Contributing writer Jake Fogleman and I discuss a long-awaited ruling out of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, which tossed a lawsuit brought by gun-rights activists against New Jersey's ban on sharing digital gun designs. We also cover a major settlement against a gun accessory maker that gun-control advocates blamed, at least in part, for the Tops grocery store shooting in Buffalo, New York. In this episode of Church Is Messy, Rick and Svea dive into Paul's letter to the Corinthians, exploring how the early church struggled with the same tribal divisions we see today. Using a clever Jelly Roll analogy, Rick illustrates how easily Christians can align themselves with personalities and influencers rather than keeping Jesus as their foundation. The conversation tackles the tension between theological knowledge and spiritual maturity, the danger of evaluating Jesus through the lens of our preferred tribe rather than the other way around, and what it means to truly be the temple of God. Rick and Svea discuss the importance of knowing not just what we believe, but why we believe it, and how immaturity and pride can lead us to seek certainty in the wrong places.Throughout the episode, they emphasize that while we're called to contribute to God's work, it's ultimately His presence and power that produces growth—not our performance. The discussion offers both challenge and comfort: we're all vulnerable to these patterns, but we have a solid foundation in Christ that can't be shaken.Topics discussed in this episode:00:00 Intro02:10 Jelly Roll Parable and Church Polarization04:45 Teaching How to Think, Not What to Think06:30 Historical Perspective on Division10:00 Evaluating Jesus Through Our Tribe14:45 Theologically Rich but Spiritually Poor19:30 Immaturity and the Craving for Certainty23:00 Building on the Foundation of Christ26:00 Contributing vs. Producing28:15 We Are the Temple32:20 What a Healthy Church Looks Like37:00 Closing & Preview of Next Week
In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with Myssana Morany, a lawyer and coordinator of the Land and Planning Rights Unit of Adalah, the legal center for Arab minority rights in Israel, and Sarit Michaeli, the International Advocacy Director at the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem. They discuss forcible transfer and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and the Naqab/Negev, looking at shared patterns of policy and action that supports Jewish control over land, enacting and entrenching the regime of Jewish supremacy from the Jordan river to the Mediterranean sea. They look at specific mechanisms of displacement and dispossession of Palestinian communities, particularly rural herding and farming communities, and the dozens of communities - including tens of thousands of Palestinians - made homeless or vulnerable by this regime. Patterns include: increased home demolitions, segregationist urban planning processes, the refusal of the Supreme Court to protect or defend Palestinian land rights, and the increase in political support for crowding Palestinians into urban areas or removing them from their land altogether. Additionally, the last two-plus years has seen a massive acceleration of settler violence and terror against Palestinian communities in the West Bank, which is backed by every arm of the Israeli state. Speakers: Myssana Morany joined Adalah as a lawyer in 2014. In 2019, she was appointed coordinator of the Land and Planning Rights Unit. Myssana's work in the Naqab includes representing several Bedouin communities facing displacement and challenging state intiatives and master plans that induce displacement. Sarit Michaeli is International Advocacy Director at B'Tselem. She joined B'Tselem in 2004 as its media spokesperson and director of public outreach. Sarit has an MA (Distinction) in Gender Studies from Birkbeck College, University of London, and a BA in graphic design from Camberwell College of Art, the London Institute. Peter Beinart is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He is also a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York, a Contributing opinion writer at the New York Times, an Editor-at-Large at Jewish Currents, and an MSNBC Political Commentator. In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with Jaser Abu Mousa, a 2025 Yale Peace Fellow and past Program Officer working for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Gaza. The two discuss life and death in Gaza on personal and collective levels. They look at Hamas, which Jaser calls a "symptom" of the problem of occupation; at how the past two-plus years of war have destroyed not only all the infrastructure needed for life in Gaza but also the social fabric, as starvation and deprivation have broken human bonds and relationships; and the ways in which Israel works to make Gaza unlivable. On a personal level, Jaser speaks of his experiences in Gaza, from the violence he witnessed as a child during the second Intifada to the devastation he experienced on and since October 7, 2023: his wife, Heba, and two of his children were killed by Israeli missiles in mid-October 2023; after two years of starvation and deprivation, his mother, sister, and sister's children were killed in the war in July 2025; and his family suffered other losses, including the killing of a nephew in the beginning of the war, injuring of his father, and arrest, detention, and violence against his brother along with other medical workers. Navigating