When a bunch of vulture capital d-bags ran High Times into bankruptcy, the magazine's illustrious fifty year history appeared to be burnt out. But then, in June, Raw Papers founder Josh Kesselman announced that he'd bought the brand for $3.5 million. In this episode, Josh explains how and why he bought High Times, and his high hopes for a return to glory. Josh also shares his own weedy life journey, an inspiring tale of a young stoner who became obsessed with rolling papers, opened a bootstrapped headshop while still a college student, and eventually created an iconic global weed brand of his own.  PATREON Please support Great Moments in Weed HIstory on Patreon. Sorry as I was gone this last week. I visited Disneyland's 70th anniversary a couple of weeks ago. There is so much to talk about when it comes to this celebration of "The Happiest Place on Earth". But the primary reason I felt drawn to come at this time was the new show at the Opera House on Main Street. I feel there is not one but two stories about the new attraction: Walt Disney: A Magical Life. This is of course the highly sophisticated and highly controversial animatronic show of Walt Disney. And I have much to say about that show experience. And to understand all of this, you have to understand efforts made earlier to help people relate to Walt Disney, to include The Walt Disney Story, One Man's Dream and even Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. It's a deep dive review for sure. But there is a larger conversation about how Disney is reconnecting more people to what they once loved in their youth, experiences that foster ties. It's as if Disney has finally realized that their history, their heritage, and their stories really do matter. And they seem to be doing much more moving forward to building on that theme. This podcast looks at Walt Disney's Magical Life and so much more. _______________________________________________________ More Disney Insights can be found below! Richard Lee's life changed forever in 1990 when he slipped on a catwalk while setting up the lights for an Aerosmith concert, suffering a spinal injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. A Texas native raised by conservative Republican parents, he would subsequently dedicate his life to educating his family, the government, and ultimately the entire country about medical cannabis. Along the way, he transformed an eight-block stretch of Oakland, California into a weed autonomous zone lovingly known as Oaksterdam. It included his two cannabis coffeeshops, a medical cannabis dispensary, his political headquarters, and the 30,000 square foot main campus of Oaksterdam University, the country's first trade school dedicated to training people for careers in the legal cannabis industry. Richard then put up his own money to run a state-wide marijuana legalization initiative in California. Not long after, the Feds came to shut him down, and the city of Oakland rose up in his defense. Richard Lee passed away this week. May he Rest in Plants... PATREON Please support Great Moments in Weed HIstory on Patreon. Walt Disney—A Magical Life opened at Disneyland on July 17, 2025 (the 70th anniversary of Disneyland) in the Main Street Opera House (to be rotated with Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln). With Walt Disney One Man's Dream as the opening sequence, this new attraction features the first-ever Audio-Animatronic figure to depict Walt Disney. On July 15, I had the honor of attending a special media preview of this brand new show with the opportunity to view the show twice plus hear from the Imagineers (Tom Fitzgerald and Jeff Shaver-Moskowitz) and Walt Disney Family Museum representatives (Kristen Komoroske) who worked on this new experience.   In this episode, I'm joined by Jack Kendall from DSNY Newscast to discuss this new attraction, including plenty of honest and detailed analysis about the new Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic and some discussion about the lobby experience (led by Imagineer Kim Irvine) and film sequence.   Thank you to Disneyland for this very special opportunity and for inviting me to attend this media event.   Get bonus content, ad-free episodes, and more at patreon.com/imaginationskyway.   Create your own Disney travel memories with our sponsor KMV Travel.   