Betty
It's Thursday, and that means it's time to catch up on the week in politics with Stephanie Grace, editorial director and a columnist for the Times Picayune/The Advocate. Today we discuss what's on the ballot for the Dec. 7 elections. Many of us look for things to do the morning of Thanksgiving, especially if there's a huge meal in the offing. Besides shopping, have you considered Human Horse Racing? It's entering its 5th year in New Orleans. Founder and producer of Human Horse Racing, Ingrid Anderson, tells us more about the races, raffles and costume contests on Thanksgiving Day. A new historical marker has gone up in New Orleans' Central City neighborhood to commemorate the life of Dorothy Mae Taylor. The civil rights icon and politician was the first Black woman elected to the state legislature and is remembered for working to desegregate the city's Mardi Gras krewes. Verite's Arielle Robinson tells us more about the historical marker unveiling and Parker's life story.Stuffing. Turkey. Gravy. Cranberry Sauce. Those are the ingredients of a classic Thanksgiving dinner. But have you tried them in a Po-boy? Producer Matt Bloom visited one restaurant owner in New Orleans who has perfected the art of mixing the two traditions every holiday season. —Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich. The November elections are less than two months away, and Verite News in New Orleans recently launched “Civics 504,” a guide on voter registration, ballot propositions and news coverage. The guide was launched in partnership with Verite's sister newsroom, Mississippi Today. Verite's Managing Editor Charles Maldonado joins us now for more on this guide and the information it offers. The LSU Museum of Art is currently working on an oral history project on Clementine Hunter. Born in 1887, Hunter was a self-taught Black folk artist, who lived and worked on Melrose Plantation and depicted early 20th century plantation life in her work. Before her death in 1988 at the age of 101, Hunter became the first artist to have a solo show at the New Orleans Museum of Art. LSU Museum of Art educator and public programs manager Callie Smith, and LSU graduate student and interviewer Sarah Nansubuga, tell us how they used conversations with Hunter's family to capture her story. New Orleans has long been famous for its culinary traditions that combine traditional southern cuisine with broader cultural influence. Now, a new podcast is celebrating the global reach of New Orleans food. Zella Palmer, local food historian and director and chair of the Dillard University Ray Charles Program in African American Material Culture speaks with chefs, farmers, activists and culture bearers as host of “Culture & Flavor.” She joins us for more on her conversations and how you can listen. ___Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. The Central Wetlands Reforestation Collective recently launched an initiative to plant 63,000 thousand trees in Orleans and St. Bernard Parishes. This is part of larger efforts to restore the bayou ecosystems that have been impacted by coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion and hurricanes. In October, we reported on the early stages of this project. Today, we check back in with Verite's Lue Palmer who recently attended a day of volunteer tree planting. Last month, we brought you the story of Theatre Baton Rouge, which was in danger of closing in its 78th season due to rising production costs and budget mismanagement. Since then, board members, volunteers and the theater's one full-time employee have come together to save the beloved institution — and have already broken their initial fundraising goal. Theatre Baton Rouge Board treasurer Pete Rizzo tells us how he helped balance the budget and volunteer costumer and Central High student Sammie Vaughan discusses her experience as a volunteer costumer. A professional trumpet player and New Orleans native is sharing his passion for the instrument with a new project, Girls Play Trumpets Too. His goal is to introduce young women to the trumpet and increase representation in a male-dominated field of the music industry. Founder Troy Sawyer joins us for more on the inspiration behind his new organization and what he hopes to accomplish. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson.
