Amy Tavalin As agriculture and homesteading gets more popular, our mission is just to provide sustainable agriculture for Tennessee. We're trying to get young farmers in who are interested in becoming farmers. So the classes that we offer span young and old, small and large businesses. Richard Brown Melissa and Buddy Hand live in Bedford County and are just now getting into homesteading, but they hope to grow into something bigger. Melissa Hand We want to take that to the next level and become you know, for profit farmers. We love being here because we are exposed to so many different ideas. We know what we love, but we also are looking at these new things now, because we've now been exposed to those things and learn more about them here at this conference. And it's been amazing. Buddy Hand For new farmers, it's fantastic because you really don't know what you don't know. And you can take a large variety of classes from experts, you know, governmental people that are there to help you learn your county extension agents and what not, the Farm Bureau I mean just a lot of things that are assets that we never knew we had. Thomas Capps The Pick Tennessee conference is driven to bring new people into agriculture and teach them to grow their own food, keeping that industry alive even with more urban sprawl in our state. For Tennessee Home and Farm Radio. I'm Thomas Capps.

on that Day: A Trilogy by Thomas Fitzhugh Sheets"on that Day" is a trilogy of books written without knowing how it all would end: Book #1: “The Death of The Promise,” Book #2: “The Resurrection of The Promise,” and Book#3: “The Land of The Promise.” The common theme of the trilogy was witnessing the faith of the First-Century Church, as demonstrated in the Parable of The Ten Virgins. The five wise virgins lived in anticipation and preparation for the groom, while the five foolish virgins were locked out. Paul's view of this faith is expressed in 2 Timothy 4:7–8. In Ephesians 4, Paul instructs teachers and preachers to bring unity of The Faith in The Body of Christ. Faith in The Second Coming and the awarding of eternal life fulfill the Promise of resurrection made to Abraham. Salvation is not awarded to anyone prior to this event but is a promise until Jesus' return and cannot be possessed this side of the grave. The author declares that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, and the perishable cannot inherit the imperishable.Thomas Fitzhugh Sheets is a seventy-six-year-old semi-retired businessman who, while never attending college, has had a reasonably successful career. He now lives at Providence Farm in Bedford County, Virginia, and has a beef cattle operation, raising calves for the feeder market. During discussions with a friend, a retired pastor, and a marine chaplain who has decided that he is “done with the church,” Tom was challenged to write a book. His friend understood his ongoing frustration with both the message and direction of the established church and felt that many others shared this frustration. Tom, who has a heart for the lost within the church, believes that the church has been hijacked by the instant-gratification crowd. Thus, he felt that he was challenged to address this issue, and as a result of this challenge, The Road to Restoration, The Death of the Promise, and The Resurrection of The Promise were developed.https://www.amazon.com/that-Day-Thomas-Sheets/dp/1959761382https://www.onthatday-timothy2468.com/http://www.ReadersMagnet.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/12723tfsrm.mp3

On July 17th, 2023, Bedford County, Tennessee, and its county seat of Shelbyville lost their 149-year-old newspaper of record, the Times-Gazette, as Holler Media locked the doors and fired the staff of all six community publications they owned that served counties around Nashville. Within a matter of just a few weeks, Morristown, Tennessee-based Lakeway Publishers, who owns and operates nine other community newspapers in the state plus others in Missouri and Virginia, had hired a number of the Holler staff. They also announced they were starting two new publications — The Bedford County Post and The Marshall County Post — to provide news coverage to the Shelbyville and Lewisburg, Tennessee areas. In a recent interview, Lakeway Senior Vice President Keith Ponder stated, "As Shelbyville's long-time newspaper closed abruptly, we saw a need to serve the community with locally produced community-based journalism. We kept the team together and have worked hard to tell the stories of Bedford County. A great community needs a great community newspaper, and we want to meet that need here — just like we have in Tullahoma for nearly 50 years. We have a strong tradition of service while producing award-winning work.” “I can't stress enough that we were devastated when these communities were left without a newspaper,” said Michael Fishman, president of Lakeway Publishing. "And being in the adjoining counties in this region, it just felt that we had the resources and the experience to return a local newspaper to these communities. News deserts — we're totally opposed to that happening," Fishman said. "And while we can't go all over Tennessee, by any means, we were founded on providing quality, local journalism to communities so they would have news and information. And we also feel a lot that it supports the economic vitality of that community to have a good local newspaper." In this episode of E&P Reports, we go beyond reporting on news publishers by focusing on the impact on a population when they learn they may lose their newspaper of record. Appearing in this interview and speaking about the value of local journalism as it affects the people and public policy of their community are Bedford County, Tennessee's Chris White, director of planning, Greg Vick, county commissioner for District 2 and Curt Cobb, county clerk & master.
