Meet the Woman Reuniting Eaton Fire Survivors With Lost Treasures The fierce Santa Ana winds that whipped the Palisades and Eaton fires into deadly infernos also spared precious things you'd think would have been the first to burn: old family photos, children's art work, postcards, even pages of old sheet music. Those things sometimes blew across neighborhoods, and people are still finding them as fire cleanup continues. Reporter Steven Cuevas introduces us to an Altadena resident who has made it her mission to return these fragile paper keepsakes to their owners. Home on the Grange: In Anderson Valley, Hippies, Old-Timers Return to Farming Roots Grange halls have been around for more than 150 years, and today there are more than100 of these meeting places in California alone. The Grange began as a fraternal organization for farmers. Even though farming and Grange membership are down to a fraction of what they were decades ago, many rural towns still rely on Grange halls as community centers. For her series California Foodways, Lisa Morehouse visits the Anderson Valley Grange, where many residents credit this place for bringing together groups of people that were once divided. Imagine stumbling across a shipwreck… in the middle of a desert! Sounds impossible, right? But that's exactly what happened with the long-lost Bom Jesus, a 500-year-old treasure ship that vanished off the coast of Africa and somehow ended up buried under sand in Namibia. Turns out, the ship got caught in a storm, sank, and over time, shifting sands swallowed it up, hiding its gold, ivory, and ancient artifacts for centuries. When diamond miners finally uncovered it, they found chests full of gold coins—basically a real-life pirate movie moment! Who knew the desert could hide a ship full of treasure? For tonight, I tell you the stories of different "lost treasures" and other legends attached to:1- The Knights Templar, a religious military order that emerged during the Crusades but became so wealthy and influential that it made powerful enemies;2- The Cathars, a Christian sect from the 12th to 14th Centuries in Southern France and Northern Italy, which was persecuted until it disappeared;3- The Fabergé Eggs, exquisite pieces of jewelry that were made for the Romanovs in Saint Petersburg in the decades before the Russian Revolution. Out of more than fifty, six eggs are now missing, but as the story of the "Third Imperial" egg indicates, they could maybe reappear one day. With over 300 million books sold, Louis L'Amour is one of the bestselling authors of all time. All 120 of his books remain in print. But the greatest story L'Amour ever penned was his own. He spent the early part of his life traveling in a circus, working as a lumberjack and miner, circling the world as a seaman, winning over 50 fights as a professional boxer, and serving in WWII.Today on the show, I talk about both the personal and professional aspects of Louis' life with his son, Beau L'Amour. We discuss some of Louis' adventures and the autodidactic education he gave himself by way of a voracious reading habit. We then turn to how Louis got started as a writer and how he cut his teeth writing for pulp magazines before breaking through as a Western novelist and becoming a blockbuster success in his sixties.Resources Related to the PodcastLouis L'Amour works mentioned in the show:Education of a Wandering Man: A MemoirHondoYonderingNo Traveller ReturnsThe Walking DrumLast of the BreedLouis L'Amour's Lost Treasures, Volume 1 and Volume 2"Holding Her Down" by Jack LondonAoM Article: How and Why to Become a Lifelong LearnerAoM Article: The Libraries of Famous Men — Louis L'AmourConnect With Beau L'AmourThe Louis L'Amour websiteBeau's website
