Brooklyn, New York, Summer 1955. The long, hot days of summer have a magic that can best be appreciated by a child, especially one with access to Coney Island and the hallowed grounds of Ebbets Field. Become that child, and take a journey to a simpler time with Adam on Theme Park Time Machine. Special thanks to Terrence from the EarzUp! Podcast for his contributions to this episode. With Coronavirus infecting the whole world, and all Disney parks shut down indefinitely, many fans are reflecting on other times that the parks have closed unexpectedly. There have been natural disasters and threats to national security, and even a day of mourning for a slain president. 50 years ago, Disneyland shut down for a very different and very weird reason; because of the threat of counter-culture rabble rousers. Adam explores the story behind this very odd little chapter of Disneyland history in this edition of Theme Park Time Machine. To us, the idea of humans travelling into space is kind of just...business as usual. If you’re listening to this, chances are pretty good that men and women have been venturing into space your whole life. In the Mid 1950s, though, this was strictly the realm of science fiction. Uncle Walt used to come into our homes each week and lead families into one of three realms. For this episode of Theme Park Time Machine, the destination is tomorrow, and into the vast reaches of our solar system. What is Disney's real-life connection to outer space? One summer day in the late 1990s, a Houston-based sculptor named David Adickes was returning home from a trip to Canada. Along the way, he drove past the Black Hills of South Dakota, and in the distance, got a glimpse of Mount Rushmore. Four massive presidents' faces struck into a granite cliff is enough to catch anyone’s attention, but Adickes had the very same thought that I was just pondering...why play favorites? For the rest of the drive home, Adickes did some dreaming, envisioning a sprawling park with every president represented. He loved the idea of the larger-than-life presidential busts, but wished that people could get closer to them. Adickes later remarked to the Washington Post “The idea for the big heads just popped into my small head!” On this week's Theme Park Time Machine: Adam dives into the history of Presidents Park, an inspirational (but ill-fated) Virginia outdoor museum with giant busts of every US President! The story of how Wayne Szalinski took over Epcot, and subsequently two other continents, HAS to begin with the story of how Rick Moranis first took over the silver screen...which by most accounts was sort of an accident. Joining us to tell that story, Jeff DePaoli from "Dizney Coast-to-Coast," with an audio-assist by Jesse Thorn from the NPR Podcast "Bullseye." This episode was written by Adam Vargyas, recorded and produced by Kory on Monday, September 24, 2018 exclusively for No Midnight Media.
