In the early 2000s, Jamie Stewart wanted to go to Vietnam. They brought a rubber baby doll with them to take photos while they were there. One of those photos became the cover for Xiu Xiu's excellent A Promise album. But, for this trip to happen in the first place, Jamie needed to raise some money. For 8 months before they left, they recorded as many punk and ska bands as they could (One of the bands was Short Round). This isn't the only time that Jamie has intersected with ska. Another band they recorded, Firme, lent them their horn section for the Knife Play record. One of their old 90s bands, IBOPA (Indestructible Beat Of Palo Alto), played with a lot of ska bands since they were a fun horn-driven band (Ska was an influence, but not a style they played). Another one of their bands, Ten In The Swear Jar, released a record on Asian Man Records, and Pitchfork made a point to talk about ska in the review, despite there being NO ska on the album. We talk about all of this with Jamie, and so much more. We discuss the time period when they worked at Streetlight Records, how they discovered ska and reggae on KPFK on Sundays, how their 2nd concert ever was Pato Banton and Tippa Irie, and how they briefly played bass in a dub band. They also tell us about the time GG Allin jumped on stage and demanded they "plays some blues." They tell us stories about The Cactus Club. They tell us why Deerhoof is an amazing band. We learn who Richard Snakedick is. We discuss what it was like to perform a balloon solo as the opening act on AJJ's 2021 tour, and we find out why they once blurted out "Fred Flintstone's Lucius Dick." Plus, Jamie sings for us a Weird Al-style parody song they wrote when they were a teenager. Just imagine The Grand Illusion by Styx, but it's The Grand Fart! Support the show

Welcome to Ska Boom Interviews, which is the audio companion to my book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History now available from DiWulf Publishing and Amazon. The goal of this podcast is talk about ska and reggae with an emphasis on American ska and reggae history and the bands, musicians and people who have helped to create and influence a uniquely American version of ska and reggae that spans from the late 70s until today. In this episode, I'm speaking with Grammy nominated reggae legend Pato Banton.Born Patrick Murray in London, Pato was left for dead at the age of five, an orphan at six, a doorman and “lookout” for illegal late-night parties by eight, a DJ on a Jamaican sound system by twelve, and dropped out of school for good by thirteen. He was winning rap battles by age fifteen, became the father of three children at seventeen, and was incarcerated for the first time at the age of eighteen. By nineteen he was touring with UB40, and by twenty was at the top of the music charts in the UK. He spent his twenties and thirties recording album after album and touring around the world tirelessly, culminating in a Grammy nomination. By forty, the middle-school dropout became the Head of The Music Department at one college and Assistant Director of Creative Studies at another, even creating his own school and music program for disadvantaged youth in Birmingham. By fifty, Pato was homeless (by choice), living in an RV in a parking lot in Los Angeles. Now sixty, Pato lives simply but comfortably with his wife and still continues to tour the US and the rest of the world extensively and has become a minister. Throughout it all, he's never stopped being a father to his eleven children, never stopped touring, and never stopped spreading his message of positivity and love.Ska Boom is hosted/produced by Marc Wasserman and co-produced/engineered by Rob George. Please note: The music clips included in this podcast fall under the “Fair Use Doctrine” as defined by Section 107 of the Copyright Act. Can 1996 really be over a quarter of a century ago? Yes it can, and this is where we find the hot hits of summer as sizzlingly delivered in NOW34!The charts as ever, were serving up a veritable feast of genres, hits and headlines. The feelgood factor was in full swing, in part due to the excitement of Euro96 but also a UK culture scene that was embracing a vibrant period of creativity across music, cinema and the arts. ‘Britpop' was still very much the ‘thing'of 1996 and this edition of NOW fully embraced the guitar pop of its many ambassadors such as blur, Oasis and Suede. But this is only part of the story.Something else was happening in the pop world that would soon explosively ‘spice' up and shape the rest of the decade. And as boy bands splintered, rising stars were seeking their Freedom (and much more of that to come!). As always, the fast pace of the UK music scene is captured here, and so we welcome huge crossover club anthems, hip hop and RnB royalty, euro(vision) pop and a clutch of familiar faces trying to evolve with the 90s – some more successfully than others.Join radio and TV music producer, writer and curator Lee Thompson as we explore the summer of 1996 through the tracks across NOW, that's what I call music 34. Along the way, discover which act ‘would never be heard of again' after their first visit to Viking FM (clue – they were heard of again, quite considerably!), the legendary soul singer who would swap the dancefloor for the glamour of the North East trainline and which track Lee joined Neil Finn on as a duet. This and much, much more! And also find out why Bon Jovi and Pato Banton probably won't be returning our calls. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Mendo Dope started making music in 2007 when brothers 'Old E' & 'Bleezy' got introduced into the industry with Reek Daddy on NOYB Records. After releasing their first nation wide album in 2009, they exploded on to the scene in 2013 with their double disc reggae hip-hop album, "Planters Of The Trees", featuring reggae legends Pato Banton, Marlon Asher, President Brown and more. Soon after the release they were raided by local sheriff and COMET for growing medical cannabis, but that didn't stop them. They gained a huge following throughout the Cannabis Culture and continued to release albums dedicated to the ganja farmers and medical patients. In 2015, they took their music outside to record "Live In The Garden", the first album ever to be completed in a marijuana tree recording booth right in their backyard. As their popularity grew, Mendo Dope began touring the states and performing with a full live band traveling across country. Mendo's popular "How To Grow" DVDs and 26 million plus views on their YouTube series for outdoor cultivating have gotten them featured in Magazines such as High Times, Weed World, Cannabis Now and Greenleaf. This month is epic for the pair as they perform for the first time at The Emerald Cup and get ready for their 15th album, "M's In The Air", dropping 12/31/21. Mendo Dope will continue to help farms progress across the globe and break the stigma of the powerful cannabis plant! https://mendodopemusic.com

