A fresh settler attack on a mosque in the occupied West Bank has drawn sharp international condemnation and intensified scrutiny of Israel's handling of rising violence in the territory. The arson and vandalism at Deir Istiya, which left Korans burned and hate-filled graffiti on the walls, comes amid warnings from the United Nations that such assaults risk fuelling a wider regional crisis.

Last Friday, two men appeared before Portlaoise District Court as part of a Garda investigation into an alleged terrorist plot by an extreme right wing group to attack Galway Mosque. The two men were arrested on Co Laois on Tuesday during a cross-Border antiterrorism operation and were charged with possession of explosives.A video found by gardaí on one of the men's phones revealed a ‘practice' recording of what the extreme right wing group intended to release after its planned attack on Galway mosque.A major inquiry is now under way to determine how long the alleged plot was in the planning, what role others may have played and to identify all four men who appear in the video. Irish Times crime and security editor Conor Lally has the latest details. Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Produced by Suzanne Brennan. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

//The Wire//2300Z November 7, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: POTENTIAL CHEMICAL/BIOLOGICAL WEAPON MAILED TO JOINT BASE ANDREWS, 7X BASE PERSONNEL HOSPITALIZED BRIEFLY. SCHOOL SHOOTING IN INDONESIA HIGHLGHTS GROWING CONCERNS OF INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM ORGANIZATIONS. WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCES FURTHER COOLING OF THE TRADE WAR WITH CHINA AS ECONOMIC DEALS CONTINUE TO BE STRUCK.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Indonesia: A school shooting was reported at a high school in Jakarta. A student at the school conducted a complex attack by detonating explosives inside the school's Mosque, before conducting a small arms attack on his fellow students at the school. 54x students were wounded in some manner during the attack, though most casualty figures are unclear at this time.Analyst Comment: This attack is interesting as it highlights a relatively new type of terror threat that has cropped up over the years, which is useful to have an understanding of. This type of attacker is now being described with rather niche terminology: Nihilistic Violent Extremism (NVE). This label (and a few other similar labels) have become a popular way to describe these types of attacks in the counterterrorism community, which have gone from nearly non-existent to comparatively common over the past few years.Caribbean: This afternoon the Pentagon announced another kinetic targeting strike in the region, so far the tenth strike during this campaign. Three individuals were killed during this engagement.-HomeFront-Washington D.C. - This morning the White House announced another stage in the cooling of the trade war with China, which involves both parties backing down from their hardline tariffs and export controls. China will halt some (not all) of the export controls on minerals the US needs, and the US will halt some of the retaliatory tariffs in exchange.Analyst Comment: This has happened before; the trade conflict between the US and China has ebbed and flowed since January. However, as both parties have mutual interest and aren't ready for a more kinetic conflict right now, both seem to be interested in striking a deal. Though, who comes on top of this arrangement will be a point for debate in due time.Maryland - This morning 7x people were hospitalized after opening a package filled with white powder at one of the National Guard facilities on Joint Base Andrews. The building where the discovery was made was evacuated, and several employees were briefly examined to determine if they were exposed to any chemical/biological agent. The base itself was also locked down for a short time while the situation was investigated.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Initial reports this morning suggested that political messages were also found in the package with the powder discovered at JB Andrews (as is extremely common), but no word yet on what any of those documents said. Regarding the medical situation, it is standard procedure for all parties involved with a suspicious package to immediately be hospitalized to determine if they have been exposed to anything. However, several news media outlets specifically stated that several people actually "fell ill" as the package was opened. All were released very quickly from the hospital, so whatever the substance was it wasn't a genuine threat. Since it is sometimes quite traumatic to experience a potential biological/chemical terror attack, it's very common for those in the room to have an emotional reaction that can be mistaken as some kind of reaction to a biological agent. In this case, everyone turned out to be fine, so this looks to be a hoax. Most of the time these incidents are indeed hoaxes, but it only takes one genuine threat for a major incident to occur. Better safe than sorry, and now that the domestic terrorism threats presented by thousands of ideologies and cultures ar

Wednesday morning, security guards at Temple Israel in Minneapolis discovered the synagogue had been vandalized with what synagogue leaders are calling antisemitic rhetoric. The vandalism at Temple Israel comes on the heels of a break-in at Alhikmah Islamic Center in Minneapolis on Monday. A few days prior, there was a fire at the same mosque. Police are investigating whether the two mosque incidents are connected. For more, MPR News host Nina Moini talked with Temple Israel Senior Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman and Jaylani Hussein, executive director of Minnesota's Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

