Here we are, almost 20 years later, and I'm finally realizing what it takes to homestead and how we're doing it...but I've never really talked about "why" I've chosen this path in life. Why do I want to homestead?Over the past two days, we've discussed homesteading. We've covered the very basics of "what" and "how" - but we've yet to discuss what is perhaps the most important question:Why? In the same vein as the other shows, let's see what a quick internet search brings up: "why homestead?"Initially, the draw for homesteading for me was a simple life. The seed was planted in Western North Carolina, through the Slow Food movement. The simple life seen through food, farmers markets, and old time music was very desirable. Towards the end of my time there began the advent of social media...and my own "keeping up with the joneses" Seed planted in NCGrew away from it during corporate yearsTransitioned from "liberal" to "conservative"Introduced to prepping in CA via "earthquake kit"Began listening to Alex Jones ~2010Heard of Jack Spirko via Alex Jones ~2011Began listening to Jack SpirkoBegan assembling CA exit strategy in 2012Capitalized on Project Coordinator opportunity in 2013 to expedite move home2014 began work at Davis Tree FarmAssembling exit strategy now? - another topic for another dayEnd of the day......why I'm homesteadingSimple life......concerns about SHTF~ Connect on social media! To download this lecture on your mobile device, click “Listen in podcast app.”This lecture reflects on the ways we represent reality and how it expresses what it means to be human in one hand, and how, on the other hand, that can go wrong, leading us to reduce reality, losing the meanings given to humanity by the Creator. Josué explores questions such as: What is a representation? How different dimensions of reality can be represented? Are there things that cannot be represented? And finally, in the background of this reflection he analyses the current growing rating culture and its implication for how we live our lives. For more lectures, visit the L'Abri Ideas Library at labriideaslibrary.org. In today's episode titled "How to Homestead" I'm going to share my experience thus far with doing so, pulling from a few different blog posts after a quick search for "how to homestead." You can follow along by going down your own wormholes by searching for "how to homestead" in your own internet search browser of choice - while listening in today! In yesterday's show, we asked ourselves "What is a Homestead?" After talking about that, Rob drilled it down to three core concepts that lead to the idea of self-sufficiency: Relationships / Family Land Cultivation If anything - a homestead becomes a mindset. Which leads to the next question: How do you do it? That's what today's episode is all about! Rob is realizing that a focus on the homestead and other aspects of life brings him joy and peace when he has trouble finding that in other aspects of his life...and references the 2022 Goal Setting Workbook by Dan Miller - a great tool for finding balance in life. This episode is almost a culmination of 15 years of thought after the idea of "homesteading" first entered his mind as a viable lifestyle option. Rob provides a bit of history regarding the land where he currently lives...the very same land that he encouraged his family to sell. He's come full circle and now lives on the land he once resented and now looks to his family and the land as one of the few remaining things in life that brings him joy and peace in life. As the dialogue continues - Rob realizes that many of the challenges in life come from a lack of forward thinking...and how forward thinking is a *requirement* when it comes to the growth and development of a homestead. Surround yourself with forward thinking people. He also ties the discussion back into the Baby Steps of Financial Peace University - and firmly believes that freedom from debt and effective management of personal finances is the foundation to building not only the life...but the *homestead* of our dreams as well. ~ Subscribe to the All Around Growth Podcast Telegram Channel for show updates ONLY: https://t.me/allaroundgrowthpodcast ~Follow this link to ALL EPISODES ~ How To Leave a Rating & Review in Apple Podcast AppThis really *does* affect the algorithm......as of recording in February 2022 - I would invite you to do this! The podcast game is changing - help us with a rating and review!~Have a Question or any feedback for Rob?Send me an email at allaroundgrowth@gmail.com~Discussion Links:How to Start a Homestead: 9 Must-Read Tips for New Homesteaders Homesteading For Beginners | Your Homestead Quick Start Guide 7 Ways to Start a Homestead (Without Being Overwhelmed)2022 Goal Setting Workbook Feeling discouraged? Today I'm pleased to have back on the program Ron Sellers, the president of Grey Matter Research and Consulting. Ron Sellers and I discuss a new study his organization has done in conjunction with Infinity Concepts. That study was published a week ago, and it's called “The Generation Gap: Evangelical Giving Preferences.” Before we jump into that interview, I just want to note that we will have a way for you to get a copy of this nearly 40-page report in the show notes. https://greymatterresearch.com/articles-studies/ Before we go: A few quick notes. First, regular listeners to the podcast know that this is not the first time Ron Sellers has been on the program. If you are a ministry leader, and you're new to the program, you might want to give a listen to some of his previous appearances on the program. His research provides insights into evangelical giving patterns that are helpful. Just go to the MinistryWatch website and type Ron Sellers into the search engine. Also, a quick reminder that we have a webinar coming up next week. It will feature Michael MacKenzie and his new book “Don't Blow Up Your Ministry.” We'll discuss some of the issues that take pastors and ministry leaders down – and how to avoid them. I think this book and webinar are essentials for ministry leaders and pastors, but also for lay people who are grieved by the high-profile implosions of ministry leaders. That webinar is February 16 at 3 pm ET. It's free, but you do have to sign up. Look for a sign-up link in my daily emails, or you can find it in the show notes of this episode: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dont-blow-up-your-ministry-a-conversation-with-michael-mackenzie-tickets-260567673927 I also want to remind you that we take no money from the ministries we cover. There's no advertising on our website. We are completely listener and reader funded. If you'd like to make a donation to MinistryWatch, just go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the donate tab at the top of the page. For a gift during the month of February, we'll send you a “thank you” gift of Michael MacKenzie's book. So a gift to us this month helps us a lot, and you'll add an important new book to your library. If money is a little tight now…hey, I get it. Been there a time or two myself. You can still help the program. Just rate us on your podcast app. The more ratings we get, the higher we rank with search engines, and that means other people can find us more easily. Rating us just takes a second, and it doesn't cost you a dime. It's a free and easy – and important – way you can support the MinistryWatch podcast. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Ben Warwick. We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, and Casey Sudduth. I'm Warren Smith, and – until next time – May God bless you.
