On this episode of Talking Guitars, we explore an incredible collection of rock and roll history now up for auction through Backstage Auctions. This remarkable lineup of instruments—once owned, played, or modified by legends like Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, and Keith Richards—is expected to fetch a combined total of more than $1.5 million. One of the standout pieces is a Don Musser acoustic guitar reportedly used by Eddie Van Halen during the recording of Balance and Van Halen III, and heard on tracks such as “Take Me Back,” “Without You,” and “Neworld.” The auction also features Eric Clapton's 1974 Fender Stratocaster, later gifted to Ronnie Lane of the Small Faces, as well as Keith Richards' 2005 Duesenberg Starplayer Outlaw, a unique birthday gift to Ian McLagan, complete with a striking custom pearl mosaic finish and chrome skull knobs. Adding a touch of Hollywood nostalgia, the auction includes a Gibson acoustic guitar used during the filming of Viva Las Vegas, starring Elvis Presley. Also featured is McLagan's customized 1965 Fender Telecaster, fitted with a Stratocaster neck and later used by Steve Marriott to record Small Faces classics like “Tin Soldier” and “All or Nothing.” With many items coming from the estate of Ian McLagan, this auction represents a rare opportunity for collectors and fans to own a true piece of rock and roll history.

Small Faces-Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake (Immediate Records) Release Date- May 24, 1968 Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake (1968) stands as the creative peak of the Small Faces and one of the most distinctive albums of the psychedelic era. Recorded in London at Olympic and Trident Studios and produced by Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, the album blends R&B roots, British music-hall humor, hard rock energy, and imaginative studio experimentation. The first side features a set of diverse songs—from the soulful power of “Afterglow (Of Your Love)” to the playful Cockney pop of the hit single “Lazy Sunday,” which reached No. 2 in the UK. The second side presents the whimsical “Happiness Stan” suite, a surreal narrative narrated by Stanley Unwin that follows a character searching for the missing half of the moon. With its innovative circular sleeve inspired by tobacco tins and its adventurous concept structure, the album reached No. 1 in the UK and remained there for six weeks. Though the original lineup soon dissolved, Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake remains Small Faces' most imaginative and enduring achievement. (S5-EP11)

The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded

It’s been over a decade since I last spoke to Steve Ellis, and it felt like no time had passed at all. That’s the thing about Steve, he just pulls you straight back in. The prompt for this catch-up was his latest release, Love Affair – Edinburgh Live 1995. The story of how it came to exist, a phone call at 7pm asking if they could record a live album that same night, is pure Steve Ellis. From there we tumbled into his soul and Motown roots, the mod scene, and his deep connection with Steve Marriott and the Small Faces. Then there’s the legendary Eros fountain stunt – the arrest and how it helped send ‘Everlasting Love’ to number one. On the solo front, we cover his friendship and collaborations with Paul Weller and Roger Daltrey. And as a parting shot, Steve reveals a new album is in the bag, and by the sound of it, well worth the wait. The United States may have an official day of gratitude every November with Thanksgiving, but for many of us, most every day could be a day of appreciation. A sincere "thank you" is rewarding for everyone: It feels good to say it and it feels good to hear it. However, appreciation can be complicated and "thank you" may come with a twist. Sometimes we're grateful (in hindsight, at least) for the lessons we've learned from difficult people. Sometimes we feel generalized happiness for family and/or friends. Sometimes we're just thankful to no one in particular that we're happy for no reason in particular. And of course sometimes expressions of gratitude are just a cover for dark feelings. In this episode of "How We Heard It" your hosts sift through an array of old and new songs that directly or indirectly express gratitude. Artists include Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, The Kinks, Sly and the Family Stone, The Beatles, Big Star, Natalie Merchant, Taylor Swift, Bob Hope, Elton John, Louis Armstrong, Rihanna, Gwen Stefani, The Beach Boys, Backstreet Boys, Alanis Morissette, James Taylor, Small Faces, Kool & the Gang, U2, Spice Girls, Boyz II Men and many more. Humble Pie is often overshadowed by bands like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Queen, but they were a considered a "supergroup" when they formed in 1969-- fronted by Steve Marriott from the Small Faces and Peter Frampton from The Herd. Their first 2 albums are a mixed bag, but by the time they signed with A&M Records in 1970 they had refined their style down to a bluesy, hard-rockin' sound. Rock On (1971) was their most successful album to date and features "Stone Cold Fever", which is itself a stone cold classic. "OCD" The Ohio-bornTamar Berk first showed up on my radar in the mid-90s when she sang for the iChicago outfit Starball. Starball were a really great band and they worked with everyone from Material Issue to Steve Albini and their Holstein Park record remains one of my favorite records of the '90s. Tamar's solo output now numbers five fabulous albums like The Restless Dreams Of Youth, Good Times For A Change her new one, OCD,. Weaned on everyone from Liz Phair to the Small Faces, Berk's new album is scruffy blast of melodic indie rock that's doused in reverb put together with vulnerability and honest and coated with some of the most unforgettable choruses you'll hear all year. Now based in San Diego, Berk is on a creative tear, which actuall ties into her new album's title. The compulsive need to create--and this is something I think most artists understand--can bring on a version of OCD that can inform the work, sure, but it can also be a nagging voice that relies on patterns to be silenced. We talk about all of that, and so much more; she's real and honest and funny and sharp and you're going to love her. www.tamarberkmusic.com https://tamarberk.bandcamp.com/merch www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoem) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) www.bombshellradio.com

