In this episode, Duane Osterlind sits down with author Dana Bowman to discuss the often-overlooked intersection of long-term recovery and menopause. Dana opens up about her journey through "the second reckoning"—a period where hormonal shifts triggered intense anxiety, suicidal ideation, and the resurfacing of addictive behaviors like sugar addiction and "doom scrolling."They explore the concept of process addictions, the importance of self-advocacy in medical settings, and how creativity can serve as a vital tool for navigating the "identity attack" that often accompanies aging. Dana's story is a powerful reminder that recovery isn't a destination, but a deepening process that requires grace, honesty, and a willingness to "boop the monster on the nose."Key Discussion PointsThe "Invisible" Struggle of Menopause: Dana discusses how menopause is one of the least researched medical conditions, despite having over 70 potential symptoms. She highlights the specific danger for women in recovery: how hormonal anxiety can mimic the "dark days" of active addiction.Process Addictions in Recovery: When the biological substance (alcohol) is removed, other behaviors often rush in to fill the void. Dana shares her personal struggle with sugar addiction, binge eating, and digital escapism as ways to cope with menopausal distress. The Identity Attack: Aging and menopause can lead to "Invisible Woman Syndrome." Dana explains how surrendering to this new phase of life is similar to the initial surrender in early sobriety. The "Boop" Rule: A family strategy for facing fears. Instead of running from anxiety or shame, Dana teaches listeners to look the "clown" in the eye and "boop" it on the nose—acknowledging its presence without letting it take control.Medical Self-Advocacy: The importance of finding healthcare providers who understand the nuances of addiction and recovery when treating hormonal or mental health issues. The Spectrum of Menopause SymptomsMenopause is far more than just "hot flashes." It affects the physical, emotional, and cognitive systems, which can be particularly destabilizing for those maintaining long-term sobriety.CategoryCommon Symptoms MentionedPhysicalJoint aches, insomnia, changes in hair/skin, exhaustion.EmotionalSevere anxiety, panic attacks, depression, suicidal ideation.BehavioralReturn of "shame circles," hiding behaviors, sugar cravings.Memorable Quotes"Alcoholism waited for me... and that's how I felt about the menopause symptoms because they're so sneaky. You feel like your whole body is betraying you.""Recovery is all about acceptance and surrender. It's hard when it's your own identity to really say, 'Who am I anymore?'""There are times when my soul just needs to be wrapped in bubble wrap, and I just really need to hunker down into that. And it's okay. It's rest."Resources MentionedDana's New Book: Humble Pie: Sober Menopause, Sugar Addiction, and The Sweetness of RecoveryDana's Previous Books: Bottled and How to be Perfect Like Me2Website: DanaBowmanCreative.comSocial Media: Follow Dana on TikTok and Instagram @theDanaBoIf you live in California and are looking for counseling or therapy please check out Novus Mindful Life Counseling and Recovery CenterNovusMindfulLife.comWe want to hear from you. What happens when midlife hits… and you're already sober? In this brilliantly honest and often hilarious episode, Vic is flying solo (Hamish wisely sat this one out) to chat with author Dana Bowman, a woman who thought she had long-term sobriety nailed, until menopause, food, marriage, parenting, body image, and a global pandemic all piled in at once.Dana's story, told in her book Humble Pie, is about far more than sobriety. It's about what happens when recovery collides with midlife. As menopause crept in, Dana found herself veering into binge eating and food addiction, struggling with comparison, scrolling, isolation, and frantic over-exercising. Just when she thought she'd dealt with the big stuff, life threw everything else at her… and eventually forced a reckoning.Vic hasn't read Humble Pie yet, but after hearing Dana talk about relapse, HRT, sugar cravings, dopamine dips, invisible women, and upgrading her sobriety toolkit, she knows it's going to be a wildly relatable ride. Expect real talk about perfectionism, changing bodies, and why custard creams sometimes end up doing the emotional heavy lifting.Whether you're pre, peri or post-menopause, or just quietly wondering why life feels harder than it used to, this one's for anyone who's ever felt like they were falling apart… and learning to laugh their way through it anyway.
This episode is our annual reality check. We're looking back at last year's New Year's resolutions, being honest about what stuck, what didn't, and what we maybe wildly overestimated. Some goals turned into real growth. Others turned into lessons. And yes, there was a little humble pie involved. Then we talk about how we're approaching the year ahead. Not with pressure or perfection, but with intention, flexibility, and a better understanding of who we actually are in kink and life.Visit https://linktr.ee/pinkkinkpodcast for links to our Patreon, Pink Kink Boutique, Pink Kink Institute, social media accounts and more!Affiliates - SireDonLeather.com (use code PINKKINK to save 10% on your order)Obedienceapp.com/pinkkink for a 20% discounthttps://love-blanket.com/?ref=PINKKINKPODCAST and use code PINKKINK10 for 10% off

Jesus cares about how we handle our finances because it's one of the clearest indicators of where our trust lies. True contentment isn't shaped by circumstances. When we have God, we truly have all we need. Dive into the second message in our Humble Pie series.

