180,000 Reasons to Care: The Growing Need for Food Assistance

Record Numbers Shatter Post-Pandemic Expectations Six years after the pandemic first disrupted American life, a troubling trend emerges across rural Virginia. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank now serves approximately 180,000 people every month—a staggering 39,000 more than the pandemic's peak. Les Sinclair, the organization's Communications and PR Manager, reveals this sobering reality during a recent conversation on The Valley Today with host Janet Michael. Initially, food bank officials believed the pandemic would represent the worst crisis they'd ever face. When government assistance programs temporarily lifted many families out of poverty, demand dropped slightly to around 141,000 monthly visits. However, this optimism proved short-lived. "We thought the numbers would never go up beyond the pandemic max," Les explains. "That just didn't pan out." Instead, inflation took hold with devastating consequences. While prices soared across every sector, wages failed to keep pace. Consequently, more working families find themselves unable to afford basic necessities, forcing them to seek food assistance for the first time in their lives. A Massive Rural Footprint The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank operates across an impressive territory that spans 25 counties and eight cities throughout Virginia. Stretching from Winchester and Frederick County in the north to beyond Lynchburg and Bedford County in the south, the organization covers approximately 12,000 square miles—roughly the size of Maryland or one-third of Virginia's total area. To manage this vast region effectively, the food bank maintains four strategic warehouse locations. Their headquarters sits in Verona, just outside Staunton, while additional distribution centers operate in Winchester, Charlottesville, and Lynchburg. Notably, the Winchester facility alone serves Frederick, Clarke, Fauquier, Warren, Shenandoah, Page, and Rappahannock Counties, including the densely populated Loudoun County. Moreover, the organization represents a groundbreaking experiment in food banking. When founded in 1981, most food banks concentrated on urban areas where dense populations made distribution easier. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, however, pioneered rural food distribution—a critical distinction since nine out of ten food-insecure Americans live in rural communities rather than urban centers. The Partnership Model That Makes It Work The food bank functions as a sophisticated logistics operation, partnering with Feeding America nationally and hundreds of local food pantries regionally. Les compares their role to a Walmart warehouse, buying food by the truckload and storing massive quantities. Meanwhile, local pantries like Winchester CCAP serve as the "customer-facing" locations, directly distributing food to families in need. This partnership proves essential for reaching scattered rural populations. "We couldn't do what we do without them," Les emphasizes. "They couldn't do what they do without us." Furthermore, the organization sources food from diverse channels. Retail grocers contribute 36% of donations through partner pickup programs, where pantries collect excess inventory directly from stores like Food Lion, Kroger, and Giant. Additionally, the USDA provides government-purchased food from American farmers, while large manufacturers donate products with misprinted labels or excess inventory. Local and regional farmers also contribute fresh produce to the network. The Grocery Store Challenge Recently, however, the retail partnership faced unexpected pressure. During October and November, and again during winter snowstorms, consumers cleared grocery store shelves completely. When stores have no excess inventory, they have nothing left to donate. Compounding this challenge, grocery chains have become remarkably efficient at predicting demand. Using AI technology, they now anticipate that shoppers will buy strawberry Pop-Tarts before storms and adjust inventory accordingly. While this efficiency benefits retailers and consumers, it reduces the surplus available for food banks. Simultaneously, USDA food supplies have dropped 30% year-over-year, forcing the food bank to purchase more food directly. Although they cannot fully replace the high-quality proteins and vegetables the government typically provides, they continue prioritizing nutritious options for their partner pantries. Shattering Misconceptions About Food Pantry Users Perhaps the most persistent myth surrounding food insecurity involves who actually needs assistance. Many people assume food pantry visitors are simply lazy and should "get a job." The reality, however, tells a dramatically different story. Most people seeking food assistance are working. They're trying to improve their lives but living on financial margins so thin that a single unexpected expense creates crisis. In fact, more than a quarter of the food bank's guests visit only once per year—they simply need help getting over a temporary hump. Les shares the story of a convenience store worker who injured her wrist on the job. Unable to work while waiting for workers' compensation, she has zero income and cares for a paralyzed son. She's not lazy—she's injured, uninsured temporarily, and desperately trying to survive until she can return to work. Even when workers' compensation arrives, it typically covers only 70% of regular wages and takes considerable time to process. For families living paycheck to paycheck, missing even one payment creates cascading financial disasters. The Government Shutdown Ripple Effect Currently, partial government shutdowns compound these challenges. Federal workers, particularly TSA agents, continue reporting to work without paychecks. They still pay for childcare, gas, and other necessities, but many receive payment only monthly—making it extraordinarily difficult to stretch resources from one paycheck to the next. Contrary to popular