A Pennsylvania man, Derek Louk, has entered a guilty plea for third-degree murder in the killing of his cousin, Tyler Matthai, last year. The incident involved a gruesome cover-up attempt, which included burning the victim's body with the assistance of his estranged girlfriend and another individual. The guilty plea was made in Bedford County Court and was accompanied by an admission of guilt for abuse of a corpse. According to Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry's press release on Thursday, Derek Louk, not only confessed to fatally shooting Matthai on April 26, 2022, but also revealed his involvement in conspiring with two others to burn the victim's body and conceal the crime. "Beyond pulling the trigger, the defendant orchestrated a scheme to obliterate the evidence - the victim's remains," Henry stated. "This plea signifies an acknowledgment of responsibility for these heartless acts of violence and disregard for human life." Louk's accomplice in the cover-up, Courtney S. Boden, identified as the estranged girlfriend of the victim, received a sentence of 2¼ to 12 years in prison after admitting her involvement in burning the body and attempting to cover up the crime. Another individual, Jordon Robertson, has also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing. The events unfolded on April 26, 2022, when Louk allegedly used an AR-15 rifle to shoot Matthai twice, claiming self-defense after Matthai entered his residence and forcefully took Boden to a car waiting outside. Louk then allegedly dragged Matthai's lifeless body to a hole in his yard, buried it under tires, doused it in kerosene, and ignited it, maintaining the fire for approximately six hours while he slept. According to Louk, he and Boden had a seven-year friendship since his relocation to Bedford County. The court documents revealed that Matthai and Boden had a history of abusive behavior in their relationship. Louk recounted that Matthai forcefully entered his home, took Boden from the living room, and placed her in the back seat of her car. Louk retrieved his AR-15 rifle and shot Matthai in the arm and, subsequently in the back. He asserted that he verified Matthai's death by checking for a pulse on multiple occasions. Louk then proceeded to bury Matthai's body in a makeshift grave on his property and set it ablaze with kerosene. Louk disclosed that the fire burned for six hours while he slept, and the following morning, he covered the burnt remains with soil. Authorities were alerted to the situation by a relative, who claimed that Boden had mentioned Matthai's drug use and aggressive behavior that night. According to the relative's testimony, Boden informed them that Louk had warned Matthai to stop his violent behavior or face consequences, leading to Louk allegedly shooting him. Boden reportedly told the witness she attempted to stem the bleeding, but Matthai overdosed and died. She confessed to disposing of the body and belongings in an undisclosed manner, obliterating all traces of the victim. She further attempted to cleanse bloodstains from a vehicle and sell the murder weapon. Louk's plea agreement stipulates a prison term of 15 to 30 years. The sentencing is scheduled for September 22. Dispatcher and aspiring forensic artist Willa Martin won't give up the hope that her friend Anna will be found—alive. All clues point to the fact that she's run off, leaving Willa and her newfound faith behind, but Willa knows better. Following a lead in the drought-ridden wilderness of Washington State, Clancy stumbles upon a dead body unconnected to his case. Little does he know that when his 911 call connects to Willa, a chain of events is set into motion that will draw them toward one another but also toward a killer. Thrown together in a race against the clock, Clancy and Willa battle through wildfires and misdirection as they chase a killer through the heat of summer. Art of Deception - Cara Putman Eight years ago she ran to safety. Now Charlotte Montgomery's past has caught up with her. Artist Charlotte Montgomery lost everything eight years ago to protect her son. She's built a safe life to protect him, and now her past has caught up with her She'll do anything to bring down her ex. When an Italian crime family reappears in her life determined to make