Sean and I originally came up with something like a half-dozen subjects for this miniseries, including a few actors from Saturday Night Live who made the jump into films. But ultimately it became kind of unwieldy, so we limited ourselves to two full episodes. Hollywood and show business fame in general can be a brutal place, and careers can end for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes actors just fall out of favor (Uma Thurman or Orlando Bloom, perhaps). Sometimes they say/do something controversial (Will Smith, Wesley Snipes). Sometimes—often the case with child actors—they decide they just want to do something else and leave the industry (Peter Ostrum, Mara Wilson). And some actors leave for more noble reasons. Rick Moranis retired for several years to raise his children after his wife died. Phoebe Cates married Kevin Kline and chose not to return to acting even though the opportunities were still coming. Then there was Grace Kelly. Grace Kelly got involved with an honest-to-god prince, Rainier of Monaco, and simply walked away from the industry. She made eleven films (not counting documentaries), and about a month after finishing her last film, High Society, she married Rainier and that was pretty much that. So in today's episode we'll be looking at two of Kelly's films. We begin with 1954's Rear Window, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and co-starring James Stewart. It's a taut thriller that maybe had the unfortunate side effect of making voyeurism look attractive. In Part 2 of today's episode we'll be talking about To Catch a Thief from 1955.

Anchored by a master class in snark presented by Bill Murray, with Ramis, Aykroyd, and everyman extraordinaire Ernie Hudson rounding out the titular team, the supernaturally amazing cast includes Sigourney “The Most Exhalted Queen of the Universe” Weaver, Annie “the unsung MVP of the Ghostbusters” Potts, and the ever lovable Rick Moranis as the world's most indefatigable accountant. Let's face it folks, there's two epochs in history, before “he slimed me” and after “he slimed me," and the Multiplex Overthruster crew has seen them both. After lampooning westerns, monster movies, and world history, Brooks turned his signature sense of humor to the cinematic sci-fi outings of Star Wars, Alien, 2001, and Planet of the Apes. With an all-star cast including Rick Moranis, John Candy, Joan Rivers, Bill Pullman, and Daphne Zuniga, the film was born from a gentleman's agreement between Brooks and Star Wars creator George Lucas. In return for certain concessions (rule number one: no merchandising) from Brooks, Lucas agreed to handle some of the more technical aspects of the film through his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic. Chosen by Kent and released in 1985, Brewster's Millions was directed by Walter Hill and produced by Lawrence Gordon, Joel Silver and Gene Levy for Universal Pictures. Hill was best known for tougher, more muscular films like The Warriors, The Driver, 48 Hrs. and Streets of Fire, so seeing him take on a broad Richard Pryor comedy is one of those wonderfully odd 80s career turns that makes perfect sense only after three pints and a VHS rental card. The screenplay came from Timothy Harris and Herschel Weingrod, the writing duo behind Trading Places, adapting George Barr McCutcheon's much-filmed 1902 novel for a new generation.The film stars Richard Pryor, John Candy, Lonette McKee, Stephen Collins and Hume Cronyn, with music by Ry Cooder. Made on a reported budget of around $15 million, it earned roughly $45 million worldwide, making it a solid box office performer even if critics were not exactly fainting into their notebooks with admiration. This week on The Video Store Podcast, I am recommending four movies built around one of the simplest and most reliable science fiction ideas there is, shrinking people down. It is a strong trope because every one of these films understands that once a character gets small, nothing has to be exotic to feel dangerous. A bloodstream can look like deep space. A shopping cart can feel absurd and threatening at the same time. A backyard can turn into a full scale survival story. The fun of these movies is not just the effect itself, it is the way each one finds its own tone inside the same basic setup.Fantastic Voyage starts this set in an old-style studio style. Richard Fleischer directed it, Raquel Welch was still early in her career, and the movie ended up winning Academy Awards for art direction and special effects. Isaac Asimov wrote the novelization, which helped give the film an added layer of science fiction prestige even though the movie was not adapted from one of his earlier books. It is still one of those sixties films where the production design does a lot of the selling. You are watching people turn the inside of a human body into a full cinematic world, and they do it with real confidence.The Incredible Shrinking Woman takes the same basic concept and pushes it toward satire. Lily Tomlin is the main reason to see it, and she is surrounded by exactly the kind of bright, slightly unreal suburban world that makes the jokes work. Jane Wagner wrote it, Joel Schumacher directed it, and the movie has a cast that includes Charles Grodin and Ned Beatty. There is also a nice eighties detail in the score, since Suzanne Ciani handled the music, which gives the film one more thing separating it from the older version of this idea. It is not the most famous title in this group, but it feels very specific to its moment, especially in the way it folds consumer culture and household products into the premise.Innerspace may be the easiest recommendation here because it is so good at being funny, fast, and a little chaotic without losing track of the effects work. Joe Dante directed it, Dennis Quaid and Martin Short make a very good mismatch at the center, and the movie won the Academy Award for visual effects. This is one of those late eighties studio movies where the effects are both impressive and funny. It also has that Dante who has a habit of making a mainstream movie feel just a little off center. You can sense the touch of Industrial Light and Magic in the technical side, but it never turns into a dry demonstration reel.Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a joy to watch. Joe Johnston made his live action directing debut with it, Rick Moranis is exactly right for the inventor at the center, and Disney turned a backyard into a full adventure landscape. It was a major hit, and for a while it stood as Disney's highest grossing live action film. Part of what makes it hold up is that so much of it was built around practical effects, oversized sets, models, puppetry, and carefully staged perspective tricks. It also had Tummy Trouble attached in theaters, so for a lot of people there was a Roger Rabbit bonus built into the experience. That is a pretty good rental memory to have.What I like about putting these four recommendations is that they show how flexible a shrinking movie can be. One plays it as a polished sixties science fiction trip. One turns it into satire. One uses it for special effects comedy with a little manic energy. One makes it into a family adventure that a lot of people probably first met on cable or VHS. Same basic hook, very different results. Send us Fan MailSeason 17's Hack 4x4 continues as predictable as the weather in the City of Angels (no relationship to the previously covered film, and host Ken's favorite motion picture remake, see S4,E4 for more on the Nicholas Cage movie with this sobriquet for a title) with this week's third entry in the Mick Jackon canon: L.A. STORY (1991).  Written by and starring Steve Martin at the arguable pinnacle of his comedic film stardom (Father of the Bride would be released the same year), L.A. Story is the flick that immigrated Jackson to the States after Martin had seen Jackson's acclaimed British dramatic television series subsequent to the success of Threads (S17,E1). Jackson, who had no background in nor ever directed a comedy, initially declined the offer, believing the script too good and having too little knowledge of Los Angeles (and likely the SoCal, California, U.S., & North America regions). Yet Martin and his producer believed Jackson's latter objection an asset; he'd have an outsider's perspective on what's been described as a satirical love-letter to the eccentricities of L.A.   The comedy follows Martin in the role of a wacky bachelor weatherman in a zany Los Angeles full of neon and plastic surgery, and this was the extent of the movie that Thomas (who picked the director and his four for the 4x4) knew prior to this, his first watch. Between its mixture of Zucker Brothers' and Mel Brooks's absurdist and sight gag humor with the occasional Groucho Marx-level clever wordplay is a love story between Martin's weatherman (((“meteorologist”))) and Victoria Tennant's first-time visiting L.A. British reporter (((“journalist”))) as Martin shows Tennant's character around L.A., guided by a sentient variable message highway traffic sign (((“WHAT I REALLY WANT TO DO IS DIRECT”))). As this romantic comedy proceeds with Shakespeare references, including an appearance of the sexiest man to ever grace the screen Rick Moranis as a Hamlet-esque gravedigger, but also a rapping waiter, Martin roller-skating through art museums, and a very bouncy Sarah Jessica Parker as SanDeE* (((“Big s, small a, small n, big d, small e, big e, and there's a little star at the end.”))), Martin's and Tennant's characters learn no easy lessons or manifest grand revelations. Rather than have their characters evolve and develop and expiate, the movie has instead adults fairly realistically portrayed with Richard E. Grant as Tennant's ex-husband wanting to rekindle the flame and a casual take on monogamy.   This episode, no Jack, but guest Andi drops in to mix up her Micks, Thomas his Sarahs, and Ryan his quotes from next episode's The Bodyguard. Meanwhile Ken quietly reflects on the last Thanksgiving he spent with his cohosts and Kevin Spacey reenters the chat. Before the end of the ep, Ryan and Andi harmonize on a 90s rap classic on their way to a Mick Jackson theme song. Fans of the pod will learn Andi likes a break in them, Thomas isn't big on this comedy, Ken surprised its comedy's not cringe, and Ryan's people once migrated in the summers to L.A. to rollerblade. That sounds good. [School of Movies 2026] A surprisingly personal and tender show, dealing with some difficult subject matter comes out of this criminally forgotten 1989 Ron Howard family comedy drama. It was a staple of my childhood and looking back, it seems like I took on board a great deal of the life lessons experienced by the amazing ensemble cast of the Buckman Megafamily, which include Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Diane Wiest, Rick Moranis, Harleyy Kozak, Tom Hulce, Martha Plimpton, Jason Robards and stellar performances from both a young Keanu Reeves and Joaquin Phoenix. Whether you're a parent yourself or not, you had someone appointed with the task of looking after you when you were a child, and whether they did a good, bad or mixed bag of a job, chances are you're going to find something in here to relate to. Definitely one to listen to when you can give it time to absorb, and my god, watch this movie!

Nineteen Eighty-Three was a great year for cinema. Scarface. The Big Chill. The Outsiders. Risky Business. The Right Stuff. Videodrome. Return of the Jedi. And to represent the year he was born, Lobster picked… this movie. Based on their breakout characters from the sketch comedy show SCTV, Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis star as Canadian brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie in this take (off, eh?) on Hamlet. Something is rotten in Ontario at the Elsinore Brewery, and it isn't just about live mice in the bottles - there's also the nefarious plans of Max Von Sydow's Brewmeister Smith. Bob and Doug try to get to the bottom of the issue, and to the bottoms of many, many bottles of beer in this cult classic, which The Globe and Mail named as one of the best Canadian comedy films ever made.
