Our latest guest on Soundtracking is, as Edith mentions at the start of our chat, someone we owe a huge debt of gratitude to. For the impossibly likeable Jon Favreau was the very first guest she interviewed for the podcast, literally a decade ago! Back then, Jon discussed his take on The Jungle Book; today, he is with us to talk through the music of The Mandolorian & Grogu, which is scored by friend of the show, Ludwig Goransson
Yes! Chef! Nick and Angela are joined by Jon Favreau for an episode packed with appreciation for great food, and the creativity and passion that goes into making it. Jon arrives in the kitchen in the middle of a gigantic world press tour to promote his new movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, the latest adventure in the Star Wars universe. The film, of which Favreau is director, co-writer and producer, is out in cinemas this week and boasts an all-star cast including Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White. Jon is well versed with the culinary world, most notably with his 2014 film Chef, where he played a cook who starts up his own food truck. In order to prepare for the role, he schooled up on a range of cooking techniques with long-term collaborator, the Korean-American chef Roy Choi. Jon's passion for chef life also extended to him getting his own commercial kitchen fitted and working with Choi on The Chef Show, where he shared meals with celebrity guests including Gwyneth Paltrow and one of our faves, Tom Holland. Add those credentials to his back catalogue of film work, which includes Iron Man, The Jungle Book and Elf, and you have the ingredients for a top quality Dish guest. The episode's meal is a request from Jon: a simple but perfect Cacio e pepe gnocchi with broccoli & walnuts, a creation he admires from the best spot in the kitchen. The wine pairing is a bottle of Broglia Gavi DOCG. Enjoy this one, food lovers, as Jon shares his joy for food with us all. We get to level up the Fast Food Quiz, hear about DJing for Mark Ronson, find a rare Favreau knowledge gap, and âthe clean plate club' is born.  You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and on Spotify. All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish If you want to get in touch with us about anything at all, contact dish@waitrose.co.uk Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions Learn more about your ad choices. A senior Indigenous banker in Canada cautions the Canadian government to keep Indigenous consultation at the forefront for major projects. As Dan Karpenchuk reports, he also says there is interest from Indigenous leaders in taking part in those major energy projects. Recently Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney repeated his plan to fast track major energy projects in Canada. Last week, he said Ottawa would build quickly and âin the right wayâ in consulting with Indigenous and provincial partners, but some of those leaders have been critical fearing that the process of consultation will be rushed and their concerns would be brushed aside. Carney's government wants to change parts of environmental law to make it easier to build a pipeline to the west coast, along with other energy projects. Bill Lomax is the president and CEO of the First Nations Bank of Canada. He says that early and meaningful talks with Indigenous communities is key. âWe're seeing more business acquisitions happening, joint ventures happening with companies that are servicing, let's say, a pipeline. That kind of thing is just really taken off. We've seen our business grow. We're really a reflection of our clients. And their success leads to our success.â Lomax says the bank's commercial business was growing by 10% a year, but in the past year, it's been 26%. He says that shows how much Indigenous businesses are becoming involved, but he warns the opportunity for their approval is there if the consultation is done right. âYou need to engage with the nation early on and let them know what you are thinking about, have them participate and have them be part of the plan.â Lomax says even though some Indigenous communities will be against some projects, but he believes there are many more that would be ready to move and move quickly. The First Nations Bank of Canada is an Indigenous-owned national bank. It's mission is to serve Indigenous people, nations, and businesses. The Alaska Native Language Center will publish a novel this summer retelling Rudyard Kipling's âThe White Sealâ, the only Jungle Book story set outside India, on St. Paul Island in the Bering Sea. Two artists from the Pribilof Islands retell the story through the perspective of a young Indigenous protagonist named Sergie. KUCB's Maggie Nelson has more. Garrett Pletnikoff is the coauthor of the new young adult chapter book âSergie and the White Sealâ. The story is an adaptation of one in Kipling's Jungle Book, âThe White Sealâ, published in 1894. And actually names Pletnikoff's great, great, great grandfather as a main antagonist. Kipling portrays Pletnikoff's ancestors through a disparaging colonial lens â as unclean murderers of the innocent marine mammals. Pletnikoff says this adaptation is a chance to tell a different story â to portray the Unangan community and the seals as partners instead of enemies, as Kipling wrote them. âThe White Seal includes violent descriptions of seal harvesting, but Kipling never mentions that these harvests were not done by Unangan free will. The Unangan people of the Pribilof Islands were subjected to forced labor.â Hannah Zimmerman coauthored the book with Pletnikoff. She says they were inspired by Unangan lore and mythology and decided to name their main character after a spiritual leader from the Aleutian chain â Sergie Soboroff. âItâs a story of Sergie, who discovers that heâs a shaman, and he has this, you know, magical ability to talk to animals, and he discovers his purpose as a conduit between the animal world, in the human world.