belief, landlords cannot always wait patiently for delayed rent payments. Many landlords depend on rental income to pay their own mortgages. When a tenant misses a $2,000 rent payment, the landlord must still cover their mortgage. Moreover, the economic impact extends far beyond government employees. When federal workers stop dining out, restaurants lose business. Wait staff lose tips. Restaurant owners order less food from suppliers like Sysco. Truck drivers haul fewer loads. The entire economic system suffers. Sarah Cohen of Route 11 Chips experienced this firsthand. During COVID and government shutdowns, her sales to DC cafes plummeted because federal workers weren't coming to the office for lunch. These ripple effects reach deep into Virginia's economy, affecting businesses and workers far from the capital. The Impossible Choice: Heat or Eat Winter brings particularly cruel dilemmas for struggling families. Les recently spoke with William, a roofer injured on the job who lives in a mobile home with his dog, Cocoa. Unable to afford heating, William and Cocoa "just sort of curl up" together while he waits for surgeries that will allow him to return to work. Another woman caring for three disabled grandchildren faces $400 monthly electric bills. With both she and her husband experiencing serious health issues and the children's parents out of the picture, they constantly struggle with the impossible choice between heating their home and feeding their family. These aren't isolated cases. Across the food bank's service area, families regularly face this devastating decision. When $600 heating bills arrive after cold snaps, many choose to keep the lights on and visit food pantries to feed their families. Food as Medicine: A Holistic Approach The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank takes a progressive stance on nutrition, viewing food as medicine rather than mere sustenance. They prioritize fresh produce, which comprised 30% of their distribution last year, because they understand that proper nutrition helps people thrive. Nutritious food keeps medical bills down across entire communities. Children pay better attention in school when properly nourished. People can manage chronic illnesses and diseases through better nutrition. Conversely, when families can only afford high-calorie processed foods, they face increased health risks despite consuming adequate calories—debunking the myth that overweight individuals cannot be food insecure. Additionally, access to food reduces stress, which itself functions as a health intervention. When people live on the edge of a financial cliff, they cannot make good long-term decisions. They're too focused on simply not falling. However, when food security removes one major stressor, families can step back from that precipice and begin making better choices for their futures. Quality Food for Everyone Another common misconception suggests that food bank offerings are somehow subpar. In reality, the food distributed through this network maintains high-quality standards. While well-meaning donors sometimes contribute items like ramen noodles during food drives, the bulk of distributed food comes from retail grocers, USDA programs, and direct purchases of nutritious items. The food bank specifically prioritizes produce because people crave fresh fruits and vegetables. Although produce represents one of the most expensive food categories—often making it a luxury for families on tight budgets—the organization believes everyone deserves access to healthy, nutritious food regardless of their economic circumstances. How Communities Can Help Fortunately, community members have multiple ways to support this critical mission. Volunteering provides valuable assistance, and notably, many food bank guests themselves volunteer, giving back to the community that supported them during difficult times. Financial donations prove particularly effective. Just $1 helps provide more than three meals, meaning $10 supplies a month of meals for someone in need, while $100 provides 300 meals. The food bank's purchasing power and logistics expertise amplify every dollar donated. Beyond time and money, advocacy matters tremendously. Currently, the Federation of Virginia Food Banks—representing all seven food banks across the state—works to promote "food as medicine" initiatives with the state legislature. Community members can support these efforts through the food bank's website at BRAFB.org/actnow or BRAFB.org/getinvolved. Finally, social media engagement amplifies the message. Following the food bank's social media accounts, resharing posts, and commenting helps spread awareness that hunger relief remains an urgent community need. Finding Help When You Need It For individuals and families currently struggling with food insecurity, Les offers an important message: "You're not alone, and we are here with you. We are here to walk with you through this challenge in your life." The food bank's website features an easy-to-use food finder tool. Visitors to BRAFB.org can click "Find Food," enter their address, and immediately see all nearby pantries with contact information, open hours, and everything needed to access food quickly. Alternatively, Virginians can call 211 for phone-based assistance connecting them with local resources. A Community Responsibility As this conversation reveals, food insecurity affects far more people than most realize—one in nine people across the food bank's service area. These aren't strangers or statistics; they're neighbors, coworkers, and community members facing temporary crises that could happen to anyone. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank stands ready to help, but they cannot do it alone. Through partnerships with local pantries, support from community donors and volunteers, and advocacy for systemic solutions, the organization continues fighting to ensure everyone has enough to eat. In Janet Michael's words, it's "a responsibility I do not take lightly"—and neither should any of us.

