We had a great time talking with Lauren about music as the constant in her life, wearing every single hat as a working musician, and females with huge voices who don't hold back (likeLauren!). We also geek out over arts and crafts!    This soulful rocker, originally from Chicago, has had a passion for singing throughout her entirelife. Growing up in a household that was rich in music, her influences were widely varied from artists such as Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt, The Pointer Sisters, Eva Cassidy, Etta James, Joss Stone, Kelly Clarkson, and many more.   Despite these modern musical influences, Lauren was classically trained throughout most of her early life. She began classical piano lessons at the age of 8, was an active member of several choirs and began taking classical voice lessons when she began high school. She eventually took her love of singing to the Quad Cities and obtained a Bachelor's degree in music with an emphasis on voice at Augustana College. During her college years she spent a summer living inNovafeltria, Italy, learning the language and touring and studying opera. Initially she planned on becoming an opera singer, but quickly realized that rock and soul music were more her style.    Since moving to Nashville, Lauren has continued to tour and release new music. Her album, “Love on the Rocks” that was released in the summer of 2021 debuted at #14 on the BillboardBlues Chart, #4 on Roots Music Report & #21 on the NACC Blues Charts. Anderson has opened for bands such as Beth Hart, Ana Popovic and Mike Zito. Zito was also a featured artist on her sophomore album, on the tune "Back to Chicago". She just released her third full-length album, “Burn it all Down”, which features Albert Castiglia on the track “Zombie Blues” and JohnSalaway on “Hit The Spot.”   Check her out here:  Website: laurenandersonmusic.com  IG: laurenandersonmusic  FB: Lauren Anderson

We talk with Alice Wallace on this episode about her recent release “Here I Am,” (released June 2024) imposter syndrome, and the endless way to write a song.     Four years ago, Alice moved to Nashville after more than a decade in southern California, and Here I Am is the first of her albums to be recorded in true Music City style, backed by alineup of world-class musicians and recorded in two whirlwind days with no rehearsal. Produced by Nick Buda (Taylor Swift, Martina McBride, Dolly Parton), the album features some of the most talented musicians Music City has to offer. In addition to Nick Buda on drums, the record features GRAMMY-winning guitarist Kenny Greenberg (Willie Nelson, Wynonna Judd, Hayes Carll), bassist Ted Pecchio (Doyle Bramhall II, Susan Tedeschi), and keyboardist Jimmy Wallace (The Wallflowers).   “This is an album about reclaiming myself–as an artist, as a woman, and as a person navigating a world that is beautiful and confusing and harsh,” she says. Since releasing her last LP, her life has changed immensely - a cross-country move, a career unexpectedly halted in 2020, falling in lovemore deeply than before, and being heartbroken more painfully than she ever knew she could be. “All of those changes gave me a chance to examine myself in ways I never had. This album covers a spectrum of emotion I haven't been brave enough to share on an album before,” she continues. “This album is me.”   Check Alice out here—  Website: https://www.alicewallacemusic.com  IG: Alicewallacemusic  Facebook: Alice Wallace

Derek Trucks Teaches His Classical Indian-Inflected Solo on “Midnight in Harlem”

