Zarqa Nawaz is a writer, film and television producer, published author, public speaker, journalist, creator of Little Mosque on the Prairie, former broadcaster, and star of Zarqa, the CBC Gem comedy series in which she plays a woman named Zarqa, who sells gullible white people brown people things. In season one, a recently divorced Zarqa worked on her business while being pursued by a gaggle of men, ending in a fantastic brawl in the mosque between her ex, her imam, and her white brain surgeon boyfriend. Season two – which hit CBC Gem last fall – began with Zarqa choosing to focus on herself and her business instead of any of the men. Zarqa's pinning all of her hopes on her new product, Love Masala, an intoxicating new scent and love potion from her company, Zarqish Delights. And what better way to reach the masses than with an endorsement from global brand ambassador Pious Pinky Pervez, a Muslim social media influencer with millions of followers played with pious pink perfection by friend of the podcast Aliza Vellani? Aliza portrayed Layla on Little Mosque on the Prairie, and so Zarqa is something of a reunion between Zarqa and Aliza, except this time, they're on the same side of the camera. In this compelling conversation with Sabrina Rani Furminger, Zarqa and Aliza reflect on Little Mosque on the Prairie, their experience shooting Zarqa more than a decade later, what diversity and representation looks like in the comedy sphere, and Zarqa's adventures in stand-up comedy. My guest on this episode is Claire Ross Dunn. Claire is not only a novelist, whose first book, At Last Count, was published in 2022 by Invisible Publishing, but also a story editor and producer for television, where she has worked on obscure little shows like Little Mosque on the Prairie and Degrassi: The Next Generation. At Last Count was named a Best Book of 2022 by the Globe and Mail. Claire and I talk about how she felt like a complete newbie shifting from the film-and-TV world to that of books, how she discovered many of the skills she learned in the former were transferable to the latter, and how an early success at getting Devo to play her high school pretty much set the pattern for her entire creative career. Aliza Vellani originally joined us in July 2021 to talk about her work in the first season of Netflix's Sweet Tooth. Sweet Tooth draws its inspiration from Jeff Lemire's comic book series about a boy who's half-human and half deer navigating a world that has been devastated by a virus that has killed a lot of people and led to the mysterious emergence of human-animal hybrid babies. Aliza plays Rani Singh. Rani has the virus, but is a rare long-term survivor, thanks to her doctor-husband Aditya's devotion and mysterious life-saving treatments, which we discover involves slaughtering hybrid children. The series shoots in New Zealand but features two Vancouver actors: Aliza as Rani and Christian Convery as the titular Sweet Tooth himself. Both Aliza and Christian won awards for their Sweet Tooth performances at the 2022 Leo Awards.Earlier this month, Sweet Tooth and Rani were back for another eight-episode journey that somehow managed to at once thrill, chill, entertain, and devastate audiences. Throughout season two, Rani reckons with karma, and the moral quandary of her predicament. As she says early on, “How many lives for mine? Will we reap what we sow?” But as another character observes in that same episode, Rani is one tough cookie. Rani is so very human: vulnerable, loving, conflicted, a little Lady MacBeth, and still feisty as shit. In this wildly fascinating interview, Sabrina Rani Furminger talks Rani and Sweet Tooth with the inimitable Aliza Vellani, and also gets the 4-1-1 on her latest project: a reunion of sorts with the work of Zarqa Nawaz, the brilliant mind behind Little Mosque on the Prairie, in Zarqa. Zarqa Nawaz is a Canadian icon. When she produced the award-winning show ‘Little Mosque on the Prairie' in 2007, the show became a household name. An avowed fan of Nora Efron, Zarqa created an all-Canadian sitcom that had funny and well-rounded Muslim characters. This was a far cry from the stereotypical cookie-cutter Muslim characters that the West had been churning out. And the timing was critical too. In 2007, post 9/11 Islamophobia was at its peak. A Muslim point of view in the arts was practically nonexistent and there was little portrayal of Muslims beyond the tired tropes of either ‘terrorist' or ‘victim'. It's been 15 years since then and Zarqa Nawaz is ready for 2022 with two offerings- her first pop fiction novel ‘Jameela Green Ruins everything' and a web series on CBC Gem called ‘Zarqa'. Her new book is a noir comedy about Jameela who wants to be on the New York Times bestseller list, but instead gets unwittingly entangled in an international conspiracy around a missing Imam. To add to the comical escapades, her CBC web series ‘Zarqa' is about a shallow, self-centered Muslim woman who will stop at nothing to create her own wellness empire- much like Gwyneth Paltrow's ‘Goop'. Hilarity ensues as she also tries to get even with her ex-husband for dating a White yoga instructor half