these unfathomable losses, Jaser points to his faith in God and religion as guides as he seeks to protect his living children and look towards the future. Finally, Jaser reflects on how he relates to Israelis and declares that "if I strip him from his right to tell his story, that does not make me more just, but will make me less human.” Jaser Abu Mousa is a Yale Peace Fellow examining how Gaza's postwar reconstruction can reflect Palestinians' priorities while repairing the social fabric of society. Most recently, he was a Program Officer working for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Gaza, Palestine until the breakout of the current war in October 2023. During the war, Jaser lost his wife, Heba, and two children, Hmaid (18) and Abdulrahman (8), and left Gaza with his remaining two children, Abdallah and Sham, for treatment in the United Arab Emirates. Prior to his work with Swiss, Jaser served in the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), working under immense pressure during the 2014 war to report incidents, coordinated and communicate movements and follow intense political developments. Prior to that, Jaser worked as a social worker for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in the aftermath of the 2009 war, including leading a team of 50 social workers to run the poverty survey for UNRWA in the area of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. He also led a team of engineers to verify the work of a European contribution 30 million Euros known as the Private Sector Reconstruction in Gaza (PSRG). Between 2006-2009, he worked extensively as a political researcher in a Gaza-based think tank; during this period he reported on and analyzed Hamas' rise to power in the Strip. Jaser holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Islamic University of Gaza and a Master of Science degree in Project Management. In addition to his work as an analyst and a development/humanitarian practitioner, he has worked as a civil engineer at private construction companies and UN agencies. If you pay attention to street signs in Chicago, you'll notice imperfections and many quirks. Paul Durica of the Chicago History Museum said a coworker informed him that North Avenue becomes North Boulevard when you're east of Clark Street. “And I was like, what?” Durica recalled. “And it does! And it's because here we are, now in the park.” One of Chicago's major arteries, Ashland Avenue, has a rich history of its own. In our last episode, we looked at why streets like Ashland are occasionally labelled boulevards (like North Boulevard, sometimes the answer is because the street is adjacent to a park). Today, we're looking closer at the history of Ashland Avenue, including how it became a major thoroughfare and why the city widened it at great expense 100 years ago. (The short answer? To accommodate car traffic.) Contributing are Durica and Northwestern Professor Bill Savage, author of a forthcoming book on the anomalies and politics behind Chicago's grid system.

Principal Security Consultant and community favorite Jake Hildreth returns to The PowerShell Podcast to talk about building smarter automation, leveling up through community, and creating tools that solve real problems. Andrew shares his “stop trying so hard” theme for the year, how working smarter applies directly to scripting and security, and why getting involved with others is one of the fastest ways to grow in your career. The conversation dives into Jake's recent projects including Deck, a Markdown-to-terminal presentation tool built on Spectre.Console, and Stepper, a resumable scripting framework designed for long-running workflows that can't be fully automated end-to-end. They also explore presentation skills, avoiding “death by PowerPoint,” and why security work requires constantly re-checking assumptions as threats evolve. Key Takeaways: • Work smarter, not harder — Whether you're scripting or building a career, small sustainable improvements beat grinding yourself into a corner. • Resumable automation is a game changer — Stepper helps scripts safely pause and resume, making real-world workflows more reliable when humans or flaky APIs are part of the loop. • Community turns into real momentum — Contributing, asking questions, and sharing feedback builds skills, friendships, and opportunities faster than trying to learn alone. Guest Bio: Jake Hildreth is a Principal Security Consultant at Semperis, Microsoft MVP, and longtime builder of tools that make identity security suck a little less. With nearly 25 years in IT (and the battle scars to prove it), he specializes in helping orgs secure Active Directory and survive the baroque disaster that is Active Directory Certificate Services. He's the creator of Locksmith, Stepper, Deck, BlueTuxedo, and PowerPUG!, open-source tools built to make life easier for overworked identity admins. When he's not untangling Kerberos or wrangling DNS, he's usually hanging out with his favorite people and most grounding reality check: his wife and daughter. Almost a third of primary schools have seen a sharp rise in the number of pupils absent for four weeks or more in the wake of the pandemic. In a new report, patterns around primary and secondary schoolchildren taking days off have grown worse over two recent academic years and show no signs of reversing course. So what is contributing to this? All to discuss with Emer Smyth, Research Professor, ESRI and Anna Moya Ponce, Research Assistant, ESRI.
