Check out our interview with Wallace Shawn on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/wallace-shawn-121218101 Israeli-American activist and author Miko Peled, who knows Benjamin Netanyahu personally, exposes who he really is and discusses the so-called "ceasefire," the end of Israel, and how he was accused of terrorism. But first, award-winning reporter William N. (Bill) Proctor, and activist and streamer discuss the case of Temujin Kensu, who has been wrongfully imprisoned for 37 years for a murder that was committed more than 400 miles away from where Kensu was. Miko Peled is an author, writer, speaker, and human rights activist living in the United States. He is the author of "The General's Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine" and "Injustice: The Story of the Holy Land Foundation Five." His father was a high ranking Israeli general, his maternal grandfather was a signatory to Israeli independence, his niece was tragically killed in a suicide bombing and he's a staunch advocate for a one state solution. He is considered by many to be one of the clearest voices calling for justice in Palestine, support of the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) and the creation of a single democracy with equal rights in all of historic Palestine. Educated in Jerusalem, Japan and the United States, Peled is also an accomplished professional martial artist. For 23 years, Peled ran a martial arts school that was dedicated to teaching leadership skills and non-violent conflict resolution through martial arts. Miko is also a contributor to several online publications (Mint Press, The Electronic Intifada, Democracy Now, Mondoweiss), Mikopeled.com, and produces The Miko Peled Podcast, all of which he dedicated to advocating for the creation of one democratic state with equal rights for Israelis and Palestinians. He travels regularly to Palestine where he speaks and works with the popular resistance, the BDS movement, and other justice groups. As a result, he has been arrested several times by the Israeli authorities for his activism. William N. (Bill) Proctor, founder of Proving Innocence, is an award-winning journalist, reporter, producer, and anchorperson whose career of nearly forty years spanned electronic media, radio, television, and documentaries. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Bill received his degree in Sociology and Corrections with a minor in Journalism. He concluded his career as senior staff reporter for WXYZ-TV in Southfield, MI. In the mid-1990s, he produced a series of specials on the slaying of community-college student, Scott Macklem. Through his investigations, Bill became convinced that Frederick Freeman (Temujin Kensu), the man convicted of killing Macklem, was not guilty. His passion for redressing this injustice led Bill to found Proving Innocence in 2007. In May 2013, Bill "retired" and started Bill Proctor and Associates, a communications consulting firm. In 2017 Bill formed a new organization, which looks at a multitude of issues surrounding wrongful convictions, which go beyond the scope of Proving Innocence. Joy Marie Mann is an organizer, activist, writer, journalist and long-time streamer. She resides in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She is the author of the book "Our Friend, Temujin: Serving Life, Changing Lives" ***Please support The Katie Halper Show *** For bonus content, exclusive interviews, to support independent media & to help make this program possible, please join us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/thekatiehalpershow Get your Katie Halper Show Merch here! https://katiehalper.myspreadshop.com/all Follow Katie on Twitter: @kthalps

Unsettled: American Jews and the Movement for Justice in Palestine (NYU Press, 2024) digs into the experiences of young Jewish Americans who engage with the Palestine solidarity movement and challenge the staunch pro-Israel stance of mainstream Jewish American institutions. The book explores how these activists address Israeli government policies of occupation and apartheid, and seek to transform American Jewish institutional support for Israel. Author Oren Kroll-Zeldin identifies three key social movement strategies employed by these activists: targeting mainstream Jewish American institutions, participating in co-resistance efforts in Palestine/Israel, and engaging in Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns. He argues that these young people perceive their commitment to ending the occupation and Israeli apartheid as a Jewish value, deeply rooted in the changing dynamics of Jewish life in the twenty-first century. By associating social justice activism with Jewish traditions and values, these activists establish a connection between their Jewishness and their pursuit of justice for Palestinians. In a time of internal Jewish tensions and uncertainty about peace prospects between Palestine and Israel, the book provides hope that the efforts of these young Jews in the United States are pushing the political pendulum in a new direction, potentially leading to a more balanced and nuanced conversation. At the time of recording, Israel's relentless bombardment of Rafah continues. Around 1 million people have been forced to flee the city. Condemning the assault on Rafah, Spain, Ireland and Norway have joined 140 other countries in officially recognising a Palestinian state. It is a symbolic action that has undoubtedly damaged diplomatic relations between the three countries and Israel. Nevertheless, the destruction continues, the humanitarian crisis deepens, and people in Gaza have nowhere safe to go.  