Send us a Text Message. The Beale ciphers are several coded messages, originally published in an 1885 pamphlet. This pamphlet purports to tell the story of frontiersman Thomas Beale, who (along with his party) mined quantities of gold, silver, and jewels (currently worth approximately $38 million), transported them across the country on wagons and/or pack mules, and buried them in a underground vault somewhere in Virginia. The ciphers themselves (allegedly) contain exact instructions, in code, to this vast treasure.Support the Show.
In the year 1822, a Virginia innkeeper was given a locked box that he was told not to open for 10 years. Decades later, he finally opened it to see that it contained ciphers which pointed to the location of buried treasures. These ciphers have become some of the most puzzling codes in history and have never been solved. Today, we dive into the bewildering mystery of the Beale Ciphers. Is there really $90 Million worth of gold, silver and jewels buried somewhere in Bedford County, Virginia? This is the story of the three ciphertexts originating from an 1885 pamphlet called The Beale Papers, detailing treasure being buried by a man named Thomas J. Beale in a secret location in about 1820. Amateur treasure hunters, mathematicians, and even the NSA have been trying (and failing) to crack these codes ever since. Learn about the mystery of possible buried treasure in Virginia.
The Beale Papers were a text published in 1885 that contained three ciphers that supposedly relay the location, content, and ownership of a treasure hidden in the mountains of Virginia. Over the years only one cipher has been decoded through the use of the Declaration of Independence as a book key. This cipher noted the content of the treasure. However, no one has successfully decoded either of the other two which most importantly denote the treasure's location. Is the treasure real? Are the ciphers just a hoax that continues to live on? Take a listen and find out about the Beale Treasure.
The origins of this treasure hunt are as complex as the ciphers themselves. Who really was the man behind the codes? And why are they seemingly still eluding the most advanced cryptographers in the world? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On this episode of Weird Renown we will be discussing a legend in Virginia involving a man named Thomas J. Beale who was part of a group of thirty men who discovered a mine full of treasure while hunting buffalo in New Mexico in the 1800's. Thomas was said to have transported the treasure back to Virginia, making several trips. Becoming worried that he would be apprehended on the road, Thomas devised three coded messages that when read together would reveal the location of a treasure that is said to be valued at nearly 60 million dollars. To this day, a discovery of this treasure has not been recorded, despite many attempts.Thank you for joining me for another episode of Weird Renown!Credit for Weird Renown theme:Black Tar - Karl Casey at White Bat AudioVisit http://heathershouse.life for a full catalogue of my work.Visit the Weird Renown Merch store: https://teespring.com/stores/heather-shouse-weird-renownLet's chat on Discord: https://discord.com/invite/eMCcJ6bDj7

The story of the Beale Ciphers; a set of three encrypted notes from the nineteenth century purportedly describing the location of hidden treasure. Only one has been deciphered.
Treasure hunters comb Virginia searching for a legendary hoard of gold and silver.
“I have deposited in the county of Bedford, about four miles from Buford's [Tavern], in an excavation or vault, six feet below the surface of the ground, the following articles, belonging jointly to the parties whose names are given in number three, herewith: The first deposit consisted of ten hundred and fourteen pounds of gold, and thirty-eight hundred and twelve pounds of silver, deposited Nov. eighteen nineteen. The second was made Dec. eighteen twenty-one, and consisted of nineteen hundred and seven pounds of gold, and twelve hundred and eighty-eight of silver; also jewels, obtained in St. Louis in exchange to save transportation, and valued at thirteen thousand dollars. The above is securely packed in iron pots, with iron covers. The vault is roughly lined with stone, and the vessels rest on solid stone, and are covered with others. Paper number one describes the exact locality of the vault, so that no difficulty will be had in finding it.” - Thomas Jefferson Beale, from the second cipher text of the Beale Papers, allegedly written in 1822.Is it time to channel your inner Gus Chiggins and get to hunting for gold?
