Salon Rising
The Client Landscape Has Changed And No One Is Talking About It – With Rach From Halo Hair and Beauty

Salon Rising

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 7, 2026 48:22 Transcription Available

You know the feeling. You post the last minute cancellation, the one that used to fill within the hour, and now it just sits there. The Monday DMs that used to be mental are quiet. The new client requests that used to roll in are a trickle. You are not imagining it, and you are not doing anything wrong. In this episode, Sam and Jen are joined by one of Sam's dearest friends and the final piece of her rat pack, Rach from Halo Hair and Beauty in Tweed. Fourteen years a salon owner, six years an educator, and refreshingly honest about what has actually shifted in this industry. Rach and the girls get into the thing most owners are quietly worried about and almost no one is saying out loud. The clients are not coming the way they used to, building a new column is harder than it has been in years, and the old playbook of post on Monday and fill by Friday does not work anymore. This is a real conversation about the new landscape of the Australian salon industry. Why younger clients are skipping colour altogether. Why the hate around pricing online misses what a haircut actually costs to deliver. Why a smaller team has quietly become the smarter, calmer, more profitable choice. And the slow shift that comes with time in the chair, when you stop chasing the bigger salon and start enjoying the one you already built. What we coverWhy building a new client column is so much harder than ten years agoThe new client landscape and why last minute spots no longer fill the way they didYounger clients going natural and skipping colour, and what that does to the booksThe online hate around salon pricing and the real cost behind a haircutWhy a smaller team often means better culture, less tax and more profitKnowing your numbers and team targets so you are not paying people to do nothingWhy going back to basics is the skill apprentices are missingChoosing to enjoy the salon you have built instead of always chasing moreSome weeks the most powerful thing you can do is jump in, do what you need, and jump back out.FAQsWhy is it harder to build a new client column now than it used to be? Demand has shifted, so the steady stream of new clients many salons relied on has slowed right down. More people are going natural or stretching out appointments, which means fewer new bookings and a slower build for newer team members. Is a smaller salon team better than a bigger one? For many owners, yes. A smaller team can mean stronger culture, less time spent managing people, and a lower wage, tax and superannuation load, which often leaves the business more profitable and far less stressful to run.Why do salon prices feel so high right now? A haircut or colour covers far more than the time in the chair. Rent, stock, insurance, superannuation and tax all come out of that price, and rising client expectations mean each service takes more time and skill than it used to.Mentioned in this episode:

Comfort Stops Growth.Megan Boucherball, President & CEO of Green Tweed, walked away from leading a billion-dollar business at DuPont because she realized something…Success can become a trap. Her role was secure. The path was clear. The reputation opened doors. But she knew she had stopped growing. So she left the corporate safety net to help build a startup with one employee, real payroll pressure, and no guarantee it would work. That decision completely changed how she leads. In this conversation, we get into questions every ambitious leader eventually has to face:• How do you know when your career has become too comfortable?• What happens to your leadership when the safety net disappears?• Are you actually growing… or just getting better at protecting what you've already built? She told me: “Until your back is against the wall, you really haven't faced adversity.”I think a lot of leaders spend years trying to avoid discomfort. But discomfort is usually where the real growth starts.Has leading outside of your comfort zone helped you grow?-----Connect with the Host, #1 bestselling author Ben FanningSpeaking and Training inquiresSubscribe to my Youtube channelLinkedInInstagramTwitter

