Is Steelers fan frustration at all-time high? Art Rooney II's philosophy stale? Guy Junker weighs in

On his new Saturday podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey welcomes longtime Pittsburgh sports broadcast and current Pirates public address announcer Guy Junker to tackle a range of topics. They start with fan frustration surrounding the Steelers. Is it at an all-time high after eight years without an NFL playoffs win? Has owner Art Rooney II's philosophy worn thin with his hardcore customers, particularly with regard to coach Mike Tomlin and the stability he represents? What can be done to fix the defense that faltered down the stretch, despite the presence of highly paid stars like T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Patrick Queen and Alexi Highsmith? And what should happen at the QB position? Should GM Omar Khan pick the veteran presence of Russell Wilson? The mobility of Justin Fields? Or someone else entirely via the NFL draft or free agency? Our duo tackles those questions, then reflects on Guy's long career; his work with colleagues including Stan Savran and Bob Pompeani; and his many years on the popular Sportsbeat show. Later, Jason and Guy reflect on the latest with the Pirates and Penguins. Who's most to blame for the Penguins' recent struggles? Is it the Fenway Sports ownership group that has failed to live up to the success Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle had here? Is it past GMs including Jim Rutherford and Ron Hextall, whose moves are still hurting the roster today? Is it current GM Kyle Dubas and his disastrous deal with goalie Tristan Jarry? Or is it coach Mike Sullivan's inflexible game plans? And how will the franchise handle star Sidney Crosby moving forward. On the Pirates side, what we can expect from them in 2025? Can Ke'Bryan Hayes stay healthy at 3B? Does Oneil Cruz still have more upside, particularly as a power threat at the plate? How good can the young pitching staff led by Paul Skenes, Jared Jones and Mitch Keller be? And how can manager Derek Shelton fix this team's problems with fundamentals?

Peter walks the Gwartney team through an interesting article purporting to answer this very question. Along the way they touch on haute cuisine, cinema, centerfolds, and punk rock.

Celebrated for bringing depth and nuance to roles ranging from a drug-addicted art dealer (High Art, Lisa Cholodenko, 1998), to a dying mother meeting her daughter for the first time (Monica, Andrea Pallaoro, 2023), Patricia Clarkson is no stranger to complex emotional terrain. Perhaps that is why she feels somewhat comfortable in the volatile world of A Woman Under the Influence, John Cassavettes' 1974 masterpiece. The film centers around Mabel Longhetti, brilliantly rendered by Gena Rowlands, as a deeply loving, profoundly unstable housewife and mother of three. We explore the extraordinary power and nuance of Rowland's performance, the layered collaboration of Cassavettes, Rowlands, and Falk, and learn the extent to which the film was indeed a family affair. Prior to Lee's controversial cancellation, his paintings have won awards from George Washington University, the Korean Artists Association, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the inaugural title of 'Artist of the Year' by the Eileen Kaminsky Family Foundation. Often regarded as the Artist of the Manosphere or the counterculture painter, Lee's hasty success in the NYC art industry was abruptly halted after his public stance against radical Leftism and his declaration of Christian art as the peak of aesthetic culture in the West. Prior to developing his passion for painting, Lee was a Division One athlete who placed in the US Tae Kwon Do Nationals for three consecutive years and continues to deliver this martial intensity into his dynamic style. The resulting compositions attest to an artist who uses his entire body to paint symbolically evocative works that contain oblique references to our definitions on masculinity, aesthetics and reverence. Luminous colors, gestural expressionism, and philosophical acumen bring a refreshing sentiment to the one-sided art industry that draws our sometimes compartmentalized and fractured times into a synthetic, representative whole. In a time when the mainstream narrative is shamelessly mocking the religion of Christ, Lee has currently launched a powerful Biblical Series of epic proportions titled From Creation to Resurrection—twelve large-scale, visually stunning paintings to revitalize Christianity. Upon its completion, Arthur will be embarking on a visual exhibition tour across our country specifically targeting the most woke and degenerate cities to walk further into the belly of the beast.

Hip Hop has been traditionally viewed as a substantively weak genre yet it has produced culturally thought provoking music like "F da police" by N.W.A. and lyrically dense tracks like "N.Y. State of mind" by Nas. On this episode Kennedy and Josh are joined by Jeremy Brown who earned a music and education degree and teaches high school choir. Jeremy joins the conversation to give his input on the topic and aid us in explaining that hip hop might be a more substantive genre than most assume.

Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. CRAIG WEDRENCraig Wedren first gained notice as the dynamic, multi-octave-wielding frontman of Shudder to Think. With its eccentric song structures and complex time signatures, Shudder to Think would prove a significant influence on math rock, post-hardcore, and emo. Since the band wound down in the late-'90s, Wedren has released a series of solo albums and related collaborative projects, and his music has become an essential part of some of film and television's most popular and lauded shows. Beginning with the soundtracks for the late-'90s films High Art and First Love, Last Rites along with his Shudder to Think bandmates, Craig's composing resume has gone on to include extensively working with director Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right) and David Wain (Role Models, Wet Hot American Summer). Wedren would go on to create evocative, decidedly contemporary scores for cultural-touchstone films and television series including The School of Rock, Laurel Canyon, Reno 911!, GLOW (Netflix), Fresh Off the Boat (ABC), Shrill (Hulu), New Amsterdam (NBC) and, most recently, the wildly popular Showtime series YELLOWJACKETS. ANNA WARONKERAnna Waronker is a composer, songwriter, singer and artist. Well known as the front woman and songwriter for the Los Angeles based band that dog., Anna has taken her unique melodic and harmonic sensibility and personal lyrical wit into composing for film and television. Notable scores and soundtracks include the limited series adaptation of Tegan & Sara's best-selling memoir, High School (FreeVee), Shrill (Hulu) with whom she co-composed with Craig Wedren, I Love That For You (Paramount+ with Showtime), the animated series Harriet The Spy (Apple), the cult classic Josie And The Pussycats, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, and many more. Anna has also worked in theater as a composer penning the music, book and lyrics with Charlotte Caffey (Go-Go's) for Lovelace A Rock Opera (The Hayworth Theater, Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and songs and score for a musical adaptation of Hit The Wall and Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner's The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (Los Angeles LGBT Center/Davidson/Valentini Theatre). As a singer, performer and recording artist, Anna has produced and released two solo albums and four albums with that dog., most recently the critically acclaimed Old LP (UMe) in 2019. Recently, Anna has been busy working on the third season of Call Me Kat (Fox) and the young adult mystery School Spirits (Paramount+). Anna is currently working on the second season of the Emmy nominated and Critic's Choice winner Yellowjackets (Paramount+ with Showtime) with Craig Wedren. The duo write and perform a very unique and celebrated score. For season two of Yellowjackets, Anna and Craig have written an original song that features Hedwig and the Angry Inch's John Cameron Mitchell and collaborated with Alanis Morrisette on an alternate version of their Hollywood Music in Media Awards winning main title of Yellowjackets entitled “No Return.”

WHAT A CONCEPT!OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE by Small Faces (1968, Immediate)You recognize the famous, round, Victorian, snuff tobacco tin cover? It was designed by Nick Twedell and Pete Brown, and announced to Acid heads everywhere that this album was going to be a trip to be reckoned with, and it did not disappoint. Thought by many to be the first Rock n Roll concept record, Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake was the premier British, hot house musical flower from that psychedelic garden, mixing British Music Hall with rocking blues - a recipe that also worked marvelously for Ray Davies and The Kinks. The Artful Dodger-esque ditty Lazy Sunday, brayed by future Humble Pie frontman Steve Marriott, became the big hit, and the album went to #1 in the UK. Side two is dedicated to a single, 19 minute, fairy tale opus, “Happiness Stan”, narrated by comedian Stanley Unwin in his own nonsense language. It recounts the story of a boy named Stan who goes looking for the other half of the moon when it's on the wane.  He rescues a house fly that grows to enormous size, able to transport Stan to the place where he learns the meaning of life. Fanciful? But, of course, and delivered in an insouciant Cockney manner, abetted by processed vocals, keyboards, and guitars. Captain Billy has already covered The Faces with Rod Stewart, which showcases them as an unparalleled R and B outfit, but this thing was the apex of psychedelic “High” Art” - but, never taking itself too seriously. Ps: There was some controversy stirred up by genius entrepreneur manager-producer Andrew Loog Oldham, when he published an ad for the record which parodied The Lord's Prayer - just another aspect of its hallucinogenic conception.

#91. The Master-Apprentice Model: A Powerful Hierarchy with Travis Sherwood

A Voice and Beyond

This week on a Voice and Beyond, we welcome, Travis Sherwood, who holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California. Travis currently serves as Assistant Professor of Voice and Vocal Area Coordinator on the faculty of San Diego State University, School of Music and Dance. Travis frequently lectures and presents on the subjects of artistic literacy, student-centred pedagogy, voice pedagogy, and vocal literature. In this episode, Travis discusses his research into the traditions, evolution and limitations of the master-apprentice Model. Travis tells us that this learning environment establishes a clear hierarchy of power in the teacher-student relationship. He explains that the master-apprentice tradition is rooted in the experiences of the master, requiring students to value the teacher's observations of their voice over their own. From an inferior position, students become dependent on their teachers, often ignoring their bodies in pursuit of the “correct” way to sing. Additionally, in this teacher-centred pedagogy, students frequently silence their artistic and technical instincts. Travis warns us that by perpetuating this tradition, we are not creating safe spaces where students can be expressive, artistic and explore their voices autonomously. He states that there are still certain elements of this tradition permeating in our profession and as voice teachers we must check in on ourselves to ensure we are not perpetuating this teaching model. He suggests we can begin by questioning whether out teaching is grounded in a student-centred philosophy and that our teaching values and builds off the knowledge and experiences of our students. As a mentor and co-learner, we must listen to students with an empathetic ear, responding to their needs and encouraging their sense of individual agency. Travis believes that as we move into the future, the master-apprentice model can limit the possibility of evolution in the voice teaching field. This is a most fascinating and informative interview with Travis Sherwood and one that will inspire many to reflect on their teaching practices.https://travissherwoodbaritone.com/In this episode:06:11 — The Background of a Master07:43 — Experience From a Student-Centered Teacher11:08 — Master-Apprentice: The Status Quo20:08 — The Effects of the Traditional Model21:19 — Breaking Free From Dependency23:33 — The Limited Perspective of the Overseer29:22 — Teachers Being Life-Long Students32:11 — Reverberating the Student's Language35:36 — The Things That Permeated From the Histories37:54 — The Evolution of Teaching the Voice40:38 — Balancing Act of Voice Science44:17 — Harms of High Art and Lower Art Mentality50:42 — Is It an Open or a Closed Repertoire?01:01:05 — Be Student-Centered: Grounding the Pedagogy01:03:54 — Travis' Best Advice For more go to https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/91Like this episode?
