THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS by Joni Mitchell (Asylum, 1975)Hail, hail Joni Mitchell! A survivor with a roller-coaster history of adventures, both artistic and existential. She's still standing, albeit with a cane - (Polio couldn't fell her; an aneurysm? Piffle!) From folkie goddess who pierced her madrigals through with a brutal, autobiographical honesty, through her jazzbo period where challenging experimentations were offered with Amazonian bravado. After Blue, my favorite Joni record was Mingus, wherein she introduced me to an hitherto unknown (to me) bass maestro by way of a seamless collaboration. She was loved by many, but was impossible to control, so her romantic paths were marked with scorched earth, but the genius gentlemen left behind could only carry the torch in her name through the ensuing decades. The Hissing of Summer Lawns was dissed upon its release, coming, as it did, on the heels of her biggest hit, Court and Spark, but is now recognized as a masterpiece. She's spreading out here, sonically and vocally. Her fascination with jazz voicing, the impressionist lyrics, a Burundi Drumline, tasty samples and loops - it was all ahead of its time. But, then again, so was Joni.
This week we discuss the results of the recent elections in France and the UK, how that relates to the SAVE Act which recently passed the house in the USA, what all of this says about the medium term future of our economy and most importantly - what you should be doing to prepare for it. Alex also makes a special announcement and much more...

I was 11 when the Beatles first appeared in America, and I literallyowe my life, my career, and my marriage to the guitar I bought and learned to play because of their influence. I have the entire Beatles catalogue on 8 Track, including the post break up solo albums, so picking one for the return of Captain Billy's Magic 8 Ball presented a real quandary.Rich suggested, and rightfully so, that we celebrate Let It Be, that benighted lesser effort, released at the tail end of their partnership, because of the recent revelations made manifest by Peter Jackson's Get Back, with its lovingly restored footage, that documents Let It Be's creation. That film put to rest the mistaken belief that the boys were at each other's throats the whole time that they were grinding this record out. On the contrary, we witnessed them stripping everything back to the basics, and enjoying their collaboration as one of the world's greatest live bands - even if it was only for one time, on a roof top.

Kicking off the third episode of The TWENTY30, co-hosts Lucien and Hanaa consult a magic 8 ball, the famous toy, on how the forthcoming show is going to turn out — receiving a funny answer with which you hopefully disagree (inshallah). Then, Hanaa kicks off Episode 3's DEEPDIVE segment, highlighting a recent interview from Mohammed Al-Jadaan, which produced a number of interesting comments on a range of topics including income tax and VAT in Saudi Arabia, the importance of open communication between government leaders and the public, and much more. The segment is part of an ongoing effort by The TWENTY30 to bring to light media items that made waves in the Arabic world but which may have been overlooked by Western media and the English-speaking world. The hosts round out the show as always with a discussion of some interesting recent news items, including Ronaldo's hot temper and flooding across Arabia including shocking images from Dubai, the IMF setting up shop in Saudi Arabia, and more. Programming note: on Wednesday, Lucien and Hanaa will publish Episode 4 from a LIVE recording in studio from London, UK, discussing Vision 2030's “report card” and much more! Like The TWENTY30? Before Fall Out Boy hit the stage at CFG Bank Arena, Pete Wentz joined me for a really fun interview! We discussed why they've never toured with Jimmy Eat World, can you let the Magic 8 Ball decide everything for an entire day, how Pete got involved in Topspin 2K25, he should be a playable character in the game, where did the white cowboy outfit from the "So Much For Stardust" video go, how Pete gets nervous about a lot of things and the potential of what could be next for Fall Out Boy.

It’s a new year, and that means experts — and nonexperts — have lots of guesses about what 2024 may hold. In this episode, we’ll talk about some of those predictions. Will inflation hit to 3%? Will consumer credit keep ticking up? Will gas prices drop below $3 a gallon? Signs point to yes. Plus, Houston has been nationally recognized for its successful Housing First approach to homelessness. But keeping up those programs will mean more funding, especially as housing costs rise.