Contributing writer Jake Fogleman and I break down last week's oral arguments in Wolford v. It's claimed hospital overcrowding is contributing to dwindling blood supplies in the MidWest. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is holding a clinic at the West County Hotel in Ennis from 4.50pm until 8.10pm this evening. At the beginning of this week, the IBTS delivered more blood to local hospitals than any other day in its history. Broadford based Donor Recruitment Executive Alex O'Connor says the level of pressure on the healthcare system is telling.

Get early bird pricing until February 9, and for a limited time, take advantage of a $50 discount by using this code at checkout: J12026DCP. Register. Sessions. In this conversation, Jim Grisanzio from Java Developer Relations talks with Jeanne Boyarsky, a Java developer, an author, and a Java Champion based in New York City. Jeanne previews her JavaOne session, which will be a Hands on Lab for Java 25 certification. Previously, Jeanne was a guest on Duke's Corner in January 2024: Jeanne Boyarsky on Java, Learning, and Contributing. Preparing for Java 25 Certification Jeanne will be running a hands-on lab about Java 25 and getting ready for the certification: Becoming One of the First Java 25 Certified Developers in the World (or Learning New Features). The session will cover features added to the language from Java 17 to Java 25. Although the certification has not been announced yet, Jeanne is already preparing for it. "You can be one of the first people in the world to be certified if you come to my talk and learn about it and are ready when the test comes out," she says. The lab will walk through tricky questions and edge cases featuring new functionality, with coding practice to explore the features directly. Even if you are not planning to take the certification test, the lab provides a good way to learn about the new features. The session is designed for beginners with one to three years of experience. Top Features in Java 25 Several features particularly excite Jeanne. She highlights scoped values, which she describes as "a good jump from thread local in order to be able to share code in a nice, safe, contained way." She also appreciates unnamed variables and unnamed patterns because developers no longer need to use annotations to suppress warnings for unused variables. "You can just use an underscore," she says. Jeanne is particularly interested in stream gatherers because streams are one of her favorite features in Java overall. She was excited when stream gatherers were in preview, and now that they are officially released, she can use them in her job. "Nice that the excitement hasn't worn off, right?" Among the new features, Jeanne is especially interested in the new main method, as described in JEP 495: Simple Source Files and Instance Main Methods. "I'm super, super, super excited about the new main methods where you don't need a class and you don't need the whole static void mess," she says. This change makes writing code more succinct. Making Java Accessible to Students This change in how Java handles the main method enables new developers to learn Java faster. Jeanne volunteers at a high school teaching kids how to code in Java. In the past, teachers had to tell students: "Alright, public class foo, public static void. Don't worry about what any of that means. We'll tell you later." But Jeanne says that curious kids would ask what it meant, and teachers could only say that comes later. Now, students start with void main, braces, and IO print line. "It's obvious what everything does," Jeanne says. Void means it does not return anything, which makes sense to students. They can even use the Java Playground and start with just IO print line. When they move to the command line or an IDE, they only need the void main part without discussing the word class until they are ready to learn about classes and objects. "It makes their first impression of the language so much better, and it makes it so much faster and easier for them to get started," Jeanne says. She particularly appreciates the Java Playground because students do not need anything installed on their computers to start. They can write print lines, loops, and control structures, and by the time teachers ask them to install something, they are already invested in programming. "It's fun." Jeanne calls the Java Playground "awesome" and says it's a "really nice utility" even for experienced developers. She uses it herself for quick tests when she does not want to open an IDE. JavaOne on Oracle's Campus When asked