Extension Office Friday: Meet Cynthia Fairbanks

A Local Returns to Serve Her Community The Northern Shenandoah Valley welcomes a familiar face to its agricultural community. Cynthia Fairbanks, a Clarke County native who grew up on her family's farm in Berryville, has returned home to serve as the new agricultural extension agent based in Warren County. Moreover, her role extends across the entire five-county region, filling a critical position that has remained vacant since the passing of Corey Childs. On her very first day, Cynthia joins host Janet Michael and fellow agent Karen Poff on The Valley Today to introduce herself to the community. Despite having been on the job for less than eight hours, she radiates enthusiasm for the work ahead. From 4-H Member to Extension Professional Cynthia's journey to this position began in her own backyard. Growing up, she actively participated in 4-H and FFA, showing steers, goats, and pigs while her family operated a small cow-calf operation. Additionally, she raised meat goats throughout high school to sell. This early passion for livestock led her to Virginia Tech, where she initially pursued dairy science. However, she soon discovered that her interests lay more in the business side of agriculture than the science side. Consequently, she transitioned to agricultural economics, ultimately earning both her bachelor's and master's degrees in the field. "I really enjoyed the business side of education more than the science side," Cynthia explains during the conversation. The Internship That Changed Everything During her undergraduate years, Cynthia interned with the Frederick County Extension Office for two summers. This experience proved transformative. She worked alongside various agents, including Karen, gaining exposure to everything from financial programming to master gardener initiatives. "I was not aware of all the different opportunities while I was in 4-H myself," Cynthia admits. "It truly was a learning curve getting to see all of the different opportunities." That internship solidified her career path. When the Warren County position opened, she didn't hesitate. In fact, she and her fiancé moved from Bedford County, putting a new house under contract in just four days. Filling a Critical Gap Cynthia brings something unique to the table: expertise in agricultural economics. As Karen points out, the region hasn't had a farm business management specialist since Bill Whittle retired. While Cynthia serves primarily as an animal science agent, her current knowledge of agricultural economics addresses a significant need in the farming community. Furthermore, her master's work focused on incorporating data into farming practices. Her final project involved forecasting Virginia corn prices over five years in relation to climate change. This technical expertise, combined with her coding skills, positions her to help farmers make data-driven decisions about their operations. "Being able to take previous data and kind of forecast what that's gonna look like" represents just one of the valuable services she can provide, Cynthia notes. Building Relationships and Assessing Needs Rather than immediately launching new programs, Cynthia plans to spend her first year listening. She intends to attend events, shadow other agents like Elizabeth Baldwin in Page County, and most importantly, survey the community to understand what farmers and producers actually need. "I don't wanna spend a lot of time on something that really isn't going to be quite effective to my audience in this area," she explained. "I wanna be as effective as possible by really getting the resources directly from the people that I'm going to be helping." Nevertheless, she's already brainstorming ideas. During her first day, she discussed implementing an embryology program with the local 4-H agent, drawing on her recent experience hatching chicks. The Advantage of Local Roots Being from the area gives Cynthia a distinct advantage. She already has established relationships throughout the five counties she serves. This familiarity with the region's agricultural landscape will help her hit the ground running. "There's a lot of perks with that," Cynthia acknowledged. "Getting to already have some relationships developed in these five counties that I'll be serving... will really help with this position." Janet emphasizes another benefit: "It's going to be great that you came into this, not necessarily knowing all of the extension things, so you're gonna be in a much better position to be explaining to people, oh no, but we also do this." Training and Professional Development Despite her impressive credentials, Cynthia faces a steep learning curve. In March, she'll attend a two-day agricultural agent onboarding at Virginia Tech, where she'll meet her cohort of new agents. Additionally, she'll participate in bimonthly training sessions at various agricultural research and extension centers across Virginia. These training opportunities excite Karen, who noted that agents get to visit facilities specializing in everything from fruit research to seafood production. "When you're in school, it's a lot of book work and not as much getting to see, touch, feel, and taste what practical applications are like," she observed. Continuing Essential Programs While Cynthia develops new initiatives, she'll also help maintain existing programs. These include pesticide recertification courses and spring drinking water clinics. Furthermore, she'll assist with general agricultural questions, even filling in for master gardeners