Ever wish a cheap plastic toy from Walmart could tell you the future? We sure do! And we try every year. It's our annual Magic 8 Ball episode today with Paula Pant, Len Penzo and OG. Each year, we ask the Magic 8 Ball (yes, really, the one you can buy at Walmart) riveting questions for the upcoming year then reflect back on those questions at the end of the year. Today, we run through the answers to our questions from last year and ask new questions for 2024. How will the Magic 8 Ball perform this year? We'll find out! We wrap up our Best of 2023 week-long extravaganza by revisiting our first roundtable episode of the year, where Len Penzo's Magic 8-ball made some bold predictions...take a listen for yourself. Every year we ask a magic 8 ball that Len Penzo purchased at Walmart to predict the future. In the early years the ball was spot-on. Lately…not so much. But we do learn a lot about not falling into “current thinking” traps and about not worrying so much about what's top-of-mind in the moment. The truth tends to have a longer shelf life. Please disregard any mentions of current events. This episode originally aired on January 6, 2023. You can see the original show notes here. Adventures of a Pus Whisperer
RING A DING DING TIMECOME FLY WITH ME by Frank Sinatra (Capitol, 1958)This is my 100th episode, and it seems appropriate to end the Captain Billy series here with Frank Sinatra. The practice of going through my 8 track collection and luxuriating in the music of my youth has been a tonic, getting me through a season of grief and isolation. And, now, as I pack up my house of 26 years, parsing through and divesting myself of some weighty possessions, I sense that it may also be time to move on to other occupations. My partner, Richie B, has always been a devotee of Blue Eyes, - (he's been lobbying for Frank's induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame for years) - and when I started collecting 8 tracks by amassing large lots of unidentified carts, there were more Sinatra tapes appearing at my door than by any other artist. This album is from the jazzy, Rat-Pack period Frank, my favorite Sinatra era by far. The early, crooning, Bobby-Soxer's Dreamboat never did it for me. But these piquant Capitol recordings have it all: the swing, the manly heartbreak, and winking sexy fun of America's all time greatest male interpreter of popular song, during the time that that form dominated American culture.Arranged by the jaunty Billy May, everything about this “concept” album - (a musical trip around the world) - shows The Chairman of the Board at his ring a ding ding best. Dig those syncopated horn pops and flirty flutes as they insinuate themselves around Frank's relaxed articulations. Here, Sinatra is perfecting his ability to mine deeper layers of meaning from lyrical phrases by stopping and bending time. It is an art exhibition, by a master of communication, at the pinnacle of his craft. One more thing - For the past 20 years I have been fortunate to have worked at an Acting school situated directly across the street from the iconic Capitol Records building - the edifice that Frank built, and I have some wonderful memories of teaching in a classroom of windows, with blinds raised, so we could watch that cylindrical building of legend be bathed in a rosy Hollywood sunset. So, I salute you, home of my heroes, the Beatles, and of Richie's - Frank Sinatra. That's all, folks.
NO BERLINNIGEL LIVED by Murray Head (Columbia 1973)Concept (with a capital C) album Nigel Lived was released in the same year as Lou Reed's Berlin, and although neither one was deemed acceptable radio fare, and both are theatrically based, playing on disturbing subject matter, they are light years apart. Berlin has been recognized as a masterpiece, a gut-wrenching portrait of abuse, co-dependence, and addiction, and Nigel Lived….? Well, frankly it's hard to tell what it's about. We've been told it concerns a starry eyed young musician who comes to the big city, experiences disillusionment, and takes to heroin. However, even after a close listen with the lyrics at my side, (link included below) I had a hard time following the thread. The original release came with a “found diary” of lyrics, but the lush production by Nick DeCaro is so deeply layered, it's almost impossible to discern a consistent story line beneath the baroque atmosphere. Often the compelling