As their popularity grew they began touring the states and performing with a full live band goin all the way across the country for the 2017 Boston Freedom Rally. With their popular "How To Grow" DVD and YouTube series on outdoor cultivating they have been featured in Magazines such as High Times, Weed World, Cannabis Now and Greenleaf with strain reviews and music articles. We look back at some of the best Reggae from the 90's! Interviews with Maxi Priest, Shaggy, Pato Banton and Tippa Irie
Pato Banton is a reggae singer and toaster from Birmingham, England. He received the nickname "Pato Banton" from his stepfather; The first name derives from a Jamaican night owl that stays up all night calling "patoo, patoo" and the last name from the disc jockey slang word "Banton" which means heavyweight lyricist or storyteller. In 1994, he achieved a number 1 on the UK Singles Chart with a cover of The Equals' Baby Come Back featuring Robin and Ali Campbell of UB40. Banton first came to public attention in the early 1980s when he worked with The Beat. He recorded "Pato and Roger a Go Talk" with Ranking Roger, included on the 1982 album Special Beat Service. He went on to record a series of singles for Fashion Records and Don Christie Records.
Horribly slow, upbeat music, some of the laziest songwriting, a lot of unnecessary thanking and of course a geography lesson. All this and more as Red and Branden break down two retarded reggae songs. It's no wonder we rarely go through this genre. It's so fucking dumb. Anyway, either way I guess you can't go wrong this week but really only one host brought an actual reggae song. So you get to decide which is worse between: Pato Banton: Go Pato vs Laid Back: Sunshine Reggae Leave us a voicemail 910-370-1604 Follow us on twitter over at https://twitter.com/ShittySongPod and vote on which song you think is the worst. Mendo Dope started making music in 2007. Brothers 'Old E' & 'Bleezy' got introduced to the industry with Reek Daddy on NOYB Records, releasing their first nation wide album in 2009. They exploded on to the scene in 2013 with their double disc reggae hip-hop album, "Planters Of The Trees", featuring reggae legends Pato Banton, Marlon Asher, President Brown and more. The following year they recorded Season 2 of "Live In The Garden" and collaborated with legendary artist Mykal Rose the voice of Black Uhuru, Pato Banton, Winstrong and many more. As their popularity grew, they began touring the states and performing with a full live band traveling across country for the 2017 Boston Freedom Rally. With their popular "How To Grow" DVD and YouTube series on outdoor cultivating, they have been featured in Magazines such as High Times, Weed World, Cannabis Now and Greenleaf, with strain reviews and music articles. As they continue to tour and record music, their fan base continues to grow around the world. Get ready for Mendo's 14th album, "Weed Nerd Nation", dropping 4/20/21 & 'How To Grow 2' DVD releasing in March. @mendodopeboys www.plantersofthetrees.com www.mendodopemusic.com @faded_truth

