America, to borrow a word from last week's guest Yoni Appelbaum, is “stuck”. And so the American Dream, for most stuck Americans, is dead. Our guest today, the social entrepreneur Nicholas Lalla, agrees with Appelbaum. The American Dream might still be alive in privileged coastal communities, Lalla argues in his new book Reinventing the Heartland, but it needs resurrection elsewhere. Defining the American Dream as doing better than one's parents and having financial security, Lalla highlights Tulsa, Oklahoma as a model for mid-sized cities seeking economic revival through tech-focused development. Rather than emulating Silicon Valley, he advocates for cities finding their own "tech niche" based on local strengths. Tulsa's success comes from strategic investments, Lalla explains, the "Tulsa Remote" program offering $10,000 incentives to relocate, and comprehensive community development initiatives. Here are the 5 Keen on America takeaways from our conversation with Lalla:* The American Dream is geographically divided - Lalla believes the American Dream is thriving mainly in coastal tech hubs but fading in heartland communities, creating economic anxiety and social division.* Cities need to find their "tech niche" - Rather than trying to replicate Silicon Valley, mid-sized cities should identify and invest in specific tech sectors that build on their existing strengths and legacy industries.* Tulsa's model is working - Through strategic investments and initiatives like Tulsa Remote ($10,000 relocation incentives), Tulsa has successfully attracted tech talent and is on track to create 20,000 tech jobs over the next decade.* Local investment trumps waiting for government aid - Tulsa's transformation began with local philanthropic funding (particularly from the George Kaiser Family Foundation) before attracting corporate and federal investment.* Mid-sized cities offer competitive advantages - Despite lacking some big-city amenities, places like Tulsa provide benefits including lower cost of living, homeownership opportunities, outdoor activities, and the chance to participate in meaningful community development.NICHOLAS LALLA is an urbanist and social entrepreneur, working at the intersection of economic development and emerging technology. He is the author of Reinventing the Heartland, forthcoming from HarperCollins in March 2025. Lalla founded Tulsa Innovation Labs, an organization deploying over $200 million to build northeast Oklahoma's innovation economy. He previously led Cyber NYC for the New York City Economic Development Corporation, a cybersecurity initiative The New York Times called “among the nation's most ambitious…” Earlier in his career, at the Urban Land Institute, he launched a national resilience program for cities combatting the effects of climate change. Lalla has written for Newsweek, Fast Company, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and Next City, among other outlets. “If love knocks on your door, follow it. Don't go back to sleep”. A seeker shares with Vasant Swaha how taking part in the retreat has changed her life and asks him how she can realize her true Self. He answers by first quoting the words of Hafiz, Rumi and Khalil Gibran and then explains that what we're looking for is already here but can only be revealed to us in a climate of emptiness, love and gratitude - and for that an inner cleansing is needed. Swaha shares the example of a 14th century Kashmiri woman named Lalla who was a mystic. She was a wild and free spirit and also highly respected. She was known for helping those who were lost in the forest of the mind to find their way back to their heart.Vasant Swaha is a modern mystic sharing his love, joy, and wisdom in retreats. This is an excerpt from a Satsang on the 30th of January 2024 during the Sacred Silence retreat in Dharma Mountain, Norway. For more information visit www.vasantswaha.net

Lalla Lee Campsen speaks on the core faithful acts a Christian should remember in trusting obeying and praying.
Everyone is back to the grind, and so are our kids, who are in most instances bogged down by conforming to educational environments that do not meet their diverse needs. As my first guest of I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY for 2023, I'm delighted to talk to Dr. Latasha Casterlow-Lalla, an Educator, Author, Motivational Speaker, and Agent of Change who is on a mission to provide equitable programming to students reflecting modern, popular and traditional musical genres as well as embedding cultural relevancy into teaching curriculums. She's an advocate for culturally responsible pedagogy that leverages students' culture and lived experiences to help them learn in the classroom. Dr. Casterlow-Lalla says that we have to stop seeing students as empty vessels because they come to school with a lot to offer: culture, lived experiences, different perspectives, abilities, histories and a plethora of talents that often go untapped and underdeveloped. “We need to see ourselves as collaborative, a ‘sopa', where we take a little bit of this and a little bit of that and then combine those things. And when we get it brewed right, we can create something, a really good soup – a good ‘sancocho' – that fills the belly and warms the soul. That's kind of what my gig is,” she shared. A proud product of the Passaic Public Schools (NJ), Dr. Casterlow-Lalla has been in Education for two decades, supporting students in different roles: as a teacher, leading student organizations, in programs for gifted children, and assuming administrative responsibilities. With a Bachelor of Arts in Music, a Master of Arts in Counseling, Human Development, and Guidance, and having recently defended her doctoral dissertation entitled “Advisement Challenges and Opportunities in Pre-Service Teacher Education: Insights into the Experiences of Diverse Pre-Service Teachers”, let's just say she's an expert in how to engage kids today so they are active participants in creating meaningful and effective learning experiences. Dr. Casterlow-Lalla is committed to ensuring the Arts are acknowledged as core academic subjects and to sharing diverse career opportunities with the 15,000 students she serves. She stated: “In just a few years, most of our learners will be students of color, and to continue to encourage them to move on and to continue to have a very robust and innovative nation, we have some serious dissonance that we need to fix, and we need to continue to advocate. It's important to understand culture to figure out how we can infuse it in school for our students to be successful.”