her participate in their money-laundering scheme, she's determined to end it even if it means pretending she's a willing participant. When Charlotte's past and present collide, it threatens everything she's built and it's a race to survive. Real Justice - Katy Lee Her days of hiding are over. A ransom note left in her apartment tells Christina Depalo that changing her name and hiding in the big city hadn't been enough to escape her dangerous family. The Morans have kidnapped her roommate, demanding Christina return to Georgia. But that will mean facing the cutthroat attorney Marcus Cartwright, a man she once loved but who only wanted to take down her family. Marcus had started a coalition with his friend to crack down on organized crime in Savannah. But when his friend loses his life in a supposed accident, nothing will stop Marcus from seeking justice, not even the Moran's prodigal daughter who left town twelve years ago. Nobody will derail him this time. But then Christina never was a nobody. Induction - Chautona Havig Someone wants her dead. Not happening on his watch. When Ramon Simon goes missing, the small town of Fairbury burns with rumors hotter than the sidewalk in July. They're certain he's either left his wife, or she killed him (not that they'd blame her). As the weeks pass and the police fail to find answers, things heat up more when Anna Simon disappears, too. If that's not strange enough, the chief of police orders his officers to leave Anna out of their investigation. As a new recruit into a secret protection service known only as The Agency to the few who know it exists, Keith Auger doesn't know what he's doing, but he's determined to do his new job well. But when he finds himself guarding a woman before he's fully trained, he already begins to doubt the wisdom of this career path. Pressure mounts as Keith tries to stay one step ahead of the men out to kill Anna and another step ahead of Anna who is determined to find answers no one will give her. Keith can't help but wonder: will his first assignment with The Agency be his last? Where's the best place to find more information about Summer Heat? The podcast went on the road (with a special guest) to Charlottesville, Va. this week to talk to Margie Howell. Margie grew up on a dairy and beef farm in Bedford County, Va. near the area that is now best known for Smith Mountain Lake. She had typhoid fever when she was 10 and admittedly said was lucky to have survived. She attended Mary Washington and UVA and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She met husband Nat Howell at a conference and that would start them on an adventure neither expected. Nathaniel Howell would start a career with the Foreign Service that would eventually lead to a call from President Reagan to be the U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait from 1987- 1991. Nat was the ambassador during Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. During Nat's twenty-six year foreign service career, Margie raised their two boys Chip and Edward, completed a masters degree and was a college professor. Paul said at the end that Margie had lived a fascinating life! They finished by talking about her family and how she is working on establishing an endowment in Nat's name at the University of Virginia where he taught for 22+ years.

Is there really $90 Million worth of gold, silver and jewels buried somewhere in Bedford County, Virginia? This is the story of the three ciphertexts originating from an 1885 pamphlet called The Beale Papers, detailing treasure being buried by a man named Thomas J. Beale in a secret location in about 1820. Amateur treasure hunters, mathematicians, and even the NSA have been trying (and failing) to crack these codes ever since. Grace and peace to you! I'm Rev. Joe Cailles, the newest pastor here at Peakland. I've been watching these Trusting in God devotions for several weeks now and am delighted to share this time with you. I have a question to begin with. Where is my home? I know exactly where I live, but I don't know the name of the neighborhood I live in. There seems to be a variety of opinions. My zip code ends in 1, but not 01, so I don't live in the 01. My mailing address is Forest, but I live in Campbell County, and Forest is in Bedford County, right?

