ear listener experience. But you also have to pay attention to the full podcast consumption experience! Podcasting is going through another inflection point right now, and that means all of us in podcasting—podcasters and service providers—have an awesome responsibility not to cock it up. Again. Though it’s still too damned hard, everything about listening to podcasts is a lot easier than it was at the beginning. Which means that switching costs are super low. At the risk of offending your life coach; it is unlikely that your podcast is irreplaceable, regardless of how hot your take. Seriously. https://podcastindex.org/search?q=business%20leaders (Search on your topic in PodcastIndex.org) and see how many other shows look and feel similar to yours. And probably sound similar too. Undifferentiated, perhaps, in the listeners’ minds. How To Relentless Focus On Podcast Listening Experiences Start with the in-ear listener experience but don’t stop there! The in-app listener experience matters. Their experience with your website is important You’re responsible for the experience of your socially shared content, even if you’re not sharing it socially! Focus on the listener experience of your online community, your emails… and in-person events (when we can again go). Consider collaborating with a podcasting peers to do some reciprocal auditing of one another. ----- A written-to-be-read article and a full transcript of the audio of this episode can be found at https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/updating-your-podcast-listener-experience-assumptions (https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/updating-your-podcast-listener-experience-assumptions) https://twitter.com/evoterra (Follow @EvoTerra on Twitter) for more podcasting insights as they come. https://buymeacoffee.com/evoterra (Buy him a virtual coffee) to show your support at BuyMeACoffee.com/evoterra And if you need a professional in your podcasting corner, please visithttps://podcastlaunch.pro/ ( Simpler.Media) to see how Simpler Media Productions can help you reach your business objectives with podcasting. On the surface, a fan-favourite coming-of-age movie told through the eyes of young, innocent, naïve Baby Houseman as she has the time of her life meeting sexy, "bad boy" dance instructor Johnny Castle on her family holiday to the Catskill Mountains in the summer of 1963. She learns to dance, he learns to love. It's all very romantic. It's a feeling, a heartbeat. But, underneath it's more than that. Class divides, prejudice, discrimination, illegal abortion, sex - all the things that flew over my head when I first saw it aged 11-12. Dirty Dancing took big risks to come to the big screen, and it's those risks that make it an endearing classic, adored by millions, over 30 years later. Joining me in my kinda dancing, is a brilliant partner. Mark Asquith only saw this movie for the first time last year - and loved it! He brings a unique perspective to the chat, and bizarrely, some watermelons.... Massive thanks to Mark for taking the time to guest on this podcast and make sure you check out his work! In this episode, we're getting into the fun details - we're going to design our podcast. This is a really fun step, where your podcast will start coming together properly as you start to piece together all the exciting ideas you've had and form it into something concrete. What do we mean by ‘designing' a podcast? Let's talk through the steps. I'll be joined by my special guest, CEO & co-founder of Rebel Base Media, and owner of podcast hosting platform Captivate.fm, Poductivity, Podcast Websites and of course, Podcast Success Academy. This episode's milestone: Head to pages 5-6 of your https://www.captivate.fm/cribsheet/ (Podcast Accelerator crib sheet)! Get thinking about your listener avatar and XYZ statement as a foundation for designing the rest of your podcast. With these details in mind (and it doesn't have to be perfect the first time, just something to focus on!), it'll be so much easier to plan content, design cover art/choose music, market our podcast and find sponsorship down the line. When you get to ask one of the people on the forefront of podcasting, someone who lives on the edge of defining how we interact with each other via media, a few questions it is best to make sure you record the conversation. Why? Because perspective shifting answers and questions abound. Take a listen as I interview Mark Asquith, aka The British Podcast Guy, as we discuss his journey to define his role in the world, his thoughts on the future of podcasting and why he really does not care about missing out. His answer made me rethink several different areas of my life. And it wouldn't be a conversation with Mark unless some superhero conversation surfaced. I mean the man calls his company Rebel Base Media! I may just have to have him back on the show to just discuss Star Wars, the DC universe and Star Trek. I can easily get lost in that conversation. After quitting his job at age 23 so that he didn't have to work for people with whom he didn't want to share a water cooler any longer, Mark Asquith decided to try his hand at digital product development and began working with some of the UK's biggest organisations, including the NHS, JCB and the Ministry of Defence. But that wasn't enough, he struggled with the idea of having a "boss" and the stifling feeling that brought with it. Mark decided after a few years as a freelance digital consultant that the only way to actually control his own lifestyle was to work truly for himself, on things that he loves. So, in 2008 he set up his first "real" business. Obviously, in 2008 that was a web design business. Since then, Mark has gone on to create a globally successful design agency, work on two tech startups with some serious stories to tell and create a personal brand that has resulted in an audience of worldwide fans who appreciate his "no BS" attitude and straight-talking demeanour. A regular speaker across the world at tech, business and podcast events, particularly in the United States. A straight-talking, no BS millennial speaker, Mark talks on productivity, startups, work/life balance, personal branding, digital product development, user experience and all aspects of modern marketing. Right now, Mark is CEO and co-founder of Rebel Base Media, one of the UK's leading podcast companies and was the vision behind the suite of products from Rebel Base Media including a podcast hosting, analytics & distribution platform (Captivate.fm), the world's #1 managed WordPress platform for podcaster (Podcast Websites), Podcast Success Academy & podcast interaction tech, Poductivity along with the Rebel Base Media podcast production studio in Sheffield.
Mark Asquith, CEO and Founder of Rebel Base Media, joins us to discuss how podcasting has developed over the years, how marketers can use podcasting, and where it's going.