about JavaOne, Jeanne describes the conference as moving to California last year, just outside San Francisco on Oracle's campus. "The weather was great, which is awesome because I live in New York City. There's snow outside right now," she laughs. The venue particularly impressed her. "It was nice because it was on Oracle's campus. You got a feel for it. It was pretty. There was a lake. There was a lot of areas to connect with people inside and outside." The conference was held largely in one building, with lunch in another building nearby, which made it easy to engage people repeatedly. "Even if you don't know people, the fact that they're at JavaOne means they're interested in Java. So, you can go over to anyone and introduce yourself." One of Jeanne's favorite memories from a previous JavaOne was meeting Duke and seeing her book in the Java bookstore. Advice for Students When asked for advice for students learning computer science, Jeanne recommends learning the fundamentals while using AI to help. "Rather than using AI to write the code, have it give you practice questions or do code review or ideas of projects," she suggests. Students also often ask what professional developers do daily. Her answer provides a realistic picture of professional software development. "Every day is a little bit different, but most days include a mix of meetings, working with my coworkers, code reviews, writing code, now with AI," she says. Problem solving takes many forms, from performance questions like "Why is this slow?" to security concerns about making systems more secure. A significant part of her role involves understanding what users actually need. "A lot of the time users ask for what they think they want and not what they actually want," Jeanne says. Through user interviews, she works to understand what they are trying to accomplish, which often leads to better solutions than what they initially requested. "So not just building what you're told is a huge thing, especially as you become more senior in your career," she says. The goal is to make users productive and happy, not just to code. Technology keeps changing, and for Jeanne, that constant evolution makes the work fun. She has embraced AI tools as coding assistants, using them for pair programming, generating tests, and suggesting next steps. When her team piloted coding assistants, they focused on choosing a tool rather than waiting for the perfect tool. "The important thing is to get a tool and get people going and using it and being more productive," she says. The learning curve is not high, and the tools pay for themselves almost immediately. However, Jeanne says that it's important to understand what you are doing rather than using AI to replace that understanding. "It's about understanding what you're doing and not using the AI to replace it because at least with the coding assistance, it's right 90, 95% of the time," she says. She talked about an example of asking AI to generate a regular expression while pairing with a junior programmer. The AI started writing it properly but then made an error. "I noticed it right away because I know what correct is," she says. After giving it another prompt with a hint, it produced the correct result. Without knowing what correct looks like, developers cannot effectively verify and fix AI-generated code. The AI Hype Cycle Regarding concerns about AI making developers obsolete, Jeanne is pragmatic. "I've heard that enough times that I'm a little skeptical," she says, adding that this is the third or fourth time some technology has been predicted to take all the jobs. Instead, she sees AI as enabling developers to accomplish more and make users happier. She has a big backlog "that goes on forever." She says it would be great if we could get more of it done and in the hands of customers. "I think we're at that phase in the hype cycle for AI where people are talking about AI like it solves all your problems, [but] it solves some of your problems. But because there's less acknowledgement of the ones it doesn't solve, it's easier to have that skepticism." When asked if AI represents a paradigm shift or just the latest tool, she responds: "Right now, I think it's the latest tool, but I do think we're going to get to the point where we're programming at a higher level." Contributing writer Jake Fogleman and I cover a new Department of Justice legal opinion claiming that the US Postal Service's ban on mailing handguns is unconstitutional. We also cover a new campaign from a rare pro-gun Democrat that could shake up the battle for the US Senate in November.
