JJ Grey & Mofro was launched in the early 2000's centering on his hometown of Jacksonville, FL. A favorite among music critics, the band has toured extensively throughout the U.S. picking up a loyal fan base for over 23 years. JJ's concerts have a strong "sing along" vibe that involves the entire audience. Multi-award winning program director Ray White sat down, backstage, with JJ before his soundcheck to talk about his interesting beginnings in England, musical style & influences and his latest album Olustee. In our showcase segment we feature two great musicians who have past ties with Greg Allman - Warren Haynes and Randall Bramblett. Their latest solo albums, respectively, are Million Voices Whisper and Paradise Breakdown. We go deep south, for this edition of Sittin' In With The CAT!
Daryl Hance is a songwriter and guitar player from Duval County, Florida, whose music has been in my life for over twenty years. I first learned of Daryl during his time with the band Mofro, now J.J. Grey and Mofro. He hasn't been with that band for a while and since gone on to carve a handful of wonderful solo records. I've long said his guitar playing is like a fingerprint. Maybe it's the Florida boy in me. Maybe it's the country boy in me. That swampy sound so few can capture with authenticity is hyper-present in Daryl's work and I am ready for more and more. Daryl's latest record is called “Devil's Millhopper,” it is available wherever you consume music, and you can buy a digital copy on bandcamp.com. JJ Grey joins me this week to get Season 8 rolling in style!JJ is an incredible singer, songwriter, guitar player and frontman for his band JJ Grey and Mofro, based in the Jacksonville, Florida area. He's been making soulful, brash, and deeply authentic soul and rock n roll records since the release of “Blackwater” in 2001. JJ has a brand new album out now called “Olustee”, which is a remarkable record due to the stellar material and inspired performances perfromances, but also in how it was made. We had a chance to sit down and talk about how it all came together, as well as his songwriting and recording process, how he records his vocals with a $15 microphone, getting janky guitar sounds (janky is his own term, as you'll hear), along with self-producing for the first time and working on mixing the new record with Vance Powell. This week we welcome Jordan Sokel of PRESSING STRINGS. Pressings Strings lends credence to my feeling of never missing opening bands. I saw the band take an audience to a place they were not expecting to go, right to the merch table to purchase everything they could from the band. Pressing Strings first formed in 2006 while Sokel was still in college. The band officially debuted in 2008 with their album, Where We Are, and now has a deep catalog that includes the albums Episodes (2010), Pressing Strings (2012), Life of a Tree (2013), Owe the Source (2015), and Settle In (2020) as well as two EPs, Most of Us (2016) and Morning Takes (2021). As Pressing Strings built up their impressive live show and paid their dues gigging, their fame was spreading throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard, leading to headlining venues across Maryland and Washington, DC and frequent festival appearances at Peach Music Festival, Firefly, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Floydfest, and more. Over the last decade, Pressing Strings has also toured and opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Gov't Mule, Toad the Wet Sprocket, JJ Grey & Mofro, Rachael Yamagata, Neal Francis, The Toadies, Jerry Douglas, Sam Roberts Band, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), Rayland Baxter, and Junior Marvin of the Wailers. Our guest today is one Chris Rider of Liverpool, PA. Chris is a photographer and an avid concertgoer. You can find him throughout south Central Pennsylvania and other parts of the Commonwealth behind a camera lens at a wide variety of venues including the Englewood near Hershey, PA and The Whitaker Center in Harrisburg. We spoke in late July of 2021, one week before he was set to snap pictures of one of his all time favorite bands in action at Spy Glass Ridge Winery in Sunbury, PA. So you may be wondering aloud now - what band are we referring to? Well, that would be a fantastic blues rock outfit from Jacksonville, FL known as JJ Grey and Mofro and their 2007 record titled Country Ghetto. Country Ghetto was the band's third album and released on Alligator Records. Enjoy the conversation!