during their off-season. As Karen reminded listeners, extension agents embrace the philosophy of "I don't know, but I'll find out." This approach proves essential because agricultural science constantly evolves. Karen recalled how recommendations about salmonella in eggs changed dramatically during her tenure, teaching her to preface answers with "from what we know today." An Open Door Policy Cynthia encourages community members to reach out through multiple channels. They can call the Front Royal office at 540-635-4549, email her at cynthia2000@vt.edu, or follow the Northern Shenandoah Valley Agriculture Natural Resources Facebook page. The office maintains regular hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Warren County Government Center. "I am here to stay and I'm very excited to be here," Cynthia declared, music to Karen's ears after years of position turnover. Looking Ahead As Cynthia settles into her new role, she represents a new generation of extension agents—one that combines traditional agricultural knowledge with modern data analytics and business acumen. Her local roots, combined with her fresh perspective and technical skills, position her to serve the Northern Shenandoah Valley's agricultural community for years to come. For farmers and producers throughout the region, her arrival signals renewed capacity and fresh opportunities. Whether they need help with farm business planning, livestock management, or simply identifying a mysterious bug, Fairbanks stands ready to serve as their connection to Virginia Tech's vast research resources. Indeed, extension's mission continues: bringing university research to the people who need it most, one farmer, one question, and one community at a time.

on that Day: A Trilogy by Thomas Fitzhugh Sheets"on that Day" is a trilogy of books written without knowing how it all would end: Book #1: “The Death of The Promise,” Book #2: “The Resurrection of The Promise,” and Book#3: “The Land of The Promise.” The common theme of the trilogy was witnessing the faith of the First-Century Church, as demonstrated in the Parable of The Ten Virgins. The five wise virgins lived in anticipation and preparation for the groom, while the five foolish virgins were locked out. Paul's view of this faith is expressed in 2 Timothy 4:7–8. In Ephesians 4, Paul instructs teachers and preachers to bring unity of The Faith in The Body of Christ. Faith in The Second Coming and the awarding of eternal life fulfill the Promise of resurrection made to Abraham. Salvation is not awarded to anyone prior to this event but is a promise until Jesus' return and cannot be possessed this side of the grave. The author declares that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, and the perishable cannot inherit the imperishable.Thomas Fitzhugh Sheets is a seventy-six-year-old semi-retired businessman who, while never attending college, has had a reasonably successful career. He now lives at Providence Farm in Bedford County, Virginia, and has a beef cattle operation, raising calves for the feeder market. During discussions with a friend, a retired pastor, and a marine chaplain who has decided that he is “done with the church,” Tom was challenged to write a book. His friend understood his ongoing frustration with both the message and direction of the established church and felt that many others shared this frustration. Tom, who has a heart for the lost within the church, believes that the church has been hijacked by the instant-gratification crowd. Thus, he felt that he was challenged to address this issue, and as a result of this challenge, The Road to Restoration, The Death of the Promise, and The Resurrection of The Promise were developed.https://www.amazon.com/that-Day-Thomas-Sheets/dp/1959761382https://www.onthatday-timothy2468.com/http://www.ReadersMagnet.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/12723tfsrm.mp3

EEEP! Tangles and Tinsel by Jennifer Sienes Why didn't her life get the memo regarding Christmas being about peace on Earth and goodwill to men? For the first Christmas in years, Kimberley Saint John may actually get that peace on Earth she's been dreaming of. Daddy has been sober for going on two years (a record), and if he stays that way, she might have a chance for a life of her own. Maybe even a family. And between you, her, and the fence post, she'd love it if that family included her childhood friend Jax Jenson and his kids. Except he's still mourning the loss of his wife. Jax doesn't understand why no one has snatched up sweet, beautiful, and funny Kim. Then again, the way she carries hurt and betrayal around like battle gear might have something to do with it. And he is not knight-in-shining-armor material. His wife could've told her that. Kim's dreams are shattered when Mama shows up, after a twenty-year absence, sending Kim into a tailspin of worry for her daddy. Desperate, she turns to the one man who gets her—Jax. What will it take for Kim and Jax to untangle emotions that keep them from trusting in God's sovereignty and find purpose through the pain? On July 17th, 2023, Bedford County, Tennessee, and its county seat of Shelbyville lost their 149-year-old newspaper of record, the Times-Gazette, as Holler Media locked the doors and fired the staff of all six community publications they owned that served counties around Nashville. Within a matter of just a few weeks, Morristown, Tennessee-based Lakeway Publishers, who owns and operates nine other community newspapers in the state plus others in Missouri and Virginia, had hired a number of the Holler