The previous episode (Nature of Man with Diarmuid Lyng) had generated more discussion and feedback than most other episodes. The feedback had been mixed in the sense that many people related to the content but as many were of the opinion that the retreat or the idea of a retreat 'wasn't for them.' The best way to continue the discussion is to literally do just that. This episode is with Michael Ryan, co-founder and facilitator of Nature of Man. A wellness and meditation expert, Michael gives his perspective on the condition of the Modern (Irish) Man and we discuss holistic benefits of the Nature of Man retreat and the value it can offer anyone and everyone. The next retreat takes place in Donegal from 6th-9th June. Details can be found at natureofman.ie We reference a number of writers / poets in this episode - David Whyte and John Moriarty. Two deadly men well able to put into words the thoughts of everyone of us (and indeed none of us)

Earthkeepers: A Circlewood Podcast on Creation Care and Spirituality
Toward the end of the year Earthkeepers podcast always releases a special holiday episode that breaks from the usual interview mode. In this episode, we're gifting a passage from our friend Christine Sine's book called Celtic Advent: Following an Unfamiliar Path Through Advent. Earthkeepers recommends this book because in it, Christine brings fresh, life-giving perspective on the conventional Western practices of advent. According to those Western practices, the advent season this year begins on Sunday, December 1—so why offer an advent reflection in November? In her book, Christine explains: “for Celtic and Orthodox Christians, advent begins the evening of November 15th – forty days before Christmas Day. Celtic Christians always prayed and fasted for 40 days in preparation for any major life event, whether it be the planting of a new monastic center, the beginning of a new adventure, as well as for preparation for Christmas and Easter.” Given the Celtic theme of the passage, it is read by Brother Seán Aherne, an Irish monk who is very familiar with the St. Kevin story that is featured in this episode.Christine's website, GodspacelightBook: Celtic Advent: Following an Unfamiliar PathBrother Seán Aherne ( born 1946 ) is a Celtic Christian monk living in a small monastery on outskirts of Dublin. He is Director & founding member of the John Moriarty institute for Ecology & Spirituality in Dingle, County Kerry. On the 97th episode of What is a Good Life? podcast, I am delighted to introduce our guest, Diarmuid Lyng. Diarmuid is co-owner of Wild Irish Retreats and Nature of Man. He is a former Wexford hurling captain and a host on Newstalk's flagship sports programme 'Off the Ball'. With Wild Irish Retreats he is part of a team that is focused on the rejuvenation of the Irish language in relation to nature reconnection. With Nature of Man he runs retreats and online programmes with men that creates a space for them to do their own internal spiritual work. He also takes teams/groups of all kinds to the woods for overnight camps that focus on connection; to self, teammate and place. In this enlivening conversation, Diarmuid shares with us his unfolding path of purpose. We explore experiences of being truly listened to, of generosity of spirit, receiving love and developing self-acceptance. All throughout the conversation Diarmuid is pointing to a greater connection with the moment, people, and nature, and we note the significance of consciously leaving space for more aliveness and wildness in our lives. This whole conversation is a wonderful invitation to reconnect with ourselves, nature, and the living, breathing, pulsing experience of life. It only takes a few. Thousands have visited the two-way livestream portal operating on Dublin’s North Earl Street and New York since it was installed less than a week ago. Unfortunately, a minority took to flashing their backsides, grinding their bodies, showing pornographic videos, and footage from 9/11 to viewers in New York. As a result the livestream portal has had to be temporarily closed. Would there have been better behaviour if the portal was operating in a tourist area such as Kerry? Dingle restaurateur John Moriarty spoke to Treasa.
Jerry broadcast from MTU’s North Campus in Tralee for Connect with MTU, a networking event for companies, community groups, and the public. He spoke to Anne Looney who’s MTU Kerry’s external services manager, Gerard Corkery who’s head of the STEM department, and John Moriarty of Rural Food SkillNet. He also spoke to Tim Yeomans who’s Shannon ABC manager, to Tim Fitzmaurice, ImaR manager, Dave Barry who’s a researcher in the circular bioeconomy, and to Kieran O’Donoghue who’s educational outreach manager with AgriTech Ireland. Michael Hall who is head of department at MTU Kerry’s health and leisure and Hazel Byrne who’s the manager of Kerry Sports Academy also spoke to Jerry.

