Top Stories for November 29th Publish Date: November 29th PRE-ROLL: SUGAR HILL ICE SKATING From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, November 29th and Happy Birthday to Vin Scully I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Piedmont Oncology Opens Early Detection Pancreatic Cancer Clinic, First of Its Kind in Georgia You can now use a digital driver’s license to buy beer, cigarettes in Georgia Musical events, attractions to get into the magical spirit of the holiday season All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia Mall of Georgia STORY 1: Piedmont Oncology Opens Early Detection Pancreatic Cancer Clinic, First of Its Kind in Georgia Piedmont Oncology just opened Georgia’s first Early Detection Pancreatic Cancer Clinic, and honestly, it’s a big deal. Pancreatic cancer is brutal—13% five-year survival rate, no screening test, vague symptoms that sneak up on you. But this clinic? It’s here to change that. Dr. Andrew Page, the clinic’s medical director, says early detection is everything. “Education about risk factors is critical,” he explained. The clinic will focus on genetic counseling, research collaborations with NIH and Mayo Clinic, and, hopefully, developing a much-needed screening test. None of this would’ve happened without donors like Purple Pansies. Their support is saving lives. STORY 2: You can now use a digital driver’s license to buy beer, cigarettes in Georgia Big news for Georgians: you can now use a digital driver’s license to buy alcohol, tobacco, and other age-restricted items. Yep, your phone just got even more useful. The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) announced the update Monday, calling it a “major step forward” in modernizing IDs. But here’s the catch: it’s up to individual businesses to accept them. No guarantees. Oh, and don’t try using a screenshot—doesn’t count. Retailers need a special mDL reader to scan the license, and staff still have to verify your age. Progress? Sure. Perfect? Not quite yet. STORY 3: Musical events, attractions to get into the magical spirit of the holiday season It’s that time again—holiday magic is everywhere, and Atlanta’s got no shortage of ways to celebrate. From concerts to tree lightings, here’s what’s happening: Holiday Shows at the FOX Theatre: Lauren Daigle’s Behold Christmas Tour (Dec. 4): Grammy-winning magic. Christmas Together (Dec. 6): Amy Grant, Cece Winans, and Michael W. Smith. A Drummer Boy Christmas (Dec. 8): for King + Country’s festive storytelling. Elf the Musical (Dec. 16–20): Buddy’s heartwarming journey. Nutcracker! Magical Christmas Ballet (Dec. 23–24): Ballet meets acrobatics. Festive Attractions: Stone Mountain’s Flight to the North Pole (Nov. 8–Jan. 4): Help Santa save Christmas. Garden of Lights (Nov. 15–Jan. 11): Stroll through dazzling displays. Georgia Aquarium Holidays (Nov. 14–Jan. 2): Twinkling lights, Santa, and sea life. Don’t miss these great events! We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets - DTL HOLIDAY STORY 4: Student loan change could drain nurse pipeline, Ga. dean warns Nursing is no longer considered a “professional degree” by the U.S. Department of Education, and nurses are, understandably, furious. The change, tied to the “One Big Beautiful Bill”, means nursing students can’t access the $200,000 loan cap reserved for professional programs. Instead, they’re stuck with a $100,000 limit—less than what many need to cover tuition. Linda McCauley, dean of Emory’s Nursing School, didn’t hold back: “In a time when we desperately need more nurses, why make it harder? It feels like they didn’t think this through.” The fallout? Fewer nurses, more debt, and a lot of frustration. STORY 5: Flight delays: Here are your rights when flying over the holidays in 2025 Stuck at the airport? Here’s a tip: if your flight’s delayed more than three hours (domestic) or six hours (international), you’ve got rights. Travel expert Katy Nastro says airlines must offer a refund or rebook you—your choice. But here’s the catch: no double-dipping. You can’t get both. And meal vouchers? Only if the delay’s the airline’s fault, like staffing or mechanical issues. Hotels? Depends on the airline. The Department of Transportation even published a guide for what airlines owe you. Pro tip: screenshots of your license don’t count for ID. Break 3: BUFORD HOLIDAY FESTIVAL STORY 6: Forsyth school board approves use of same alarm system in place at Apalachee High School Forsyth County schools are stepping up safety with a $2.4 million Centegix alarm system, approved by the Board of Education this week. You’ve probably heard of these “panic alarms”—they’re the same system credited with the quick response during the tragic Apalachee High School shooting last year. Teachers and staff wear a button they can press in emergencies, instantly alerting law enforcement without fumbling for a phone. The system also includes color-coded strobe lights for visual alerts, ensuring ADA compliance. The first year’s cost? $420,000, with the rest spread over five years. Safety, it seems, is getting an upgrade. STORY 7: Recall alert: Honda recalls 256K vehicles for loss of power software error Honda’s recalling over 256,000 vehicles—specifically 2023–2025 Accord Hybrids—because of a software glitch that could cause the car to lose power mid-drive. Not ideal, right? The issue? The integrated control module’s CPU might reset itself while you’re cruising along. Dealers will fix it for free, though, so there’s that. Honda says owners will get a heads-up by mail starting Jan. 5, but if you’re the impatient type (or just worried), you can call them at 888-234-2138. Oh, and if you’re curious, the recall number is TN2. Stay safe out there! Title: "In the Twinkling of an Eye" 1 Corinthians 15:51-53 This is perhaps one of the most exciting and yet confusing verse in the new testament. I see this passage as clearly teaching the rapture of the church , yet I do realize that there are many that would disagree with me. But, I think the key to understanding this passage is to see the phrase "we shall not all sleep(die) but we will be changed-that is there will be a group of people-(believers) who will not die but will be changed. In other words, we will not die but we will take on a new body made for heaven because we will be taken straight to heaven , by -passing death itself.