We all have our gifts whether we recognize them or not. For example this episode's guest has Perfect Pitch. In the noise of "Reality" television programmes such as The X factor & The Voice and multiple Social Media Platforms for fans choose from, are our musical gifts still recognized...? Or is it all about the latest gimmick? In this episode Naron Litchmore and I discuss the peaks and flows of the Music Industry and who truly wins in the battle of Quality over Quantity. He is a pianist that started his musical journey at the age of 7 and over the years he has performed with many great artists such as Yaz Alexander, Pato Banton and me! More recently Naron has been performing with the Aston Performing Arts Academy (APAA) who aim to inspire young people through creative arts. All guests are asked select 7 Reggae tracks that inspire, connect them to their culture or evoke heartflet memories. Unfortunately Naron only selected 3 (which you can hear me cuss him for in the interview!) but to make up for it, as this episode is all about the Music industry I have included Reggae Uprising Podcast fan Don G's single, along with everybody's favourite song of mine "Bless My Soul". Marc Antoine (May 28, 1963) is a French composer, guitarist and music producer. He is currently one of the most recognized figures of smooth jazz. In 1988 he moved to London to join the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra. In this stage he also works with Soul To Soul, Pato Banton and General Public and delves into the effervescent acid jazz scene of the English capital. At the beginning of the 90s he left for the United States and settled in Los Angeles. In his American stage he collaborates with established artists such as Sting, Rod Stewart, Céline Dion and intervenes in more innovative trends such as Solsonics, Guru or Queen Latifah, as well as Basia or Chris Botti. He reaches an agreement with Tommy LiPuma, the prestigious producer of Miles Davis, George Benson or Diana Krall, through which he signs with GRP. With this seal he will record his next works. After living and recording in Madrid, the hometown of his wife Rebecca, for 12 years, the talented Parisian acoustic guitarist moved back to Southern California in 2015. One of the most notable aspects of Antoine's return to recording four years after the release of his previous album Guitar Destiny is his incredible recovery from two major health problems In 2012, he underwent major cardiac surgery to fix a debilitating atrial fibrillation problem, and then. In 2014 after several misdiagnoses, she underwent surgery to relieve hand cramps caused by a condition called "Unchained Finger." One of his fingers on his left hand got stuck in a strange position, causing unbearable pain when he played the guitar. Fans will be happy to know that Antoine, having survived these physical challenges, has never felt more energized, musically or otherwise, in his life. Thanks Marc!

Gracias Marc !!

One of his fingers on his left hand got stuck in a strange position, causing unbearable pain when he played the guitar. Fans will be happy to know that Antoine, having survived these physical challenges, has never felt more energized, musically or otherwise, in his life. Thanks Marc!

In this episode the Bad Boy Runners stray into a new realm of Podcasting by giving actual genuine advice for anyone thinking about doing the Marathon des Sables, and the usual off-topic asides for anyone who isn't thinking about running it. David begins by pitching other podcasts to Jody A new member of the team is introduced There's more quality MILF banter to be had (amongst other things) We learn why Jody's hip has ruined his reputation in the eyes of his family David talks us through why Caesar and Primavera Salads are going to be his go-to fuel Jody tries to pry David's race number out of him so we can overwhelm him with anonymous abuse They discuss some delightful toenail stories (don't listen whilst eating) David pitches a new method for recovery for professional athletes (although don't expect to see this at the next olympics) Jody tells David exactly why his tent mates will finish the week hating him. If you want to know what WWAPD stands for then you'll want to listen to the end Once you're done listening, be sure to join the conversation on the Bad Boy Running Facebook Group where hopefully you can help David find Pato Banton's contact details or nominate somebody for Bad Boy of the Month. This week, we find some hair dye, a CD and a watch in our bag of wonders, giving us cause to reflect on times gone by when hair wasn't grey, time didn't fly and Pato Banton ruled the airwaves...which we then recorded onto sellotaped-over cassettes. These, friends, were good years. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The episode continues with more chat and feedback from Bad Boy Running listeners... ... plus there's some actual running talk (buried at around the 37-minute mark, we believe). Here's the order of service: The chaps talk new kinds of races… and it takes an odd turn Jody and David try to work out the heaviest person in the world They guys decide a new Bad Boy challenge that involves putting ON weight The boys compare images of the fattest people in Britain and then present a new challenge to BBR listeners … and then some bad maths Another call out for sponsors (and this is a real half-hearted attempt) The attention turns to the Color Obstacle Rush UK A discussion of the anger about BBR's lack of awards nominations Why Tyson Fury would LOVE Edinburgh Marathon Some seriously good Bad Boy performances are revealed… and why David and Jody's advice WORKS Jody reveals that David has a stalker David argues he doesn't have serious job titles… and reveals how he manages to spend his time David inadvertently reveals the nickname of his ex-girlfriend… and gets all cryptic (answers on a postcard please) as he goes off on a story about he met her One listener's attempts at matchmaking with David… and David reveals he's off the market (allegedly) David reveals his worries about jinxing the relationship by mentioning her in the podcast… oh. The guys reveal what they do on Valentine's Day… (not with each other, of course) Officially the WORST segue EVER Letters from international Bad Boy Running listeners A call out to US runners as Jody and David make an unashamed play to win over the US running market David tries another Pato Banton impression… A reader question about pacing leaves the guys confused about a race's pacing strategy… and then fail to work it out A warning about pacers… and why you shouldn't always trust them (and a clearly made-up stat from David) How to seriously p*** off a Park Run The rise of BBR's resident veterinary expert A call out for technical experts to edit Bad Boy Running Enjoy!
