Passage(s): Matthew 24:36-46Matthew 25 is given to set in writing the unfailing promise that Jesus is coming. Don't ever waste a day assuming you have tomorrow. Seek every day to live in preparation for the moment you stand before Jesus.
This week, we’re checking out The Not So Buried Treasure and The Condemned Backscratcher! Plus, I ramble about It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, and the career of Linda Woolverton! Let’s go!
In this episode, we follow the Annabel Lee legend backward: from modern ghost tours to nineteenth-century poetry, from pirate treasure maps to academic footnotes, from Sullivan's Island beaches to a forgotten corner of a graveyard. What emerges is not a simple ghost story, but an obsession—shared by scholars, storytellers, and an entire city convinced that something precious was buried in the South Carolina Lowcountry and must be found. Do you have your mom or dad's old box of coins? Today, how to get them valued and how to sell them.
New York City conjures up images of a neon-drenched Times Square, skyscrapers gleaming in the sun, and the labyrinthine subway system. Yet the city also boasts three main rivers; the Hudson to the west, the East River to the east (unsurprisingly), and the Harlem to the north. Where we find rivers, we can find islands. Where we find islands, we find folklore. New York is no exception. That said, the stories we'll explore this time are far from the druids of Ynys Môn or the megaliths of Menorca. These are stories of people, those arriving, those forced to stay, and those who want to bury treasure. Let's go and meet them in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore… Find the images and references on the blog post: https://www.icysedgwick.com/new-york-islands-legends/ Get your free guide to home protection the folklore way here: https://www.icysedgwick.com/fab-folklore/ Become a member of the Fabulous Folklore Family for bonus episodes and articles at https://patreon.com/bePatron?u=2380595 Buy Icy a coffee or sign up for bonus episodes at: https://ko-fi.com/icysedgwick Fabulous Folklore Bookshop: https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/fabulous_folklore Pre-recorded illustrated talks: https://ko-fi.com/icysedgwick/shop Request an episode: https://forms.gle/gqG7xQNLfbMg1mDv7 Get extra snippets of folklore on Instagram at https://instagram.com/icysedgwick Find Icy on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/icysedgwick.bsky.social 'Like' Fabulous Folklore on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fabulousfolklore/
What if you found you were sitting on tons of money that you didn't even know about? It sounds like the beginning of a new Netflix series, right? But this happened in real life to our returning champion, Agency owner and entrepreneur Cath Rehorn. She will be the first to admit that numbers are not her. She's a words and people person, not a data ninja. But she developed a conversation with ChatGPT to get it to review her Stripe data, even though, as she also admits, at first she really didn't have any idea what she was doing. And she realized that with minimum effort–like, mainly, sending out a few emails–she could add 54,000 British pounds, or about $70,000 US, to her revenues every year. And with only a little more effort, she reckoned, she could bring in even more. Her thought process and how she tackled a clumsy problem with such persistence and humor should be of interest, and possibly very valuable, to anyone who runs a business and even does a pretty bad job of keeping track of their numbers. You probably remember Cath because her podcast, titled Selling Them With Kindness, got a lot of engagement and some really heartfelt comments from listeners. Cath's business is called Kind Copy. She lives in Wales in the UK. She has a true family business, since it employs herself, her husband, her sister and 2 other team members. In 2001, in the village of Dahong, nestled in the heart of China's Hubei province, the Lunar New Year was in full swing. As fireworks illuminated the night sky, another series of explosions, muffled and more sinister, suddenly resonated deep in the nearby mountain… The villagers immediately realized that tomb robbers were about to strike, and they alerted the police. Although the location of this tomb had been known about for a long time, its contents still remained a mystery… Upon entering the mausoleum, after the arrest of the looters by the police, the archeologists sent by the authorities discovered a veritable treasure trove, dating back to the Ming Dynasty. The find included thousands of breathtakingly beautiful objects made from gold, jade, and precious stones … as well as emeralds from the other side of the world. Stargates are the theoretical transfer of matter or energy from one point to another without traversing the physical space between them. It is a common subject in science fiction and fantasy literature, film, video games, and television. In some situations, teleporting is presented as time traveling across space. But what if these portals aren't just creations of human imagination and were used in ancient times by the Native Americans? Traverse the desert planes with Joel as he digs through tales of deities of antiquity and their portals from the heavens to earth. He looks at the Kachina of Hopi lore and if they are bringing with them a fifth world after the apocalypse. He also looks at the paper Vine Deloria Jr. and Richard Stoffle wrote for the Department of Defense in June 1998 entitled, "Native American Sacred Sites and the Department of Defense" and its connection to active Stargates. Finally, Joel discovers "Searching for Arizona's Buried Treasures" by Ron Quinn and a strange story a local Native American told him of a "Doorway To The Gods" that seemingly swallowed people up and they never returned. Grace Potter was raised in rural Vermont by parents who were seeking a different way of life, one with an emphasis on the arts and a connection to the land. Thanks to her parents' extensive record collection, Grace grew up listening to a lot of soul and gospel by artists like the Staple Singers and Mahalia Jackson. You can still hear those influences in her music now, even as she's created her own distinctive bluesy sound. Often compared to Bonnie Raitt or Janis Joplin, Grace has a powerful voice and the stage presence to match. And now she has a new album called Medicine that's actually not new at all. It was produced with T Bone Burnett 17 years ago before her record label decided to shelve it in favor of a different direction. And even though it was recorded when she was just 24, it sounds as fresh and timely as if she cut it yesterday. Sid talks to Grace about the vision issues that shaped the way she sees the world, the impact of motherhood on her songwriting, and how she's preparing to sing the national anthem at the 2025 Kentucky Derby. Rosemary decides to try to get to the bottom of the whole Ava thing, so she breaks into her room and takes her trunk. Ava figures out that they're onto her so she finally comes clean - she used to work with a mentalist conman who accidentally pickpocketed a Pinkerton and blamed Ava, so she fled to Hope Vally which she head about in Elizabeth's book. By the time they do that, word gets out that Allie and Oliver are missing. So they go to the woods. Eventually Elizabeth finds them followed by Nathan. Yay! Lucas tells Edie about the executive order and she says that's going to bring a war but they can still be friends. Angela is nervous about the school but her mom encourages her to give it a shot. They send Ava on her way.
