“The Man In The Black Hat”: A gambler down on his luck gets the surprise of his life when a stranger with cold gray eyes hands him the keys to a brand-new car — no strings attached, no explanation given. From that moment on, nothing but good fortune follows him. But so does the man in the black hat. No matter where he goes, no matter what happens, that same gray-eyed figure keeps turning up — watching, waiting. Who is he? What does he want? And why can't anything seem to stop him? | #RetroRadio #WeirdDarkness | EP0625CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Show Open00:01:30.028 = CBS Radio Mystery Theater, “The Thousand and First Door” (July 29, 1977)00:47:20.330 = Screen Guild Theater, “The Maltese Falcon” (September 20, 1943)01:15:59.326 = The Sealed Book, “Death Laughs Last” (September 02, 1945)01:45:34.035 = The Shadow, “The Shadow Challenged” (January 19, 1941) ***WD02:14:35.283 = Sleep No More, “Over The Hill” and “The Man In The Black Hat” (December 05, 1956) ***WD02:37:55.162 = BBC Radio 4 Spine Chillers, “Falling To Pieces” (April 2006)02:50:12.599 = Stay Tuned For Terror, “The Bogey Man Will Get You” (October 01, 1945) ***WD03:04:45.016 = Strange Wills, “Black Interlude” (June 22, 1946)03:34:37.800 = Strange, “The Ghost Train” (September 18, 1955)03:48:16.621 = Suspense, “Locked Room” (January 27, 1944)04:17:35.994 = Tales Of The Frightened, “Call At Midnight” (1957)04:22:22.192 = Tales of Tomorrow, “The Other Now” (January 22, 1953)04:52:16.501 = Show Close(ADU) = Air Date Unknown(LQ) = Low Quality***WD = Remastered, edited, or cleaned up by Weird Darkness to make the episode more listenable. Strap in, plug in, and scratch that eternal itch—because this week on Rush Rash, Chaz and Schatz welcome a certified rock brainiac into the Haggis Shack: music journalist and author Daniel Bukszpan. And folks…this guy didn't just fall down the Rush rabbit hole—he built a library down there. We dive headfirst into his new book Rush & 2112: 50 Years, the 50-year legacy of 2112, the album that basically looked the music industry dead in the eye and said, “Yeah…we're gonna make a 20-minute sci-fi epic instead.” Bold move, indeed.Daniel breaks down:HIs gateway song and songs of choice through years of fandom, and why he chose to write about RushWhy 2112 wasn't just an album—it was a defiant middle finger wrapped in prog geniusHow Rush's refusal to phone it in made them one of the most respected bands in rock historyAnd why no matter how hard anyone tries…no one sounds like Rush but RushThere's talk of guitar solos that are actually everyone soloing, Caress of Steel redemption arcs, and a reminder that sometimes the best career move is doing exactly the opposite of what you're told.Plus—yes—there's haggis, chaos, and at least one unexpected guest appearance at about 21:12 that cosmicly derails things...coincidence?THIS WEEK'S SONGThe wheel gives us the last song off 2112, Something For Nothing. Yes, it was a random spin, the video exists! We do not plan the wheel spins.Bottom line: If you've ever wondered how 2112 went from “this might get us dropped” to “this changed everything,” this episode scratches that itch…then makes it worse.Hot damn, Eh.SCHATZ'S SCRATCH LIST - RUSH TRIBUTE BANDSScratch your itch to hear RUSH music played live by going to check out any of these great RUSH Tribute Bands - these bands are keeping the community and the music alive - the most current, curated, and rockin' list of RUSH Tribute Bands in the world! On the 13th edition of the monthly sidecast from The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, we relive a special night in the life of Gerry Schramm. As the co-host of the Something For Nothing Rush Fancast, Gerry is devotee of Rush for 4 decades. But Gerry didn't hear them on the radio and explore their catalog or have a friend share their record collection with him to find Rush. Instead, one one night in New Jersey in 1986, Gerry and his high school friend and future co-host Steve had an extra ticket and needed a ride to a concert at The Meadowlands that night. And Gerry was up for anything. So together they embarked on the first of more than 25 Rush shows for Gerry - the one that would hook him immediately that night and deeply for life. Hear from teenage Gerry how the set built from hit to hidden gem and the level of musicianship blew him away. Learn what it's like to behold a solo from The Professor Neil Peart himself and marvel at the fact that no one is leaving during the drum solo. It was the Power Windows Tour and one of the best setlists The Wolf has ever seen, himself a four decade Rush fan who never had the chance to catch the Power Windows Tour. The Wolf and Action Jackson reminisce about camping out for tickets to their first Rush show and all the memories that friends make with live rock n roll! Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