If you are having a rough time in the industry right now, you are not alone.I keep hearing the same two stories.People applying for job after job and hearing nothing back.Freelancers and agency owners finding that work is not arriving the way it used to.It is tempting to blame the economy, AI, or whatever headline is currently doing the rounds. Sometimes those things are genuinely part of the story. However, one factor we can control is whether people outside our immediate team know who we are, what we are good at, and what we care about.Be a contributor, not a lurkerMost opportunities come through people.Clients often hire because somebody they trust says, “Talk to them.” Hiring managers do the same thing, tending to hire via friends of friends.Even if you are not looking for a new job or chasing new clients, your reputation still matters. It shapes your credibility in the role you are in right now.If colleagues can see that you are respected outside your organization, and they see you sharing your expertise in public (even quietly), it tends to raise your internal credibility too. That does not mean you need to become an internet personality. It means you want to be findable and referable. The easiest place to start is simply showing upWhen people hear “build your personal brand,” they often picture loud self-promotion, forced networking, and a never-ending content treadmill. No wonder it makes so many people feel uncomfortable.A lot of the resistance comes from perfectly reasonable places:Self-promotion feels awkward.Networking can feel fake.Impostor syndrome whispers that you have nothing to offer.Fortunately, there is a gentler route. You can build a reputation by being useful, consistently. That can look like:Posting thoughtful experiences and ideas on social networks, and then sticking around to engage with the responses.Helping organize a local meetup.Chipping in regularly in Slack groups, forums, or Discord communities.Being active on LinkedIn by commenting thoughtfully on other people's posts, and occasionally having a quiet chat in DMs.The point is not volume. The point is being present.“But I do not have anything worth saying”If you have ever thought that, welcome to the club.A simple reframe helps.Instead of trying to share “best practice,” share experience. You can write things like:“In a client meeting this week, we ran into this problem. Here is how we handled it.”“We tried this approach and it did not work. Here is what we would do differently next time.”“A stakeholder pushed back on research. This argument helped.”Nobody can reasonably attack you for reporting what happened and what you learned. You are not claiming to be the all-knowing oracle of UX. You are just being a person doing the work.In fact, the stuff you struggle with can be just as useful as the stuff you have mastered. People are often far kinder than your brain predicts, especially when you share what you learned the hard way.You can mine your day job for content (without making it weird)A lot of what I share online comes straight out of conversations.Like most people, I record many meetings. Then I grab the transcript and ask an AI tool to identify a few themes that might make useful posts. It is surprising how often a “boring meeting” contains an insight that would help somebody else.If you do this, be sensible about confidentiality. Strip out client details. Keep it focused on the pattern, not the organization.Contributing helps you thinkThere is another benefit that gets overlooked. When you share an idea, even one that is half-formed, you are forced to clarify what you mean, find the edges of your thinking, and learn faster because you are teaching.Writing is basically thinking with friction. It is annoying, but it works.Do not let AI turn you into a spectatorAI makes it easy to get answers. That is useful, but there is a risk. If all we do is consume, we slowly lose the community spirit that made the early web so valuable. So if you want a simple goal for 2026, try being a little less of a spectator and a little more of a participant.

The Dáil has heard that vapes are contributing heavily to littering and pollution in Clare. TDs have debated a bill which is seeking to ban single-use vapes and only allow vendors to sell devices intended to be re-used. The legislation has been challenged by Sinn Féin, with Shannon Deputy Donna McGettigan describing it as a "piecemeal approach" and claiming it only targets products already being phased out. She says many in this county are complaining about the incorrect way in which single-use vapes are being disposed of.
Omari Richins, MPH of Public Health Careers podcast critiques the new US dietary guidelines, arguing that they prioritize industry interests over public health. Omari compares these guidelines with those of other wealthy nations, highlighting the detrimental health outcomes associated with high red meat consumption. Richins emphasizes the need for evidence-based nutrition policies that genuinely promote health and sustainability, rather than protecting powerful industries.

Pastor Matt delivered the second message in the "Becoming the 3C Disciple" series. The sermon focused on the second and third "C's" - being connected to Jesus followers and contributing to His mission. Pastor Matt emphasized that community is essential, not optional, for Christ followers, explaining that from the beginning Jesus formed a people, not just individual believers. Using the body metaphor from Romans 12, he showed how the church functions with unity without uniformity, interdependence, and mutual responsibility. He referenced Acts 2:42, where early believers devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayers, creating a shared rhythm of life that resulted in spiritual formation and witness to the watching world. The third "C" involves contributing to Jesus' mission as sent, gifted disciples who cheerfully give back to God. Pastor Matt explained that disciples are called to be "servant ambassadors" who both serve others with Christ-like humility and represent Jesus to the world. Drawing from Romans 10:13-15, he emphasized that everyone who calls on the Lord will be saved, but people need to hear the good news, which requires messengers with "beautiful feet" who bring the gospel wherever they live, work, and play.