If you live in Louisiana, you're likely aware that a saltwater wedge is slowly seeping into the Mississippi River – and threatening the drinking water supply of several communities in the far southeastern corner of the state. But it's not just residents who face concerns: Saltwater can also adversely affect the state's plants, trees and wildlife. Heather Kirk-Ballard, assistant professor in Louisiana State University's School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Sciences, joins us to explain the impact. Last Spring, New Orleans' Verite News published “In the Dark,” a five-part investigative series that looked into misconduct, complaints and community mistrust of the Baton Rouge Police Department's internal affairs division. But the news hasn't stopped since their initial report. Over the summer, BRPD police chief Murphy Paul announced his resignation. And news of the department's now-infamous unmonitored interrogation facility, known internally as the “Brave Cave,” has also come to light. Verite reporters Clarissa Sosin and Daryl Khan join us with updates from their latest reporting. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 5.8 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer's and related diseases – but awareness around the disease still isn't universal. Delores Hurst, executive director of the Louisiana chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, and Tatiana Gonzalez Quiroga, the chapter's director of public policy, join us for more on how their organization is working to spread awareness about the condition among Louisiana's Latino communities. Louisiana has roughly 29,000 producing oil and gas wells around the state, according to the Department of Natural Resources. But what happens to those wells when they stop producing? Or when a company goes bankrupt and owners just walk away? In Louisiana, there are over 16,000 inactive wells and 4,600 are considered “orphaned,” meaning they have been abandoned or turned over to the state. These wells could be leaking methane — a dangerous greenhouse gas. A new $3 million grant from the Department of Natural Resources is helping researchers at Louisiana State University find these wells, estimate the costs to plug them and measure their flow of methane. Three members of LSU's research team discuss their efforts — Ipsita Gupta, associate professor of petroleum engineering, Kanchan Maiti, chair of the school's oceanography and coastal sciences department, and Greg Upton, associate professor of research at LSU's Center for Energy Studies. After 12 years of collaboration, two of New Orleans premiere arts organizations ended their partnership last month. The relationship between New Orleans Museum of Art and the NOLA Project theatre group came to an abrupt halt over the production of a play. But there are two sides to the story. Verite reporter Josie Abugov explains how intense conversations on racial reckoning may have led the groups to splinter. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich. News broke last week of an unmonitored interrogation facility at a Baton Rouge Police warehouse, dubbed “the Brave Cave.” One officer resigned shortly after the news broke and others have been reassigned. Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome announced Thursday that the Baton Rouge Police Department's street crimes unit had been disbanded. She joins us today to discuss how the “Brave Cave” happened, what's being done to address it, and how the scandal might impact Baton Rouge's search for its next police chief. Elected sheriffs are often the most powerful figures in local law enforcement in most Louisiana parishes. And in a state whose population is more than 30% Black, they're nearly all white men. Only four of Louisiana's 64 sheriffs are Black, and only one is a woman. But voters will soon have the opportunity to change that. In 16 parishes, 24 candidates for sheriff are women or people of color. Verite's Bobbi-Jeanne Misick has been reporting on these candidates and she joins us today to tell us more about them. High school football season began two weeks ago, but the scorching temperatures caused some schools to delay kickoff times. The Gulf States Newsroom's Joseph King went to a game and talked to parents and players braving the heat under the Friday night lights. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. Last year, the state of Louisiana moved dozens of incarcerated children to an old death row facility at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, the largest maximum security prison in the country. Advocates say the kids — mostly Black youth — are suffering from isolation and extreme heat. And at a recent hearing in Baton Rouge, civil rights lawyers asked a federal judge to take emergency action to remove them from the facility. Bobbi-Jeane Misick, a reporter for Verite, has been following the situation, and sat down with the Gulf States Newsroom's Drew Hawkins to discuss the hearing. As efforts continue to remove teenagers from Angola, a new study shows minors incarcerated in adult correctional facilities have an increased risk of early death between the ages of 18-39. Joseph Nedelec co-authored the study and is a professor at the University of Cincinnati. He joins us to discuss his research and what it reveals about the psychological health of youth held in adult detention. But first, it's Thursday, which means it's time to catch up on this week in politics with The Times-Picayune | The Advocate's editorial director and columnist, Stephanie Grace. Today we hear what new polling reveals about voters' opinions on the upcoming governor's election. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich. At the end of July, journalists in Louisiana and Mississippi formed a union with the National Association of the Employees and Technicians – Communications Workers of America (NABET-CWA). Reporters from two nonprofit newsrooms, Verite in New Orleans, and Mississippi Today in Ridgeland, just north of Jackson, are now united in the Deep South Today Union. They've become the first two newsrooms in their respective states to successfully unionize. For more on this historic union and what members hope to accomplish, we are joined by reporter for Mississippi Today, Molly Minta, and reporter for Verite, Michael Stein. Starting today, Louisiana students are heading back to school, and they'll be coming back to classrooms changed by the last legislative session. Among the changes are the end of corporal punishment without parent permission and a new requirement that the words “In God We Trust” be displayed in every classroom. Education reporter Aubri Juhasz joins us for more on how these new bills will impact Louisiana classrooms. But first, the cost of tap water can change dramatically from state to state and city to city. In the