In 2015, Joshua Coombes, a British hairstylist, took his scissors to the street to cut the hair of the homeless community in a story that is as much about hope and humanity as it is about hair. He's now the architect of the international Do Something for Nothing movement, which our regular contributing photography mentor Valérie Jardin has photographed at work in Paris and New York. Today, both Josh and Valérie share their experiences of a project that is as philanthropic as it is photographic. Also today, the mailbag is back with letters about the scale of Mother Nature, a walk along the Norwegian coastline and what does it actually look like when you stand within an electricity pylon and look up. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to MPB.com who sponsor this show and the Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. Once, while wandering the bustling streets of London, I found myself sharing a heartwarming conversation with a homeless man. This chance encounter was the spark that ignited a global movement of kindness, transforming lives one haircut at a time; a movement that came to be known as "Do Something For Nothing". Join me as I sit down with the man behind this movement, Joshua Coombes, to explore how his journey began and how it has grown into a wave of kindness that continues to inspire change worldwide. Navigating the world of social media, I learned about the power of intention and the importance of staying true to my original motivations. I've seen firsthand how a simple act of being present can create ripples of positivity that touch lives in unexpected ways. Joshua and I discuss our experiences with this, focusing on the value of shared values and compassion in creating meaningful connections. We also delve into the discussions from the heart, taking precedence over political discourse or division, enabling us to connect authentically with those in our daily lives. Venturing into the fascinating world of plant medicines, we discuss their sacredness, their potential for healing, and the importance of honoring their indigenous roots. We caution against the exploitation of such powerful medicines, while acknowledging the transformative experiences they can unlock. This episode is a testament to the power of human connection, compassion, and the belief that each one of us holds within us the potential to enact change, no matter how small. Join Joshua and me in our quest to spread kindness and invoke change in our world. We all like feeling we got a bargain: BOGO, clothes on sale, or negotiating a great deal on a car. However, sometimes the point isn't how little we are willing to pay, but how much.
It was such an honor to welcome Joshua Coombes to this special episode of the Danay Garcia podcast. Joshua, an author, speaker and founder of #DoSomethingforNothing, was a professional hair stylist when he started cutting hair on the streets for people experiencing homelessness and hard times in 2015. Those simple acts of kindness and connection grew into a movement, and today Joshua is inspiring people across the globe. Join us as we explore what happens when you set out to do something for nothing, but the returns turn out to be life changing. This is one of my favorite episodes personally so far. I really love doing this podcast, guys! To be able to sit down with Joshua Coombes was just so cool. He's someone who I admire very much and also who Ive tried to emulate in some ways. In this episode he shares about how the awareness of someone else and the simplicity of hearing about their life and giving them a haircut brought something out in him that was dormant before. We talk of the importance of having that awareness of one another and just how we can be there for one another. We are not meant to be alone or on our own. We are one another. We're made of the same stuff. I could've kept it going for much longer. His book is called Do Something For Nothing and I highly recommend it. You can find him on Instagram @joshuacoombes to follow more of his life's work. He's such a cool guy and I really hope this episode gives you something to think about in your own life. Why are you here and what do you have to offer? We all have a great purpose in each other's lives and the more comfortable I've become with who I am, the closer I have come to realizing and acting on my purpose. Hope you enjoy!Unexpectedly Yours,NeeleyA special thank you to Joseph Haggard for the music.Find me on Instagram @neeleyreed

Something For Nothing - The Art of Giving - I recently taught a class for the military as part of our AgileDad Giving back workshop series and the results were nothing short of AMAZING!! It was so great to be surrounded with students who appreciated every breath that I shared and were prepared to so all they could to take the teaching and apply them both in their personal and professional lives. This begs the question, what can you do to give back? How can you impact the lives of others?
It started with one haircut."One evening in the spring of 2015, I was on my way to a friend's house after work. I didn't make it. I walked past a man who was homeless at the time. I would often stop to speak with him ... but this time was different ... I remembered that I had my tools in my backpack and asked if he'd like his hair cut. In the hour that followed, he told me his story. The next time we met, he introduced me to some of his friends. Before long I was heading out whenever I could, giving haircuts throughout the streets of London." That's an excerpt from the book "Do Something For Nothing" by Joshua Coombes. In this episode of Watching America, Coombes talks about the impact a haircut and a conversation can make. Explore how you can make a difference with whatever skills you have at dosomethingfornothing.org