Rock On (1971) was their most successful album to date, and features "Stone Cold Fever" -- which is itself a stone cold classic. What can I say about the Small Faces that hasn't already been said? Not much honestly. I'm not a Small Faces junky.  But I do love their music. In fact, in my earliest mod days I think I preferred them to The Who. It's been said that The Who was a band that became mods, but the Small Faces were mods who became a band. I was looking for some covers of Small Faces songs when I realized how few there really are out there. Compared to the hundreds of covers of The Who, The Kinks, The Stones and other British invasion acts of the 60s, I was shocked at just how few people have covered their songs over the years. And amongst those, fewer still ones that are really any good. I've gathered here a double handful that I think fit the bill and do the group justice. In this episode, we explore the life and career of Kenney Jones, the legendary drummer who played a crucial role in shaping the sound of British rock music during the '60s and '70s. From his early days with The Small Faces, through the raucous years with The Faces, to his tenure with The Who, Jones's rhythmic prowess and adaptability made him a sought-after musician in the evolving rock landscape.Born in Whitechapel, London, Kenney Jones grew up immersed in the vibrant music scene of post-war Britain. Influenced by the burgeoning British Invasion, Jones was drawn to the energetic rhythms of bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, as well as the soulful sounds of American R&B. His early exposure to these genres laid the foundation for his distinctive drumming style, characterized by a blend of precision and flair. In 65, Jones co-founded The Small Faces alongside Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, and Jimmy Winston. The band quickly became emblematic of the Mod movement, delivering hits like "Itchycoo Park," "Tin Soldier," and "All or Nothing." Their music, a fusion of psychedelic rock and soulful melodies, resonated with a generation seeking a fresh, dynamic sound.Jones's drumming provided a solid backbone for the band's intricate arrangements. The Small Faces' influence extended beyond their music, impacting fashion and youth culture in '60s Britain. The departure of Steve Marriott in '69 marked a turning point for the band. The remaining members—Jones, Lane, and keyboardist Ian McLagan—joined forces with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood, both from the Jeff Beck Group, to form The Faces. The Faces quickly gained a reputation for their electrifying live performances and unpretentious style. Albums like "A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse" and "Ooh La La" captured their energetic spirit and musical prowess. Rod Stewart's simultaneous solo career, particularly the success of "Every Picture Tells a Story" and the hit single "Maggie May," brought additional attention to The Faces. However, this dual focus eventually led to tensions within the group. The Faces' blend of rock, soul, and blues, combined with their charismatic stage presence, earned them a devoted fan base. Tracks like "Stay with Me," "Cindy Incidentally," and "Ooh La La" became anthems of the era, showcasing the band's versatility and Jones's dynamic drumming.Despite their success, internal tensions and the members' individual pursuits led to the band's dissolution in '75. In '78, following the death of drummer Keith Moon, Jones was invited to join The Who. His tenure with the band included contributions to albums like Face Dances and It's Hard, as well as performances at significant events such as Live Aid in '85.While his drumming style differed from Moon's, Jones brought a steady, reliable rhythm to the band's music during a period of transition. His professionalism and experience were invaluable assets to The Who during this time.Beyond his musical endeavours, Jones authored an autobiography titled "Let the Good Times Roll: My Life in Small Faces, Faces, and The Who", providing an in-depth look at his life and career. Kenney Jones's contributions to music have been recognised with inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of both The Small Faces and The Faces. His influence continues to inspire musicians and fans alike, ensuring his legacy endures in the annals of music history.Join us as we delve into the remarkable journey of Kenney Jones, exploring his impact on British rock music and the enduring legacy of The Small Faces, The Faces, and The Who. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to his story, this episode offers a comprehensive look at one of rock's most influential drummers.#thesmallfaces #thefaces #thewho #britishinvasion