â Zimmerman says they used Sergie's role as a shaman to discuss topics like how colonization wiped out certain Indigenous practices. âWhen we read the book to fourth and fifth graders in the fall at the St Paul Island School. And Iâll never forget how, at the end of the book, one of the fifth grade students came up to me, and he was like, you know, I didnât know Aleuts could be superheroes.â âSergie and the White Sealâ is now available through the University Press of Colorado's website. White Briefs, Retro Ads & Australian Underwear Culture with Thomas This week on the Brief Talk Podcast, UNB Tim sits down with Thomas from Melbourne, Australia for a fun and unexpectedly nostalgic conversation about white briefs, retro underwear ads, Australian underwear culture, and discovering your style through movies, media, and vintage aesthetics. What starts as a chat about classic white briefs quickly turns into a deep dive into growing up influenced by American media, collecting vintage underwear advertisements, and why traditional white briefs still hold a special place for gear lovers today.  Thomas shares how movies like 13 Going on 30, The Little Rascals, and even The Jungle Book helped shape his fascination with white briefs growing up in Australia, where they've never been quite as mainstream as they were in the United States. The two compare the differences between American and Australian underwear culture, from department store shopping to the struggle of finding classic full-cut briefs in today's boxer brief dominated world.  The conversation also covers Thomas's journey through brands like Calvin Klein, Jockey, Stafford, Fruit of the Loom, Hanes, and Australian labels including Holeproof, Bonds, and Max. There's plenty of talk about retro styling, why Stafford briefs have become legendary among white brief fans, and how vintage-inspired underwear still resonates today.  One of the highlights of the episode is hearing about Thomas's collection of framed vintage underwear advertisements decorating his home â including classic Fruit of the Loom ads, PlayStation campaigns featuring guys in white briefs, and 1950s family-themed underwear artwork. Tim and Thomas bond over their shared love of retro underwear advertising and preserving pieces of underwear history that many people overlook as art.  The two also dive into Speedos, short shorts, retro masculinity, gay nostalgia, underwear representation in books and media, and why gear lovers deserve better representation in romance stories. Tim even teases his upcoming gay romance novel centered around underwear culture, vintage-inspired briefs, and gear-loving characters who actually understand that sometimes the underwear should stay on.  If you love white briefs, retro underwear ads, classic menswear aesthetics, Speedos, or hearing two gear enthusiasts nerd out over vintage underwear culture, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Quotes for Social Media Thomas: âAmerican media just kept finding its way to me over the years.â  Thomas: âStafford is still number one for me.â  UNB Tim: âYou're a true underwear lover if you know the underwear stays on.â  Thomas: âSome of them are legit pieces of art.â  UNB Tim: âWe need an archive of all this stuff so we can have it later.â  Support UNB If you enjoy the Brief Talk Podcast and everything we do at Underwear News Briefs, please consider supporting us on Patreon. In this episode of Case Studies, Casey sits down with Brigham Taylor, longtime Disney film executive and producer behind iconic films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Tron Legacy, and The Jungle Book, for a thoughtful conversation on building a career without a clear roadmap.Brigham shares how an uncertain start at BYU, paired with a deep love for film, led him to pursue opportunities others might overlook. Through early scrappy work, curiosity, and a willingness to stay close to the action, he found himself inside Disney, learning the business from the ground up and eventually helping shape some of the most successful films of a generation.Casey and Brigham explore the role of timing, trust, and relationships in career growth, and why being prepared matters more than having a perfect plan. They also reflect on the mindset required to navigate high-stakes creative environments and evolve beyond a single chapter of success. This episode is a powerful lesson in embracing the unknown and building something meaningful over time. Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! In this week's episode we get down on our fours and howl wildly into the microphone about Marcos Rodriguez Pantajo, the little Spanish boy who was raised by wolves. Using first-hand accounts as our sources, we follow Marcos on his unlikely and spectacular journey of three separate lives; first where he was abused as a toddler by his wicked step-mother before being sold into goat-herding slavery, his life of twelve years sleeping and eating with wolves and when, eventually, the Spanish authorities dragged him kicking and screaming back to society before handing him a rifle and pushing him into mandatory military service. Join us as we settle in and get cozy for this story as told and researched by Heka Astra who, in the second half, explores Marcos's re-integration with society and what the entire story says about human psychology and the human soul (from a Khemetic perspective of course.) Peter's opening the next holiday gift this season, unwrapping a lovely little 90s adventure film given to him by Frank. Join the two boys as they discuss Stephen Sommers' 1994 live action (and we mean live action) The Jungle Book. That's right. It's Christmas in India! The film is based on the Mowgli stories from The Jungle Book (1894) and The Second Jungle Book (1895) by Rudyard Kipling, but mostly focuses on the plotline of the second book.[5] Unlike the books and Walt Disney's 1967 animated adaptation, the animal characters in this film do not talk (a fact we apparently have mixed opinions about).