Today - we dig into building the homestead of our dreams. Over the past few weeks and months...there's been a lot of talk about building the life of our dreams with talk of goals in the seven different aspects of life: Financial, Physical, Personal Development, Family, Spiritual, Social, and Career. Those are wonderful - but how do they integrate into the homestead? So today, we are going to dive into the topic of "What is a Homestead?" We will review a few dictionary definitions and an introductory homesteading blog post before we dive into the key takeaways from all of it today, which are:Relationships / FamilyLandCultivationSelf-Sufficiency~ Connect on social media! Today we're finishing our discussion with James Lindsay about history, Marxism, and theology. As James explains exactly what Marxism is and what its historical roots are, it becomes increasingly clear that this ideology is entirely antithetical to that of the Christian's. Apparently, the Marxists want redemption for mankind as well, but they believe that can only happen when literally everyone on Earth has complied with their worldview. We also discuss some Christian theology as well, and why it is has been such a good foundation for Western Civilization to thrive on. And although James isn't a Christian, he talks about why he still thinks Judeo-Christian values are the best for society. --- Today's Sponsors: Birch Gold are the best people to trust to help you diversify your 401(k) & IRAs into gold. Today is another day of discussion inspired by the book "365 Tao", by Deng Ming-Dao. We often live a life that is out of balance with nature. Nature is God, the Spirit, Tao, the Infinite Creator, however you choose to define it. Tune in today as we dive deep into the spiritual and talk about a life of balance. In today's show, I incorrectly quoted myself as "Tao is God, but God is not Tao."However, I beg to differ with myself and would argue: "God is Tao, but Tao is not God." "One of the ideas that I have come to embrace is this idea that...it's not necessarily about doing what I want to do and setting the goals that I want to set, but it's trying to live a life that allows me to understand what God wants, what it is the Spirit wants, what it is the Tao wants..." When teachers get through the rough patch of the work, what can we do to help them work through the different phases of burnout? You can dip into burnout one day, and come back out. And it's important, to be honest with yourselves about where you are in burnout, and how to get out of it. Join the podcast now and find out more detailed methods to support our teachers! https://alwaysalesson.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Bonus-Episode.png ()Quotable Students are coming to their classrooms with different needs, and that really isn't being acknowledged. As leaders, a part of that responsibility is kind of being a good model, being compassionate, being open to be receptive to the needs of your teachers. There are things that we can change to bring excitement into our day. And sometimes that is enough to distract the brain from the ho hum. It's true you're gonna find burnout in any profession, what you need to do is recognize these things in yourself and in your environment. I might still be in burnout, but I'm making progress towards being burned in which is what Amber says, then that is motivating to make you keep coming to work and keep trying and keep trying to figure it out. Sow longevity has been an issue the industry has tried to improve over the last several decades with not a lot of success. With the high turnover rate of sows, we need a steady influx of replacement gilts to maintain production goals. Today, Dr. Benny Mote talks with Dr. Greiner about different methods of identifying the best replacement gilts, and new technologies that can help us get the most out of the replacement gilts we have available. "We need to raise these gilts like they are all going to be replacement females because they're going to be the engine of our profitability." - Dr. Benny Mote
Despite being in the midst of winter on a 7 degree morning, Rob shares how the seasonal change is upon us...and also forgets to discuss the seasonal change as he got too busy waxing philosophical on the day's reading from the devotional titled 365 Tao. Rob spends a good part of the episode talking about finding balance in life - which is not surprising after reading: "Those who follow Tao understand that a diverse personality is problematic only if some aspects dominate to the exclusion of others. This is unbalanced." Tune in to hear more about finding equilibrium in life, maintaining a strong mind, and the consistency that is needed to prevent deviation from the course we want to remain on.
