Original Date: August 14, 2017In many ways, this week’s show is a sequel to last week’s episode #534, with the promised celebration of Jeanne Moreau’s life and career, an email from a listener about Tom Jones’ “The Young New Mexican Puppeteer” and more from the British Film Institute List of “the 50 films you should see by the age of 14”.Unlike most sequels, however, this show is even more irreverent, insightful and informative than last week’s!The festivities commence with a clip of Dean on Australian television telling a (bestiality?) joke, and then after a special opening (a tribute to Glen Campbell), Dean comes out guns blazing, ranting about the internet speeds of his adopted land. After Phil calms him down, they discuss the news of David Letterman’s new show, they urge people to save the Salem Cinema (a jewel of the Pacific Northwest), they talk about an interview they did with the late Jim Marrs and they continue their discussion about the “death of discernment”, this time focusing on an appalling memo crafted by a then member of the National Security Council.From there, it’s onto “Celebrity Deaths”, where, in addition to the Femme Fatale of the French New Wave and Glen Campbell, your friends in podcasting remember a Tony-winning star of Broadway’s “The Music Man”, the star of an early television western series turned right-wing anti-government activist, and the man inside the Godzilla costume.Finally, Dean and Phil discuss a 1982 Australian western, a 1954 western that influenced the likes of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah, the original King Kong, and the Will Rogers comedy Life Begins at 40.

Barrett is joined by Phil and Micah in the stude to shoot the shit about some stories from the weekend. The group chats about Austin, changes on South Congress, and SXSW before segueing in to a conversation about what types of fits they'd get off at various festivals. After Phil and Barrett break down their wishlists, they wrap things up with a final anecdote.

After breakfast and recuperation the party gets into high gear instigating their plan to escape Barovia without Strahd or his minions noticing. Collen heads to the mercantile and swindles a carriage and two draft donkeys while Saban prepares everyone's disguises. They then head to the local inn and get two rooms casting invisibility spells on everyone else to keep there existence at the inn hidden. In the two rooms are: Phil, Josen, and Ismark and: Collen, Saban, and Irena. Phil gets some wine, which he begrudgingly shares with Ismark while Ismark chats with Josen. Irena tells her story to Collen and Saban of how Strahd first began 'courting' her. Saban and Collen seem to really connect to Irena, and Saban theorizes as to why Strahd chose to 'court' her in the way he did. The next morning the party takes off for Valaki along the way they pass a dilapidated windmill where they see an old woman carry a moving sack in from a food cart. After Phil overhears the word 'hag' its on.

In Episode 97, we welcome one of the most successful syndicate leads in angel investing, Phil Nadel (he also happens to be Meb’s favorite syndicate lead on Angel List). After Phil runs us through his background, Meb asks about Phil’s group, Forefront Venture Partners and its connection to Angel List. Phil gives us the run-through, noting how when Angel List announced its syndicate feature, he felt it was a great way for smaller angels to get involved, so he signed up. Today, he’s one of the largest/most active leads on Angel List. Meb asks how the syndicate process works. Phil tells us that accredited investors can register and sign up with syndicate leads like Forefront. This enables them to see the deal-flow of the lead, and invest on same terms. There’s no management fee, instead, investors pay a 20% carry on the backend if there’s a profit. You can invest small amounts – sometimes as little as $1K, yet you get all the same due diligence and legal review as a big investor. Meb notes how syndicates have removed so much of the hassle and made the entire process simpler – which is both good and bad. Next, Meb asks about Phil’s syndicate and the average investor. Phil tells us the average investment in a company is roughly $300K. And they’ve invested in about 44 deals since inception. The average investment per person is around $4-5K. This dovetails into a conversation about how to approach angel investments. Phil tells us a “portfolio” approach is important. He’s against picking only a few companies, as most will go out of business. He tells us “if you try to pick winners, and you only invest in a handful of companies, odds are you’re going to lose your money.” Phil recommends picking companies diversified by industry and stage. The conversation then drifts into timing. Do you invest all at once, or drip in over time? Phil gives us his thoughts. Then it’s Phil’s rule of thumb about success rates. He tells us that out of 100 investments, 70 will go out of business. About 20-30 will stagnate, or exit as a single to a triple. Maybe one or two will turn out to be home runs. Meb asks how Phil finds his deals. Turns out, lots of referrals. The guys then dive into what Phil looks for in a company – it includes post-revenues and capital efficiency. But he’s industry and geography-agnostic. His sweet spot is a valuation in the $5-12M range. Next up, the guys discuss KPIs, or “Key Performance Indicators.” Phil discusses burn and runway, then customer acquisition cost and lifetime value. Phil wants to see that the company knows how to acquire and monetize customers in an efficient and scalable way. He then also looks at margins. Now that the current series of Doctor Who has finished, Phil and Paul return to the Audio Go celebration of 50 years of Doctor Who with a look at the April release of Babblesphere, the 4th Doctors outing in the Desting of The Doctor range. After Phil being disappointed with the 3rd Doctors story, this time round it's Paul's turn to show disappointment in this thinly veiled satire on social media. However, Phil does manage to get in his impression of Lady Bracknell, so a little bit of culture is injected into proceedings. Ok, that's stretching things, I'll admit!! And in the news this week, more viewing figure stats, Doctor Who wins an award, Phil spits in the face of the Daily Mail and a small piece of DVD news concerning the Ice Warriors. All together now, "A HANDBAG?!?".  

After Phil’s trip to the International Christian Retail Show, the gang discusses the current state of Christian retail. Moving on to current events, they touch on the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado and NCAA punishments for Penn State. Lastly, the crew responds to listeners' questions about dreams and calling!