staff. They also announced they were starting two new publications — The Bedford County Post and The Marshall County Post — to provide news coverage to the Shelbyville and Lewisburg, Tennessee areas. In a recent interview, Lakeway Senior Vice President Keith Ponder stated, "As Shelbyville's long-time newspaper closed abruptly, we saw a need to serve the community with locally produced community-based journalism. We kept the team together and have worked hard to tell the stories of Bedford County. A great community needs a great community newspaper, and we want to meet that need here — just like we have in Tullahoma for nearly 50 years. We have a strong tradition of service while producing award-winning work.” “I can't stress enough that we were devastated when these communities were left without a newspaper,” said Michael Fishman, president of Lakeway Publishing. "And being in the adjoining counties in this region, it just felt that we had the resources and the experience to return a local newspaper to these communities. News deserts — we're totally opposed to that happening," Fishman said. "And while we can't go all over Tennessee, by any means, we were founded on providing quality, local journalism to communities so they would have news and information. And we also feel a lot that it supports the economic vitality of that community to have a good local newspaper." In this episode of E&P Reports, we go beyond reporting on news publishers by focusing on the impact on a population when they learn they may lose their newspaper of record. Appearing in this interview and speaking about the value of local journalism as it affects the people and public policy of their community are Bedford County, Tennessee's Chris White, director of planning, Greg Vick, county commissioner for District 2 and Curt Cobb, county clerk & master.

A Pennsylvania man, Derek Louk, has entered a guilty plea for third-degree murder in the killing of his cousin, Tyler Matthai, last year. The incident involved a gruesome cover-up attempt, which included burning the victim's body with the assistance of his estranged girlfriend and another individual.  The guilty plea was made in Bedford County Court and was accompanied by an admission of guilt for abuse of a corpse.  According to Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry's press release on Thursday, Derek Louk, not only confessed to fatally shooting Matthai on April 26, 2022, but also revealed his involvement in conspiring with two others to burn the victim's body and conceal the crime.  "Beyond pulling the trigger, the defendant orchestrated a scheme to obliterate the evidence - the victim's remains," Henry stated. "This plea signifies an acknowledgment of responsibility for these heartless acts of violence and disregard for human life."  Louk's accomplice in the cover-up, Courtney S. Boden, identified as the estranged girlfriend of the victim, received a sentence of 2¼ to 12 years in prison after admitting her involvement in burning the body and attempting to cover up the crime. Another individual, Jordon Robertson, has also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.  The events unfolded on April 26, 2022, when Louk allegedly used an AR-15 rifle to shoot Matthai twice, claiming self-defense after Matthai entered his residence and forcefully took Boden to a car waiting outside. Louk then allegedly dragged Matthai's lifeless body to a hole in his yard, buried it under tires, doused it in kerosene, and ignited it, maintaining the fire for approximately six hours while he slept.  According to Louk, he and Boden had a seven-year friendship since his relocation to Bedford County. The court documents revealed that Matthai and Boden had a history of abusive behavior in their relationship.  Louk recounted that Matthai forcefully entered his home, took Boden from the living room, and placed her in the back seat of her car. Louk retrieved his AR-15 rifle and shot Matthai in the arm and, subsequently in the back. He asserted that he verified Matthai's death by checking for a pulse on multiple occasions. Louk then proceeded to bury Matthai's body in a makeshift grave on his property and set it ablaze with kerosene.  Louk disclosed that the fire burned for six hours while he slept, and the following morning, he covered the burnt remains with soil. Authorities were alerted to the situation by a relative, who claimed that Boden had mentioned Matthai's drug use and aggressive behavior that night. According to the relative's testimony, Boden informed them that Louk had warned Matthai to stop his violent behavior or face consequences, leading to Louk allegedly shooting him.  Boden reportedly told the witness she attempted to stem the bleeding, but Matthai overdosed and died. She confessed to disposing of the body and belongings in an undisclosed manner, obliterating all traces of the victim. She further attempted to cleanse bloodstains from a vehicle and sell the murder weapon.  Louk's plea agreement stipulates a prison term of 15 to 30 years. The sentencing is scheduled for September 22.  Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Twelve authors, twelve novels, one sizzlin' summer! What's not to love? I don't know about you, but usually, when someone says they're turnin' up the heat this summer, I picture someone who needs a nice padded room somewhere. This time, however... I'm all in. Literally. I mean, Lisa Phillips sent an email asking if I wanted to be a part of a twelve-author, three-box set series, and it was a no-brainer for me! With authors like Lisa, Sara Blackard, Liz Bradford, Cara Putman, Kari Trumbo, Jennifer Pierce, Katy Lee, Michelle Aleckson, Lynn Shannon, Rebecca Hemlock, and Emilie Haney, how could the series not be a heap of fun? Listen in to learn what to expect and to find out about fun giveaways coming your way! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Why Are Avid Suspense Readers Looking Forward to Summer Heat? Because Summer Heat offers a summer full of fast-paced stories that'll keep you fanning the pages of that book to find out what happens next! (read with the AC on maybe...) Many of our authors have set their books in the worlds that their readers are already familiar with. Lisa Phillips has hers in her Bedford County series. Mine is the prequel to The Agency Files, and so forth. So... if you don't know anything about an author or their series/world... well, you've got an inexpensive way to find out. But how long will he stay around? Everyone else in her life leaves, why not him? Especially when her past creeps up on her in the form of a previous arrestee coming to town and making threats. Can she trust Will to stick around? And how serious are those threats? Will Cooper always dreamed of becoming a detective. Not that he'll admit that to anyone, especially Zara. Not when he's content enough being a uniformed officer instead. Why take the risk of failure? But when Zara finds out he's abandoned his dream, her own fears of abandonment rise up between them. Is this something they can overcome or will fear—and outside threats—destroy what they have? As the threats turn into a break-in at Zara's house while she's gone, she's left to wonder what the invader will do if he comes back? Can she trust Will to help protect her, or will he abandon her to face this alone? Ascending Hope - Sara Blackard Emmy's thirst for adventure takes her to new heights in Ascending Hope, a heart-stopping romantic suspense by Sara Blackard. As a product tester for a top mountaineering equipment company, Emmy's latest test is a perilous climb up a dangerous Alaskan mountain with her enigmatic boss, Bradley. As they face the sizzling heat and treacherous conditions, their attraction ignites, but the mountain has other plans. Will their love survive the deadly journey, or will their pasts come back to haunt them? Find out in this thrilling page-turner that's sure to leave you breathless. Runaway - Jennifer Pierce Ryan McGregor is on the run from a deadly family and hiding out in a small town thanks to extended family he's never met. Bethany Wilkinson always comes second but now she's number one on a hit list. Bethany will have to risk it all on a runaway and her faith in the plan God has for her if she's going to stay alive. After a disastrous breakup, one last job—on a cruise—will give her the cash to take charge of her future. Peter wants to make full operative at Vanguard Security. A ransom note left in her apartment tells Christina Depalo that changing her name and hiding in the big city hadn't been enough to escape her dangerous family. The Morans have kidnapped her roommate, demanding Christina return to Georgia. But that will mean facing the cutthroat attorney Marcus Cartwright, a man she once loved but who only wanted to take down her family. Marcus had started a coalition with his friend to crack down on organized crime in Savannah. Nobody will derail him this time. But then Christina never was a nobody. Induction - Chautona Havig Someone wants her dead. Not happening on his watch. When Ramon Simon goes missing, the small town of Fairbury burns with rumors hotter than the sidewalk in July. They're certain he's either left his wife, or she killed him (not that they'd blame her). As the weeks pass and the police fail to find answers, things heat up more when Anna Simon disappears, too. If that's not strange enough, the chief of police orders his officers to leave Anna out of their investigation. As a new recruit into a secret protection service known only as The Agency to the few who know it exists, Keith Auger doesn't know what he's doing, but he's determined to do his new job well. But when he finds himself guarding a woman before he's fully trained, he already begins to doubt the wisdom of this career path. Pressure mounts as Keith tries to stay one step ahead of the men out to kill Anna and another step ahead of Anna who is determined to find answers no one will give her. The podcast went on the road (with a special guest) to Charlottesville, Va. this week to talk to Margie Howell. Margie grew up on a dairy and beef farm in Bedford County, Va. near the area that is now best known for Smith Mountain Lake. She had typhoid fever when she was 10 and admittedly said was lucky to have survived. She attended Mary Washington and UVA and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She met husband Nat Howell at a conference and that would start them on an adventure neither expected. Nathaniel Howell would start a career with the Foreign Service that would eventually lead to a call from President Reagan to be the U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait from 1987- 1991. Nat was the ambassador during Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. During Nat's twenty-six year foreign service career, Margie raised their two boys Chip and Edward, completed a masters degree and was a college professor. Paul said at the end that Margie had lived a fascinating life! They finished by talking about her family and how she is working on establishing an endowment in Nat's name at the University of Virginia where he taught for 22+ years.