Many of us around the world have looked on in horror for the last seven months, watching a genocide being carried out, with many of our own governments actively complicit. In this month's episode, we consider the vital role that people in the international labour movement can play, leveraging their unions' power to intervene directly. We are joined by Rafeef Ziadah, a Senior Lecturer in Politics and Public Policy at King's College London, and an organiser with Workers in Palestine; Riya Al'Sanah, an organiser and researcher with Workers in Palestine; and Katy Fox-Hodess, a Senior Lecturer in Employment Relations at the University of Sheffield, and a researcher and labour educator with Workers in Palestine. Rafeef, Riya and Katy talk about the history of labour solidarity in the context of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, Palestinian workers' conditions in Gaza and the West Bank, and how trade unions can move beyond simply issuing statements in solidarity with Palestine. We discuss the ongoing university encampments, dockworkers and 'Block the Boat' actions, and the ways in which the Palestine solidarity movement can build coalitions with arms industry workers, to stop the flow of weapons to Israel. For the show's 150th episode Parvez & Omar are joined by the second guest ever to appear on the podcast, Zahra Billoo , Civil rights Attorney and Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA). Zahra brings her years of tireless Civil Rights work and activism to bear as she discusses the recent protests and encampments taking place across college campuses placing them within the broader Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and discussing their overall goals and objectives. The conversation also tackles the criticisms that such protests and encampments have garnered from voices outside of and within the Muslim community, as well as certain initiatives and organizations that some argue seek to normalize relations with the State of Israel and Zionism. About Zahra Billoo Zahra Billoo serves as the Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA) office, the oldest CAIR chapter office. Since joining in 2009, Zahra has led the organization through a period of six-fold growth. Today, she manages one of the largest CAIR offices in the country with a team of civil rights and social justice advocates dedicated to the empowerment of American Muslims through legal services, legislative advocacy, and community organizing. Under Zahra's leadership, CAIR-SFBA has filed lawsuits against the United States Department of Justice, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Southwest Airlines, representing American Muslims facing discriminatory treatment. CAIR-SFBA has also significantly expanded its capabilities to provide know-your-rights sessions on a nearly weekly basis to mosques and community members in the San Francisco Bay Area, while also providing direct legal representation to Bay Area residents facing numerous civil rights violations, including FBI interviews, employment discrimination, airport harassment, school bullying, and hate crimes. Zahra's advocacy has included media appearances in local and national media, including MSNBC, NPR, the San Francisco Chronicle, and even FOX News. Among her awards, she received the 2017 Human Rights Award from the Society of American Law Teachers and the 2018 Community Builder Award from People Acting in Community Together (PACT). She was also listed by the San Jose Mercury News as a “Woman to Watch” in March 2017 for Women's History Month, as well as by the Chronicle of Philanthropy in their January 2018 cover story on millennials who lead. She is currently a fellow with Levi Strauss Foundation Pioneers in Justice, a senior fellow with the American Leadership Forum's Silicon Valley Chapter and an alumna of Rockwood's Fellowship for a New California, LeaderSpring's Executive Directors Fellowship, and USC's American Muslim Civil Leadership Institute. Zahra earned her undergraduate degrees from the California State University, Long Beach, and her Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Hastings. She is licensed to practice law in California.

Ever since the beginning of Israel's genocidal attacks on Gaza, global protests have grown exponentially. This is most evident on the streets, and also, very importantly, on college campuses, where activism for Palestinian liberation have often been met with brutal repression.  Chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace have been shut down, students placed under surveillance and disciplined, and protesters physically attacked. Today on Speaking Out of Place we talk with student activists from two campuses who have achieved remarkable victories—student activists at the University of California, Davis, passed a measure that prevents any of the Associated Students, University of California, Davis (ASUDC)'s $20m budget from being used on companies named in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.  And students at Stanford staged the longest sit-in protest in Stanford's history. The Sit In to Stop genocide occupied tents and staffed tables 24/7 for an unprecedented 120 nights and days, and at one point drew 500 people in the space of 4 hours to defend the encampment well until the early morning hours. We learn about these campaigns, the motivations behind them, and how activists will press forward.