vocal stylings of Murray Head are mixed too low or at odds with an increasingly chaotic arrangement. This is ambition run riot. Its existence went unheralded, and Mr. Head, a successful musical stage and film performer (Jesus Christ Superstar; Chess, Sunday Bloody Sunday) never performed the songs in public - until now. Intervention records has recently remastered the Phil Brown engineered recording on 180gram vinyl, and that release was very successful, leading Mr. Head to reconsider reopening the Nigel Lived song cache and sharing it live with the world. As a sympathetic thespian I applaud him. Parts of the opus are delightful listening, and rendered live without the added filigree, this dynamic performer has a shot at making his original concept comprehensible. https://www.karaoke-lyrics.net/lyrics/head-murray/pacing-on-the-station-88213
JUST PLAIN BILL?JUST AS I AM by Bill Withers (Sussex, 1971)Bill Withers was uncategorizable. Was he a soul artist? A folk musician? A blues singer? He certainly was no pop star. He picked a nylon string guitar, for God's sakes! But, even so, he was one of the most covered songwriters who ever plied the craft. His appeal was universal. There hasn't been any aspiring singer, of any genre, who hasn't tried to put over Lean on Me or Ain't No Sunshine. Bill belonged to all of us. Just As I Am was Bill's debut album, produced by one of the premier soul artists, Booker T Jones, but in it he covers folk avatar Fred Neil's Everybody's Talkin', and Paul McCartney's Let it Be. Listen to Grandma's Hands and you can hear the guitar of rock icon Steven Stills. The MG's Duck Dunn plays some of the bass parts, but so does Chris Etheridge of The Flying Burrito Brothers.Withers narrates part of his story himself in the cut Do it Good. The son of a miner from Slab Fork, West Virginia, Bill worked as a machinist for Douglas Aircraft, IBM, and Ford - all the while sending out demo tapes until Clarence Avant signed him to Sussex, where he hit it with Ain't No Sunshine at the age of 32 - way over the hill by pop star standards. He's pictured on the label holding his lunch pail, dressed in a t shirt and jeans - and when he first hit pay dirt, he refused to quit his job, saying that the music business was “fickle”. Is it ever! The common touch was always part of Bill's magic. And, of course, an uncanny talent and instinct, not to mention a warm baritone that poured like honey out of America's car radios. When he was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 he was characteristically understated when he said: “I don't think I've done bad for a guy from Slab Fork, West Virginia.” Neither do we.
WHAT A CONCEPT!OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE by Small Faces (1968, Immediate)You recognize the famous, round, Victorian, snuff tobacco tin cover? It was designed by Nick Twedell and Pete Brown, and announced to Acid heads everywhere that this album was going to be a trip to be reckoned with, and it did not disappoint. Thought by many to be the first Rock n Roll concept record, Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake was the premier British, hot house musical flower from that psychedelic garden, mixing British Music Hall with rocking blues - a recipe that also worked marvelously for Ray Davies and The Kinks. The Artful Dodger-esque ditty Lazy Sunday, brayed by future Humble Pie frontman Steve Marriott, became the big hit, and the album went to #1 in the UK. Side two is dedicated to a single, 19 minute, fairy tale opus, “Happiness Stan”, narrated by comedian Stanley Unwin in his own nonsense language. It recounts the story of a boy named Stan who goes looking for the other half of the moon when it's on the wane. He rescues a house fly that grows to enormous size, able to transport Stan to the place where he learns the meaning of life. Fanciful? But, of course, and delivered in an insouciant Cockney manner, abetted by processed vocals, keyboards, and guitars. Captain Billy has already covered The Faces with Rod Stewart, which showcases them as an unparalleled R and B outfit, but this thing was the apex of psychedelic “High” Art” - but, never taking itself too seriously. Ps: There was some controversy stirred up by genius entrepreneur manager-producer Andrew Loog Oldham, when he published an ad for the record which parodied The Lord's Prayer - just another aspect of its hallucinogenic conception.