Tune in to the ACHS event on Race and Sports tonight at 7 p.m. (Zoom registration)Status hearing held for new lawsuit seeking House of Delegates election this NovemberThe state of Virginia has until June 24 to file a motion to dismiss a new lawsuit that seeks the Commonwealth to hold an election for the House of Delegates this year. Richmond resident Jeffrey Thomas Jr. filed a federal suit in the Eastern District of Virginia last week that picks up similar arguments made by Richmond attorney Paul Goldman for why some think the House districts currently in place are unconstitutional. Goldman’s suit was dismissed for lack of standing nearly a year after he filed. Thomas and representatives from the Virginia Attorney General’s office were in court yesterday for a status update in the case. Judge David Novak issued an order requiring both parties to file a joint stipulation of facts by June 17. Thomas will have eight days to respond to whatever the state of Virginia files. The state will have five days to respond. No date has been set for another hearing. For more information, read coverage in the Virginia Mercury. Albemarle County releases climate vulnerability assessmentOne item on tomorrow’s agenda for the Albemarle Board of Supervisors is a 176-page document that identifies how the county and its residents will be affected by shifting weather patterns. The Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment looks ahead to how extreme heat, drought, wildfires, and flooding may affect the area. There’s also the threat a changing climate will bring new pests that will affect crops. (read the document)The assessment is a step toward developing a climate resilience plan.“Some of the changes are unavoidable and even while we try to mitigate and reduce the severity of climate change, we also need to prepare for some of those impacts,” said Gabe Dayley, Albemarle’s climate protection coordinator. Dayley said the climate action plan is intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to meet regional goals to be carbon neutral and fossil free by 2050. He made his comments on the Let’s Talk podcast produced by Albemarle’s communications and public engagement department. “Our vulnerability and risk assessment looks at the kinds of specific local weather changes that we can expect,” Dayley said. “Things like increasingly intense and long heat waves or sudden and more severe rainstorms that lead to flash flooding.” Visit the county’s website to hear more. The report was put together with support and work from the Piedmont Environmental Council. In disclosure, that group is a sponsor of the Week Ahead newsletter. Water-powered grain mill in Nelson gets support from AFID grantThis is Ag Week in Virginia, and Governor Glenn Youngkin has announced the latest recipients of the state Agriculture and Forestry Industry Development grant program. The program provides matching grants to small agricultural producers such as Potter’s Craft Cider which used a $50,000 grant as part of a package to move operations into Neve Hall off of U.S. 29 in 2019. This time around the grants focus on infrastructure. Nelson County requested financial assistance for Deep Roots Milling to upgrade a water-powered grain mill built in the late 18th century. According to the press release, the $22,500 in state funds will help pay for a new sifting room and new bagging equipment. Other recipients include $25,000 for Piedmont Processing of Gordonsville in Orange County to add more cooling space for its slaughterhouse, $25,000 for barge to serve a collective of oyster farms in Northampton County, and $9,000 for a commercial kitchen expansion in Bedford County. They have developed both a constrained plan that would anticipate around $26 million funds that might be generated through becoming a regional transportation authority with taxation power, as well as one that assumed funding would be found to increase the frequency of service. That has an estimated $70 million price tag. The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors had their review on June 1. “These concepts are here to help you imagine and understand what kind of outcomes are available at two different levels of investment,” said Scudder Wagg of Jarret Walker + Associates. This work will be completed before a second study will begin on how transit operations should be governed in the future.“So this transit vision study really is identifying the potential improvements to the regional transit system and establishing that long term goal and plan vision and the governance study is really what are the steps to get to that vision that we’ve defined,” said Tim Brulle of AECOM. He’s the project manager for the vision plan. The idea in both visions is to increase how often buses move through the community. “Frequency means freedom effectively,” Wagg said. “The more frequent service is, the much shorter the wait is, the much likelier you are to get somewhere soon.”Wagg said at the moment, around 60 percent of residents of urban Albemarle and Charlottesville are close to some transit service, but only about 15 percent are close to frequent service. Both visions expand the number of areas covered by on-demand service where people can call for service on the same day. Currently, a ride on Jaunt has to be booked a day in advance. But in general, the plan without identified funding would increase service. The unconstrained vision would seek to increase fixed-route service to seven days a week from morning into the evening. “One of the key things that is likely to significantly improve access to opportunity, particularly for people who work in retail, service, and hospital jobs where many people have to work evenings and many people have to work Sundays,” Wagg said. “Those types of jobs where if you aren’t there for them on Sunday, they have to have a car and therefore have to incur the high costs of owning a car.” Supervisor Ann Mallek is the sole elected official left from an effort in the late 2000’s to create a regional transit authority. She wanted to make clear the community tried once before for a sales tax to fund increased transit, but a referendum did not make it out of the General Assembly. “Money doesn’t just appear when we don’t have the authority to raise it,” Mallek said. Supervisor Ned Gallaway said service along urban corridors in his district needs to be frequent to accommodate the new units that have been approved during his tenure, such as the Rio Point project that got the okay last December. He pointed out proponents argued transit could help mitigate traffic congestion.