Many of you feel you have watched the horror of Israel's onslaught against Palestinians in Gaza and felt fury and grief - but helplessness. You may have participated in large demos, tweeted about it, peacefully occupied a train station, yelled at your computer screens and TVs, or offloaded on to friends and family - but ultimately felt "there's nothing more to do to stop this genocidal war!"Well there is. I interviewed Omar Barghouti - he's a Palestinian human rights defender, winner of the 2017 Gandhi Peace Award, and co-founder of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement https://bdsmovement.net/. George Soros Slammed for Investing $15 Million in Anti-Israel Pro Hamas Organizations

Respected financier and philanthropist George Soros has been under considerable examination by Israel's UN Ambassador, consequent to his investment of more than $15 million into several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) ostensibly backing Hamas. In an unfortunate event on October 7, Hamas initiated an incursion into southern Israel leading to the tragic loss of approximately 1,200 lives, including over 30 American citizens. There's been a common understanding that sprouts from these events — Hamas hasn't truly been advocating for peace or seeking a resolution to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaign, a movement taking aim at the State of Israel, isn't foreign to this context. This movement shares resemblances to the Nazi- led embargo against Jewish-owned businesses during the initial stages of the Holocaust, explaining why it was categorized as antisemitic by both the German and Austrian parliaments. Some investigative work raised concerns to the point that the Open Society Foundations (OSF) were believed to have funneled substantial resources into anti-Israel NGOs that purportedly endorsed Hamas. In a spotlighted report by Fox News Digital in October, it was indicated that Biden's initially appointed envoy to Iran, Malley, was temporarily sidelined for his attempts to engage with the U.S.-proclaimed terrorist groups, Hamas and the Hezbollah based in Lebanon.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Justifying the Unjustifiable in Palestine

Ralph is joined by author and human rights activist Miko Peled. They discuss the excuses that Israel uses to defend the atrocities they commit against Palestinians, and the truth behind all the propaganda. Miko Peled is an author, writer, speaker, and human rights activist living in the United States. He is considered by many to be one of the clearest voices calling for justice in Palestine, support of the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) and the creation of a single democracy with equal rights in all of historic Palestine. Mr. Peled was born and raised in Jerusalem. His grandfather was a signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence and his father was a general in the 1967 war. Anybody who is not courageous enough to stand up and speak the truth and stand up for what is right, because they might be called this name or that name—it's cowardice, it's hypocrisy. Being called antisemitic is a small price to pay when you talk about standing for the rights of millions of people who have been living under such terror for so many decades.Miko Peled This is pure revenge. What we're seeing is vengeance of a military force and a state that have been humiliated. And just like any bully, any gangster who's been humiliated, they take it out on the weakest people they can find, people who cannot defend themselves… It's revenge for the sake of revenge. It's savagery for the sake of savagery. It's brutality in its purest form. There's no other reason than the brutality itself. Miko Peled Palestinians deserve nothing less than the lifting of the siege, release of all prisoners, and the dismantling of the apartheid state. Nothing less than that should be demanded. And all we're seeing people talk about is ceasefires, as though a ceasefire is some great accomplishment. Ceasefire does not provide the possibility of a future where this is not repeated. What needs to be demanded now is a political solution that will ensure the safety and security of Palestinians—and that is never part of the conversation. A ceasefire does not secure the lives or the security of Palestinians, because we know Israel will violate it a week later. Miko Peled It's not going to collapse because Israelis agree. It's not going to collapse because Israelis wake up one morning in a good mood. Israel is going to have to be forced on its knees. Just like in South Africa, whites in South Africa were on their knees. We're talking about severe sanctions. We're talking about closing down all diplomatic missions. We're talking about not allowing Israelis to participate in sporting events, cultural events, any events, academic arenas. They need to be shunned. Israeli society and the apartheid state that they created need to be brought on their knees.Miko Peled In Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. The Intercept's Prem Thakker reports 43 members of Congress now support a ceasefire. Some notable additions in recent days include Reps. Becca Balint, Sara Jacobs and Jamie Raskin, the first Jewish members to call for a ceasefire, and Jeff Merkley, the second Senator to call for a ceasefire. Pressure continues to mount on Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, but