Where Crisis and Christ Collide  Jennifer Sienes Is it possible for God to take our “mess” and turn it into a message? I would have to say, “Absolutely! That's my life story!” Amen! So many people today are having issues. Issues in life. Issues in their family. Issues in business. Sometimes it can get hectic and seem out of our control. But if we are honest, the Lord is still speaking to us. He is urging us to “turn it over to Him.” He can handle it, I guarantee it. But there are some that can put these events, these emotions and these feelings into stories. Stories that rivet us to the character and allow us to see things through the eyes of another. By doing so, the allow the Lord to reach a part of our soul that can then shed some light on our issues. This is what our guest today has been able to accomplish with her writings. Jennifer Sienes was born to write. But she put it off. For years. She became a teacher and enjoyed that work, but the love and calling of writing never left her. When her daughter suffered a terrible accident that caused her to go through months of rehab due to a traumatic brain injury, her marriage falling apart and several other personal tragedies, she began writing. Today, she is the author of several contemporary women's fiction and romance books, but has now transitioned into romantic suspense novels. Through her tragedies, God has given her a gift that allows her to develop her characters and write with emotion that bridges the gap between the written page and the readers heart. Help me welcome to the program, Jennifer Sienes! Jennifer, thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to come visit with us today! First question, other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Jennifer Sienes?” You were called to write for many years before you actually took the plunge. You became a wife, mother, teacher – why didn't you pursue writing even on a part time basis back then? Your daughters accident, you say, was basically your wake-up call to finally pursue writing. What is the book, https://amzn.to/3tno6Jq (“Illusions”) about? Tell us about your book, https://amzn.to/3aQmmSM (“Providence…”) Your first series was “Apple Hill.” Correct me if I'm wrong, but these books were contemporary women's fiction and romance. But now, you are transitioning into “romantic suspense” novels? Why the change? You use your life experiences to create you books and characters. Can you explain a little of how that works and some examples? Who is “Tess O'Shay?” You're a believer. You love the Lord. How does that message come through your work as a writer? What are some of the take-aways you want you want your readers to gain by reading your books? I believe the series you are currently working on is “Bedford County.” In fact, you published the first book in that series https://amzn.to/3O8e7Qt ((Night Songs)). Can you explain the background for the series, “Bedford County?” What does the future hold for your writing? As I was preparing for this interview, there was one thing I found that I just had to ask you about.  I need to know about the inspiration you receive from Gracie and Einstein? Jennifer, this has been so interesting. To hear the inspiration and back story to some of your works. How can someone order your books? Are they on Amazon? If someone has a question or would like to get in touch with you, maybe to do an interview like this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? I'll put links to all of that down in the show notes below. Folks, sometimes we need to let our imaginations take over in order to guide us through the daily turmoil in our lives. Jennifer Sienes books help you to do just that, but also keeps the core message relevant throughout the books. I urge you to drop down into the show notes below and order some of her books right now. Is it possible for a person to be consumed by a fire, with no trace of evidence found to support it? Is it possible that 2 people die in the same fire, but no evidence of either is found? That is the question we'll be tackling today in episode 10 as we delve into the lives of Chloie Leverette and Gage Daniel. Chloie, was nine and her half-brother Gage, was 7 at the time that they both disappeared on September 23, 2012. 2 children whose remains were not found in the rubble with their deceased grandparents. What happened that bizarre and fateful night almost a decade ago? And most importantly, where are Chloie and Gage today? This is a cold case, but it is still an open investigation. The TBI has not given up. Please contact them with any relevant tips. Chloie Leverette was 9 years old, and Gage Daniel was 7 when they disappeared from their grandparent's farmhouse on the evening of September 23, 2012. Their grandparents, Molli and Bubba, both perished in the house fire. It is strongly believed that the children did not die in the fire. There are age progressed photos available that I will post. Please keep an eye out and reach out if you have any clue as to where Chloie and Gage could be today. If you or anyone you know has information about this