It has been a rather tempestuous year so far! Currently, I am many miles from the boat and have not been able to record any podcasts. I have rather rushed this episode out to update you on the reasons why I have been so quiet of late and to bring you up to date with what has been happening. Apologies for the sound quality of this episode. I do not have my recording gear with me at the moment. For episode 28 of season 2 we welcome back the noble and scholarly Douglas Batchelor of the What Magic is This? A podcast for those curious about Magic, the Occult, Witchcraft, the Esoteric, the Paranormal and the Supernatural. Douglas has been doing sorcery and magic for close to 20 years. And has a wealth of knowledge and experience. Today we focus on how his practice and areas of interest have changed since his recent move to the west coast of Canada. And we discuss his recent patreon show on Isobel Gowdie, his remarkable memory and his ability to communicate complex ideas. The title for this show is a reference to a phrase used by John Moriarty in one of his many Irish radio interviews where he talked about not sitting well with the modern world and feeling its separation from nature acutely. Consequently he left his academic career and moved home to Ireland to Connemara in Co. Galway. The conversation with Douglas reminded me of Moriarty's phrase not least because of their both moving to a rural location but in a topic that came up in the plus section of the show where we discuss the horror of poorly done TV and film adaptations. And how film becomes less story and more spectacle, that as a narrative form it is exhausted, the well has run dry. We discuss the need for new stories, new dreams and round out the conversation with hope and belief in the young generations and generation to be born will dream new stories and new art into being. The show notes are extensive for this one so do check them out there is a wealth of material to be explored there. Enjoy! Show notes: Website https://whatmagicisthis.com/ WMiT? Autumn is a good time for contemplation and a place by the fireside encourages reflection. Recently I have been revisiting the journals of Thomas Merton and, with the help of John Moriarty, I have found myself relearning some valuable lessons. The Edens of our flourishing are sometimes not quite what we dream them to be. Journal entry:15th November, Wednesday"Across the fields, A train clatters it's way to Birmingham. The lit carriages flickering like A procession of glow worms Through the hedges. A rabbit's tail strobes white in my torchlight. The hill becomes alive with Unblinking ovine eyes."Episode Information:In this episode I read a number of entries from:Thomas Merton's Dancing in the Water of Life published in 2009 by HarperCollins. For more information on John Moriarty and the ‘yoga of horror' see his What the Curlew Said published in 2007 by Lilliput Press. Jack Baumgartner is an amazing artist, farmer, poet, woodcarver, storyteller, and musician. He recently shared a video of himself reading a poem in which he said he was was no longer a Christian. Rather than jump to conclusions, we decided to talk with Jack to hear his heart behind the poem. In this episode, Sam and Jack take a winding journey through faith, what it means to live in a God-created world, how to be whole and integrated, the meaning of sin and failure, the meaning of Jack's art, and Jack's ongoing call to follow God. There are many treasures in this episode, please listen with an open mind and see what God is saying to you. You can see Jack's amazing artwork (and plenty of his farm!) on his Instagram account @baumwerkj. The music in this episode was written and performed by Jack Baumgartner. The song at the beginning is "Through the Windy" and the song at the end is "John Moriarty." His original poem (which you can watch him read on Instagram) is "The Oxen are Dead and the Smoke is Rising." In this episode, |Aron tells the story of the Voyage of Bran. The mythic King who sailed off to follow the Mag Mel, the plain of honey that lead him to the other world. After hearing enchanting music, which, lulled him into a deep and restful sleep, Bran met a woman from the other world and she invited him to join her in the land of Promise. With the promise of no pain, suffering or death in a land surrounded by feasts and music, joy and laughter, Bran was eager to set off to experience the joys of the otherworld. Upon meeting Mannanon Mac Lir he was reminded how easy it is to perceive the magic of this world in the mundane and ordinary sights around. And in doing so, Bran was transported to the many coloured lands. Before we get to the 200th episode we are telling this story because it is the first story we worked on as a staged retelling back in 2013/14. Homicide detectives and even killers categorize the slain four University of Idaho students as “shiny” victims. They were young, innocent, and attractive. John Moriarty, the former Inspector General