Break out your glass, steel, or beer bottle: This time on Shred With Shifty, we're sliding into glory with southern-rock great Derek Trucks, leader of the Derek Trucks Band, co-leader (along with wife Susan Tedeschi) of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and, from 1999 to 2014, member of the Allman Brothers Band. Reared in Jacksonville, Florida, Trucks was born into rock 'n' roll: His uncle, Butch Trucks, was a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, and from the time he was nine years old, Derek was playing and touring with blues and rock royalty, from Buddy Guy to Bob Dylan. Early on, he established himself as a prodigy on slide guitar, and in this interview from backstage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Trucks explains why he's always stuck with his trusty Gibson SGs, and how he sets them up for both slide and regular playing. (He also details his custom string gauges.) Trucks analyzes and demonstrates his subtle but scorching solo on “Midnight in Harlem,” off of Tedeschi Trucks Band's acclaimed 2011 record, Revelator. In it, he highlights the influence of Indian classical music, and particularly sarod player Ali Akbar Khan, on his own playing. The lead is “melodic but with Indian-classical inflections,” flourishes that Trucks says are integral to his playing: It's a jazz and jam-band mentality of “dangling your feet over the edge of the cliff,” says Trucks, and going outside whatever mode you're playing in. Throughout the episode, Trucks details his live and studio set ups (“As direct as I can get it”), shares advice for learning slide and why he never uses a pick, and ponders what the future holds for collaborations with Warren Haynes.   Full Video Episodes: http://volume.com/shifty   Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/id1690423642 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4B8BSR0l78qwUKJ5gOGIWb iHeart: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-shred-with-shifty-116270551/ Pandora: https://www.pandora.com/podcast/shred-with-shifty/PC:1001071314   Follow Chris Shiflett: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chrisshiflettmusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shifty71 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@chris.shiflett Twitter: https://twitter.com/chrisshiflett71 Website: http://www.chrisshiflettmusic.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5tv5SsSRqR7uLtpKZgcRrg?si=26kWS1v2RYaE4sS7KnHpag   Producer: Jason Shadrick Executive Producers: Brady Sadler and Jake Brennan for Double Elvis Engineering support by Matt Tahaney and Matt Beaudion Video Editor: Addison Sauvan Graphic Design: Megan Pralle   Special thanks to Chris Peterson, Greg Nacron, and the entire Volume.com crew.

He was co-founder of Television Production Partners, an award-winning branded entertainment company that was nominated for an Oscar, Emmy and won a Peabody Award for Hank Aaron Chasing The Dream. Rick has produced benefit concerts with Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, and Joan Jett. He executive produced the documentary My Old Friend with Paul McCartney and Carl Perkins and Rick and Perkins collaborated on several documentary concerts, benefits, and an album called Go Cat Go which included Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, John Fogerty, and Paul Simon. Recently, Rick directed and wrote the docu-concert Do Something and Vote which included performances from Bruce Springsteen, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Black Puma's, Nathaniel Rateliff and Alabama Shakes, and featured many prominent activists fighting for a safer and healthier world. The film A Father's Promise — Rick's latest documentary — tells the inspirational story of one man's journey from devastating tragedy to personal triumph. When his young son Daniel is murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a grief-stricken Mark Barden, a world class guitarist, loses all joy in the music that had defined much of his life. But, in time, Mark rewires himself to become a powerful voice for change, becoming the co-founder of Sandy Hook Promise and a tireless advocate for gun violence prevention. Mark is a father on a mission, and, with the help of his many famous music artist friends, he slowly rediscovers himself, eventually playing and performing the music that had always meant so much to him and his family. In A Father's Promise Rick takes you on Mark's powerful 10-year journey as he gradually finds his way back to music with the help of friends Sheryl Crow, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Bernie Williams, Jimmy Vivino, the Alternate Routes, and many others. Today we are joined by director Rick Korn to discuss his documentary film A FATHER'S PROMISE The film, produced by Sheryl Crow, tells the story of professional musician Mark Barden whose life changed instantly when his son Daniel was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary. After the loss of his son, Mark lost all interest in music and vowed to do everything in his power to help prevent gun violence so that no one else must go through what he and his family went through. The film follows Mark as he turned his tragedy into activism and in doing so rediscovered his lost passion for music. The documentary features performances and interviews from Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town, Darryl DMC McDaniels, Bernie Williams, and more, as well as music by John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Steve Winwood, David Shaw (The Revivalists), and others. Ultimately, this documentary was another way for Barden to connect and heal through music, as well as to honor Daniel's life and memory. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Duane Betts joins me on the show today. Duane is the son of the innovative guitarist and songwriter from the Allman Brothers Band, Dickey Betts, and while he's certainly a chip off the ol' block, Duane has his own thing going on and has finally just released his debut solo album “Wild & Precious Life”. It's an inspired and engaging record - sort of a modern take on southern rock that's unique and definitely has some of the Betts family sound but it's also a great display of a killer band in fine form. Before he was writing and singing his own songs, Duane was a guitar slinger for hire and spent some time in the band Dawes, played with Phil Lesh and Friends, Dickey's band Great Southern, and has had other bands like Backbone69 as well as a band with a few of the other Allman Bros offspring, including Berry Oakley Jr and Devon Allman - called The Allman Betts Band. After those various projects ran their course, it left Duane the time to focus on writing his own music, and after a casual conversation with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, he was offered their studio to record these new songs in. I saw Duane recently at the Grand Ol' Opry and he and his band did a killer mini-set there. They're going to be out playing all over the place in the coming months, so make sure you go and see them live and pick up the new album. We had a great conversation about all of this stuff and got deep into the process of recording his new album, guitar tones, his history with his own band and the legacy of the Allman Brothers. How To Tickle Yourself