her age! Join us as we talk about her producing one of Canada's most successful sitcoms, her immigrant upbringing (“Failure was never an option!”), and growing up as a bullied brown kid in Canada. Zarqa Nawaz is going through a bit of a rebirth. It's been roughly decade since the end of her hit show 'Little Mosque on the Prairie'. Recently, Zarqa got into stand-up comedy, she's about to star in the web series ZARQA, and she is on the verge of releasing her first novel, 'Jameela Green Ruins Everything', a dark comedy about American intervention in the Middle East.Zarqa talks about using comedy to address uncomfortable or taboo topics, from dating and divorce in Muslim culture, to the rise of ISIS. The human brain comes hardwired to pay attention to stories—whether in the form of personal narrative, collective myths or gossip—and prioritize them over dry facts and figures. So how can storytelling be used to challenge racism and Islamophobia? Why are counter-stories so important for nurturing equity and what lessons are relevant for organizational leaders? Join Shakil Choudhury in conversation with Zarqa Nawaz, author of the award-winning book, Laughing All the Way to the Mosque, and creator of the internationally acclaimed show Little Mosque on the Prairie, the world's first sitcom featuring Muslim characters living in the West. Shakil and Zarqa will be talking about their new books, what it's means to occupy a Muslim identity 20 years after 9/11, and they use stories to educate as well as entertain.
It's new episode time...We go reverse Three's Company this time around as we invite Chris Starr from Atoms to Ashes to come on the program and gabber with us about all of the things. This week those things are: the return of The Expanse for a short and final season, a new show from the creator of Little Mosque on the Prairie, and all the big news that came out of DC Fandome. I throw some Flying F...ks at recently-released run and gun zombie shoot em up, Back 4 Blood, and we discuss/review Candyman 2021 and Candyman 1992.Stick around after that as we let Chris take over the airwaves and tell you about the stuff and such that Atoms to Ashes has on the horizon, before he breaks into an impromptu and acoustic rendition of their song, "Like A Bullet" (T may have had a hand in that last little bit happening).Enjoy!!
Aliza Vellani portrays Rani in Sweet Tooth, the critically acclaimed eight-part post-apocalyptic fantasy series that hit Netflix in early June. Sweet Tooth draws its inspiration from Jeff Lemire's comic book series about a boy who's half-human and half deer navigating a world that has been devastated by a virus that has killed a lot of people and led to the mysterious emergence of human-animal hybrid babies. The Vancouver actress plays Rani Singh. Rani has the virus, but is a rare long-term survivor, thanks to her doctor-husband Aditya's devotion and mysterious life-saving treatments. As Rani, Aliza is vulnerable, strong, funny, and as hopelessly devoted to her husband as he is to her. It's a much different role than the other character for which she is widely known: that of the teenaged Layla Siddiqui on CBC's iconic comedy Little Mosque on the Prairie – a role in which both Aliza and Layla grew up before our very eyes. In this fascinating, funny, and frank episode, Aliza discusses the magic of working on a post-apocalyptic-but-hopeful fantasy series about a pandemic during a pandemic, why representation matters, and how Little Mosque on the Prairie changed the game. This weeks guest has a bio that's so impressive, and she continues to dazzle - it's Kirstine Stewart! If her name sounds familiar it might be because she is a high profile media executive and author of the bestselling book: Our Turn. She is currently the Head of Shaping the Future of Media at the World Economic Forum. She was formerly the Head of English language services at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Vice-President of Media at Twitter, and President and Chief Revenue Officer of TribalScale...to name a few.Kirstine is married to the Honourable Zaib Shaikh, the former star of Little Mosque on the Prairie, and the current consul general of Canada in Los Angeles. At hear 17:35 Kirstine Stewart share a story about the right way to handle a sales deal."One of my earliest sales opportunities was to sell The Raccoons to Saudi Arabian television. They were willing to buy it site unseen, the BBC had just bought it, France 2 had just bought it, it was selling wildly globally, and it's a kids show - so should be relatively safe. But when I warned them that, ya know, given that they're a Muslim country, and that some of the main characters were pigs.... that they shouldn't be buying the same site unseen. That might want to consider that before doing so. I could have in that pitch made that sale immediately, but it was not the right deal to close. They said thank you very much, they did not buy the show, they came back later and bought a whole lotta other content afterwards anyways. So understanding what you client or audience needs is so important, and the authenticity means you're giving them what they need and what they want - and exactly that."Check out Kirstine Stewart's book! - Our TurnCheck out the book! - Fearless: Girls with Dreams, Women with VisionThe Fearless Women Podcastfearlesswomenpodcast@gmail.comThe Beacon AgencyThe World Economic ForumSponsors:BDCLockheed MartinExport Development Canada