NO ONE HIT WONDERFULFILLINGNESS FIRST FINALE by Stevie Wonder (Tamla, 1974)Thank the Lord for Stevie Wonder! He's always been with me, energizing me with ecstatic revelations. His joyful music got me through adolescence and young manhood, providing spiritual sustenance and joy. His massive cultural contribution cannot be done justice in a short essay - only obeisance. And, of course I'm hardly alone in that opinion. In 1975, at the 17th Grammy Awards, he was given his second consecutive Album of the Year prize for this record, which had topped the LP and Tapes charts, as well as the Soul.Fulfillingness First Finale is the fourth of five recordings regarded as products of his “classic” period, starting with Music of My Mind, and culminating with Songs in the Key of Life. I distinctly remember the first time I heard TMOMM, and the phrase: “my woman wants to be a super-woman, but is that really in her mind?” Perhaps he was paying tribute to the indomitable Syreeta Wright, his life (briefly) and work partner (for 2 decades), whom he married in 1970 at the age of 20, and divorced 18 months later. But this “marriage of true minds” coincided with Stevie's discovery of the synth - the instrument he turned into a household appliance.Another thing to celebrate about Stevie and Syreeta is how they fought for and gained autonomy from Motown, the institution that had steered Stevie's career since childhood, in 1971, with the album Where I'm Coming From. Musical restlessness and social consciousness drove them to tour with the Rolling Stones in ‘72, and embrace wider audiences across the musical spectrum. Listen to “Heaven is 10 Zillion Lightyears Away” with its folk rock chordings, and you feel the confluence of universal soul pouring out to embrace you.One thing that blew my mind was to learn that, following a near-fatal auto accident which put Stevie into a coma - he created this monumental work. It makes sense that it has been noted to be a more reflective, personal statement. This is what artists do: convert the raw experiences of life into catharsis.
AUSTIN CONSIGLIEREOLD NO. 1 by Guy Clark (RCA, 1975)Guy Clark's farmhouse was ground zero for a whole generation of America's finest songwriters. Check out the scene in the “Outlaw Country” doc, Heartworn Highways, with the babyfaced Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and Guy harmonizing and trading songs and stories at the kitchen table. This was a summit meeting of Towne Van Zandt's Gospel spreaders keeping the flame of devotion burning- and Guy, Towne's best friend, was John the Baptist. Or, watch that David Letterman clip, 24 years later, with Guy, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Nanci Griffith, Steve, and Rodney standing up there like Mount Rushmore, singing “Desperadoes Waiting for a Train”, and you realize that the gospel seeds that had been spread in the 70's had flowered across the nation. Well, that signature song appears on this, Guy's debut album, and it's like encountering the Dead Sea Scrolls - the original rendition. Add to this the elegiac, definitive version of L.A. Freeway - the song Jerry Jeff made into a folk-rock hit - (with my high school buddy, Jon Simons on harp), and you begin to intuit that you're listening to history being made - and, oddly, it still sounds brand new.To quote the liner notes in Apple Music, a Guy Clark song…”isn't as loose as Walker, or as poetic as Townes Van Zandt, but his songs were the best built.” In 2006, this professional luthier put out the album “Workbench Songs” who's title characterizes his steady carpenter's hand. It was nominated for best Contemporary Folk/Americana Grammy. By this time the much covered consigliere of Austin was a universally acknowledged master and national treasure. In 2019 Steve Earle recorded an album of his mentor's songs and I made the pilgrimage to Amoeba Records to get my copy signed and my picture taken with the man who knew the man who wrote these songs.

CHEERFULLY MORBIDGILBERT O'SULLIVAN HIMSELF by Gilbert O'Sullivan (MAM/London, 1971)This unique artist scored a monster mega-hit with a song about suicide - “Alone Again (Naturally)” - How many times has that been done? The melody was so darn poppy and melodic that the tragic story outlines were impossible not to sing along with: “In a little while from now, If I'm not feeling any less sour, I promise myself to treat myself and visit a nearby tower, And climbing to the top will throw myself off, In an effort to make it clear to whoeverwants to know what it's like when you're shattered” Tra-La-La…..Wow. And, this ditty went to #1 and sold 2 million copies, intimating that the American taste for the morbid runs deeper than our “Never Say Die” attitude may suggest. Raymond Edward O'Sullivan, who fashioned his “Newsies” look after 1920s film characters, had other hits before and since, but never any with the impact that this odd anomaly created. “Himself” is a strong album, featuring a range of virtuosity in percussive piano style - (self-taught), and original writing chops. He's been compared to Paul McCartney and Randy Newman, but is definitely his own man. Maybe he's a hybrid of the two: with the sweet melodic sense of Paul and the biting irony of Randy. And, at 78 he's still at it: He retains a loyal fanbase in Japan, and in 2022 he put out a new album entitled “Driven”. Indeed, he must be. And, re-listening to this album 50 years later, his approach seems fresher and less coy that I remembered. He may be due for a late-career resurgence, similar to Yusuf Cat Stevens. I mused over the content of this song a lot at the time, and even though mortality wasn't on my mind back then, Alone Again's example of greater, more complex subject matter in songwriting raised my consciousness.