George Sluppick is an American drummer born in Memphis, Tennessee, specializing in blues, funk, soul and R&B music. In 1986, he graduated from Overton, a prestigious creative & performing arts high school. Growing up in Memphis, he shared the stage with many legends, including BB King and Rufus Thomas and just one year after his high school graduation at age 19, he went on the road with blues guitarist Albert King. He has since played with Charlie Hunter, JJ Grey & MoFro, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, and many others, and has just released a Memphis-infused sample pack through Yurt Rock. In this episode, George talks about: The process of creating and marketing his new sample pack Why he moved from his hometown of Memphis to the smaller town of Greensboro, NC The influence of Idris Muhammed and the idea of genre-free drumming
From the days of playing greasy local juke joints to headlining major festivals, JJ Grey remains an unfettered, blissful performer, singing with a blue-collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. His presence before an audience is something startling and immediate, at times a funk rave-up, other times a sort of mass-absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. When you see JJ Grey and his band Mofro live—and you truly, absolutely must—the man is fearless.Onstage, Grey delivers his songs with compassion and a relentless honesty, but perhaps not until Ol' Glory has a studio record captured the fierceness and intimacy that defines a Grey live performance. “I wanted that crucial lived-in feel,” Grey says of Ol' Glory, and here he hits his mark. On the new album, Grey and his current Mofro lineup offer grace and groove in equal measure, with an easygoing quality to the production that makes those beautiful muscular drum-breaks sound as though the band has set up in your living room.Despite a redoubtable stage presence, Grey does get performance anxiety—specifically, when he's suspended 50 feet above the soil of his pecan grove, clearing moss from the upper trees.“The tops of the trees are even worse,” he laughs, “say closer to 70, maybe even 80 feet. I'm not phobic about heights, but I don't think anyone's crazy about getting up in a bucket and swinging all around. I wanted to fertilize this year but didn't get a chance. This February I will, about two tons—to feed the trees.”When he isn't touring, Grey exerts his prodigious energies on the family land, a former chicken-farm that was run by his maternal grandmother and grandfather. The farm boasts a recording studio, a warehouse that doubles as Grey's gym, an open-air barn, and of course those 50-odd pecan trees that occasionally require Grey to go airborne with his sprayer. For devoted listeners, there is something fitting, even affirmative in Grey's commitment to the land of his north Florida home. The farms and eddying swamps of his youth are as much a part of Grey's music as the Louisiana swamp-blues tradition, or the singer's collection of old Stax records. As a boy, Grey was drawn to country-rockers, including Jerry Reed, and to Otis Redding and the other luminaries of Memphis soul; Run-D.M.C., meanwhile, played on repeat in the parking lot of his high school (note the hip-hop inflections on “A Night to Remember”). Merging these traditions, and working with a blue-collar ethic that brooked no bullshit, Grey began touring as Mofro in the late '90s, with backbeats that crossed Steve Cropper withGeorge Clinton and a lyrical directness that made his debut LP Blackwater (2001) a calling-card among roots-rock aficionados. Soon, he was expanding his tours beyond America and the U.K., playing ever-larger clubs and eventually massive festivals, as his fan base grew from a modest group of loyal initiates into something resembling a national coalition.Grey takes no shortcuts on the homestead, and he certainly takes no shortcuts in his music. While he has metaphorically speaking “drawn blood” making all his albums, his latest effort, Ol' Glory, found him spending more time than ever working over the new material. A hip-shooting, off-the-cuff performer (often his first vocal takes end up pleasing him best), Grey was able to stretch his legs a bit while constructing the lyrics and vocal lines to Ol' Glory. “I would visit it much more often in my mind, visit it more often on the guitar in my house,” Grey says. “I like an album to have a balance, like a novel or like a film. A triumph, a dark brooding moment, or a moment of peace—that's the only thing I consistently try to achieve with a record.”Grey has been living this balance throughout his career, and Ol' Glory is a beautifully paced little film. On “The Island,” Grey sounds like Coleridge

Daryl Hance saunters into The Marinade. Daryl is a singer, songwriter, and guitar player whose music means SO much to me. He has a distinct way of playing guitar that I adore. Just a couple of licks and I can instantly recognize a Daryl Hance tune. Describing his music is a next to impossible task. It feels like the soundtrack to my life- swampy, bluesy, funky, sexy, soulful stuff. I am honored to bring this one to you.