This week on the Richard Crouse Show Podcast we meet Craig Taylor, author of "New Yorkers: A City and Its People in Our Time." Taylor is a chronicler of some of the world's greatest cities. His book "Londoners" was called the "best book about London in at least a decade" and the new one on New York City, which is made up of profiles of bodega cashiers, hospital nurses, elevator repairmen, emergency dispatchers; the people who wire the lights at the top of the Empire State Building, clean the windows of Rockefeller Center, and keep the subway running. It's a book about the New York you don't often read about and it is already getting rave reviews. The Independent called it, “Jaw-dropping…enthralling…Start spreading the news: Taylor's book is a stunning work of modern social history." Then Anthony Q. Farrell joins us. He's a former stand up comedian who has written for "The Office," was executive story editor for "Little Mosque on the Prairie" and is known for his work as a writer on the Nickelodeon sitcom "The Thundermans." He's back with two new shows "The Parker Andersons" and "Amelia Parker" which you'll find on the Super Channel. What makes these shows unique is that they are two stand-alone comedy series, each with their own storylines and episodes, but are connected by larger overarching plot lines tying the two independent shows together. Finally, you know my guest Lucas Hedges from his Academy Award nominated performance in "Manchester by the Sea" and you've seen him in "Lady Bird" and the film "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri." His latest movie, "French Exit" has him starring opposite Michele Pfeiffer. He joins us to talk about his claim that he took on the role of the son of a soon to be broke Manhattan socialite because he wanted to be bored while playing a character.

Marwa, Massara, Elias, Mouna and I discuss how much religions, culture weighs in a couple.
When we say we are fed UP with the Muslim representation on movies/TV shows as of late, we were not kidding. Tune in to one of our most opinionated episodes where we go in on the show Ramy (#cantrelate) and all the ways that it went wrong with telling our stories - or what was marketed as our stories. We also show examples from Cuties, Little Mosque on the Prairie, Man like Mobeen among others to really highlight how to properly tell Muslim narratives and the frustrating tropes that need to be dropped.

This Canadian producer, celebrated for Little Mosque on the Prairie, wanted to do a show about death, too often “depicted as this morbid sad thing. We wanted to do a comedy about death.” The Hollywood (Toronto?) suits rejected her. A merry chat about mortality at the New York Baha’i Center. It was so lovely to have Debra McGrath on the show. Deb seems to me like someone who has gotten good at living in the moment. That is something I continue to work on every day. She has a kind of infectious energy that inspires you to go for more in life. When I was listening back to the interview, I actually had the thought, I am so glad I record these conversations. She provides such nuggets of wisdom with her wealth of experiences, I found myself listening to certain parts of the interview more than once to let the truth of her words ring. Kind of like listening to a great song that you can’t get enough of when you first hear it. In this episode, we discuss what she believes people who are starting out should look for in an agent, how she keeps herself engaged in her creativity, how she looks at giving a “good audition” as the “win” and actually booking the job is “the cherry on top.” She also gave a great piece of advice regarding exercising your creativity, “Do it any way you can and every way you can.” A little about Deb: Deb McGrath has recently been seen on DeGrassi, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town and The Ron James Show. She played Mayor Ann Popowitz for six seasons on Little Mosque on the Prairie. Deb also pursues writing and has a blog of which she is very proud called The Middle Ages. Deb and husband Colin Mochrie have developed a stage show called The Colin and Deb Made-Up Show, which they are starting to tour across the country Follow Debra! Besides being the creator of the award-winning CBC series Little Mosque on the Prairie, Zarqa is an accomplished journalist and author. Her book, Laughing All the Way to the Mosque is a national best seller and was shortlisted for the Stephen Leacock medal for humour. Tapping in all the way from Saskatchewan, I had the pleasure of chatting with Zarqa, learning that her first attempt at novel writing was met with trepidation from her publisher for being too crazy! Who knew that a woman Muslim writer could be too edgy for a mainstream publisher? Learn what she called her book and what she is working on now in Episode 4 of After the Book Ends.