My, oh, my, we are excited about today's guest, a remarkable musician and guitarist who is about to bless the world with an unbelievably joyful album next week. It's coming out July 14, and it's called Wild & Precious Life. The man of the moment is Duane Betts, and the album is packed with soulful melodies, intricate guitar work, and a raw, heartfelt energy that will take you to the place that great music is supposed to take you. Dare we say, it will tickle you. Son of the legendary Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts, Duane is his own force to be reckoned with in the guitar-based rock and blues scene. After cutting his teeth with the bands Backbone69 and Whitestarr, he spent a decade playing guitar alongside his father as a member of Dickey Betts and Great Southern. He then traveled the world as a touring member of Dawes. But in the last five years, he's been on a tear: He released an EP in 2018 and co-founded The Allman Betts Band, releasing two records in 2019 and 2020. And then, it was finally time for a solo album. Which brings us to Wild & Precious Life, which is being released by our friends at Royal Potato Family. A native of Sarasota, Duane says he wanted to capture “that old school Florida vibe” with this record. Well, he did that and more. Along with a powerhouse of a band - Johnny Stachela on guitar, Berry Duane Oakley on bass, John Ginty on keyboards – all three members of The Allman Betts Band, along with Tyler Greenwell on drums and special guests Marcus King, Nicki Bluhm, and Derek Trucks, Betts has gifted us with 10 scintillating tracks cut live at Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks Swamp Raga Studio in Jacksonville, Florida in 2022.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This interview from the archives goes back to 2006, and we've been itching to get this out into the world. This interview was recorded on the Derek Trucks Band tour bus prior to one of their concerts at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia. Derek's fame was just beginning to grow. Derek Trucks began playing music as a child, and by age 11 was performing for money. Even before his 20th birthday he'd already played with Buddy Guy, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh. He founded the Derek Trucks Band in 1994 which continued on for around 16 years. Derek Trucks officially joined the Allman Brothers Band in 1999, people were really starting to notice. Along with Susan Tedeschi, Derek's wife, he formed the band Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010. What the Tedeschi Trucks Band accomplished in the studio and in live performances is beyond impressive. Today we have Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks of the Tedeschi Trucks Band on the show. Derek Trucks made his name as a slide guitar prodigy with a Hall of Fame pedigree. He's the nephew of Butch Trucks, drummer of the Allman Brothers Band, who Derek toured with extensively throughout the 2000s before forming the Derek Trucks Band. Somewhere along the road, Derek met another great guitarist with a Berklee-pedigree, Susan Tedeschi, who is one of the best singers working today. Eventually the two married and merged their bands in 2010. Their latest album, I Am The Moon, is a collection of 24 songs across four different albums. On today's episode, Justin Richmond speaks with Susan and Derek about the beginnings of their band, and how their new album came to be.