My guest today is bassist, Todd Smallie. After his family moved to Atlanta at the age of 14, Todd got very involved with the local scene and attended the Atlanta Institute of Music, where he got to learn from the likes of Jimmy Herring. Connections with Herring, Tinsley Ellis, Col. Bruce Hampton, and others led him to an audition with The Derek Trucks Band in his early 20s. He toured and recorded with Derek up until 2010 when Derek teamed up with Susan Tedeschi to start Tedeschi Trucks Band. Todd didn't sit stagnant for too long, as he started playing with JJ Grey & Mofro just a few months later, and has spent the last 11 years as a member of that group. (NOTE: The band, Greyhounds, made up of former Mofro members Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube were my guests on the very first episode of this podcast). When he's not touring, Todd can be found playing at bars, clubs, and festivals with an assortment of acts all over Colorado. In our conversation, we chat about getting back on the road for the first time since COVID, his upbringing and history as a player, and all of the new projects he's involved in locally. George Sluppick, professional drummer, has played with such acts as Albert King, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, JJ Grey and Mofro, Luther Dickinson, Robert Walter, Charlie Hunter, Melvin Sparks and numerous other music luminaries. Sluppick joins the podcast to talk life on the road, including several visits to Clemson when Mofro played a popular music venue called The Joint. He shares details on the tumultuous, volatile nature of life on the road with Chris Robinson and what he learned from that experience. He also recalls as a 19-year-old playing for Albert King and regularly being cussed out on stage by the legendary bluesman. Musicians everywhere have had their worlds rocked by the pandemic over the past year, and Sluppick shares how he's adapted to continue making a living doing what he loves. Sluppick is a widely respected soul/funk drummer known for honoring the song and providing a thick, groovy backbone. Noted music critic Ben Ratliff once wrote: “George Sluppick puts a lot of funk into a medium tempo, and recalls the kings of heavy foot: musicians like John Bonham and Gregg Errico from Sly and the Family Stone, who drove their bass-drum beats into your spine.” George and his Memphis-based organ trio, The City Champs, recently released their third album: "Luna 68."
Today's guest is touring guitarist and songwriter, Shawn Eckels. He's perhaps known best in the Colorado scene as the longtime touring guitarist in Andy Frasco & The U.N. (Note: Andy Frasco was on episode 43 of this podcast, and their day-to-day manager, Brody Danger was on episode 9 and 57). Aside from his work with the U.N., Eckels has been making a name for himself as a touring artist since the 90s when he traveled the country with his Springfield, Missouri based group, Speakeasy. That band played the first Wakarusa Festival and toured with the likes of Umphrey's McGee and JJ Grey & Mofro. He also recently started a power trio with Colorado mainstays Todd Smallie (Derek Trucks, JJ Grey & Mofro) and Shaun Gilmour. In our conversation, we chat about his experiences on the road and his collaborations as a songwriter. Shawn also mentions taking therapy through the non-profit organization, Backline, which connects music industry professionals and their families with a trusted network of mental health and wellness providers. If this is of interest to you or anyone in your network, go to backline.care for more info. Austin based blues/rock/soul duo, The Greyhounds have been at it since 1999 when Anthony Farrell answered an ad in LA Weekly that Andrew Trube put out looking for a keyboard player. Since that time, the then LA now Austin based musical duo has released several of their own albums, have written songs that have been performed by the likes of Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, and have served as members of JJ Grey & Mofro. In this inaugural episode of Middle Class Rock Star, Farrell and Trube talk about their history together and share some of their experiences from 20 years on the road.
Some small format changes in this edition of The Roadhouse - all intended to keep me out of the way of the music. But that doesn't diminish the fine quality of the music. Johnny Laws, Mofro, Memphis Minnie, Long John Hunter, and Susan Tedeschi lead the way in another hour of the finest blues you've never heard, the 141st Roadhouse Pod cast.