“Over a thousand units, 1,300, 1,400 units that are going to build out there, and if they’re sitting on a sixty-minute transit line, that’s not going to work,” Gallaway said. Gallaway said the on-demand transit pilot that Albemarle will begin next year will go a long way to helping determine what the county needs.Supervisors Bea LaPisto-Kirtley and Diantha McKeel had already seen the presentation because the Jefferson Area Regional Transit Partnership got a briefing in late May. McKeel wanted clarification on the role the University of Virginia Transit System would play in the vision. “We tend to think about UVA as doing their own thing,” McKeel said. “That’s what they’ve done for years with their students and faculty and staff. Having said that, I know they are working really hard with us at the regional transit partnership about coming together on transit in this community.” Wagg said that the unconstrained vision anticipates more involvement by UVA. “There is an obvious and enormous transit demand within and around a university and the Grounds at UVA needs really a high frequency service within a pretty limited space so it is understandable they run their own service,” Wagg said. Wagg said an idea in the unconstrained vision is to trade resources with UVA. For instance, a Bus Rapid Transit system similar to the Pulse in Richmond could travel down U.S. 29 and terminate somewhere on Emmet Street. “And then the University could run a more community service that serves the Grounds as a primary focus but also serves the community at large,” Wagg said. Charlottesville City Council had their review on June 6. The presentation was much the same as what Albemarle and the Regional Transit Partnership saw, but Wagg repeated why having to wait on a bus that comes once an hour is an obstacle.“Relying on service every 60 minutes is extremely hard,” Wagg said. “You can think about relying on a 60 minute route is a little bit like if there was a gate at the end of your driveway that only opened once an hour. You had best be in your car with your coffee ready to go at 7 a.m. if you need to get out at 7 a.m. to get to work. And if you miss it, then you are not leaving until 8 a.m.” Wagg reminded Council that many of the current CAT routes do not operate on Sunday. City Councilor Brian Pinkston said the unconstrained vision is compelling and certainly appeared to be more attractive. But he expressed some skepticism. “This would be a great system to enact but how do we change behavior such that people would use it?” PInkston said. Wagg said if people have choices about how to get around, they’ll take transit. “A major reason people don’t take transit today is because it’s very unlikely to be useful to the trip they want to make,” Wagg said. For instance, Wagg said a trip from Pantops to the Piedmont Virginia Community College would take a very long time with multiple transfers. “Changing that dynamic of ‘will someone choose to ride’ is making it far more likely that the trip that they look up will be reasonably competitive to take transit,” Wagg said. Vice Mayor Juandiego Wade said he was concerned that outreach efforts have not been robust.“I’m just afraid that you may get input from the same people and we kind of know what it is,” Wade said. “We’ve got to do a better job of getting input. I can tell you if this is all you’re going to do, I can assure you of what we’re going to get.” Extra service will mean extra drivers, and Councilor Michael Payne said their needs must be taken into consideration up front. “We can drop any plans or changes we want but if we don’t have sufficient drivers to run those routes, it won’t work,” Payne said. “I know we’re already seeing significant problems in being able to maintain frequency of our current routes because of a shortage of bus drivers.” Payne is another member of the Regional Transit Partnership. He said the unconstrained vision should be a goal, but a realistic approach needs to be taken. “How do we, once this is finalized, bring it back down to earth and figure out what are the level of investments we need to specifically plan for here in the city and what are the specific steps needed to start to get Jaunt, [Charlottesville Area Transit], and the University Transit Service working together to move to that Regional Transit Authority?” Payne said. And that’s where the governance study would come in. If there was to be a regional authority, that could also include surrounding counties. The Greene County Board of Supervisors gets their review of the plan tonight, and its the Fluvanna Board’s turn on Wednesday. The next step is a virtual meeting on June 23 in which the consultants will present both the constrained and unconstrained visions. There’s also a community survey that seeks to gather input on the unconstrained and constrained visions. What do you think? No use telling me. Where Crisis and Christ Collide Jennifer Sienes