Today I get to drop this wonderful conversation I had with Neil Crone. I don’t think I was prepared for how relaxed and fun it was going to be to speak with Neil. I always love when I meet someone for the first time and my first thought is, “this is going to be fun!” Neil is someone who has been through his fair share of “Schtuff” but has not let his challenges darken the lens with which he views the world. Instead, he is someone who uses his experiences as a way to reach out and connect with others to shine a light on what bonds us to together as humans and propel us forward into the very things that paralyze us. Neil does this with his writing, improv, acting and motivational speaking, but I have a feeling, after speaking with Neil, it is just how he shows up in the world. Some of the things we cover in this episode are, What his biggest challenge as an artist has been, as someone who studied and performed in improv what is the most valuable takeaway he has brought with him into other areas of his life and what major change he would like to see happen in the entertainment industry. A little about Neil: Neil is an actor and writer who lives in a town so small everybody knows where everyone else’s birthmarks are. He has performed in dozens of television and radio commercials, TV shows and is the voice of numerous cartoon characters every Saturday morning, including ‘The Ridonculous Race’, ‘Ella’ and the upcoming ‘Kody Kapow!’ His most current television and feature film roles include a guest starring appearance in ‘Rogue’, ‘Murdoch Mysteries’, ‘Remedy’, ‘The Strain’, ‘One Starry Christmas’ , and the soon to be released, ‘Bon Cop Bad Cop 2’ and Stephen Kings ‘It’. He also enjoyed six seasons playing the role of Radio Redneck Fred Tupper in CBC’s hit sit-com ‘Little Mosque on the Prairie’ and two seasons of Family Channel’s ‘Really Me’. A Second City Mainstage alumnus, Neil has been performing improvised and sketch comedy for over twenty years and is the recipient of a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Radio Comedy for his work as ‘Bad Santa’ on Q107’s Derringer in the Morning. When not performing, Neil is busy writing; as an award-winning weekly humour columnist for Metroland papers, and a contributor to numerous publications including Zoomer Magazine, Ontario Out of Doors, Dogs in Canada and ACTRA Magazine. His books; ‘Semi-Colon; A Writers cheeky journey through Colo-rectal Cancer’, “Who Farted?’ – Stories in Verse for big and little kids” and “The Farmers Secret Midnight Dance” and his first collection of syndicated columns “Enter Laughing – The Early Years” are currently available at major bookstores. Neil is a cancer survivor and is a National Spokesperson for both the Colo-rectal Cancer Association of Canada and Colon Cancer Canada. He is available as a motivational speaker, focusing on the power of laughter in healing. When Neil grows up he wants to be an Astronaut. https://www.thisischelseajohnson.com/
Actor, Jayne Eastwood joining the conversation on Cue To Cue Today!! What a blast I had with Jayne! She made me guffaw a few times during our conversation. Don’t be fooled! There are so many gems of wisdom hidden amongst the laughter and funny stories, Jayne has had a diversified career as an actor with much success and she is opening up about the ups and downs of it all and how she remains grounded through it all. In this episode: How painting has served as another creative outlet and forces her to be present and in the moment What mantra she used to help her quit smoking after 50 years and the effect it has had on her vocal range How to accept rejection as a part of the game and why it is important to feel the feelings around being rejected. How “showing up” is the key to moving forward in your career as an artist. A little about Jayne: Jayne Eastwood, actor (born in Toronto). Jayne Eastwood was raised in Toronto, where she attended Northern Secondary School. It was in Toronto that she became a member of the cast of the musical Godspell, which played at the ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE. The show ran from 1972-73 and Eastwood worked with cast members Martin SHORT, Andrea MARTIN, Gilda RADNER, and Eugene LEVY, and joined several of them in founding the Second City Theatre Troupe. Eastwood often appeared on Second City's creative offspring, SCTV, most memorably in the famous parody of GOIN' DOWN THE ROAD (her recurring line of dialogue is "I'm bummed out") with John CANDY and Joe FLAHERTY. Though Eastwood moves effortlessly from comedy to drama, comedy remains her magnetic north, drawing her to work with Women Fully Clothed, a group of performers nominated in 2005 for a CANADIAN COMEDY AWARD for best sketch troupe. From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s Eastwood appeared in stage productions of works by Michel TREMBLAY, Tom Stoppard, and Neil Simon, by such companies as Theatre in the Dell, Toronto Arts Productions, Centrestage Company, and Toronto Truck Theatre. She maintained a presence in both movies and television, working steadily in a variety of roles that began, in the 1980s, to include considerable voice work. One of her first television