PART 2 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. This 2-part BEST OF ROCKBUSTERS Compilation is based on the comprehensive 6-part ROCKBUSTERS compilation of every Rockbuster segment from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show (released previously). CHAPTERS: Cilla Black, Small Faces, New Order (0:00) Bryan Ferry, Del Amitri, Chris de Burgh (8:02) Tony Bennett, The Darkness, Adam Faith (17:25) Alex Parks, Aztec Camera, Phil Collins (24:45) Gareth Gates, Texas, Delta Goodrem (31:45) Nik Kershaw, Soft Cell, OutKast (36:14) The Divine Comedy, Electric Six, Erasure (42:50) Courtney Love, The Bravery, The Monkees (48:31) Donovan, Yoko Ono, McFly (56:16) Lisa Stansfield, The Buggles, Amy Winehouse (1:03:26)

In todays episode of the podcast I speak with 'Rock and Roll - Hall Of Fame inductee' - Mr Kenney Jones. Kenney is a British drummer/musician who rose to fame in the 60's as part of the famous 'mod scene' with his group 'The Small Faces', eventually went on to play alongside Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart in 'The Faces' and even took up the drum position in 'The Who', after the unfortunate passing of original drummer Keith Moon. In addition to backing some of the biggest names on the planet - including Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Jeff Beck. In the eary 90's, Kenney also went on to form 'The Law' with Bad Company frontman, Paul Rodgers and even has an excellent book out called 'Let The Good Times Roll', which you can get via his website linked below. Joni Mitchell called it “stoking the star-maker machinery behind the popular song”. Every record sent out for review used to come with a press release knocked together by an over-excited PR before terms like “psychedelia” or “prog” had been invented. They were scanned once for the odd fact or quote and usually chucked in the bin. Richard Morton Jack has tracked down scores of these handouts from 1962-1972, and the news stories they sparked, and published them in the sumptuous ‘Pressing News', a fascinating window into how acts were sold in the days when pop stars liked rump steak, sports cars and “sincere people” but disliked “bad music, traffic wardens and people who say I look like a girl”. We leaf through his book here and talk about …. ... the ingenuity of '60s PRs and why Marc Bolan was a turning point.… Robert Plant and David Bowie's genius for self-promotion.… the pop hopeful whose favourite tipple was tooth-rotting, crystal-based ‘Creamola Foam'.   … how PRs sold rebels and outsiders.   … a £900 Olivia Newton-John press release. … Beta Male pin-ups Nick Drake and Scott Walker. … confected outrage over the Small Faces' Lord's Prayer. … Joe Cocker, eternally a gas-fitter from Sheffield with “a face like the back of a Sheffield Corporation bus”. … mysterious pop acts that never made it like the Virgin Sleep, the Accent, Bread Love & Dreams, Fresh Maggots and the Tickle whose songs were supposedly chosen by computer.  .. the Kinks – “four art students who dress like characters from Dickens”.  … the promotion of pre-psychedelia Pink Floyd – “a lyrical atmosphere whose words express a feeling rather than tell a story.” … “the Zombies have 50 GCSE passes between them!” and other press release fiction trotted out in the papers. … the mass 1966 adoption of the kaftan and Charlie Chan moustache. Order copies of Pressing News here:https://lansdownebooks.com/products/pressing-newsFind out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