Is it possible for God to take our “mess” and turn it into a message? I would have to say, “Absolutely! That's my life story!” Amen! So many people today are having issues. Issues in life. Issues in their family. Issues in business. Sometimes it can get hectic and seem out of our control. But if we are honest, the Lord is still speaking to us. He is urging us to “turn it over to Him.” He can handle it, I guarantee it. But there are some that can put these events, these emotions and these feelings into stories. Stories that rivet us to the character and allow us to see things through the eyes of another. By doing so, the allow the Lord to reach a part of our soul that can then shed some light on our issues. This is what our guest today has been able to accomplish with her writings. Jennifer Sienes was born to write. But she put it off. For years. She became a teacher and enjoyed that work, but the love and calling of writing never left her. When her daughter suffered a terrible accident that caused her to go through months of rehab due to a traumatic brain injury, her marriage falling apart and several other personal tragedies, she began writing. Today, she is the author of several contemporary women's fiction and romance books, but has now transitioned into romantic suspense novels. Through her tragedies, God has given her a gift that allows her to develop her characters and write with emotion that bridges the gap between the written page and the readers heart. Help me welcome to the program, Jennifer Sienes! Jennifer, thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to come visit with us today! First question, other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Jennifer Sienes?” You were called to write for many years before you actually took the plunge. You became a wife, mother, teacher – why didn't you pursue writing even on a part time basis back then? Your daughters accident, you say, was basically your wake-up call to finally pursue writing. What is the book, https://amzn.to/3tno6Jq (“Illusions”) about? Tell us about your book, https://amzn.to/3aQmmSM (“Providence…”) Your first series was “Apple Hill.” Correct me if I'm wrong, but these books were contemporary women's fiction and romance. But now, you are transitioning into “romantic suspense” novels? Why the change? You use your life experiences to create you books and characters. Can you explain a little of how that works and some examples? Who is “Tess O'Shay?” You're a believer. You love the Lord. How does that message come through your work as a writer? What are some of the take-aways you want you want your readers to gain by reading your books? I believe the series you are currently working on is “Bedford County.” In fact, you published the first book in that series https://amzn.to/3O8e7Qt ((Night Songs)). Can you explain the background for the series, “Bedford County?” What does the future hold for your writing? As I was preparing for this interview, there was one thing I found that I just had to ask you about. I need to know about the inspiration you receive from Gracie and Einstein? Jennifer, this has been so interesting. To hear the inspiration and back story to some of your works. How can someone order your books? Are they on Amazon? If someone has a question or would like to get in touch with you, maybe to do an interview like this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? I'll put links to all of that down in the show notes below. Folks, sometimes we need to let our imaginations take over in order to guide us through the daily turmoil in our lives. Jennifer Sienes books help you to do just that, but also keeps the core message relevant throughout the books. I urge you to drop down into the show notes below and order some of her books right now. Order the entire series
Is it possible for a person to be consumed by a fire, with no trace of evidence found to support it? Is it possible that 2 people die in the same fire, but no evidence of either is found? That is the question we'll be tackling today in episode 10 as we delve into the lives of Chloie Leverette and Gage Daniel. Chloie, was nine and her half-brother Gage, was 7 at the time that they both disappeared on September 23, 2012. 2 children whose remains were not found in the rubble with their deceased grandparents. What happened that bizarre and fateful night almost a decade ago? And most importantly, where are Chloie and Gage today? This is a cold case, but it is still an open investigation. The TBI has not given up. Please contact them with any relevant tips. Chloie Leverette was 9 years old, and Gage Daniel was 7 when they disappeared from their grandparent's farmhouse on the evening of September 23, 2012. Their grandparents, Molli and Bubba, both perished in the house fire. It is strongly believed that the children did not die in the fire. There are age progressed photos available that I will post. Please keep an eye out and reach out if you have any clue as to where Chloie and Gage could be today. If you or anyone you know has information about this case, contact the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-824-3463 or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678. The TBI would especially be interested in talking to anyone who was in the area of Kingdom Road in Bedford County on September 23 or 24, 2012. In this episode, Anne bakes up a delicious Strawberry Swirl Pound Cake. The recipe calls for Almond Extract and Kill Vanilla. Anne deviates and uses yummy strawberry jam. Karen recounts a double murder in Bedford County, VA, which is near Lynchburg, VA. Then, Anne gives us the terrifying murders by the Dating Game Killer, Rodney Acala, whose victims are vast and there are still more out there unidentified. The