Much has been discussed of Paul McCartney's love of what John Lennon called "granny music." The music of his parents' generation, British Music Hall, Vaudeville, Tin Pan Alley...you know the genre...the stuff Lennon loved to complain about when it came from Paul, but seemingly had no problem with his favorite group, Nilsson, whos stock and trade was the song tradition rooted in that era. Paul, however, loved, and still loves, music and art from that time. It gives him a chance to embody the character pieces he so easily writes, putting himself in the shoes of Fred Astaire and getting to pretend he's someone other than Paul McCartney. Honey Pie also has roots in trad jazz, and Lennon obviously knew a thing or two because he pulls off a spot-on Django Reinhardt impression on his guitar solo. Personally, I love this side of Paul, "Honey Pie," "You Gave Me The Answer," "Martha My Dear," I'll take it all! Returning to the show this week is the always wonderful Dr. Christine Feldman-Barrett, author of the brilliant book A Women's History of the Beatles and the newly released "The Life, Death, and Afterlife of the Record Store." She joins us from all the way across the world in Brisbane where we chat about appreciating legacy artists in all their eras, what record stores mean to her, the cyclical nature of culture, and an exciting round of Beatles trivia! Be sure to pick up a copy of her book at the links above or anywhere you get good books! What do you think about "Honey Pie" at #93? Too high? Too low? Or just right? WHAT A CONCEPT!OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE by Small Faces (1968, Immediate)You recognize the famous, round, Victorian, snuff tobacco tin cover? It was designed by Nick Twedell and Pete Brown, and announced to Acid heads everywhere that this album was going to be a trip to be reckoned with, and it did not disappoint. Thought by many to be the first Rock n Roll concept record, Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake was the premier British, hot house musical flower from that psychedelic garden, mixing British Music Hall with rocking blues - a recipe that also worked marvelously for Ray Davies and The Kinks. The Artful Dodger-esque ditty Lazy Sunday, brayed by future Humble Pie frontman Steve Marriott, became the big hit, and the album went to #1 in the UK. Side two is dedicated to a single, 19 minute, fairy tale opus, “Happiness Stan”, narrated by comedian Stanley Unwin in his own nonsense language. It recounts the story of a boy named Stan who goes looking for the other half of the moon when it's on the wane. He rescues a house fly that grows to enormous size, able to transport Stan to the place where he learns the meaning of life. Fanciful? But, of course, and delivered in an insouciant Cockney manner, abetted by processed vocals, keyboards, and guitars. Captain Billy has already covered The Faces with Rod Stewart, which showcases them as an unparalleled R and B outfit, but this thing was the apex of psychedelic “High” Art” - but, never taking itself too seriously. Ps: There was some controversy stirred up by genius entrepreneur manager-producer Andrew Loog Oldham, when he published an ad for the record which parodied The Lord's Prayer - just another aspect of its hallucinogenic conception.

Hey all you cool cats and mussel pullers….I hope you can be tempted to squeeze in some time to listen to episode 122 of Love That Album Podcast. For this month’s episode, I am joined again by guitarist Shane Pacey to talk about Squeeze. This is the band that has over its history combined hook-laden melodies with tales of human frailty and surviving difficult circumstances. You can smile and dance to the music before you realise, “Hey, that’s a song about infidelity / domestic violence / being arrested for stealing because you can’t afford to feed your unborn child”…..oh and they wrote a song about masturbation (but it wasn’t the one I thought it was for a long time). Nominally, we tasked ourselves with delving into the band’s third long player, Argybargy. However, as is customary at LTA Headquarters, we spent a lot of time discussing Squeeze as an entity as well as the record under focus. Were Difford and Tilbrook really the new Lennon and McCartney of their day? Could their songs have worked in the twenties around the piano in an old British Music Hall environment? What were Butlins holiday camps? All these questions and many more are skirted around on this episode. You can download the show from Spotify, Stitcher or iTunes (search for “Love That Album podcast”) or from the website at http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com. Once again, my huge thanks go to Shane for taking the time out to join me on the show and giving “some old chat”. You can (and should) check out his brand of blues at either https://shanepaceytrio.com.au or at https://bondicigars.com/. If you like Bert Jansch, Shane has a great new album called The Gardener available at https://shanepacey.bandcamp.com/album/the-gardener which would definitely have been approved of by the great man. Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum. If you’d consider writing an iTunes review or recommending the show to a friend, we’d be immensely grateful. If you enjoy what you hear, please tell a friend or ten to tune in.
