The UW–Madison Sustainability Writing Awards are intended to inspire conversations about how writing can bring together people with different experiences to reflect and act within the context of the global climate crisis. Thanks to the generosity of donors, in the fall of 2022 the Office of Sustainability offered three $200 scholarships to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who submitted essays on the topic of resilience. The topic drew a range of writing about resilience from ecological, personal, political, educational, and technological perspectives. In this episode of the SustainUW Podcast, host Kylie Schedler speaks with the three winners of the 2022 competition: Andrew McDonnell, who wrote of how our resilience—in the smallest, most unexpected ways—makes us “agents of history"; Ben Yang, who considered the idea of legacies through the story of his Hmong grandmother; and Allyson Mills, who identified resilience in mallards she watches endure a storm at a pier on Lake Mendota.

We're joined on the pod by Dutch writer Thomas Heerma van Voss, who is talking about his new chapbook, Thank You For Being With Us. We're also very pleased to have editor, writer and lecturer Andrew McDonnell asking the questions. They discuss the translation of Thomas' work, how lockdown has affected his writing in 2020 and how he crafted his short stories. The Reflective Journey is a practitioner’s handbook to the low arousal approach, written by Studio 3 CEO Professor Andrew McDonnell. Professor Andrew McDonnell’s new practitioner guide really is a reflective journey. A strong theme throughout all of the chapters is that we must look at our own behaviour first in order to manage highly stressful situations. I januari i år hade Lågaffektiva podden den stora äran att få intervjua professor Andrew McDonnell efter hans föreläsning på den lågaffektiva konferensen i Stockholm. Andrew är förgrundsgestalten för lågaffektivt bemötande i och med det arbete han påbörjade på 1980-talet i England med utgångspunkt i hantering av utmanande beteenden och som vi idag finner i den fysiska delen av lågaffektivt bemötande och som heter Studio 3. Joe is home from school. "How was your day Joe?" asks his mum Emma (the producer of the programme). But Joe, and many like him on the autistic spectrum, can't always find the words to summarise their day, or even make sense of the question. Yet later on, they may come round to offering an answer. So what is happening as they struggle to process what is being asked of them? Through sound and interview, Joe and Emma explore where he and others on the autistic spectrum go to in their minds between the question and a possible answer. Emma finds out that part of Joe's resistance to giving an answer may come from the fact that he's exhausted just from the effort of processing the transition between school and home. Whereas so-called "neurotypical" people find it easy to make sense of the different settings and can see them in a wider context, people with autism often focus on every tiny detail and find it difficult to filter information. So a short walk up the path to the house may be crammed with observations of every blade of grass, or a struggle to understand why some things have changed since they left- the window being open for instance when it wasn't before. And the question itself - "How was your day?" Which part of the day? Does Mummy mean "today" or yesterday? Is it the right question to be asking at all? Emma and Joe hear testimony from others on the autistic spectrum, including the writers Wendy Lawson, Michael Barton and the poet Nicole Nicholson. There are also contributions from Professor Simon Baron-Cohen (Director of the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University), clinical psychologist Andrew McDonnell, speech therapist Robert Bell and Delia Barton, Michael's mother.