She writes, she sings, she poses, she acts.

Alex has unwisely watched it all in one sitting, while Andy relied on a gatefold LP and Lou & Lalla acting out the entire story in a specially constructed pergola in his back garden while swigging back elderflower presse in straw hats. Several fascinating matters are also discussed in relation to early Who. While Alex suggests that John Lucarotti might actually have nicked Marco Polo due to his preference for radio, Andy recounts what may be the most important Doctor Who memo of all time, written by the director of episode 4 (The Wall of Lies) John Crockett. Andy also reminisces about the time he was almost found in contempt of court and Alex obsesses about horses and distances again. Yes it's exactly what you might expect from an episode of World Enough and Time, only a bit longer than usual - some might say bumper - and a bit more gilt-edged. See the finish! Enjoy! We love you. What does it take to reinvent a community, revive a local economy, and reinvigorate a workforce? In this five-part Work in Progress podcast series – Destination Tulsa: Tech Hub in the Heartland – we look at how Tulsa, Oklahoma, is embracing in-demand tech industries to do just that. At the heart of the effort is a strong foundation of education, entrepreneurship, health care tech, energy tech, and cybersecurity. Known as the "Oil Capital of the World" for much of the last century, Tulsa, Oklahoma, is on a mission to redefine itself as a tech hub in the heartland of America. And it is well on its way. First a little history. Tulsa became a boom town in 1905 with the discovery of a vast underground pool of oil, attracting entrepreneurs by the tens of thousands to capitalize on the energy opportunities. In later decades, after the initial well was exhausted, the city reinvented itself as a supplier of pumps, drilling rigs, and oil storage. It also created a thriving aerospace manufacturing industry. Now, the economic focus is moving to tech. Over the past five years, tech employment in the city of 400,000 has grown 25%, adding more than 12,000 jobs to the economy. A coalition of public and private partners – led by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, academics, business leaders, and innovators are working together on a plan to have Tulsa join the likes of Silicon Valley, Austin, and Seattle as a nationally-recognized center for technology innovation and a leader in several tech fields. The foundation is in place and expanding, built on a world-class education system, an entrepreneurial spirit, and established inroads into some of the most in-demand industries in today's economy. Destination Tulsa: Tech Hub in the Heartland In part one of our special five-part series, we talk to some of the key players in the tech hub movement to learn more about what it takes to make Tulsa the next economic growth hot spot. Nicholas Lalla, Tulsa Innovation Labs co-founder & managing director (Photo: TIL) Nicholas Lalla is the co-founder and managing director on the Tulsa Innovation Labs (TIL), the architect of the economic and workforce development plan that is designed to attract and keep tech business and talent in the city. "We started with a scan of Tulsa's economy, looked at all the biggest industries in town – certainly oil and gas, aerospace, manufacturing, looked at the local and regional universities and the talent and patents that they were producing, looked at emerging tech trends, and figured out what's going to be the high growth opportunities in five, 10, 15 years," explains Lalla. "We spoke to 120 local community leaders to understand what the aspirations were of the city and get insight from local Tulsans about the jobs and employers and conditions in town and basically scanned the universe for opportunities that we thought Tulsa could win in," he adds. That research showed that Tulsa already had the building blocks in place and – with a focused effort – the city could be a tech leader in five key areas identified by TIL – virtual health care, energy tech, advanced aerial mobility (drones), data analytics, and cybersecurity. The overall effort is getting support at the state level. Elizabeth Hutt Pollard, Oklahoma Secretary of Science and Innovation (Photo: State of Oklahoma) Elizabeth Hutt Pollard is Oklahoma's Secretary of Science and Innovation. She's fairly new to the state, coming from Silicon Valley where she helped grow a number of businesses. One of her first acts as a member of the Oklahoma cabinet was to help usher in the new Science and Innovation Strategic Plan, the goal of which is to tap into the existing talent and economic infrastructure and help it grow. "There it begins to define how we can better work across the state government and all of our state resources and assets, whether that's our foundations, our tech hubs,
