On this episode of the Sumúd podcast we uplift, empower and amplify Palestinian American and Muslim, Bahia Amawi. You may remember her as a courageous Texas elementary school speech language pathologist, fired from her job because she refused to sign the anti-boycott, divestment, and sanctions law, which asked her to take an oath of solidarity with Israel. On this episode Bahia shares her personal experience about the ordeal and how with the help of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), she was able to sue the state of Texas and win! Watch Bahia's story on the movie referenced in this episode "Boycott" linked here; https://justvision.org/boycott/watch. Why would United States Senators sign into law, a bill that combats the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction (BDS) movement this past May 2023? Probably because BDS works. What is it and why does it matter so much to our lawmakers and to all Americans? While we find out, let's ask ourselves, “Why do we consider Rosa Parks a momshero?”States led the way in passing anti BDS laws, and have been doing so for years. Returning to the podcast is Bahia Amawi, a mom who was scheduled WAY BEFORE October to speak with us. This episode was recorded just after October 7th and since then, the world is witnessing what's happened.Bahia Amawi lost her job overnight when she refused to sign an employment contract with a school district that stipulated she would maintain an anti BDS stance. As a Palestinian and mom, she fought the state and came to us at that time when the ruling was pending. Find out what happened and where you can catch her right now on the screen.Tune in at 6pm EST where you listen to podcasts (we aren't on Spotify!) or head to our website and you can hear her there. The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement is a Palestinian-led movement for freedom, justice and equality inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement. Since its formal launch in 2005, the BDS movement has had a major impact on ending international support for Israeli apartheid, with companies now divesting from or not investing in Israel including companies like Ben and Jerry's. Owing to the strength of the BDS movement in the US and in Palestine, Israel has sought to break it. To date, 33 US States have passed anti-BDS laws - laws that aim to stop individuals and companies from securing contracts if they support the BDS movement. It is in this light that the Just Vision film, titled Boycott, is made. Boycott follows the attempts to challenge these anti-BDS laws in a number of US States including Texas, Arkansas and Arizona. Today we speak with the films director Julia Bacha and Bahia Amawi.
In this episode of "Occupied Thoughts," Peter Beinart interviews Bahia Amawi and Gadeir Abbas about the fight for the right to boycott Israel in Texas. Bahia is a speech pathologist in Texas who sued the state after losing her school contract because she refused to sign an agreement promising not to boycott Israel. Bahia won her case - and in response, the Texas government amended their anti-BDS bill so that it only applies to larger companies. A few weeks ago, CAIR - the Council on American Islamic Relations - filed a lawsuit challenging the new amended Texas law. Gadeir Abbas is Senior Litigation Attorney at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Bahia Amawi is a Palestinian-American and a speech pathologist in Texas. Peter Beinart is Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He is also a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York, a Contributing opinion writer at the New York Times, an Editor-at-Large at Jewish Currents, and a CNN Political Commentator. NEWS School Contractor in Texas Denied Work Over Pro-Israel Loyalty Oath We've previously talked about these bizarre attempts to pass laws that would criminalize or at least punish people for boycotting Israel, we'll, now we have a story where it's not abstract. Bahia Amawi is a speech pathologist who has worked on a contract basis for a school district in Austin, TX serving children from the area's growing Arabic speaking community since 2008. Then in August the district sent her the standard contract renewal, except there was something different this time. It included a pledge that she is not current boycotting Israel and will not do anything “that is intended to penalize, inflict economic harm on, or limit commercial relations with Israel, or with a person or entity doing business in Israeli or in an Israel-controlled territory.” Lindsey Graham claims Trump's wall is defense against Islamic terrorism By now you should all be aware that several departments of the US government are shut down, in some cases this means people aren't working, like at the National Parks, and in others it means they have to keep working with no idea when they'll get paid as in the case of Dan Ellis of The Godless Rebolution Podcast. The reason for the shutdown is the Senate rejected the House passed bill that would have funded these departments as well as funded Trump's border wall and repealed the Johnson Amendment. Trump is doubling down saying that he won't sign a spending bill that doesn't fund the wall and Senator Lindsey Graham is backing this up claiming that the wall is needed as a our “last line of defense” against Islamic terrorism. W.Va. mom says her daughter was bullied after they balked at Bible classes in public school In first grade Jessica Roe and another girl was sent to a coat closet with another girl and some iPads when her teacher discovered she didn't have the permission slip required to take part in the pastor lead “Bible in the Schools” class. By third grade the bullying over this separation got bad enough that classmates were telling her she was going to hell and slapping Harry Potter books out of her hands. That's when her mom transferred her to another school and filed a lawsuit in federal court. In response to the lawsuit the school suspended the program and the judge dismissed the case since the child was no longer enrolled in the school and the program was not being actively run. A three judge panel of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously decided that the cases dismissal was in error, so the case challenging the constitutionality of Bible in the Schools programs will go on. A Catholic Hospital in Iowa Won't Perform Vasectomies or Tubal Ligations Anymore Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-Iowa a part of Mercy Health, announced at the end of the day on Friday December 14 that they would no longer be allowing vasectomies or tubal ligations to be performed in the hospital. In this revealing, 3 minute interview with Bahia Amawi by the Intercept, she explains why the state of Texas would not renew her contract as a speech therapist in the Austin, Texas school district because she would not sign the "Israeli Loyalty Oath" clause of a 2017 billed passed in Texas. Twenty five other states have passed similar legislation. The Intercept "asked if she considered signing the pledge to preserve her ability to work. Bahia Amawi told The Intercept: “Absolutely not. I couldn’t in good conscience do that. If I did, I would not only be betraying Palestinians suffering under an occupation that I believe is unjust and thus, become complicit in their repression, but I’d also be betraying my fellow Americans by enabling violations of our constitutional rights to free speech and to protest peacefully.” For more details on this, please read the Intercept story "A Texas Elementary School Speech Pathologist Refused to Sign a Pro-Israel Oath, Now Mandatory in Many States — so She Lost Her Job." Also, watch the report by Rick Sanchez of RT News, "Will Americans Have to Take a Loyalty Oath to Israel Instead of U.S.?"
Rick Sanchez of RT America reports on a phenomena sweeping the nation that makes a mockery of the First Amendment to the US Constitution, that protects the right to free speech. Laws have been enacted by 26 states in America deeming that any person doing work for that state must take a loyalty oath that they currently are not boycotting Israel, or will not in the future. This 4 minute report needs to be watched by anyone valuing the right to freedom of speech. More details about Bahia Amawi, who would not sign the Texas loyalty oath to Israel can be found in the Intercept article, "A Texas Elementary School Speech Pathologist Refused to Sign a Pro-Israel Oath, Now Mandatory in Many States — so She Lost Her Job." Also, there is a bill being proposed in Congress that would make the "Israel Loyalty Oath" the law of the land (see: "Senators Working to Slip Israel Anti-Boycott Law Through in Lame Duck").
Jess and Jamal discuss the State of Texas, McCarthyite loyalty oath requiring contractors not to boycott Israel. Pursuant to Section 2270.001 of Texas Government Code, contractors are barred from "refusing to deal with, terminating business activities with, or otherwise taking any action that is intended to penalize, inflict economic harm on, or limit commercial relations specifically with Israel." The law is a violation of the First Amendment and is being challenged by Bahia Amawi, a Texas speech pathologist, who lost her job due to this law.
