The espionage TV series, Homeland, brought David Harewood international fame but he is also known as the first Black actor to play Othello at the UK's National Theatre when he was in his early 30s. Now, aged almost 60, he is reprising the role of the Moor in Shakespeare's tragedy. The character of Othello is a skillful General, and the only person of colour in the Venetian army. He and Desdemona, the daughter of a rich and prominent citizen, fall in love and marry, against her father's wishes. This autumn's production at the Haymarket Theatre in London's West End is directed by Tom Morris, who co-created War Horse, which has been seen by more than eight million people around the world. Caitlin Fitzgerald stars as Desdemona and Toby Jones as Iago, with music by P J Harvey. Julian May follows David Harewood, Tom Morris and the cast from the beginning of rehearsal to the opening night as they work together to bring to light the dark themes of power, rage and desire in Shakespeare's great play of duplicity, jealousy and deadly masculinity.

In the mid-20th century, many in academia assumed that serious philosophy had little room for Christian belief. But in the past fifty-plus years, something remarkable has happened—a quiet revolution in the philosophy departments of leading universities. Christian philosophers have not only entered the conversation; they've shaped it, challenged prevailing assumptions, and earned a respected place in scholarly dialogue. In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Greg Ganssle, author, philosopher, and Department Chair of Talbot School of Theology's Philosophy Department. We explore how the revival of Christian philosophy began, the thinkers who helped spark it, and what it means for students of faith navigating the intellectual climate of today's colleges in all academic departments. In this podcast we discuss: Why conversations about what is really real (including God) were off the table in the early 20th Century What happened in the 1960s to change this climate in our universities How these changes opened the door for Christian philosophy to re-enter the academic conversation The importance of intentionally uniting biblical truth and philosophical truth, and of forming community among Christian philosophers The methodology and strategy of Christian philosophers to renew their discipline for God's glory How Christian philosophers earned respect for their perspectives The state of apologetics (applied philosophy) today and in the future How students in other majors can apply what we learn from the renaissance of Christian thought in philosophy What insight from philosophy has been most helpful to him personally in his walk with Christ Resources mentioned during our conversation: The Society of Christian Philosophers (Journal: Faith and Philosophy) The Evangelical Philosophical Society (Journal: Philosophia Christi) Alvin Plantinga, God and Other Minds: A Study of the Rational Justification of Belief in God Rivendell Institute at Yale University Greg Ganssle, A Reasonable God: Engaging the New Face of Atheism Paul Gould, Cultural Apologetics: Renewing the Christian Voice, Conscience, and Imagination in a Disenchanted World Greg Ganssle, Our Deepest Desires: How the Christian Story Fulfills Human Aspirations Clifford Williams, Existential Reasons for Belief in God: A Defense of Desires and Emotions for Faith Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine College Faith podcasts on Community JP Moreland, The Recalcitrant Imago Dei: Human Persons and the Failure of Naturalism Stan Wallace, Have We Lost Our Minds? Tom Morris is the author of Always the Music, a book I consider a must-read for anyone looking to understand the ins and outs of the classical music business—how it operates, its challenges, and the fascinating personalities involved. Tom has had an extraordinary journey in the world of music, having experienced it all from multiple perspectives. He started as a percussionist, performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and eventually became the General Manager of the same institution. Later, he served as the Executive Director of the Cleveland Orchestra for 17 years, where he made a lasting impact. Most recently, he was the Artistic Director of the renowned Ojai Music Festival, a position he held from 2004 to 2019. In our conversation, we delve into many aspects of his book and his life, a life filled with passion, dedication, and invaluable insights into the classical music world. In Part 1, we explore Tom's early musical journey, beginning as a percussion student and the significant influence of Vic Firth, the legendary timpanist of the Boston Symphony. From there, Tom moved into a pivotal role as the General Manager of the BSO. Along the way, he formed lasting friendships with some of the most influential figures in classical music, including composer Oliver Knussen, conductor John Williams—who joined the Boston Pops in 1980—and the visionary Pierre Boulez. We also discuss Tom's time at the Cleveland Orchestra, where he made a lasting impact, especially through successful European tours and innovative programming that helped elevate the orchestra's profile. In Part 2 [Subscriber Content], we turn to an influential figure who shaped Tom's approach to leadership and problem-solving: author Jim Collins, best known for his book Good to Great. Tom shares how he brought Collins in to help refine the Cleveland Orchestra's strategy, offering a fascinating insight into his thinking on organizational development. We also discuss a significant shift in how conductors approach programming, with many now focusing on the concert as a whole rather than simply selecting individual pieces. Finally, we wrap up with Tom reflecting on his time as Artistic Director of the Ojai Music Festival, where his leadership left a lasting legacy.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners?