What makes someone betray their country? It's rarely just about money. In this episode, you'll hear from a retired CIA officer who spent 25 years recruiting foreign spies by tapping into something deeper than greed. Jim Lawler shares real stories from his career in human intelligence, where persuasion was built on empathy, trust, and understanding what truly drives people. From failed pitches to high-stakes successes, he explains the psychology behind espionage, how personal stress becomes a powerful leverage point, and why most people who commit treason believe they've been betrayed first. Whether you're curious about spycraft or just want a better grasp of human behavior, this conversation pulls back the curtain on how people can be influenced to cross the line. Show Notes: [00:50] Jim was a CIA operations officer. His job was to recruit foreign spies for the CIA. [01:21] Most of his career was about battling weapons of mass destruction. His specialty was human intelligence and recruiting foreign spies was the backbone of that. [02:32] He's now a speaker and a teacher. He's also written three spy novels. [03:02] MICE Framework: Money, Ideology, Coercion, and Ego. [05:11] Jim shares a story from one of his first recruitment pitches. He also found out that revenge is a driving force for espionage. [11:58] Polygraph tests are stress detectors. [15:16] Divorce is one of the most psychologically tumultuous times in a person's life. When recruiting, Jim would become their best friend because he never once recruited a happy person. [16:07] He would study the crack system like a rock climber. He was a keen listener and very curious. [17:33] Empathy and patience were everything when recruiting spies. [20:21] Jim talks about the metaphysics, which is like a neural link where he would put out what he would envision as an invisible link to the brain of his recruits. [22:11] If something is too good to be true it is. [23:45] As a recruiter, he had to manipulate, exploit, and subvert people to get them to do what he wanted them to do. [27:58] Jim believes in treating people the way he would like to be treated. He was sincere with his actions. [28:35] He believes in using his powers of persuasion for good. [32:43] Over 90% of the people he pitched became assets. [33:48] Jim explains what a cold pitch is and the objective to get the second meeting. [36:58] His novels are thinly based on operations he did. A lot of his stories are based on things that he has done or things that his colleagues have done. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Dwell - Part 4: God in the Man Christmas is a time of awe and wonder for many people. Twinkling lights, festive decorations, and manger scenes with Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. Against the backdrop of reindeer and snowmen, it can cause us to ask the question “what is Jesus doing here?” The answer to that question is found by retracing our steps back to the Garden of Eden—God’s first dwelling place where there was a perfect connection between heaven and earth. The progression from the Garden to the manger is the culmination of God redeeming what was lost.
