Biographer Vanda Krefft returns to the show to celebrate her wonderful & illuminating new book: EXPECT GREAT THINGS!: How the Katharine Gibbs School Revolutionized the American Workplace for Women (Algonquin Books). We talk about the turn of the (20th) century origins of Katharine Gibbs & her school, the legacy of her executive secretarial course for generations of women, "Gibbs Girls'" descendants' desire to honor their family members, the incredible quality of faculty Gibbs was able to recruit, the risks women had to take to enter the professional workforce, and the Trojan Horse campaign of teaching women to learn how businesses work until they're able to run them themselves. We get into Vanda's desire to write about people who were overlooked in history, how this book veered away from her initial idea, how it required a different mode than her biography of William Fox, the challenges of century-old research into women's lives, what she had to learn about the history of women in America, the myth that the 1920s were liberating for women, and her interest in mid-century America. We also discuss how the Gibbs school declined when the family finally sold it in the late '60s, what she'd like her next book to be about, her experience living in Santa Monica during the LA fires, a lengthy aside about publishing and the changes I've seen, getting inspired by Howard Fishman's book on Connie Converse, and a lot more. Comment on the Show by Sending Mark a Text Message. Are your performance reviews legitimate, or are they tools of deceit? This episode digs deep into the dangerous world of performance defamation in the workplace. We examine the alarming trend where employers, motivated by profit and legal strategies, resort to crafting false narratives about employee performance, especially targeting those who dare to speak up. You'll hear about truth decay—a phenomenon that enables opinions to masquerade as facts—making it difficult for employees to trust their evaluations or their employers. Through compelling stories and expert insights, we'll unravel the cycle of manipulation in workplace assessments, showcasing how even high-performing employees can suddenly find themselves unjustly labeled as incompetent. Additionally, we discuss the disingenuous Performance Improvement Plan process, a technique employers often abuse to push out workers while masking their motives. Join us for insights that shed light on the core issues affecting our identities tied to meaningful work. We challenge listeners to question their evaluations and advocate for a workplace that values truth and fairness. Don't forget to subscribe, share, and leave a review! Today? Those numbers are eerily similar—still around 30% in the U.S. and even lower globally at 21%. This episode delves into the root causes of disengagement, such as lack of meaningful work, inadequate communication, insufficient recognition, and poor management practices. Join HR expert, Wendy Sellers, who specializes in management training and employee engagement, as she shares proven strategies that have significantly improved engagement levels in various organizations. This year's Voice of the American Workplace Survey sheds light on the challenges employers and employees face in today's American workplace. The report underscores the challenges employers face, employee concerns and workplace expectations, and the gap between employer resources and employee needs. By understanding these gaps, the industry can develop innovative solutions that redefine retirement and deliver stronger financial outcomes for US workers. In this episode, Jack talks with Jacquelyn Reardon, Head of US Marketing at Franklin Templeton, about the results of the survey, some key takeaways, and its implications for the future. Key Takeaways [01:17] - What the Voice of the American Workplace Survey is all about. [02:08] - Key takeaways from this year's survey. [18:24] - The need for hyper-personalized employee benefits and engagement. [19:47] - How employers can address issues and concerns in the workplace. [22:38] - Enhancing employee benefits and personalized financial advice. [24:17] - Jacquelyn's interests outside of work. Quotes [02:42] - "Employees are significantly under stress when it comes to their financial health, and they're specifically looking to their employer to help them address those issues and concerns." ~ Jacque Reardon [09:34] - "Financial independence is the north star people are working towards versus traditional retirement. People are feeling less and less likely to be able to meet these key milestones because of the financial stress that they're feeling today due to a whole slew of factors." ~ Jacquelyn Reardon [18:24] - "The number one benefit that people are requesting is personalized benefits. The appetite's there, and the expectation is there from a societal standpoint. So people are absolutely expecting that." ~ Jacquelyn Reardon [23:00] - "We have to come together and figure out how to plug in the best way and do it in a way that will be super user-friendly both for the employer and the employee. We can build this phenomenal tool and resource, but if it's not something that the employer can easily put into their ecosystem and that the employee can easily use and see the benefit of, then there is no point in building these tools." ~ Jacquelyn Reardon Links  Jacquelyn Reardon LinkedIn Voice of the American Workplace Survey | Franklin Templeton Franklin Templeton Morgan Stanley Edmund Murphy Empower Aaron Schumm Vestwell Brian McDonald Connect with our hosts LifeYield Jack Sharry on LinkedIn Jack Sharry on Twitter Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify LinkedIn Twitter Facebook

In this episode of the Employee Survival Guide®, Mark discusses Marijuana Laws and the American Workplace.  Mark explores the proliferation of states legalizing marijuana (aka "weed") and the interplay of medical and recreational weed use among employees.  He explores whether or not employers can ban weed use on and off the clock.  Mark discusses workplace safety and how that changes the dynamic of medical and recreational use of weed by employees.  He discusses drug testing and how the tests are not scientifically correlated to exactly when the employee used the weed, i.e. on or off the clock.  Mark then explores how the courts have handled employment cases involving marijuana use. Finally, Mark encourages both employers and employees to know the law before they make decisions to fire employees and before employees use marijuana off the clock so they do not jeopardize their employment. Listen in and send Mark any comments you have. Today, we'll take a deep dive into The Office, an American mockumentary sitcom television series that aired on NBC between 2005 and 2013. Based on the 2001-2003 BBC television series of the same name, the show consists of nine seasons with a total of 201 episodes. Here are a few facts about this brilliant show that you need to know.1. NBC initially planned on retitling the series, The American Workplace, to differentiate it from the original British version, but later retained the same. However, the show has rechristened The Office: An American Workplace in the UK when it aired on ITV2. Outside of America, it is called "the US office". 2. Actor Ed Helms, who plays Andy in the series, happened to miss seven consecutive episodes in season nine because he was shooting for The Hangover Part III. His absence from those episodes was justified in the show as him taking a three-month-long boat trip with his brother. 3. After the end of season nine, the creators and cast attended ‘The Office wrap party' at the University of Scranton. There, the executive producer of this show, Greg Daniels, revealed that they have retained the props used in their sets and are planning to open a museum dedicated to the show.4. The most talked-about moment of the show was undoubtedly that of Jim proposing to Pam. The 52-second scene was reportedly the most elaborate and expensive scene in the series, and shooting it cost approximately $250,000.If you haven't watched this hit series yet, do so on Amazon Prime Video, Voot and ViWell, that was some lesser-known facts and trivia about The Office, I shall be back again with a new podcast soon with trivia about a new show or film. Until then it's your host Nikhil out of here.

The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) is not our friend. Is CCP takeover of Taiwan imminent? What would happen if Taiwan was a USA territory? The left doesn't acknowledge Chinese censorship. Do they approve of it? Evergrande is a symptom of China's economic woes Is China afraid of its own people? How close has China come to being overthrown? In this episode, Jim Stroud speculates the significance of this development with podcast guest - Donald Wayne. The conversation flows effortlessly as the modern culture is dissected and debated on several fronts. Among them: the alarming increase of anti-white racism, black appeals for segregation and (ironically) defending America as a non-racist country. The conversation later shifts to address medical tyranny, the dissolution of academic standards, Universal Basic Income, the nobility of work and everything else I forgot to mention.
