The stranger The Chair Company gets, the more seriously it has to be treated. Nothing about the show tells the audience when to laugh — its world looks ordinary, its people feel real, and that restraint is exactly what lets the absurdity land. This week on Below the Line, Skid is joined by Costume Designer Nicky Smith and Cinematographer Ashley Connor to discuss their work on The Chair Company, the HBO series created by Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin. Together, they break down how a show rooted in off-kilter comedy relies on rigorous visual logic — from wardrobe and camera movement to pacing, texture, and point of view — to maintain its delicate tonal balance. Our conversation ranges across: Treating the series like a grounded crime or conspiracy drama, using mundane wardrobe and restrained visuals to make moments of surrealism hit harder Ashley's cinematography approach: anchoring the camera to Ron's emotional journey, using aggressive dollies, zooms, and imperfect movement to mirror his unraveling Nicky's costume philosophy of thrifted, worn-in clothing — washing, distressing, and avoiding “newness” so characters feel unmistakably real Designing visual normalcy as misdirection, allowing sudden tonal shifts to surprise the audience without breaking the world of the show The evolving production scale from pilot to series, and how departments learned to stretch limited resources into something that feels expansive Building key sequences like the Episode Five bar chase and the Episode Eight wedding — where every department had to stay in sync to manage the chaos How casting, body types, and costume choices avoid stereotypes, creating a workplace and social world that feels genuinely lived-in Setting up Season Two without knowing the destination — trusting Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin's writing while embracing uncertainty Rather than signaling comedy through exaggeration, The Chair Company finds its power in restraint — proving that the stranger a story becomes, the more important it is that every visual choice feels honest, deliberate, and grounded in character.

Episode 301 – Chair Company, Bagonia & the Anxiety of Being Extremely Online Matt and Bob are back “to pod” and this week they're double-featuring two very different brands of unhinged: Tim Robinson's The Chair Company on HBO and Yorgos Lanthimos' new black comedy Bagonia. First up, they break down why Chair Company's pilot might be an all-timer — deviled eggs, mall-restaurant discourse, wheelbarrow talk, and HR meetings about accidental upskirt eye contact — but why the season's tone, length, and “Scrooge porn” detours make it a tougher hang than I Think You Should Leave or Friendship. There's bouncer Mike, Wazy Wanes, giant wieners, and the eternal question: how many huge bits are too many huge bits? Then they head into the basement with Bagonia, digging into Jesse Plemons' beautifully weird performance, Emma Stone's corporate-speak alien CEO, and a story that sits somewhere between Ari Aster dread and Wes Anderson precision. They unpack conspiracy-brain vs. Big Pharma, torture in a foil-lined basement, corporate “no PTO, but take all the time you need” doublespeak, and an ending that somehow manages to combine telekinesis, exploding heads, and puffy tribunal aliens in a way that's both dark and oddly funny. Along the way, the guys shout out Jim Downey's late-career run, Will Tracy's Onion/Succession DNA, and close with a few rapid-fire watches on their radar: Train Dreams, J. Kelly, Task, Hamnet, and the Safdies' Christmas chaos ride Marty Supreme. If you've ever fallen down a conspiracy rabbit hole, worked in a soul-sucking office, or just love watching deeply weird men completely derail their lives, this one's for you
Clark and Matt take a deep dive into a (maybe) fake corporate website to figure out what the heck is going on with red balls in episode 3 of HBO and Tim Robinson's 'The Chair Company'. Enjoy!