they still do not support a ceasefire. And the LA Times editorial board has become the first in the nation to call for a ceasefire.2. According to Time, Reporters Without Borders has filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court for war crimes committed against Palestinian journalists in Gaza. The complaint cites the "deliberate, total or partial, destruction of the premises of more than 50 media outlets in Gaza." This crisis will likely prove decisive for the legitimacy of the ICC, as several countries including South Africa, have alleged that the court is biased in favor of western-aligned governments.3. Haaretz reports former Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, who crafted the “Leahy Law” which prohibits U.S. military assistance to foreign security forces that violate human rights, has gone on record saying that the U.S. routinely ignores Israeli human rights abuses. Leahy said “it appears to me that shooting civilians and targeting civilian infrastructure, when you can't prove it is being used by Hamas, would be a violation of human rights…What is being done to apply the Leahy law now? I don't know. I know past administrations have been too concerned to do it. It should apply to the Israeli Defense Forces, unless the administration, as many have, has waived it."4. While not calling for a ceasefire, both Bernie Sanders and President Biden have announced plans to reshape military aid to Israel. Senator Sanders has put forth a plan to condition military aid upon multiple criteria including “the right of displaced Gazans to return to their homes” and “an end to settler violence in the West Bank.” Barak Ravid reports President Biden is considering imposing sanctions on Israeli settlers – who have long operated with legal impunity – threatening to ban visas for violent Israeli extremists in the West Bank. Ravid adds this would be the “1st time the U.S. [has] publicly consider[ed] individual sanctions against settlers.”5. KCRA reports The California Democratic convention was interrupted at multiple points by demonstrators demanding the candidates to fill Dianne Feinstein's Senate seat call for a ceasefire. Rep. Barbara Lee has done so, but not Reps. Katie Porter or Adam Schiff. Barbara Lee won the most votes at the convention, but fell short of the 60% threshold required to get the formal endorsement of the state party.6. A stunning ceasefire protest in the Bay Area saw activists park their cars on the bay bridge, then throw their keys into the water below – making it impossible for them or the police to move the vehicles, per FOX 8. Another protest at the DNC resulted in a police crackdown leaving 90 protesters injured, per the Guardian. Yet another protest at DC's Union Station resulted in 3 arrests on vandalism charges for protesters leaving bloody handprints on the inside of the station, per WTOP. Expect these disruption tactics to escalate as political leaders continue to ignore demands for a ceasefire.7. While many colleges are clamping down on pro-Palestine protests, Ryan Grim reports Occidental has set the model for engagement with student activists. The college announced that, following a student occupation of the administration office, they would pursue a dialogue with the student activists. Both the students and the administration stressed that Barack Obama got his start in activism at Occidental, pressuring the administration to divest from apartheid South Africa.8. In other news, Bloomberg reports the Public Prosecutor's office in Guatemala has conducted raids and arrests of Semilla party members. Semilla candidate Bernardo Arevalo was elected earlier this year, successfully, dealing a rare defeat to the openly corrupt political establishment in that country. The Public Prosecutor's office also announced that they will file charges against Arevalo, his vice-president elect, and several Semilla congressmen. The State Department has decried this move and is seeking to “Impose Additional Visa Restrictions in Response to Anti-Democratic Actions in Guatemala.” 9. Finally, More Perfect Union reports that “For the first time ever, U.S. auto workers have gotten a shuttered factory reopened. Workers at the massive Belvidere [Illinois] Jeep plant were laid off or told to relocate in March. Now the plant is not only reopening — @UAW won three times as many jobs and a $30/hour wage floor.” This stunning victory shows what is possible in terms of revitalizing domestic manufacturing with a renewed labor movement. And that is something we can all be thankful for. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: Building Solidarity with Palestine