This time we watched the 1973 British horror film Psychomania, a cult biker horror oddity originally filmed as The Living Dead before the title changed. In the United States it appeared as The Death Wheelers. Not to be confused with the 1963 American film Psychomania, also known as Violent Midnight. The film was produced by Benmar Productions, better known for Spaghetti Westerns shot in Spain. They also made Horror Express later the same year with the same writers, which we covered back in episode 7. Psychomania was created in association with Scotia Bar Distributors who had director Don Sharp under long term contract.Don Sharp was born in Tasmania and began as an actor before becoming a director in the mid 1950s. He turned out low and medium budget films including the Tommy Steele musical It's All Happening, then Hammer Films hired him and he made several well received thrillers. He also worked as second unit director on Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. Quiz time for Jon. Sharp directed BigChrisLee six times. Name them. Beryl Reid plays psychic medium Mrs Latham. She left school at 16 and debuted in 1936 as a music hall performer at the Floral Hall in Bridlington. She became famous on BBC radio in Educating Archie as Monica and as the Brummie Marlene. She later worked for the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. She made the very first challenge on Just A Minute in the 1967 pilot. In the late 1970s and early 1980s she played Connie Sachs in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People, earning two British Academy Television Award nominations and winning for Smiley's People. Doctor Who fans will know her as Captain Briggs in Earthshock. The same year as Psychomania she appeared in Dr Phibes Rises Again. Ross will always remember her as Grandma in the Adrian Mole TV adaptation. Nicky Henson plays lead biker Tom Latham. A familiar face across British television, he excelled at playing cultivated gents, snobs and playboys. His many guest roles included several appearances in The Bill, A Touch of Frost, Pie in the Sky, Fawlty Towers and Witchfinder General as Trooper Swallow. His first wife was Una Stubbs, with whom he later appeared in EastEnders. Despite living with cancer for twenty years he continued acting on screen until 2018. Robert Hardy plays Chief Inspector Hesseltine. We discussed him fully in episode 41a when we covered The Stalls of Barchester from the BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas series. Academy Award winner George Sanders plays Shadwell. Born in Russia to an English horticulturist mother and a rope maker father, he became a British subject when the family fled during the revolution. His smooth voice and upper class accent made him perfect for polished villains. His roles included Jack Favell in Rebecca, Scott Folliott in Foreign Correspondent, the Saran of Gaza in Samson and Delilah and Addison DeWitt in All About Eve which won him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He voiced Shere Khan in Disney's The Jungle Book and played Simon Templar in several films in The Saint series. British horror fans may know him from the Doomwatch movie as The Admiral. There are brief appearances by June Brown as Mrs Pettibone, John Levene from Doctor Who and Bill Pertwee as a publican. Levene worked with Jon Pertwee who was Bill's second cousin. The soundtrack by John Cameron was released in 2003 by Trunk Records. Cameron said they needed something spooky and different with a rock feeling, all pre synthesizer. They recorded at Shepperton's studios which had not been updated since before the war. He described hooligan musicians scratching inside pianos while the engineer sat there in suit and tie, completely anachronistic.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Fresh off the long Thanksgiving weekend, Jim and Lauren crawl out from under their leftover Pilgrim sandwiches to talk about Zootopia 2 absolutely owning the holiday box office, how that might shape Disney's sequel strategy, and the must-have merch that is already slithering into the parks. They also dig into McDonald's massive 70th anniversary Happy Meal promotion, Disney's official holiday book guide, and a couple of doorstop tomes that are now living in the Hersey household. In the back half, Jim takes Lauren on a whirlwind tour through nearly 80 years of Disney's talking-animal history - from Song of the South all the way to Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. NEWS ⢠Zootopia 2's Thanksgiving opening pulls in a projected 156 million dollars domestically and around 400 million dollars overseas in just five days - more than half a billion total and one of the biggest Thanksgiving hauls ever. ⢠How those numbers stack up against Wicked for Good and last year's Moana 2, plus why Universal probably is not panicking while it waits for the inevitable Wicked sing-along edition and a newly announced Galinda prequel novel. ⢠The debut of Gary the Snake - a gloriously weird Zootopia 2 sipper at Disneyland - and Jim's crusade to track down Nog the snow seal pup plush that was gifted to Disney Television Animation staffers. ⢠McDonald's 70th celebration Happy Meal, featuring 70 different Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and classic character toys with two figures per box - plus online grumbling over who made the cut (hello, Clarabelle) and who suspiciously did not (sorry, Cinderella). ⢠Disney Parks Blog's holiday book guide, from deep-dive art and history titles like the X Atencio tribute and John Landau's memoir to Moana's âWhat if she stole the heart?