When Julia Jacobson developed chronic migraines in her 20's, with the advice of an E.R. doctor, she started treating her migraines with cannabis, and it completely changed her life. Having been freed from the cocktails of medications that never worked, she's turned her focus to the cannabis industry. Julia is the CEO and co-founder of Aster Farms, a sustainable cannabis company dedicated to organic growing and transparent practices. With her expertise in marketing, entrepreneurship and supply chain management, she has helped build a company that is creating craft cannabis the way it should be, outdoors. The truth of the matter is, very few cannabis companies actually grow their own product. In fact, many brands simply sell white labeled product from mass producers, and never tell their customers. With the help of three generations of cannabis knowledge, her company is driven to create a clean product that helps others live a healthy and active lifestyle with responsible farming methods. Today, Julia joins the podcast to share the story of how her own health challenges led her to the cannabis space, how Aster Farms is differentiating itself from many other brands emerging in this industry, and what makes cannabis supply chains so uniquely complicated. KEY TAKEAWAYS How Julia's family grew cannabis over the course of three generations and survived the many challenges along the way. How cannabis cultivation has changed over the last half-century. Why it takes so long to expand a cannabis brand across multiple states. The changing role of retail cannabis salespeople. Blunt Blowin' Mama chats with Julia Jacobson the Cofounder, and President of Aster Farms, a cannabis company that focuses on sustainability as well as cultivating high quality cannabis. Julia and her husband Sam Ludwig were inspired to start Aster Farms after spending some time with Sam's grandparents who owned and operated a successful grow for many years. They had both been spending time working and developing brands for other businesses back in New York, but wanted to flex their skills on their own initiatives. Julia has a business development & entrepreneurial background, while her husband has more of a creative and operational background. They realized they could fill a need in the industry using their talents and started to tackle building their own brand and business. Running a business in general can be complicated and requires a ton of dedication and resourcefulness, the added layer of the business being in the weed industry can leave a lot of room for mistakes to be made. Julia gives the Blunt Blowin' Mama listeners a crash course in what it takes to launch a successful cannabis business.

Today we are joined by Julia Jacobson of Aster Farms! Aster Farms is an outdoor cannabis farm located in Lake County California. Their focus is to be 0 parts per billion on any chemical or pesticides! Pretty cool, right? Julia is a Chicago original and actually started her career in fashion retail as a buyer for Bloomingdales. Realizing that she had the entrepreneurial spirit, she left Bloomingdales to begin a Tech Start-up. That company wore her out and it was finally acquired in 2016. Now Julia was free to do whatever she wanted and she turned to soil. After hours and hours of searching and learning she decided that Cannabis was what she would do now. And just like that, Aster Farms was born. Julia and her business partner and husband, Sam, focus on giving back what they take from the earth. Using no chemicals or pesticides, they believe that the best and only way to farm cannabis is the sustainable way. The Mendocino Complex Fire erupted right around the corner from Aster Farms just about a year ago. During this fire Aster Farms was evacuated and lost a heavy majority of their crop. During this crisis they felt an outreach of love and support from their local community. Because of that support, they are back up and running today. As a gift to their local community they are giving back to local firefighters with their harvest called Harry's Harvest in honor of a farm cat that they were not able to find after the fire was put out.
