My guest today is bassist, Todd Smallie. After his family moved to Atlanta at the age of 14, Todd got very involved with the local scene and attended the Atlanta Institute of Music, where he got to learn from the likes of Jimmy Herring. Connections with Herring, Tinsley Ellis, Col. Bruce Hampton, and others led him to an audition with The Derek Trucks Band in his early 20s. He toured and recorded with Derek up until 2010 when Derek teamed up with Susan Tedeschi to start Tedeschi Trucks Band. Todd didn't sit stagnant for too long, as he started playing with JJ Grey & Mofro just a few months later, and has spent the last 11 years as a member of that group. (NOTE: The band, Greyhounds, made up of former Mofro members Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube were my guests on the very first episode of this podcast). When he's not touring, Todd can be found playing at bars, clubs, and festivals with an assortment of acts all over Colorado. In our conversation, we chat about getting back on the road for the first time since COVID, his upbringing and history as a player, and all of the new projects he's involved in locally. Part 2 of 2 - We take you inside the investigation, the witness betrayal and the bloody aftermath of the killing of two young police officers on Walsh Street in South Yarra in 1988. It was a war fought in Melbourne streets that left three suspects dead, two patrol officers murdered and led a respected investigator to take his own life. John Noonan, the joint head of the Ty-Eyre taskforce, recounts the brutal slaying as well as the investigation and prosecution. The taskforce charged Victor Peirce, Trevor Pettingill, Peter David McEvoy and Anthony Farrell with the Walsh Street murders. With Victor's wife, Wendy Peirce was to be the star witness. She stayed in police protection for 18 months - at a cost of $2 million - but eventually refused to give evidence at the Supreme Court. Peter "Bubble-Brain" McEvoy wasn’t so much a black sheep but a dark stain on his family. His brothers were prison officers. He was a rapist, armed robber and alleged police killer. He has always maintained his innocence, but his brother Geoff tells a different story. Thanks for listening. Please take the time to rate & review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. To start the podcast, I share a few brief thoughts on the Black Lives Matter movement and also share a passage from previous podcast guest, Anthony Farrell of Austin-based band, The Greyhounds. This episode was originally supposed to air on June 4, but we decided to push it back one airing date to June 11 to join with our brothers and sisters in the music industry in support of Black Out Tuesday. #theshowmustbestopped My conversation this week was with Portland recording artist, Isabeau Waia'u Walker. Walker grew up in Hawaii and as a young adult made her way to Portland to pursue a career as a high school teacher and eventually a musician. In our interview, Isabeau talks about her teaching career, what drove her to play music full time, touring as a member of Y La Bamba, and growing up in a mixed-race family. Just a few weeks ago she put out her debut EP, Better Metric, which is absolutely wonderful and can be found anywhere you buy or stream music. At the end of the episode, we get to hear the EP's title track. Austin based blues/rock/soul duo, The Greyhounds have been at it since 1999 when Anthony Farrell answered an ad in LA Weekly that Andrew Trube put out looking for a keyboard player. Since that time, the then LA now Austin based musical duo has released several of their own albums, have written songs that have been performed by the likes of Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, and have served as members of JJ Grey & Mofro. In this inaugural episode of Middle Class Rock Star, Farrell and Trube talk about their history together and share some of their experiences from 20 years on the road.
Antony Farrell, of Lilliput Press, which this year celebrates its 35th anniversary, discusses his career in publishing, the history of the press and the “genius” authors with whom he has worked over the years, including Hubert Butler – “he was a secular saint to me” – Tim Robinson, John Moriarty and Desmond Hogan. He talks about his background – his father was “a Castle Catholic”, his mother an Ulster Protestant and he was educated at Harrow public school, where he boxed (“I was more athlete than aesthete”) and was called “a bog rat”, inspiring him to embrace his roots, studying Irish history at Trinity College Dublin. We also touch on Brexit and Boris Johnson, including James Shapiro's witty advice to the British prime minister on how to approach his book on Shakespeare. Farrell also discusses the pros and cons of being published by an Irish publisher rather than a British one, the importance of alliances and building long-term relationships with authors, the different challenges of publishing fiction and nonfiction, and the people he has worked with over the years, many of whom have gone on to establish high-profile careers in publishing, the arts and as authors. Describing it as “a kind of finishing school”, he speaks of the 300 or so interns he has employed over the years, including Aideen Howard, Brendan Barrington, Sarah Davis-Goff and Lisa Coen, Tom Morris, Elske Rahill and Nicole Flattery. He offers a sneak preview of major titles coming up: including – a podcast exclusive! – Stephen Rea's memoir, A Life in Parts; A Letter marked Personal, a posthumous novel by JP Donleavy; and The Last Footman by Gillies Macbain, an Anglo-Irish memoir for which he has high hopes.

This week we feature a live performance by the Greyhounds, Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube. BSC contributor Barbara Ching returns to continue her series on the connections between country music and the blues.
This week on BSC we feature Greyhounds. Andrew Trube and Anthony Farrell have been collaborators in some form or fashion for over 15 years - as session musicians and songwriters, on the road backing other artists, and working together on a catalog of songs that they've released sporadically under the Greyhounds moniker. Also on the program, we continue our series "The Man Who Invented Rock and Roll." This week, the late Sam Phillips talks about Rufus Thomas.