What were the first words you said to your child when you became a parent? Was there something you needed to say to officially welcome him or her into this world, or was it all just a blur? For longtime Slate journalist and author Aymann Ismail the task was clear: He had to recite a Muslim call to prayer into his newborn son's right ear, a ritual that's been performed by countless Muslim fathers through the generations, all over the world. But was he appeasing God, or his own father? On this episode of Paternal, Ismail discusses a life spent navigating being a Muslim kid who preferred cartoons over daily prayers, and then how his faith influences his role as a father to two young kids now. And all the while he's been trying to somehow live up to the expectations of his father, a devout and educated Muslim man fixated on the kind of man he believes his son should be. Ismail's new book, Becoming Baba: Fatherhood, Faith and Finding Meaning in America, is available now wherever you buy books.

Ian Johnson's new book, The Souls of China: The Return of Religion After Mao (Pantheon, 2017), was called "a masterpiece of observation and empathy" by The New York Review of Books, and The Economist, who included the book on its Best of 2017 list, said the book, "Shows how a resurgence of faith is quietly changing the country." The Guardian said the book is "full of moving encounters with Chinese citizens ... Johnson succeeds in having produced a nuanced group portrait of Chinese citizens striving for non-material answers in an era of frenetic materialism." I just finished the book myself and was stunning in its portrayals. If you hope to understand the trajectory of modern China, arguably the fastest-rising international superpower, understanding the religious Taoist, Christianity, folk religion, and Islam of China will be helpful, if not essential. The raging waters of Rio Claro, in Colombia reminded recently of of the Amazon River. And currently, the river of life itself, which is as wild and unpredictable as the Amazon, has shown us, in the state of Texas which I call home, that the power of flowing water is as brutal as it is life-sustaining and necessary. Then, as promised, I take you back to Casablanca, in Morocco, and share the magnificence of the Hassan II Mosque. One of its most prevalent ornaments, Muqarnas, remind me of Victorias Amazonicas. Both images celebrate the symmetries and repetitive structures in nature, evoking the sacred mathematics so representative of Islamic art and architecture. Yet, even the majestic Hassan II Mosque has been affected by the passage of time and the elements. Water, the memory of the dead fawn and the roar of nature's power aim to remind us all that everything in existence is a container and then a contributor to the all encompassing web of life.
Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast I am delighted to welcome back a special guest, my cohost Cheryl. As some of you know we are largely in the bucket list checking stage of our lives and just got the opportunity to check one off. I will warn my listeners from the cruise community that this episode is about a land trip—don't want to be accused of inviting you here under false pretenses. Yes, we cover cruising 99% of the time but this was a rare land trip to a place that was on the bucket list to visit whether by land or sea—Dubai. You likely have heard me point out that while I live and breathe cruising, Cheryl appreciates the occasional land trip, so we have a couple planned this year. In addition to Dubai, we are going back to Vegas for the umpteenth time but this a little bit of bucket list checking because we want to see the Sphere, the $2.3 billion state of the art music and entertainment arena characterized by the venue's exterior featuring 580k sq ft of led displays. We experienced Dubai, one of the 6 emirates of the United Arab Emirates along with a 2nd Emirate, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the Emirates about a 45 minute drive from Dubai. Our itinerary was called Dubai & Abu Dhabi: Beauty Among the Dunes, an 8-day, 6 night journey booked via The Joy Of Vacation by Dream Vacations. Our package included air from Charlotte, accommodations, all breakfasts, 2 dinners, 4 guided tours and excursions, entrance fees to certain venues like the largest Mosque in the UAE, and the Kings Palace, and transfers and transportation. For that we paid $4300. As we'll discuss, this amount did increase unexpectantly before we ever left home, so the total price turned out to be $5000.Do you have a dream car?Support the showSupport thejoyofcruisingpodcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/supporters/newSupport Me https://www.buymeacoffee.com/drpaulthContact Me https://www.thejoyofcruising.net/contact-me.htmlBook Cruises http://www.thejoyofvacation.com/US Orders (coupon code joyofcruisingpodcast)The Joy of Cruising https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingCruising Interrupted https://bit.ly/CruisingInterruptedThe Joy of Cruising Again https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingAgainIntl Orders via Amazon