case Karen covers in Virginia is the Haysom Murders where a rebellious University of Virgina freshman and her college boyfriend plot the demise of her parents simply because she is spoiled and wants her way. The sisters don't agree with the name given to the Dating Game Killer because he was only on one episode and even though he won, the woman who picked him had the sense to not actually go on a date with him. They do agree that boob biting is never acceptable in any scenario. They respectfully pay homage to Robin Samsoe, who was an unfortunate victim of Rodney Acala, but it was her murder that led to the solving of many others that actually got Rodney tried and convicted, even though there are many victims of his that are still unidentified. Investigators found over 900 pictures of his victims, but cannot release them because of the violence depicted of his torturing them in the pictures. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of April 4, 2022. This revised episode from May 2013 is part of a series this year of episodes related to trees and shrubs. MUSIC – ~ 16 sec – Lyrics: “Lost my fingers in the Galax mill, Buddy sing a sad old song; And my heart got broke in the yew pine hills, Lordy my time ain't long.” This week, we feature music about some historical aspects of a natural-resource industry that's been important to Virginia's economy for hundreds of years and also plays an important role in managing the Commonwealth's water. Have a listen for about 30 more seconds.MUSIC – ~31 sec – Lyrics: “I started out to loggin' when I was in my prime, Woman don't you weep for me; Hitchin' up the spruce to the big drag lines, You damned old piney mountain; Where the skidders start a-buckin' as the years come down, Buddy sing a sad old song; Makin' God's own thunder on the new-cut ground, Lordy my time ain't long.” You've been listening to part of “Piney Mountains,” by Bruce Molsky on his 2013 album, “If It Ain't Here When I Get Back,” from Tree Frog Music. The song was written by Craig Johnson, a highly-regarded string-band musician who died in North Carolina in 2009. Focusing on one logger-turned-millworker's tragic accident in a Galax, Virginia, mill, the song weaves in several aspects of the history of the forest industry in the southeastern states: hard work and rough leisure by loggers, opportunities and risks of working in sawmills and furniture factories, economic ups and downs of resource-based industries, changes to landscapes after land uses change, and a rich heritage of traditional music. With a complex history, forest use and management in Virginia remains of vital economic and ecological importance, including for water resources. As the Virginia Department of Forestry has stated, quote, “In addition to lumber, paper, and a host of other products, forests provide benefits called ‘ecosystem services,'” unquote. Those services include air quality, water quality, soil conservation, outdoor recreation, wildlife habitat, carbon storage, and scenic beauty. As of 2017, over 16 million acres in Virginia—about 62 percent of the state—were covered by forests, and those forests provided an estimated $30 billion annually in economic benefits, considering both forest products and ecosystem services. At the same time, forest-related work can still be hazardous, as it was for the narrator in this week's music. Logging, for example, typically has higher workplace injury and fatality rates than other occupations. With connections and impacts like these, piney mountains and other wooded landscapes will continue to influence Virginia's economy, culture, wildlife, air, and water. Thanks to Bruce Molsky for permission to use this week's music, and we close with about 15 more seconds of “Piney Mountains.” MUSIC – ~ 16 sec – instrumental. What do The Pilgrim's Progress, Letter from Birmingham Jail, and The Letter to the Philippians all have in common? They were all written during a lockdown. John Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim's Progress from a prison in Bedford County, England, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote Letter from Birmingham Jail from a prison cell in Alabama, and the Apostle Paul wrote Philippians under house arrest in Rome. All three of these individuals leveraged their lockdown, and this is our topic as we conclude our teaching series from the book of Acts. So, whether you've been with us from the beginning or joining us for the first time I look forward to being with you as we learn from the Apostle Paul how to make the most of our lockdown-like moments.
When it comes to calf care and management, you don't get a redo. In this episode of “Cow-Side Conversations,” Greta Halahan & Virginia Deffibaugh from Singing Brook Farms in Bedford County, Pa. share how they get their calves off to a good start and how important it is to define your protocols to ensure excellence from the very beginning. With cold weather making respiratory issues more common in calves, they also explained how they combat the cold and commit to weight gain through colostrum management.
On April 3, 1985, Derek and Nancy Haysom were found dead in their home in Bedford County, Virginia. On this episode of Common Mystics Jennifer and Jill head to the state of Tennessee. When they're led to a haunted Confederate cemetery in Shelbyville, all is not what it seems. Who are the soldiers buried in the Willow Mount Cemetery? What do they want to say? And why were the sisters reluctant to give these restless souls a voice??? Follow Jennifer and Jill on their journey of discovery to the 1860's, to Shelbyville in Bedford County, TN. Learn why the sisters' views of the Confederate fighters were challenged and ultimately changed. You just might find a different view as well.