Speed reading might sound impressive, but research shows that slowing down can actually improve comprehension, retention, and enjoyment. In this opening segment, we explore why reading at a slower pace could be the real key to getting the most out of your books and articles. https://www.bustle.com/p/7-reasons-slow-reading-is-actually-a-good-thing-because-being-a-speed-reader-is-overrated-73092 On average, people juggle about 22 goals at any given time — but chasing all of them often leads to frustration and burnout. My guest, Jon Acuff, bestselling speaker and author of nine books, including All It Takes is a Goal (https://amzn.to/3PtSiOF), shares a fresh, motivating approach to goal setting. Learn how to identify the goals that truly matter, let go of the ones that don't, and build momentum toward the ones that can change your life. “It's raining cats and dogs,” “go cold turkey,” “know the ropes” — we say these things all the time, but rarely stop to ask where they originated. Caroline Taggart, longtime publishing professional and author of Humble Pie and Cold Turkey: English Expressions and Their Origins (https://amzn.to/3ZazBTw), takes us on a fun journey into the surprising and sometimes bizarre backstories of the phrases we use every day. Winning arguments isn't easy — but there's one simple strategy that dramatically improves your chances. In this closing segment, I share the key insight from Mike Nichols, author of The Lost Art of Listening (https://amzn.to/3ErzkSy), that can help you argue smarter, connect better, and maybe even change a few minds. Grammy Award-winning guitarist Peter Frampton will perform “Baby, I Love Your Way” on “Conan” February 29. The performance celebrates the forthcoming release of his new album Acoustic Classics, due February 26 via RED Distribution. In addition, a new live video of Frampton performing the song with longtime collaborator Gordon Kennedy is premiering on The Huffington Post today [insert link]. For the first time ever, Frampton brings us stripped-down versions of his classic hits including “Lines On My Face,” “Do You Feel Like I Do,” “Show Me The Way” and more. Acoustic Classics also includes one new song, “All Down to Me,” which was co-written by Kennedy, who also co-produced Frampton's Grammy Award-winning album Fingerprints. “All Down to Me” is also the only track on the record that features a guest musician. See below for full track listing. The new album was mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Jeff Balding (Don Henley, Lionel Richie, Joe Cocker) and produced by Frampton himself. Of the recording process, Frampton explains, “The approach I took on this was that each song came across as if you are the first person to hear this song after I wrote it. I had to reverse engineer each song in order to get this result, which I feel I achieved.”Acoustic Classics is available for pre-order now and a special pre-order bundle is being offered exclusively on www.frampton.com, which includes the album, a pick set and signed lyric sheet. Frampton will also perform on DirecTV and AT&T's new weekly music program, the Audience Network, March 4. The programming will be available to both subscribers of DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse and the two platforms' mobile apps. Moreover, Frampton has extended his “Peter Frampton Raw, An Acoustic Tour” with more dates next month. Kennedy will join him again for the March run along with Frampton's son, singer and guitarist Julian Frampton. Peter Frampton remains one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. At 16, he was lead singer and guitarist for British band the Herd. At 18, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie. His session work includes collaborations with such legendary artists as George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, John Entwistle and many others. His fifth solo album, the electrifying Frampton Comes Alive! is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and remains one of the top-selling live records of all time. Humble Pie is often overshadowed by bands like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Queen, but they were a considered a "supergroup" when they formed in 1969-- fronted by Steve Marriott from the Small Faces and Peter Frampton from The Herd. Their first 2 albums are a mixed bag, but by the time they signed with A&M Records in 1970 they had refined their style down to a bluesy, hard-rockin' sound. Rock On (1971) was their most successful album to date and features "Stone Cold Fever", which is itself a stone cold classic. On this episode of Spokast!, I sit down with Iyzlow Matisse—one half of Spokane's own Change & Matisse—to talk about his brand new solo single, Humble Pie.What was supposed to be a short convo turned into a full-on deep dive into Mike's journey through music, the Motown and soul influences from his childhood, and how Humble Pie evolved from a verse written in 2018 into the track it is today. We also threw in a blind pie taste test—because why not? Huge shout-out to CallyAnn Crothers of Crothers Critters for that farm-fresh pie that blew us away. And of course, major love to my wife, Abbey, for her legendary homemade holiday apple pie. This episode is all about growth, staying true to your craft, and not rushing the process.