//The Wire//2300Z May 27, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: UKRAINE WAR RHETORIC INTENSIFIES. STATEMENTS CONTINUE FOLLOWING WEEKEND RIOT IN SEATTLE. DETAILS EMERGE REGARDING LAST WEEK'S VANDALISM IN TEXAS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Europe: Rhetoric concerning the war in Ukraine continues to escalate, as both President Trump and the Kremlin trade insults and less-than-friendly messaging. In response to the latest Russian drone strikes in Ukraine, President Trump stated that Putin was "playing with fire" regarding these developments. In response to this, former Russian Prime Minister (and current Deputy Chair of Russia's Security Council) Dmitry Medvedev stated that the "bad thing" that President Trump alluded to is WW3.AC: This is a classic Medvedev statement; invoking threats of WW3 is a fairly standard Tuesday for Dima, as Medvedev (echoing his former role as Prime Minister) often serves as the more informal conveyor of what Putin is thinking. To the casual observer it may not seem like it, but the situation is not openly hostile yet. However, the diplomacy being conducted between the United States and Russia is heating up nonetheless.-HomeFront-Pennsylvania: Overnight, a small arms engagement was reported at Lemon Hill Park in Philadelphia. 2x were killed, and 9x others were wounded. 1x person was also struck by a vehicle during the fray caused by the shooting. Local authorities state that three separate shooters have been counted as partaking in the incident, based on the shell casings found at the scene.AC: Very few details have been released regarding the cause of the shooting, or why a large group of people was gathered in this park late at night. At first glance this appears to be a gang shooting and/or the result of a domestic dispute, though more details are needed.Texas: More details have come to light following acts of vandalism that were reported throughout Austin last week. Three separate facilities were defaced with graffiti on May 21st, and yesterday it became known that all three facilities were linked to various Islamic institutions in the area. One was a Mosque and the other two sites were cultural centers. A vigil has been scheduled for May 29th in response to the acts of vandalism, and the Austin Police Department has announced a rigorous increase in patrols, along with undercover operations to prevent further vandalism.Washington: A small riot broke out over the weekend in Seattle as a concert and prayer vigil was held in Cal Anderson Park. The event, which largely involved various performances by Christian musical groups and various prayer vigils, was hosted by Pursuit Northwest, a local Christian organization. The event (which was permitted and approved by the government), became host to violence as ANTIFA activists arrived and began assaulting the police officers guarding the perimeter of the event. 27x rioters were arrested for assaulting police at the event. None of the event participants were arrested; 100% of the violence took place between ANTIFA activists and police. However, all of the rioters who assaulted police were immediately released by a local judge on Monday.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Though it may be surprising to some, the events over the weekend in Seattle are not out of the ordinary, and merely reflect the regional norm when it comes to those who practice the Christian faith in the region. Any type of display of Christianity in Seattle is usually met with violence, so the outcome being violence conducted on those attending the event was to be expected. In this case, extreme violence was very much going to be the result from the very start...holding a prayer vigil in a park named after the first openly gay Congressman in Washington was very much going to result in a kinetic response by locals. However, one important detail that ha

In Bangladesh, hijras - once a revered community - have long lived on the margins. Also known as the third gender, hijras form a diverse group, including those born intersex - meaning their physical traits don't fit neatly into ‘male' or ‘female' categories - and transgender individuals. Traditionally seen as spiritual figures with the power to bless or curse, they are now outcasts, denied homes, jobs, and opportunities. But in a quiet village in Mymensingh, a spiritual revolution is taking place.Reporter Sahar Zand has gained rare access to this community, spending time with its leader, Tanu - a transgender woman and practising Muslim - who has built a sanctuary where hijras can reconnect with faith. At the heart of this transformation is a Quran study group, offering hijras the religious education they were long denied, and a newly built mosque - the first in Bangladesh to welcome them as equals, after they were expelled from others. With the help of an imam who risked everything to stand by them, they are reclaiming their right to Islam. But as religious conservatism rises, so do the threats against them. Their village is no longer just a refuge; it is the frontline of a battle for acceptance. Can faith be the key to breaking barriers, or will they be forced back into the shadows?