Why is January called “Divorce Month? Why do divorce filings spike in the new year? Andrew explains that marriages don't suddenly fail in January—rather, many couples postpone action until the holidays are over. Contributing factors include: A “holiday truce” to avoid disrupting family traditions Financial stress from travel, gifts, and year-end expenses Increased time together that can intensify existing tensions To avoid a short-lived or poorly executed divorce strategy, he emphasizes the importance of education, preparation, and professional guidance rather than emotional urgency. Thanks for listening! We'd be very grateful if you'd subscribe to the podcast and give us 5 stars! Please visit Transcend Retirement or Wiser Divorce Solutions. Follow Andrew on LinkedIn too!

Contributing writer Jake Fogleman and I detail some of the biggest potential stories in guns that we are watching for in the new year. We also cover a new ruling out of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that found California's practice of limiting open carry unconstitutional. We also discuss the NRA's new lawsuit against its own foundation, which accuses the charity of misusing NRA trademarks and misleading NRA donors in an attempt to retaliate against reform-minded board members who recently took control of the membership organization.
In this episode, I'm breaking down a guide from Ben Tossel on how you can actually build with AI agents without being technical. I walk through what he's shipped as a “non-technical” builder, why he lives in the terminal/CLI, and the exact workflow he uses to go from idea → spec → build → iterate. We also talk about the meta-skill here: treating the model like your over-the-shoulder engineer/teacher, and using every bug as a learning checkpoint. The takeaway is simple: pick a tool, ship fast, fail forward, and build your own system as you go. Ben's Article: https://startup-ideas-pod.link/Ben-Tossell-Article Timestamps 00:00 – Intro 01:04 – What Ben Has Shipped 03:21 – The Workflow: Feed Context → Spec Mode → Let The Agent Rip 07:52 – His Agent Setup 08:56 – Coding On The Go 10:07 – Things to Learn 13:33 – The New Abstraction Layer: Learning To Work With Agents 14:33 – Learning from Others 16:15 – Use The Model As Your Teacher (Ask Everything) 18:13 – Contributing to Real Products 19:13 – Why this is Different 21:31 – Asking Silly Questions 24:00 – Beyond “Vibe Coding”: A New Technical Class 24:43 – Vibe Coding is a game 27:12 – Fail Forward + Permission To Build And Throw Things Away 28:16 – Pick One Tool, Minimize Friction, Keep Shipping Key Points I don't need to be a traditional engineer to ship—I can learn by watching agent output and iterating. The terminal/CLI is the power move because it's more capable and I can see what the agent is doing. “Spec mode” works best when I interrogate the plan like a philosopher instead of pretending I understand everything. agents.md becomes my portable instruction manual so every new repo starts clean and consistent. The fastest learning path is building ahead of my capability and treating bugs as checkpoints—fail forward. Numbered Section Summaries The Thesis: Non-Technical Doesn't Mean Non-Builder I open with Ben's core claim: you can ship real software by working through a terminal with agents, even if you can't write the code yourself—because you can read the output and learn the system over time. Proof: What He's Actually Shipped I run through examples Ben built—custom CLIs, a crypto tracker, “Droidmas” experiments, an AI-directed video demo system, and automations that keep projects moving even when he's away from his desk. The Workflow: Context → Spec Mode → Autonomy High Ben's process is straightforward: talk to the model to load context, switch into spec mode to pressure-test the plan, link docs/repos for exploration, then let the model run while he watches and steers when needed. http://agents.md/ The “Readme For Agents” That Follows You Everywhere I explain why agents . md matters—one predictable place to tell your agent how you want repos structured, how to commit, how to test, and what “good” looks like so each session gets smoother. Coding On The Go: PRs, Issues, Phone, Telegram, Slack We get into the real “agent native” behavior: install the GitHub app, work via pull requests and issues, tag the agent to self-fix, and even push changes from your phone—plus using Slack as a one-person “product” with an agent in the loop. Learning The Primitives: Bash, CLIs, VPS, Skills I cover the building blocks Ben's learning: bash commands and repeatable terminal workflows, preferring CLIs over MCPs to save context, and using a VPS + syncing to keep projects always-on. The Mindset Shift: The Model Is The Teacher The real unlock is treating the model like your patient expert—ask everything you don't understand, bake “explain simply” into your agent instructions, and close knowledge gaps as they appear. Fail Forward, Pick One, Keep Shipping I end on the playbook: build ahead of your capability, treat it like play, give yourself permission to throw things away, and stop tool-hopping—pick one system and go deep. The holiday season can bring with it many surprises, some of which might come in the form of a holiday bonus. If you got a bonus or are expecting a bonus this time of year, hold off on spending it all right away, because there are a few ways to maximize that cash for some great financial benefits. Links: Check out TCU University for financial education tips and resources! Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! Learn more about Triangle Credit Union Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast. A holiday bonus can feel like a windfall—a chance to splurge on gifts, vacations, or luxury items. But before you spend it all, consider this: that extra cash could be the key to building financial security and achieving your long-term goals. Here are five smart strategies to make your holiday bonus work for you. 1. Pay Down High-Interest Debt Credit card balances, personal loans, and even student loans all carry interest rates that can drain finances over time. If you're looking to improve your financial health and free up future income, consider using your bonus, or a portion of it, to pay down some of that debt. Reducing debt not only lowers your monthly obligations but also improves your credit score and financial flexibility. Unsure which debt to pay first? Start with the highest-interest debt first for maximum savings. If you have student loans, consider applying extra payments toward those not eligible for forgiveness programs. Even a small lump-sum payment can significantly reduce the total interest you'll pay over the life of the loan. 2. Build or Boost Your Emergency Fund Life is unpredictable—medical bills, car repairs, or sudden job changes can happen anytime, and without a safety net, these surprises can lead to financial stress or debt. An emergency fund acts as a financial cushion, giving you peace of mind and stability when life throws curveballs. Experts recommend saving at least three to six months of living expenses in a separate, easily accessible savings account. This ensures you can cover essentials like housing, utilities, groceries, and transportation without relying on credit cards or loans. This is another great way to use some or all of that bonus money. 3. Invest in Retirement Accounts Your bonus can be a powerful tool to accelerate your retirement savings. Contributing to accounts like a 401(k), IRA, or Roth IRA not only helps secure your financial future but can also offers valuable tax advantages. The earlier you invest, the more you benefit from compound growth—your money earns interest, and that interest earns interest over time. Look at your retirement contributions and if you haven't maxed them out yet, consider putting a portion or all of your bonus money into your retirement account. Even small, consistent investments can grow significantly over decades, thanks to compounding. And remember—prioritizing retirement savings now means more flexibility and security later. 4. Fund Short-Term Goals Dreaming of a vacation, a home upgrade, or another big-ticket item? Your bonus can help you achieve these goals without relying on credit cards or loans. Using cash instead of borrowing keeps you out of debt and saves you from paying interest later. Start by identifying your top personal goal—whether it's a family trip, a kitchen remodel, or a new tech gadget—and estimate the total cost. Then, earmark a portion of your bonus specifically for that purpose. This approach allows you to enjoy life's luxuries guilt-free while staying financially responsible. 5. Treat Yourself or Others Being thoughtful about how to spend your bonus doesn't mean cutting out all enjoyment for yourself. If you're already a budgeting pro and have all the prior items I mentioned covered, then by all means, celebrate this time of year and feel free to use that bonus to get yourself or your family something special. After all, using it to celebrate yourself, your family, or those close to you can bring forth returns in other ways. Treating yourself can provide returns of self-satisfaction, care and personal healing while treating others can build bonds and create memories that'll last for years to come.