â Twisted Tale, kid-friendly atlases, scratch-n-sniff adventures, and the giant Holiday Magic at the Disney Parks and Bring the Magic Home books currently threatening Lauren's fingernails. FEATURE ⢠A crash course in Disney's history with anthropomorphized animals - starting with the animated sequences in 1946's Song of the South and why so many artists remembered that era as their happiest time at the studio after returning from World War II. ⢠The rise and fall of the abandoned Chanticleer project, the âRoy's Boysâ money feud with Walt, and how that detour accidentally sent Mark Davis to Imagineering where he helped create icons like Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion. ⢠How The Aristocats, Robin Hood, and even The Jungle Book paved the way for modern animal worlds - including the infamous animation recycling in Robin Hood's âPhony King of Englandâ sequence that sharp-eyed fans still spot today. ⢠The long development path from the shelved spy thriller Savage Seas, starring Jack Savage, to the fully realized animal metropolis of Zootopia - including John Lasseter's notes, Jared Bush's CIA family background, and the last-minute decision to swap Nick Wilde out for Judy Hopps as the true lead. What inspired Kipling to write his two most famous works: The Jungle Book and Kim? Why did Kipling hate London and swiftly move to the US? How did Kipling develop such astute observational writing about Anglo-Indians in his early twenties? The Mousedebaters talk Disney Scores On this from-the-vault episode of Mousedebaters, we put our Disney ears to the test with a showdown of famous-but-weirdly-hard-to-place film scores. You know these cues. You've heard them a thousand times. You can hum the melody perfectly⌠but is it actually from Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty? Is that soaring adventure theme Peter Pan⌠or Rescuers Down Under? And why does this haunting oboe sound like it could be from The Jungle Book or Aladdin? Kami, Brittany, and Luke compete to see who can correctly match these classic Disney tracks to the right films â and who's just guessing with confidence and vibes. If your brain stores Disney music like one big folder labeled âChildhood,â this episode will feel uncomfortably familiar. As always we're PG-13 Disney nonsense, for grown up ears only!

Hey gang, we are back with another classic: 1967's The Jungle Book! Note: We confuse the Rudyard Kipling story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, about a mongoose, with a very different story Tikki Tikki Tembo, which is a bit of a racist story about Chinese names. Rudyard Kipling's classic story collection The Jungle Book doesn't have a jazz orangutan named Louie, but it does have the bare necessities of imperialist fiction. The stories about Mowgli and other trailblazing animals all contain a whiff of "But what about the rigid hierarchy of nature?" And when every animal is personified...well...those simple bare necessities begin to reveal themselves. Our theme music was composed by Nick Lerangis.Follow @overduepod on Instagram and BlueskyAdvertise on OverdueSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
1967's The Jungle Book was Disney's attempt to adapt the series of Rudyard Kipling's books into a children's animated film. Initial attempts to create a screenplay were nixed by Walt Disney for being too bleak and violent. The final version of the script by Larry Clemmons, Ralph Wright, Ken Anderson, and Vance Gerry was chock a block with songs, talking animal characters, and toned down threats. The film became the second highest grossing Disney movie at the time and spawned several sequels and live action remakes. Dan and Vicky discuss their very first animated film on Hot Date along with lots of recently seen films like The Roses, Nobody 1 and 2, Splitsville, Caught Stealing, and series Alien: Earth and Dexter: Resurrection. Today on The Literary Life podcast, we begin a new series of episodes on The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling with our hosts Angelina Stanford, Cindy Rollins, and Thomas Banks! After sharing their commonplace quotes, each of them talks about their own reading histories with Rudyard Kipling's work. Thomas gives us some biographical information about Kipling and sets up the literary period in which he wrote. They then begin talking about the structure and form of this book as it is set up as a series of short stories as beast fables. Angelina shares some of the mythic and fairy tale elements she noticed while reading this first story, âMowgli's Brothers.â They also discuss some of the challenges we face reading stories written in a different time and place without imposing our current views on all the literature of the period.