Join leading Palestine solidarity activists for a discussion of the role of BDS in solidarity with Palestine. Israel's attack on the 2.3 million Palestinians in the occupied and besieged Gaza Strip has been described by genocide scholars, international law experts and UN officials as “a textbook case of genocide.” Israel's bombardment of Gaza has killed thousands, including over 3,500 children, and destroyed entire neighborhoods, leaving over one million Palestinians displaced. In parallel, Palestinians are being dehumanized and Palestine solidarity is being targeted internationally. It is crucial for all people of conscience to find practical ways to struggle against the root causes of the violence: oppression and injustice. Launched in 2005, the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement is backed by Palestinian grassroots movements, unions, and political parties. BDS calls for an end to international state, corporate and institutional complicity in Israel's regime of oppression so that Palestinians can enjoy their rights. The BDS movement is inspired by the South African anti-apartheid struggle and the US Civil Rights movement, rooted in a century-old heritage of Palestinian popular resistance to settler colonialism and apartheid. BDS has taken the forms of worker strikes, mass demonstrations, public diplomacy, art, and education. As we protest ongoing Israeli war crimes, we must also act to end our own government's complicity in Israeli apartheid. BDS provides the means to exert meaningful material pressure on state and private actors complicit in Israel's violence. The academic boycott of Israel, a branch of the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, is one of the richest—and most divisive—topics in the politics of knowledge today. In Boycott Theory and the Struggle for Palestine: Universities, Intellectualism and Liberation (Rowman & Littlefield, 2022), Nick Riemer addresses the most fundamental questions raised by the call to sever ties with Israeli universities, and offers fresh arguments for doing so. More than a narrow study of the boycott campaign, the book details how academic BDS relates to a range of live controversies in progressive politics on questions such as disruptive protest, silencing and free speech, the real-world consequences of intellectual work, the rise of the far right, and the nature of grassroots campaigning. Written for open-minded readers, the book presents the fullest justification for the academic boycott yet given, considering BDS efforts on campuses around the world. The opening chapters explore the fundamentals of the academic boycott campaign, detailing the conditions on the ground in Palestinian and Israeli higher education and analyzing debates over the boycott and its adoption or resistance in the west. The later chapters contextualize the boycott with respect to broader questions about the links between theory and practice in political change. Directly rebutting the arguments of BDS's opponents, Boycott Theory and the Struggle for Palestine demonstrates the political and intellectual soundness of a controversial and often misrepresented campaign. In defending an original view of the differences between reflecting on politics and doing it in the specific context of the liberation of Palestine, the book's arguments will have a resonance for many wider debates beyond the context of either universities or the Middle East. Nick Riemer is senior lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Sydney. As a Palestine solidarity activist, Riemer has published widely in both academic and popular outlets and been criticized openly by conservative media. In addition to his Palestine solidarity work, his political activity includes long-term, close involvement both with the Australian National Tertiary Education Union and with the Refugee Action Coalition in Sydney, a grassroots refugee rights group. He has written for The Guardian, Jacobin, Al Jazeera English, The Australian, The Sydney Morning Herald and many other publications. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Many Democrats hate Israel. And they are not shy about it. The latest disgusting example is House Progressive Caucus Chairwoman Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who publicly called Israel a "racist state." Jayapal and many other Democrats are also boycotting Wednesday's speech from Israeli President Isaac Herzog to a joint session of Congress. But it's not just demonization of Israeli policies or Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Many prominent leftists also advocate for the Boycott, Divest, & Sanctions (BDS) movement to cripple Israel's economy and openly accuse Israel of engaging in apartheid against the Palestinians.Stop Anti-Semitism Founder Liora Rez joins Sara to explain why this type of hateful rhetoric and the pursuit of anti-Semitic policies destabilize American society and the world. She also explains how Jayapal and figures like Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and AOC consider themselves "Justice Democrats, " but their goals don't resemble justice at all. Rez also strongly rejects Jayapal's assertion that any criticism of her is rooted in hatred of women and people of color. Rez says your sex and the color of your skin "are not a green light to spew bigotry." In this episode Carl interviews syndicated columnist, speaker and podcaster, Josh Hammer, who happens to be a Jew, about his new organization “Jews Against Soros.”You're not an anti-Semite if you criticize Soros's policies. This is a diversionary tactic the left uses to silence those of us on the right from critiquing their radical agenda to fundamentally transform America. Meanwhile, Soros goes unchallenged as he bankrolls the destruction of America's big cities by funding “reform prosecutors” who avoid prosecuting violent and property crimes; Soros donates huge sums of money to open borders groups; he funds the Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions(BDS) against Israel, and even funds Palestinian terrorists. George Soros must be confronted because he's evil, not because he's Jewish. Josh Hammer is teaching us how to fight back.