case, contact the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-824-3463 or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678. In this episode, Anne bakes up a delicious Strawberry Swirl Pound Cake. The recipe calls for Almond Extract and Kill Vanilla. Anne deviates and uses yummy strawberry jam. Karen recounts a double murder in Bedford County, VA, which is near Lynchburg, VA. Then, Anne gives us the terrifying murders by the Dating Game Killer, Rodney Acala, whose victims are vast and there are still more out there unidentified. The case Karen covers in Virginia is the Haysom Murders where a rebellious University of Virgina freshman and her college boyfriend plot the demise of her parents simply because she is spoiled and wants her way. The sisters don't agree with the name given to the Dating Game Killer because he was only on one episode and even though he won, the woman who picked him had the sense to not actually go on a date with him. They do agree that boob biting is never acceptable in any scenario.  They respectfully pay homage to Robin Samsoe, who was an unfortunate victim of Rodney Acala, but it was her murder that led to the solving of many others that actually got Rodney tried and convicted, even though there are many victims of his that are still unidentified. Investigators found over 900 pictures of his victims, but cannot release them because of the violence depicted of his torturing them in the pictures. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of April 4, 2022.  This revised episode from May 2013 is part of a series this year of episodes related to trees and shrubs. MUSIC – ~ 16 sec – Lyrics: “Lost my fingers in the Galax mill, Buddy sing a sad old song; And my heart got broke in the yew pine hills, Lordy my time ain't long.” This week, we feature music about some historical aspects of a natural-resource industry that's been important to Virginia's economy for hundreds of years and also plays an important role in managing the Commonwealth's water.  Have a listen for about 30 more seconds.MUSIC – ~31 sec – Lyrics: “I started out to loggin' when I was in my prime, Woman don't you weep for me; Hitchin' up the spruce to the big drag lines, You damned old piney mountain; Where the skidders start a-buckin' as the years come down, Buddy sing a sad old song; Makin' God's own thunder on the new-cut ground, Lordy my time ain't long.” You've been listening to part of “Piney Mountains,” by Bruce Molsky on his 2013 album, “If It Ain't Here When I Get Back,” from Tree Frog Music.  The song was written by Craig Johnson, a highly-regarded string-band musician who died in North Carolina in 2009.  Focusing on one logger-turned-millworker's tragic accident in a Galax, Virginia, mill, the song weaves in several aspects of the history of the forest industry in the southeastern states: hard work and rough leisure by loggers, opportunities and risks of working in sawmills and furniture factories, economic ups and downs of resource-based industries, changes to landscapes after land uses change, and a rich heritage of traditional music. With a complex history, forest use and management in Virginia remains of vital economic and ecological importance, including for water resources.  As the Virginia Department of Forestry has stated, quote, “In addition to lumber, paper, and a host of other products, forests provide benefits called ‘ecosystem services,'” unquote.  Those services include air quality, water quality, soil conservation, outdoor recreation, wildlife habitat, carbon storage, and scenic beauty. As of 2017, over 16 million acres in Virginia—about 62 percent of the state—were covered by forests, and those forests provided an estimated $30 billion annually in economic benefits, considering both forest products and ecosystem services.  At the same time, forest-related work can still be hazardous, as it was for the narrator in this week's music.  Logging, for example, typically has higher workplace injury and fatality rates than other occupations. With connections and impacts like these, piney mountains and other wooded landscapes will continue to influence Virginia's economy, culture, wildlife, air, and water. Thanks to Bruce Molsky for permission to use this week's music, and we close with about 15 more seconds of “Piney Mountains.” MUSIC – ~ 16 sec – instrumental. What do The Pilgrim's Progress, Letter from Birmingham Jail, and The Letter to the Philippians all have in common? They were all written during a lockdown. John Bunyan wrote The Pilgrim's Progress from a prison in Bedford County, England, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote Letter from Birmingham Jail from a prison cell in Alabama, and the Apostle Paul wrote Philippians under house arrest in Rome. All three of these individuals leveraged their lockdown, and this is our topic as we conclude our teaching series from the book of Acts. So, whether you've been with us from the beginning or joining us for the first time I look forward to being with you as we learn from the Apostle Paul how to make the most of our lockdown-like moments.