After some downtime Stewart, Rastislav and Ken make their return for Off The Record number 6 of 2025. Kens feature pick is Rampage from 1987 Directed by William Friedkin and starring Michael Biehn. A mostly sombre film about the vampire killer Richard Chase and what the experience was like in the courtroom for the jurors. Even though this was a serious film, Ken recounts a few memorable and funny moments and is on his recommended list.Stewart's greater pick Friendship from 2024 is a story about two neighbours who become great friends, but through the struggles of everyday life have a falling out because the main character is a bit of a born loser. Andrew DeYoung take this classic tale and puts a modern twist on it. The main character played by Tim Robinson is very good in his role. Rasto decides to go the documentary route this time with his 2022 pick called Louis Armstrong's Black & Blues, which explores the life and times of this pioneer of jazz. Directed by Sacha Jenkens using actual footage of Louis Armstrong. Rasto was very pleased with this film and the controversy surrounding Louis Armstrong at the time.We slide back to Ken for another semi-court room drama called Juror No. 2 directed by Clint Eastwood in 2024. Ken was somewhat impressed but also let down at a key moment in the film. Nicholas Hoult stars in the film, And Ken decides this film is worth a better score than our recent review of Cry Macho. After all these serious picks, Stewart from out in left field brings us his tale of the Toxic Avenger from 1984, which in all manor of speaking is a B Movie done so wrong, that it turns out alright! Tons of gore, red ketchup and brutal scenes, not for the faint of heart. Directed by Michael Herz starring Mitch Cohen. This bad boy falls under the classic Troma over the top film. As the name says a nerdy janitor turns into a toxic vigilante after falling into some toxic waste. You can watch the kill count on Youtube if you are brave enough.Rasto brings us back to reality with Three Pines from 2022 which he still gave a half descent score. Created by Emilia di Girolamo and starring Alfred Molina. This is a Canadian Film, from Montreal that explores the life of a small towns sins and how the residents navigate each others crimes while still trying to remain neighbours. There is one other ‘Meh' film that Rasto brought to our attention and that is sleeping Dogs starring Russell Crowe from 2024 which was in his opinion just meh.... This is a public episode. Hosts Chuck and Justin dig into Andrew DeYoung's Friendship, starring Tim Robinson, using its strange and chaotic look at relationships to explore how messy real-life friendships can be. Recapping episodes 1-4 of The Chair Company If ever there was a show that was the voice of literally everyone, it is this one. During every bit of the first four episodes of The Chair Company, the girls couldn't stop saying "this is me. THIS IS ME!" And it kind of is everyone. They talk about the last time they went to a mall and how they would handle the HR complaint if they were in HR. Tim Robinson is one of the greats and he had the girls on the edge of their seats in the first four episodes of this customer service story that takes a wildly different turn. In just four more weeks, they'll recap the last four episodes of season 1, so pull up a chair (Just not one from Tecca!) and get all caught up on this inevitable cult classic.

Nick welcomes TV critic Dan Fienberg back to the podcast for another round of smart, funny, and slightly unhinged TV talk. The two cover everything from Dan's unwavering loyalty to The Simpsons to his unapologetic dislike of Seinfeld, plus a look at the latest SNL hosted by Sabrina Carpenter. Dan also reviews several new shows, including the Stephen King prequel miniseries “It: Welcome to Derry,” the cringe-comedy “The Chair Company” from Tim Robinson, and the unexpectedly gripping true-crime series “Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy.” Then Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to dissect one of Hollywood's biggest misfires, “Wild, Wild West,” before diving into a celebration of cinema's most delightfully eccentric performers — Christopher Walken, Crispin Glover, Sean Young, Willem Dafoe, Malcolm McDowell, and the incomparable Tilda Swinton. Tim Robinson of Blue Yonder talks about returns: the challenges & potential, role of AI, inventory management, tariffs, & the importance of customer experience. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [03.42] Tim's career; how he founded his business, Doddle, and the story behind the name; and how that journey led him to Blue Yonder. “It's quite rare that you isolate and identify supply chain as your chosen goal in life, but I fell into it and have loved it ever since.” [06.34] The current returns landscape, and what Blue Yonder's recent survey revealed about consumer-brand relationships, and how retailers approach returns. “Free and easy access returns, or buy as many as you like and return as many as you like – that philosophy has been one of the major drivers behind the success of ecommerce. How do you create the convenience and the relevance of physical shopping, where I can see a product, touch it, try it on?” [12.10] How tariffs and market turbulence are putting pressure on businesses, squeezing margins; and the importance of customer experience. “This is ultimately an age of uncertainty, if you're in a business that involves crossing borders for any reason. Whilst the challenge around tariffs may have emanated in one part of the world, the reality is that the ripple effect means the whole landscape is re-setting itself – it's a global phenomena now.” “The majority of consumers consider a poor return policy as a bad experience, whether they want to return or not. They may love the product, but now they have a poor sentiment of you and your brand... And if a bad policy is a bad experience, you've lost a customer. ” [20.46] Changing customer expectations and shopping habits, and the challenge of inventory management. “The pace of ever-changing demands is at the heart of everything.” [25.59] The role AI and machine learning can have in overcoming returns and inventory management challenges; and the importance of transparency in consumer communication. “You have complex inventory allocation decisions being made at the time a consumer hits the return button... We're able to orchestrate, influence consumer behavior, and make allocation and replenishment decisions in real-time.” “If we want to change consumer behavior, want them to think more carefully about shopping habits and the choices they make, we should be more transparent with them.” [29.52] The problem and opportunity of returns, and the impact businesses could make by considering returns as a source of extra inventory. [33.28] Blue Yonder's recent acquisition of Optoro, and what that means for customers as they navigate returns and inventory management. [38.57] Why Blue Yonder is so committed to ‘sustainable abundance,' and how businesses can work with them. Tim Robinson is back with The Chair Company, a cringe-com with a mystery (or is it??) at its center, and Variety's Alison Herman is also back to talk about it: the little self-flagellating moments the show gets right, whether it's the Tim Robinson property for people who usually don't enjoy Tim Robinson, and why Robinson is like David Lynch. We went Around The Dial with 9-1-1s old and new, Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy, and The Alabama Solution, and Tara busted out her see! cret! skill! at Canon pitching for a first-season episode of Platonic.