The holidays are in full swing, and homes are shining bright with fairy lights, glittering tinsel, and stunning Christmas trees. While your decorations might impress your guests, they could be causing your Wi-Fi to drag! Yes, those festive decorations might be slowing down your internet. Why - and how to fix it! Christmas Decorations Slowing Down Your Wi-Fi Fairy lights: Twinkling fairy lights are a must-have for setting the holiday mood, but they can also create electromagnetic interference that disrupts your Wi-Fi signal. This happens because these lights emit frequencies that overlap with those used by your router, particularly if they're blinking or in close proximity to the device. This results in slower speeds and buffering when you're trying to stream your favourite Christmas movie. What to do:Place your router as far away from fairy lights as possible and consider using LED lights with lower interference potential. Tinsel: Tinsel adds sparkle to your tree, but its metallic surface reflects Wi-Fi signals, causing them to bounce away from where they're needed. This can create "dead zones" where your internet connection weakens. What to do Avoid decorating your router with tinsel or other metallic objects. Use non-metallic decor near areas where you need strong Wi-Fi speed. Christmas tree Your Christmas tree, especially when covered in lights and ornaments, can block Wi-Fi signals if it's too close to your router. The tree itself and all the decorations on it can reduce the strength of your connection. What to do:Position your tree and router in separate areas. If your router is centrally located for optimal coverage, ensure the tree isn't directly in its path. 3 Simple Tips to Keep Your Wi-Fi Working Well Move the router Keep your router away from fairy lights, tinsel, and your Christmas tree. Place it in an open, central spot, preferably up high, to get the best coverage. Minimise disruption: Devices like microwaves and baby monitors can also interfere with your Wi-Fi signal. Keep your router away from these to ensure better performance. Extend your signal If your Wi-Fi doesn't reach all areas of your home, try a Wi-Fi extender to ensure a stronger, more reliable connection throughout. This Christmas, you don't have to choose between festive decorations and a reliable connection. By following these tips, you can enjoy the best of both worlds. "In the Twinkling of an Eye" is a story about espionage, family love, and loyalty, focused on a Russian-North Korean conspiracy to develop a devastating biological weapon for assassination, terror and genocide, as written by a senior CIA operations officer whose career was devoted to battling the spread of weapons of mass destruction. This is the second book in the thrilling Guild Series! In 1986, a Ukrainian teenager loses his father and his own left eye to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, but he escapes and becomes a top-notch genetics engineer at Moscow State University. There, he is seduced into joining a well-funded new genetics institute where he hopes to develop a genetic solution (better than CRISPR) to cure his twelve-year old daughter's leukemia that is a result of her damaged genes that she inherited from his radiation exposure. But soon he learns that the Institute is actually a coverup run by the Russian intelligence service and is secretly developing advanced genetic bioweapons with the North Koreans for assassination, terror, and genocide. The Ukrainian scientist feels he must remain at the institute, however, in order to find a cure for his dying daughter.Parallel to this story, a young North Korean girl escapes to South Korea via a North Korean attack tunnel beneath the DMZ. Her father, the North Korean military mining engineer who designed the tunnel, dies during the attempt, and she loses her younger brother with whom she was escaping. She is adopted by a Korean-American US military officer and grows up to be an FBI special agent devoted to battling WMD, who secretly recruits the Ukrainian scientist. In the course of their work, the FBI agent equips the Ukrainian scientist with a new glass eye with microelectronics on the nano scale that enables him to record covertly everything he sees and hears and transmit his intelligence to her daily through one of his daughter's dolls that has advanced artificial intelligence. It is perfect revenge for a character, who has lost his eye as a teenager, is scarred for life and has lost his beloved father due to Soviet incompetence at Chernobyl. The doll is virtually sentient and is a stand-in for the female FBI agent whom she resembles. In so doing, the agent overcomes the biggest obstacles that spies traditionally face: safely communicating frequently with their case officer for operational guidance and psychological reinforcement and transmitting critical information in a timely fashion.Together, the scientist and the FBI agent must prevent Russia and North Korea from using the bioweapons for assassination and mass murder of regime opponents.