Stephen Tweed has spent 40 years as a business strategist in healthcare at home and founded the Home Care CEO Forum in 2013. He's not retiring - he's rewiring. And his latest deep dive is into how artificial intelligence will transform the home care industry. In this episode, Stephen lays out a framework drawn from Sangeet Paul Chaudhary's book Reshuffle that breaks AI's impact on home care into three distinct levels: individual tasks, organizational systems, and the competitive ecosystem. It's a practical way to think about where your agency is today and where the real opportunities are heading. At the task level, the big wins are in sales and marketing, caregiver recruiting, and scheduling. Stephen shares a striking statistic from a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center symposium - only 34% of physician prescribing decisions are based on actual medical knowledge. The parallel to home care is real: how much of what schedulers and recruiters do is based on solid data versus intuition and habit? AI closes that gap by analyzing information faster than any human can wade through it.At the systems level, Stephen walks through his five phases of flow - attraction, conversion, staffing, caregiving, and collection - and the 12 operational systems that high-performing agencies need to have in place. He explains how AI can continuously improve those systems, using a sales example where analyzing referral data reveals that trusted advisors like bank trust officers, geriatric care managers, and estate attorneys consistently deliver clients with the highest hours per week and longest length of stay. That's the kind of insight that should be driving where your sales reps spend their time. The conversation also covers client-caregiver matching, Stephen's "rule of threes" for caregiver types (full-time professional, halftime professional, and part-time intermittent), and the emerging world of agentic AI - where software doesn't just analyze but takes action, like reaching out to caregivers to fill open shifts.Ken and Stephen also discuss the critical importance of respecting client privacy as AI technology enters the home - a lesson Stephen learned from his own grandmother 25 years ago in an assisted living facility: "Don't shout, I'm not deaf. Respect my privacy. This is my home."Guest Info: Stephen Tweed - Leading Home Care, a Tweed Jeffries company Website: leadinghomecare.com Email: stephen@leadinghomecare.com Newsletter: Stephen Tweed's Thursday Thoughts (subscribe at leadinghomecare.com) LinkedIn: Stephen TweedHome Care Heroes and Day Service Stars is produced and sponsored by Ankota - If you provide services that enable older or disabled people to continue living at home , Ankota can provide you the software to successfully run your agency. The beautifully unhinged "Kraut Cheap Tune" is like stumbling into a broken arcade in some lysergic hinterland where the machines have learned to improvise. A-Tweed strips away the usual constraints here, letting the tracks breathe and mutate across odd terrains, somewhere between krautrock's hypnotic sprawl and chiptune's glitchy nostalgia. The Rome-based producer, known for his elastic approach to tempo and texture, opens up new space on this EP for Sketchy Lines Records.  Toulouse Low Trax delivers two takes on "Junk Foot," each one pulling the original into different orbits, while Kamoun's rework of "Dixan Cheap Tuning" offers another dimension entirely. Fresh dimensions indeed – this is A-Tweed at his most exploratory, and the results are properly compelling. Out February 24th on Sketchy Lines Records.

fWotD Episode 3107: Sieges of Berwick (1355 and 1356) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 6 November 2025, is Sieges of Berwick (1355 and 1356).The sieges of Berwick were the Scottish capture of the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed on 6 November 1355 and their subsequent unsuccessful siege of Berwick Castle, and the English siege and recapture of the town in January 1356. In 1355 the Second War of Scottish Independence had been under way for over 22 years, after a period of quiescence the Scots, encouraged by the French who were fighting the English in the Hundred Years' War, assembled an army on the border. In September a truce was agreed and much of the English army left the border area to join King Edward III's campaign in France. In October the Scots broke the truce, invading Northumbria and devastating much of it. On 6 November a Scottish force led by Thomas, Earl of Angus, and Patrick, Earl of March, captured the town of Berwick in a pre-dawn escalade. They failed to capture the castle, which they besieged. Edward returned from France and gathered a large army at Newcastle. Most of the Scots withdrew, leaving a 130-man garrison in Berwick town. When the English army arrived the Scots negotiated a safe passage and withdrew. Edward went on to devastate a large part of southern and central Scotland. He was only prevented from worse depredations because bad weather prevented his seaborne supplies from arriving. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Thursday, 6 November 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Sieges of Berwick (1355 and 1356) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Brian.