of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, says such cases motivate investigators to go the extra mile to solve the crime. “It's the ultimate good versus evil,” said Moriarty. Investigators used sophisticated techniques detailed in an arrest warrant affidavit, including DNA, cell phone data, and ubiquitous video surveillance cameras, to charge 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger with murdering four University of Idaho students in their off-campus home on November 13, 2022. If Kohberer, a Ph.D. criminology student at the University of Washington, is convicted, it will prove the adage that some criminals return to the scene of the crime. In this episode of True Crime Reporter®, John Moriarty and investigative reporter Robert Riggs walk listeners through details contained in the arrest warrant. Moriarty, the former Inspector General of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, used the same means to hunt down fugitives wanted for murder and violent crimes. He also wrote countless arrest and search warrant affidavits, which Riggs relied on as the factual basis for his crime reporting. You may recall that Moriarty, the transplanted Irish cop from New York City, is featured in True Crime Reporter®'s series about serial killer Kenneth McDuff and the Telly Award-winning television documentary on Fox Nation streaming titled Freed To Kill. Kohberger made a brief court appearance on January 5th of 2023, with cuts on his face, raising questions if the suspect's alleged victims had fought back. Based on the review of the arrest warrant affidavit by Moriarty and Riggs, you will hear their thoughts about a possible motive for the murders. If Kohberer, a Ph.D. criminology student at the University of Washington, is convicted, it will prove the old adage that some criminals return to the scene of the crime. Plus, he wrote countless arrest and search warrant affidavits, and Riggs relied on such affidavits as the factual basis for his crime reporting. You may recall that Moriarty, a transplanted Irish cop from New York City, is featured in True Crime Reporter®'s series about serial killer Kenneth McDuff and the Telly Award-winning television documentary on Fox Nation streaming titled Freed To Kill. Rain and mud are all around us at the moment, but there is wonder there too. The ancient myth of ‘The Voyage of Bran' helps us to find the extraordinary within the ordinary and (with apologies to Simon and Garfunkel) the beauty of Tuesday Morning, 5.30am.Journal entry: 13th January, Friday“Boggy ground, although I am high on the hill. Standing in the cluster of four oaks waiting. Waiting for I don't know what.I turn, and behind me, the sunrises in red and gold Through the dense brush of woodland that lines the horizon. How wonderful is that? What is even more wonderful is that, further to the west, Another sunrise will break over other woodlands, but this one Will be through the lattice work of these trees I stand under. And so the sunrise is shouldered across the land from tree to tree And the one human who is waiting… … for something.”Episode Information:In this episode I read extracts from ‘The Voyage of Bran' (Imram Brain). I use the Kuno Meyer's translation of it which can be read here: Voyage of Bran.I also read the first lines of William Blake's ‘Auguries of Innocence.' Synopsis On today's date in 1956, one of the most successful of all American operas had its first performance at the Center Opera House in Colorado. “The Ballad of Baby Doe” was created by composer Douglas Moore and librettist John Latouche, and was based on a real-life tale of love and loss that had played out in that state. Elizabeth McCourt Tabor, better known as “Baby Doe,” became the second wife of the Colorado prospector, businessman, and politician Horace Tabor in 1883. Tabor's messy divorce and remarriage to the young and beautiful Baby Doe was a major scandal at the time. Tabor was immensely wealthy, and had built an Opera House that bears his name and still stands in Leadville, Colorado, where he met Baby Doe. In 1899, Tabor had lost his entire fortune, and after his death, Baby Doe lived on in a poor miner's shack near Leadville, where she was found frozen to death in 1935. And it was on a cold winter's day – a year before the premiere of their new opera – that Moore and Latouche paid a visit to Tabor's Opera House in Leadville, and stood on its stage for inspiration. A witness of their visit recalled: “I was intensely aware of a great and eerie silence that suddenly came over the building. If ever there were ghosts of the past in the Tabor Opera House I could believe that they were there at that moment!” Music Played in Today's Program Douglas Moore (1893-1969) – The Ballad of Baby Doe (Jan Grissom, sop; Central City Opera Orchestra; John Moriarty, cond.) Today I am going to read you guys a story I read recently that deeply touched me. It's by John Moriarty, and it's called A Hut at the Edge of the Village.