latest installment of ‘Utility Bill of the Month,' the Gulf States Newsroom's Stephan Bisaha shares the story of one Alabama family who ended up paying nearly three times as much after moving just a few miles. A new New Orleans law that seeks to protect tenants from landlord retaliation went into effect earlier this month. The Healthy Homes Ordinance makes it harder for landlords to retaliate against renters who ask for repairs or report problems covered by the City's housing health and safety rules. Josie Abugov reported this story for the nonprofit news site Verite, and she joins us now for a look at the law's effectiveness over the last month. For years, Louisiana's medical marijuana market has been stagnant. The state has some of the most restrictive policies in the nation. But a recent study projected skyrocketing legal cannabis sales in Louisiana in the coming years. To meet this growing demand, Louisiana State University is now offering four online medical cannabis education programs in partnership with Green Flower, a leader in legal marijuana education. Max Simon, CEO of Green Flower, joins us for more on these programs and the growth of cannabis education nationwide. But first, last week the LSU Tigers made history when two of their championship-winning baseball players, Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews, were the first picks of the MLB draft. This was the first time that one school has produced the top two picks in any MLB draft. And they weren't even the last Tigers to get the call up. Later, they were joined by 11 other teammates. To learn more about this history-making draft, Louisiana Considered's Managing Producer Alana Schreiber spoke with The Advocate's LSU baseball and football reporter, Leah Vann. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our digital editor is Katelyn Umholtz. On today's Louisiana Considered, we get an update on a series of attempts to amend Louisiana's near-total abortion ban. Also, we hear from two investigative journalists who examined the Internal Affairs Division at the Baton Rouge Police Department and cataloged misconduct, complaints, and community mistrust of law enforcement. Finally, we learn about a group of musicians bringing live performances to area homeless shelters. Public Health Reporter Rosemary Westwood details a series of attempts in the state legislature to amend Louisiana's near-total abortion ban. Those proposals have all failed during this year's legislative session. Yesterday, Republicans in the House Criminal Justice Committee defeated two bills aimed at clarifying pregnancy care under the ban. Republicansalso defeated rape and incest exceptions last week. Investigative journalists Clarissa Sosin and Daryl Khan dug into complaints of misconduct, complaints, and mistrust of law enforcement in Baton Rouge. Their five-part investigative project, “In the Dark,” was published by the Verite newsroom in New Orleans. Sosin and Khan outline how reporting on the Alton Sterling killing motivated them to look into Internal Affairs as an avenue to get a picture of the trust the Baton Rouge community places in its police. They tell us about their conversations with people who filed against police and we hear how BRPD has reformed since they began reporting. Also, we speak with trumpeter and music educator Jena Vangel, who is leading efforts to bring live music performances and youth music lessons to Baton Rouge homeless shelters. She leads Community of Note, a group dedicated to putting musicians from a variety of musical styles in front of Baton Rouge's unhoused residents. Vangel tells us how she believes music helps address a basic human need. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. Last week, college basketball player from Detroit Mercy, Antoine Davis, came four points away from beating Pete Maravich's record for most points scored in the NCAA. While we wait to see whether or not Davis might have another chance to take this title, we revisit a conversation with Marshall Terrill, co-author of the biography Maravich, about the life of LSU legend pistol Pete and how he changed Louisiana basketball history. State law requires law enforcement agencies to report when an officer quits or is fired and why. But a new police accountability database found the reporting isn't happening in a majority of cases. Investigative reporter for Verite, Richard Webster, looked into what's been happening. He joins us for more on what he's discovered. This Thursday, Louisiana Public Broadcasting will premiere the film, The Precipice. Law enforcement officers from outside of the New Orleans area will head to the Crescent City to help with policing and security during Mardi Gras. But in the past, outside officers have not always had to follow the city's rules and regulations. Verite's Richard Webster tells us more about the consent decree that will give the NOPD oversight of the incoming officers. Last month, the YMCA in Baton Rouge's mid-city announced plans to renovate its aging facility and replace it, in part, with affordable apartments. These new units are meant to help address housing needs in the region. Christian Engle, CEO of YMCA of the Capital Region tells us more. Next week, The Acadiana Symphony Orchestra in Lafayette will present a concert of romantic musical masterpieces, featuring the sultry sounds of the saxophone for its Valentines Day concert. Mariusz Smolij, artistic director of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, and Karèn Devroop, saxophonist, join us for more. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. Olivier Assayas wrote and directed "Irma Vep" that portrays the state of French cinema at the time by placing the audience in the middle of making a film. A film about a film like how Assayas did is very invasive in an artful way. I briefly explain this method in this episode. I really enjoyed the film, it's nice to see people break down in normal situations, it's nice to see how people coexist despite their upbringings. It's not said but it's displayed and I think it adds progressive tendencies as to why we do the things we do.#irmavep #maggiecheung #morningreel
Singer and songwriter, VÉRITÉ (Kelsey Byrne), and artist manager, Vanessa Magos have been leading the charge for artists and their teams to learn about and experiment in web3. In our third episode in the web3 music mini-series, they joined us to talk about: Artists as CEOs who bootstrap their business and put themselves in positions of power and ownership Artists being locked into the arbitrary fixed price imposed on music by the industry A future where artists have access to their fans free of paywalls, algorithms, and third parties The role music DAOs can play in restructuring artist teams You can find VERITE and Vanessa on Twitter @verite and @vanessamagos, respectively.