BRITPOD – England at its best. -- WhatsApp: Du kannst Alexander und Claus direkt auf ihre Handys Nachrichten schicken! Welche Ecke Englands sollten die beiden mal besuchen? Henry III of England and Alexander II of Scotland met in York to settle the whole "where does England end, and where does Scotland begin?" question on 25th September, 1237. The consequent ‘Treaty of York' (mostly) settled the map of the borders right up to the present day. Alexander agreed to give up claims on northern English counties like Northumberland, Cumberland, and Westmoreland in return for a small chunk of land and the right to hand over one falcon a year as a symbolic payment. Yes, a falcon. Medieval politics loved a bit of flair. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how future English kings could spin Scotland's resultant ‘fealty' as an admission that England was the natural powerhouse; discover the lawlessness of the borderlands for the centuries afterwards; and reveal just how many times Berwick-upon-Tweed has caused a cartographical headache… Further Reading: • ‘A History of Scotland, Series 1, Hammers of the Scots, The Treaty of York, 1237' (BBC, 2013): https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0198xmq • ‘Magna Carta, Scotland and Scots Law' (University of Edinburgh, 2025): https://www.pure.ed.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/31216033/Magna_Carta_Scotland_and_Scots_Law_LQR_version.pdf • ‘The world's oldest border?' Vampires today? Slick hair, silk capes. Some eve sparkle. Vampires back then? Bloated corpses crawling out of the dirt to ruin your crops and torment you with whispering your sins in the dark. In this week's episode, the Hosts dig deep—literally—into two of Britain's grimiest, creepiest, nastiest vampire legends: the Berwick Revenant and the Melrose Chaplain. These aren't your Victorian nightwalkers with dinner reservations and box seats at the opera! These are medieval undead freakshows with unfinished business. First, we head to Berwick-on-Tweed, where a pious man dies, only to rise again each night—chased through the streets by hellhounds from the fiery below. Then it's off to Melrose Abbey, where a debauched priest refuses to stay in the ground, creeping back from the grave to haunt his former patron - and anyone else who skipped evening prayers. What do these revenants want?... Blood? Maybe... Redemption? Doubtful... Peace? Only if you burn the body and do it fast. Join us as we dive into plague, purgatory, and the part of vampire folklore where the vamps aren't sexy—they're just filthy. Until now, the standard narrative of American religious history has begun with English settlers in Jamestown or Plymouth and remained predominantly Protestant and Atlantic. Driven by his strong sense of the historical and moral shortcomings of the usual story, Thomas A. Tweed offers a very different narrative in this ambitious new history. He begins the story much earlier—11,000 years ago—at a rock shelter in present-day Texas and follows Indigenous Peoples, African Americans, transnational migrants, and people of many faiths as they transform the landscape and confront the big lifeway transitions, from foraging to farming and from factories to fiber optics. Setting aside the familiar narrative themes, Dr. Tweed highlights sustainability, showing how religion both promoted and inhibited individual, communal, and environmental flourishing during three sustainability crises: the medieval Cornfield Crisis, which destabilized Indigenous ceremonial centers; the Colonial Crisis, which began with the displacement of Indigenous Peoples and the enslavement of Africans; and the Industrial Crisis, which brought social inequity and environmental degradation. The unresolved Colonial and Industrial Crises continue to haunt the nation, Dr. Tweed suggests, but he recovers historical sources of hope as he retells the rich story of America's religious past. This was not just any man, but a pillar of the community; a decorated military pilot who had flown Canadian Forces VIP aircraft for dignitaries such as the Queen of England, Prince Philip, the Governor General and Prime Minister of Canada. This is the story of serial killer Russell Williams, the elite pilot of Canada's Air Force One, and the innocent victims he murdered. Unlike other serial killers, Williams seemed very unaffected about his crimes and leading two different lives.Alan R. Shawn and Darren talk about traveler engagement, what that means, and how it has changed over time in the context of the airport experience. They explain how airport WiFi can be used to provide targeted communication that helps the traveler navigate the airport safely and reduce anxiety. Because personal information is always an important topic in a system that collects data, we look at how it is protected in the context of airport WiFi. Consumers are generally willing to share information if they know it is secure and they receive some value in return. At the same time, collecting too much information adds friction, and with too much friction, customers will disconnect. Purple was founded because getting connected was sometimes difficult while traveling. MidAmerica is using Purple's airport WiFi offering to engage travelers and improve their experience at the airport. Aviation News Embry-Riddle study warns of drone risks to aircraft The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University study was conducted for the FAA. Researchers looked at data from 6,037 documented flights with altitude information and found that at least 573 flew to an altitude of between 400 and 500 feet, while 781 flew to 500 feet or above. The ceiling established by the FAA for drone flights is 400 feet. The study utilized sensors placed across the country that collected data from Remote  Identification signals, which the FAA has required registered drones to transmit since 2023. Whether he's channeling Duane Allman or Derek Trucks, playing blues bars or baseball stadiums (he's done the National Anthem for both the A's and the Giants), JULES LEYHE simply does not stop playing guitar, and his love for the instrument is infectious. Armed with an SG, a mutt Strat, and a custom Tweed amp, Leyhe plugs in with me for an inspiring, extended guitar hang in which we dive into everything from Jeff Beck (Leyhe's first major influence) to Bonnie Raitt to Buddy Guy to Leyhe's latest album, titled Your First Rodeo. And get this: Leyhe's favorite slide has booze in it. (He'll explain.) For more Jules Leyhe guitar insights, check out his free Ultimate Slide Guitar Master Class and Just Riffin' interview series, both of which are streamable on his YouTube channel. Big thank you to GUITAR PLAYER and guitarplayer.com for making this episode happen. — JUDE GOLD, host, No Guitar Is Safe