appearances was on the series That's Show Biz with Lorne MICHAELS and Hart and Earl Pomerantz, and she went on to become a regular on John Byner's show Bizarre from 1980 to 1985. In film, she played the president's wife in Al WAXMAN's sex comedy My Pleasure Is My Business (1975), appeared in the Robin SPRY film One Man (1977), had a small part in David CRONENBERG's Videodrome (1983) and did voice work for The Care Bears Movie (1985). She could be heard as the voice of Mrs Dingle and of Cookie and Joyce in the animated shows For Better or For Worse, and Bob and Margaret. In 1998 she won a GEMINI AWARD for best supporting actress in a drama for Dangerous Offender: the Marlene Moore Story. She played Aunt Agatha on the series Noddy and Friends, winning a 1999 Gemini Award for her work. Eastwood's film and TV appearances continued through the 1990s and into the new millennium, in works as varied as Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows (2001), Chicago (2002) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). Eastwood has had parts in everything from stage productions of Marat/Sade to TV shows such as King of Kensington, Anne of Green Gables, and Riverdale, and in radio plays like CBC's Steve the Second. She is best known for her role as Betty, the pregnant wife abandoned by Joey in the canonical English-Canadian film Goin' down the Road (1970). Many viewers will recall her as the character Ronnie Sacks in the Canadian television series This Is Wonderland or as one of the regular characters in the partly improvised Train 48. She appears as Maxine Bingley in the series Billable Hours and plays a teacher in the movie Hairspray (2007), which was shot in Toronto. She has a recurring character part in the popular series Little Mosque n the Prarie, and reprised her Goin' down the Road role in the sequel, Down the Road Again (2011). In 2014 she was a guest star on Working the Engles alongside her old friend Andrea Martin. She can be seen in the hit series Haven (2013-2014) as the recurring lead role of Gloria. More recently Jayne worked with director Kenny ORTEGA on The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Orphan Black with Tatiana MASLANY. In 1999 Jayne Eastwood received the EARLE GREY AWARD for lifetime achievement and the recipient of the 2011 DAVE BROADFOOT AWARD at the CANADIAN COMEDY AWARDS. Eastwood is a talented and reliable actor who decided early on to remain in Toronto rather than leave for the limelight of the US. Her career is curiously and satisfyingly Canadian in that she has crafted a successful working life as an ensemble player in a variety of media while remaining in her own home town. The last of our dive into religious tv we watched the Canadian show Little Mosque on the Praire. This was not a very good show but we learned a lot about Islam. They are opposed to high interest which is pretty cool. Zach contemplates the switch.
The Mayor and Anton are surprised by being UTTERLY DELIGHTED by "Santa's Slay", a goofball spook-em comedy starring a number of surprisingly famous Jewish people. Featuring lots of holiday deaths, lots of terrible puns, and the most high-stakes curling match since that one episode of Little Mosque. I though about adding a brief contextualizing note about Goldberg's recent appearance in the news, which happened after we recorded, but honestly, the news cycle being what it is, most people have probably forgotten about it already. But I did write a bit about it on the Tumblr if you want to check it out.

Centred around the cataclysmic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami Carried Away on the Crest of a Wave illustrates how world events link us all together. From two brothers in Malaysia trying to save their house from sinking, a Canadian radio-show host angered by disaster-relief efforts, a grieving Japanese father, to a lonely woman in Utah baking a pie, the play explores humanity in times of disaster. Winner of the 2015 Governor General's Literary Award for Drama and directed by Siminovitch Prize laureate Kim Collier, carried away on the crest of a wave shows that despite our differences, we are all connected through serendipity, loss and love. The stellar cast includes John Ng from CBC TV's Kim's Convenience, Zaib Shaikh, star of CBC TV's Little Mosque on the Prairie, Adrienne Wong, a frequent director at the GCTC, Kayvon Khoshkam from NAC's productions of Twelfth Night and The December Man (L'homme de décembre) and Jenny Young from the NAC's productions of Innocence Lost: A Play about Steven Truscott and The Penelopiad.
Deb McGrath, what can I say? This firecracker has had an incredible career and it just keeps getting better. From starting out at "The Second City", Toronto in 1983 where she was a writer, actress, and a director, to her work on “Little Mosque on the Prairie” and “The Ron James Show”, she truly is a queen of comedy. Deb and her husband, Colin Mochrie (another comedic genius, by the way!), are dear friends of mine so sitting down with Deb felt like old friends having a chat. But we weren’t just catching on the small things, Deb took me through her journey so far and I have to say, she’s a real inspiration!