“MY BIGGEST CRUSH”EPISODE #2 -: BLUE by Joni Mitchell (1971, Reprise)From the first ringing chords of the dulcimer, and that quavering, pain-wracked voice swooning, “I am on a lonely road, and I am traveling, traveling, traveling…” I was in love – madly, permanently enamored of Joni Mitchell. Everything about her – her unmatchable talent, her neurotic self-dramatizing, her doomed romanticism… turned me on. Not sexually. My love for Joni Mitchell was purely aesthetic, but it was undeniable and achingly real. And it set me on a self-destructive path, hooking up with a succession of difficult, complicated, brilliant women. Women I could never keep, women with whom I could never feel truly at home.I'm a sucker for talented women. Often though, such talent leaves very little oxygen to share in any room. Eventually I got wise, and after awhile my love life yielded a happier ending. But, oh, the ecstatic misery of doomed romance!Blue is counted as one of the greatest albums ever made. This is not an obscure choice, but my truth is my truth, and I must pay homage. Listening to songs like River (I wish I had a river I could skate away on…), A Case of You (I could drink a case of you…), California (Will you take me as I am, strung out on another man….?) conjure an emotional tidal surge with no boundaries, and I was pulled in by the heady undertow of yearning.Biographers will tell you that James Taylor, Graham Nash, and Cary Raditz (Carey, get out your cane…) are the inspirations for these songs, but 50 years on they hardly matter. What counts is that eternal voice, intimately confessing her regrets and desires to you, the listener. And then, it's just Joni and you, alone together, locked in an artistic embrace.“BLUE”- JONI MITCHELL – 1971 – Reprise Records 1) All I Want 2) My Old Man 3) Little Green 4) Carey 5) Blue 6) California 7) This Flight Tonight 8) River 9) A Case Of You 10) The Last Time I Saw Richard
MARRY ME, LAURA!GONNA TAKE A MIRACLE by Laura Nyro with Labelle (1971, Columbia)When I was in high school, dating Cindy, every time The Fifth Dimension's Wedding Bell Blues came on the radio, with it's repeating plea - “MARRY ME, BILL!” -her family would tease us mercilessly. I couldn't escape the power of that record. Later, I realized that that song was created by the ultimate singer-songwriter's singer-songwriter, Laura Nyro, who's other familiar hit compositions include Eli's Coming (3 Dog Night), and And When I Die (Blood, Sweat, and Tears). Laura herself, however, remained a cult attraction. The benighted Nyro (born Nigro, the child of Russian-Polish parents in the Bronx) died young, like her mother, of ovarian cancer at the age of 49. Prior to the ordeals that characterized her later life, the musical atmosphere of that borough bathed the budding songsmith - (as it did Dion DiMucci) - in deep, resonating waves of doo-wop, soul, R&B, and pop. This album of covers is a trembling masterwork of tribute to those influences, assisted by the one and only Patti Labelle, who had become a sort of caretaker for the fragile Nyro. On the tour that preceded this recording Labelle would cook for her friend. Laura's love life was fraught, her careerist stumbles are the stuff of legend: (Best friend David Geffen was heartbroken when she re-signed with Columbia, instead of joining him on his fledgling Asylum label), but her music remained pure, and timeless. This recording has always been my favorite of mine - a time traveler's dream, since I first heard it. R&B titans Gamble and Huff oversaw the production from their seat of soul, in Philadelphia - (although, reputedly, Laura was the one fully in charge throughout the proceedings). However it came to be, GONNA TAKE A MIRACLE is a true miracle. Every cut brings tears to my eyes, and delight to my ears.

I had the good fortune of mentoring and teaching Alanna during her days at Hatboro-Horsham High School. She was one of a kind and really left her mark during her years in HS. She managed to find success even during the dreaded Covid years. Alanna, often referred to as Alanna Cena, has been a wrestling fan ever since 6th grade. Under the tutelage and mentorship of wrestling coach, Trent Mongillo, Alanna had success in both middle and high school. This past weekend Alanna competed for the chance to make it to the National College Wrestling Tournament in Iowa. Tune in this week to see how she did and how she has managed to succeed in college while playing a very intense sport!