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. About the Lecture: James Lawler's talk, titled “Soulcatcher,” delves into the complex and often disturbing motivations that drive ordinary people to commit espionage. Drawing from his extensive 25-year career as a senior CIA case officer, during which he earned prestigious honors such as the Donovan Award, the CIA Director's Award, the HUMINT Collector of the Year Award, and the Trailblazer Award, Mr. Lawler provides a vivid, hard-hitting account of the realities of intelligence work. Through real-life examples, he reveals the psychological and emotional triggers that lead individuals to betray their countries, and discusses the crucial role that recruiting these intelligence sources plays in safeguarding the national security of the U.S. and its allies. While maintaining the unclassified nature of his presentation by omitting specific details like the time, place, and nationality of the spies he recruited, Mr. Lawler offers valuable insights into the methods he used to convince these individuals to cooperate. He also touches on his role in the takedown of the A.Q. Khan nuclear weapons network, one of the most significant intelligence operations in modern history. Though he must avoid many of the sensitive aspects of this operation, he speaks in general terms about the challenges and successes of disrupting this dangerous network, which involved Pakistan and Libya. Having delivered this talk twice at Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies to great acclaim, Mr. Lawler believes it would be equally compelling and appropriate for an audience at IWP. About the Speaker: James Lawler is a national security consultant and Senior Partner at MDO Group, where he provides HUMINT training to the Intelligence Community and the commercial sector, with a focus on WMD, counterintelligence, technical, and cyber issues. A noted speaker on insider threats in government and industry, he has appeared on numerous national podcasts. Mr. Lawler served as a CIA operations officer for 25 years, with five overseas assignments from 1982 to 1994, and later as Chief of the Counterproliferation Division's Special Activities Unit. A member of the CIA's Senior Intelligence Service (SIS-3) from 1998 until his retirement in 2005, he specialized in recruiting foreign spies, dedicating much of his career to combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. As Chief of the A.Q. Khan Nuclear Takedown Team, Mr. Lawler led the effort to dismantle the most dangerous nuclear weapons network in history. His leadership earned him the CIA's Trailblazer Award in 2007, and high praise from former DCI George Tenet, who stated, “What you and your team have achieved will rank up there as one of the most spectacular intelligence accomplishments in the history of the CIA.” Former DDCI John McLaughlin called it “the closest thing I've ever seen to a perfect intelligence operation.” Mr. Lawler also received the Director's Award, the U.S. Intelligence Community's HUMINT Collector of the Year Award, and the Donovan Award. Before joining the CIA, he practiced law and served as president of a steel components company in Texas. A graduate of Rice University and the University of Texas School of Law, Mr. Lawler is also an accomplished author, with two CIA-cleared espionage novels, *Living Lies* and *In the Twinkling of an Eye*. He is currently working on his third novel, *The Traitor's Tale*. Mr. Lawler is married with three children and seven grandsons.
Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:6"There must be a thousand fireflies out tonight!" Juan exclaimed. Dad had turned off the yard light. The blinking green and orange light from the insects became easier to see. Juan unscrewed the lid from a clean plastic peanut butter container that his dad had poked with a screwdriver to make air holes. He ran to the center of the yard and stood still. Twinkling fireflies fluttered around him. He scooped the container through the air and covered the open end with the lid. Lifting it eye level, he watched for a minute then saw a small blink of green inside the container. Juan smiled and repeated the process, sometimes chasing after the flying bugs."It's time to come in," Dad called from the door.Juan hurried over to him and held out the container. "I caught four green and three orange." The bugs' lights flickered through the clear plastic. "There is no better light than fireflies," Juan declared.Dad switched on the yard light then opened the door and sat down on the cement step. Juan sat beside him carefully holding his container. "Fireflies are an amazing wonder of nature, but there is a better light than fireflies. Do you know what that is?" Dad asked.Juan thought for a moment. "Jesus?""Right!" Dad said. "Sunlight is nice. So is electricity." Dad pointed up at the outside light fixture. "But Jesus is the true light of the world. Do you know why?""Because He saved us from our sins!" Juan said proudly."Exactly." Dad patted Juan on the back. "Because He saved us by dying for our sins and rising from the dead, we will live in His light now and forever. And we can shine His light to others by showing them His love and telling them about Him." Dad stood. "Let's go inside." Juan unscrewed the container lid. He gently shook the plastic until the fireflies flew out and cut a blinking path in the darkness. Juan joined his dad by the door. "I'm glad God made fireflies. They are the second-best light in the world. I'm happier God sent Jesus to be the best light in the world."–Rose Ross ZedikerHow About You?Are you a light in the darkness? Do you complain or give thanks? Are you mean or kind? Do you argue or make peace? Sin brings darkness to the world, but if you know Jesus, He has freed you from sin and given you His light. When you show others His love through qualities like thankfulness, kindness, and peace, others will see His light shine through you in your words and actions. You can bring light to the world and point others to Jesus!Today's Key Verse:While I [Jesus] am in the world, I am the light of the world. (NIV) (John 9:5)Today's Key Thought:Shine the light of Jesus

Vidcast: https://www.instagram.com/p/C4gQIISLcq2/ A new method for rapidly identifying bacteria, fungi, and other microbes is here thanks to a database that catalogues the molecules characteristically produced by these germs, that is their chemical fingerprints. This tool, named microbeMASST, with MASST standing for mass spectroscopy search tool, has been developed by UC-San Diego pharmacologists. Here's how it works. Biological samples are fed into a mass spectrometer that can identify the individual molecules. The list of these substances is then fed into microbeMASST, and the program spits out the names of those microbes that produce such chemicals. All this in a fraction of the time it might typical take to identify pathologic agents, particularly slow growing ones such as the tuberculosis bacterium. The database now covers in excess of 60,000 microbes and that number will surely grow. In addition to microbe identification, the database can better help us understand the metabolism of these pathogens leading to better therapeutic approaches for their control. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41564-023-01575-9.pdf #microbes #bacteria #microbeMASST #massspectroscopy

Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, is in the south at nightfall. If you keep your eye on it for a few seconds, though, you'll see that Sirius isn't steady. It twinkles fiercely. It gets brighter and fainter, and it changes color rapidly — from red to blue to pure white. The twinkling is beautiful — unless you're an astronomer. Twinkling blurs and distorts the view of stars and other objects. That makes pictures of the universe look fuzzy — not good if you're trying to see the smallest possible details. But astronomers have found a way to overcome the blur — a technique known as adaptive optics. The stars twinkle as their light passes through different layers of the atmosphere. Air masses of different temperature and density “bend” and split the light. So starlight follows a bit of a zig-zaggy path through the air, making its source look blurry. Adaptive optics uses a small, flexible mirror to compensate for the blurring. The system looks at a “guide star” — either a real star, or a fake one created by shining a laser beam high in the sky, causing certain atoms to glow. The mirror flexes to keep the guide star sharp. That keeps the images of the sky in sharp focus as well. Adaptive optics has been around for more than two decades. Today, scientists and engineers are working on “next-generation” versions of the technology — overcoming the beautiful but annoying twinkling of the stars. Script by Damond Benningfield

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” — Berthold Auerbach Music brings us home. In time, within ourselves, and in connection with other people. It gives rise to voice, dance, and healing. As Leonard Bernstein said, it can "name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable.” In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, I want to share some reflections after our special Haven PopUp Kota last weekend. I sat behind my piano and played some songs on Zoom. Tracks that emerged from different times, places, and approaches. I wanted to dive into music as a home beyond language and thought. One of the things about writing, recording, and performing music is the more familiar you become with a song, the further you drift from that point of creation. So it's nice to occasionally return to its heart and reconnect with where it came from. I guess, come home to IT in a sense. I loved having the opportunity to think about my songs in this way. It reminded me how much music is part of the deep processing that comes from sensory sensitivity. It's how I move with and through the noise of life and allow the noise of thoughts and feelings to flow through and beyond. Music Brings Us Home in Time “Music can heal the wounds which medicine cannot touch.” ― Debasish Mridha Music brings the past into the present and anchors this moment in future memory and meaning. It can evoke a bittersweet nostalgia and instantly rekindle the dwindling flame of a fading memory. Music Brings Us Home in Ourselves “Music is an outburst of the soul.” ― Frederick Delius Music helps us process and proceed, giving us a foundation to express ourselves. It allows us to dance and sing. Its rhythms show us how we got here and where to go next. “I've found that no matter what life throws at me, music softens the blow.” ― Bryce W. Anderson When I sit at the piano, I allow the wastewater to flow through the pipes. It's raw and unfiltered. It need not be repeated. Like tears of laughter, sadness, or loss, there is a sense of release once the flow ends. Relief. Renewal. Music Brings Us Home in Community “Musicians want to be the loud voice for so many quiet hearts.” — Billy Joel The personal experience of music is a point of universal connection. Music speaks the language of the heart and puts into sound what we feel but can't articulate. No one has a monopoly on meaning. We are all collaborators as we put music into practice in our lives. Hearing how my music resonates with other people brings me great joy. I've received touching stories from people who have listened to my songs during challenging times like illness, grief and significant life changes. It's beautiful to know that the music I've created has travelled with other people. One person told me they were crossing a bridge, and the lyrics of one of my songs connected at precisely the right time, inspiring the clarity they needed to solve a problem they had been grappling with for months. The Stage is a Forest - The Magical Realm I share this reflection at the end of the episode... Trees are microphones reaching above the fog. Cables are the overground roots and shoots connecting the ecosystems of creative potential. The magnificent curves and contours of instruments. Few straight lines and clinical edges. The light bounces, glistens, and reflects. Twinkling in the trees. Calling to me. Inviting. Wooden casings and the dark mesh on a wall of amplifiers absorb some of the glare. I'm at home here. In stillness, expectancy, possibility…waiting, wondering, anticipating. What will happen? I walk to the drum kit and pick up my sticks. Something comes to life as the wooden baton connects with the centre of the head. I feel it in the depth of my being. It makes my stomach ripple with fearsome wonder. The most terrifying and awesome instrument. What a sound. What a feeling. To externalise the rhythm I feel within.