Subscribe to WDW Magazine and receive 15% off with code SKYWAY when visiting https://www.wdw-magazine.com/shop/?ref=SKYWAY   Tag me and join the conversation below. News: Guests who were at Disneyland on the 4th of July were able to celebrate more than the birthday of the United States. Crowds were way down. This was likely due to most Magic Keys being blocked out and the price for the 1 park/1 day ticket was $200. No festive decorations were installed this year, due to the 70th, and the 4th fireworks show wasn't heavily publicized. However, that meant that guests could walk on to quite a few attractions and enjoy the park with much less of a crowd! – https://www.micechat.com/418376-disneyland-news-crowds-collapse-pixies-ghosts-robo-walt/ As July 17th nears, one of the last pieces has fallen into place. The new marquee at the Main Street Opera House was installed this past week. The new sign now features both Great Moments with Mr Lincoln, and Walt Disney – A Magical Life. The new blue sign replaces the darker red sign that was there before and it looks amazing! – https://www.micechat.com/418376-disneyland-news-crowds-collapse-pixies-ghosts-robo-walt/ Part of the new Opera House experience will be a new exhibit from the Walt Disney Archives and the Walt Disney Family Museum. Several items were painstakingly packed up and driven to the park to be installed from the museum in San Francisco. More than 30 objects were loaned to the resort, many of which have never been on display outside of the Family Museum. The exhibit opens with the new show on July 17th. – https://www.instagram.com/reel/DLqDLPOtkbv/?utm_source=ig_embed Weeklyteers who are interested in visiting Walt's 1930s estate in the Hollywood Hills will have a few opportunities this summer. Known at Walt Disney's Storybook Mansion, Walt and Lillian lived here and raised their daughters in the mansion. It is rarely open to the public, but for $75 per person, you can get a tour of the property on Saturday, July 12, July 26th, or August 2nd. There are multiple tours on each day. These are sure to sell out, so visit the link in our show notes to book your visit today! – https://disney-house-tours-july-12.eventzilla.net/e/2138656162 It seems like overnight the old Port Royal shop was converted to a seating area for guests from a gift shop. Just one more night and it is now back to a gift shop once again! The shop now features mostly Nightmare Before Christmas merchandise, but otherwise looks much like it did before it was changed to seating. – https://www.micechat.com/418376-disneyland-news-crowds-collapse-pixies-ghosts-robo-walt/ On July 7th, the new Celebrate Happy collection launched. This collection features the bright colors of the Disneyland 70th celebration. There is a Loungefly Mini Backpack, Minnie Mouse Ear Headband, and a Zip Up Hoodie. These items can be found in World of Disney, Elias & Co., and the Emporium. – https://disneyparksblog.com/dlr/celebrate-happy-with-disneyland-70th-anniversary-merchandise/ Our 400th episode is coming up and we would love to hear from you! In this episode of Hangin' at the Hangar Bar, we take a look back at one of the smartest, funniest, and most underappreciated live shows Disney has ever done: Great Moments in History (But Only the American Parts)—the Muppet-filled masterpiece that used to liven up Liberty Square with a mix of chaos, charm, and Sam Eagle's booming sense of patriotic duty.We unpack why the show worked so well, speculate wildly about why it disappeared, and debate whether something so clever could survive in today's Disney (or cultural) landscape. Spoiler: we get a little spicy. From cost-cutting to crowd control to the inevitable reality that people love to ruin nice things—we don't hold back.We also pitch some reimagined versions we'd love to see, including Sam Eagle delivering nightly fireworks reviews with the seriousness of a national security briefing.Audio Note: We had a Great Moment in Microphone Failure during this one. While AI did its best to clean it up, it definitely left its fingerprints on the entire episode. It's listenable—just not our cleanest. What does it mean to talk about Pride when it comes to cannabis? First and foremost it means celebrating the central role that the LGBTQ+ community has played in the global struggle for weed liberation. Pride also has a special meaning for all of us weed enthusiasts who've been stigmatized, criminalized or ostracized for our love of this plant.  Prior to this conversation, I'd never met Laganja Estranja—who made a star turn in 2014 while competing on RuPaul's Drag Race—but I feel like we immediately hit it off and got on the same wavelength in the way weed people often do. We continue our celebration of Disneyland's 70th anniversary. We started this series at Disneyland with a look at Tomorrow. We now wind the clock backwards and start at the entrance of the park. Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland is a remarkable place. It is the only land in the only park that had an apartment for Walt Disney where he stayed regularly to "walk in the shoes of his guests." That kind of immersion allowed him to see new possibilities in how to create "The Happiest Place on Earth". I have walked this street for over 60 years and I want to share just how really special it is. It is not only the red carpet to any Disney fan, but we see how these places amaze not just from the guest view, but from a leadership view point. It's a perspective that permits you to see how you can build your own employees and create a great customer experience. Join us as we "Walk Down the Middle of Main Street, U.S.A" to see how Walt Disney personally touched this park, and how its design is a message for organizations big and large. _______________________________________________________ More Disney Insights can be found below! In 1971, John Lennon performed publicly, for the first time in five years, at a rally decrying the injustice of Michigan police targeting a radical political activist for an elaborate undercover sting operation, resulting in a sentence of ten years in prison for passing two joints. The concert brought massive media attention, and John Sinclair soon after walked out of prison a free man, landing John Lennon on Richard Nixon's official enemies list. For the next three years, the President's "plumbers" harassed the former Beatle and his wife Yoko Ono, while the INS threatened him with deportation over an old hashish bust back in England. Meanwhile the FBI tapped his phones and sent agents to tail his every move. Lennon, Ono, and their legal team fought them every step, and along the way created a new legal precedent in immigration law that still stands as today's DREAM act. Read John Lennon vs. The USA (written by Lennon's immigration attorney Leon Wildes) for more info. Long live Nutopia! PATREON Please support Great Moments in Weed HIstory on Patreon. "The Terrorists II" arrives to balance out the Mellow Soldiers of Season six with a bit of history on resistance music and the avant-garde.   It appears to be a natural part of evolution that there are dead spots and valleys in growth, where we just have to WAIT for better ideas while people take urine baths and try out experimental blood-letting procedures. So it's an important task to sweep through culture every now and again to point out that there's some massive amounts of bullshit in our bloodstream that seem to be there voluntarily.  The central concept of this cast needed a name & that term ended up being "NECRO-NESIA"... an idea that means when a culture starts hitting an evolutionary dead end, it tends to turn back & consume "classic" moments of itself... forgetting to move forward at all, while having too much fun enjoying the fruits of its most obvious arrival points. So its a kind of opium addiction to GREAT MOMENTS of capitalism... and the cyclical bastardizing of art into entertainment. Does Sabrina Carpenter bring anything that wasn't already a basic tenet of the Britney Spears product 25 years ago?... 'The Terrorists II' proposes that we are living in an era where we've become unaware that all culture is becoming THROWBACK culture with no conscience of it's self-consumption.  It follows that the 'Ranger' of culture becomes extremely bored of being surrounded by a lackluster celebration of things that have already happened before... and must take to the farther edges of the earth to seek out new & less stale information. This cast is in GREAT appreciation of those types... while trying to point out that just because the rides at the carnival are FUN, it doesn't mean there isn't a world of depth out there that still needs our attention to keep paving an evolutionary path. In 1999, this week's guest starred in one of the most financially successful films of all time, but the circumstances around the making and marketing of Blair Witch Project meant that her incredible accomplishment actually came with a lot of very steep downsides.  A story that's briefly chronicled in her memoir: Growgirl: The Blossoming of an Unlikely Outlaw… by Heather Donahue (now known as Rei Hance). On paper, it certainly sounds like a dream come true. You star in a micro budget movie shot for just $60,000 that becomes a $250 million box office smash. But when her star turn struck gold, Rei was both the face of the franchise and fully hidden from sight. It's a wild story, even by show business standards, but Rei and I talked almost exclusively about weed. Because after she left Hollywood behind, she ended up spending a few years in a place she very lovingly called Nuggettown, a Northern California medical cannabis farm back in the beautiful gray market days of the early 2000s.  Revisiting those days more than twenty years later filled me with a beautiful flush of nostalgia cut with a bit existential longing.