Can you imagine yourself falling in love with a serial killer or murderer to the point you will give up your family, career, and even your life for them? A veteran Alabama jail officer, Vicky White, did just that in April of 2022 when she staged a getaway with a capital murder suspect. The 56-year-old White had an unblemished record. She was on her last day of work before retirement. Her colleagues had just voted her Corrections Employee of the Year for a fifth time before she went on the run. At first, the Lauderdale County Sheriff in Florence, Alabama, thought White had been kidnapped when she disappeared with a 36-year-old Casey White, no relation. 56-year-old Vicky White But White had been involved in a two-year-long jailhouse romance with a career violent criminal named Casey White, no relation to her. He certainly didn't have fashion model looks. Casey White, a 300-pound, muscular, burr-headed 6 foot 9, heavily tattooed inmate, was already serving a 75-year prison sentence for murder and other charges from a terrifying rampage. Confederate Flag Tatoo Signifies Casey White's Membership In Racist Prison Gang He had a large image of a Confederate flag tattooed on his back with the words Southern Pride connected by a chain to the image of a pit bulldog. It signified his membership in a white racist prison gang called the Southern Brotherhood, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. The tattooed sleeve covering his right arm featured large SS symbols favored by neo-Nazi gangs Casey White was awaiting trial for stabbing 58-year-old Connie Ridgeway to death in her apartment. It had been a cold case for five years until White suddenly confessed in a letter to investigators. He later pleaded not guilty because of mental disease and was awaiting trial in the Lauderdale County Jail. But was his confession a ploy to get back to the jail to see Vicky White, its supervisor? According to the convicted felon's mother, Casey White called the jailer his wife, and she visited his son and grandson and even gave them Christmas presents. Vicky White gave a phony cover story when she took the capital murder suspect out of jail, claiming it was for a mental health examination. A week earlier, she sold her house for 95 thousand dollars, far below market value, sold her car, and applied for retirement. She also bought an AR-15 rifle, a shotgun, men's clothes, and sex toys. Vicky White had been making dry runs to escape the jail with Casey White handcuffed and wearing a jail-issued jumpsuit in the backseat of her patrol car. The couple's getaway came to a deadly end in Indiana when U.S. Marshals rammed their Cadillac during a high-speed chase. Marshals pulled Vicky White out of the wreckage, still gripping the handgun that she used to kill herself. So what could she have possibly seen in a violent felon to throw her life away? Investigative reporter Robert Riggs searches for answers in this episode of the True Crime Reporter® Podcast. He interviews John Moriarty, the former Texas Department of Criminal Justice Inspector General. You may recall from our earlier episodes about serial killer Kenneth McDuff that Moriarty was an undercover prison investigator who played a significant role in catching McDuff. The tough-talking transplanted Irish cop from New York also tricked McDuff into revealing the location of the body of one of his victims before he was executed. Moriarty is also featured in the opening of the promo about our five-part documentary news series about McDuff titled Freed To Kill on Fox Nation Streaming. The stories of women and men falling in love with killers may sound like pulp fiction, but it is all too common inside jails and prisons. Serial killer Kenneth McDuff held back on revealing where he buried Colleen Reed's body. McDuff and his accomplice Hank Worley abducted Ms. Reed from an Austin car wash in 1991. Seven years have passed, and the clock is ticking down toward McDuff's execution for her murder and that of Melissa Northrup. Prison investigator John Moriarty, federal prosecutor Bill Johnston, and U.S. Marshal Mike McNamara spent hours on Texas death row trying to get McDuff to reveal the location of his victims' bodies. The big break comes when Moriarty hears McDuff complaining about a painful toothache.
