Can you believe we're a week away from the finale of this season of the More Money Podcast? Helping me draw this season to a close is returning guest Erin Lowry, author of the widely popular Broke Millenial series. With her latest instalment in the series just hitting bookshelves, she's joining me on the show today to talk about her new workbook, Broke Millennial Workbook: Take Control and Get Your Financial Life Together and you better believe I'm giving away some copies to some lucky listeners! Previous to this workbook, Erin has authored Broke Millennial, Broke Millennial Takes On Investing, and Broke Millennial Talks Money. She's been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and on CBS Sunday Morning, CNBC, and The Rachael Ray Show. She has also written for The New York Times and USA Today, and currently contributes to Bloomberg Opinion. In this episode, Erin shares how this workbook challenges you to take action with your finances by crunching your numbers, looking at the big picture, and figuring out what your real money goals are for your future. Erin also shares how she's updated the previous advice given in her other books to better reflect how to navigate a post-pandemic world. Finally, she shares what chapters in her book she thinks are the key to sorting your personal finances. For full episode show notes visit: https://jessicamoorhouse.com/371

93: Changing Your Money Mindset with Ashleigh Doucet

Ashleigh and I have known each other for a few months, but every time we're able to chat we always end up diving really deep about creativity, being a millennial woman - and money. Ashleigh has some very strong opinions about money. There's a lot to know when it comes to money, and it can be scary to start looking into it - but Ashleigh is a big advocate of making sure that you control your money, and not the other way around. From a young age, Ashleigh saw her parents make big ticket purchases - houses, cars - but she also saw a bunch of arguments, stress, and eventual bankruptcy. After a few years of frugal living and getting back on their feet through well-earned savings, however, Ashleigh saw her parents' whole life, perspective, and mindset around money change completely. They were able to learn to live below their means, and to be empowered and excited about money. They were even able to do fun things like family vacations again - and that's driven Ashleigh to figure out how money works, and how to make it work for her. All of the insights she learnt from her parents have led her to today. Ashleigh's advice is to think of “that girl” - picturing the best version of yourself, whether that means going for your daily run, or eating a salad for lunch, and thinking about how purchases will support you in getting to that level. For Ashleigh, there's no shame or guilt in buying new running shoes for that run, or the food that fuels you in a healthy way - and if you do feel guilt about something, she says you need to ask yourself where the shame is coming from, and if it's truly coming from yourself or something you might have learned somewhere else. You have to unlearn negative mindsets and get educated on these topics to help you be informed instead of just influenced by whatever else you've picked up along the way. We naturally move away from pain, and towards pleasure. Being clear about what you want, and why you want it, will help you spend more intuitively and to be truly happy with your finances - as well as the things you're spending your money on. You can get in the flow with money by inviting it in, welcoming it, and creating a home in yourself where that flow can live. Everyone is capable of making money if you can change your mindset around it! Ashleigh's Bio With a background as an elementary school teacher and an online English teacher, I knew I was destined for bigger and better things. Exhausted and unfulfilled from all of the hard work I was doing as a teacher during the day, I knew there had to be more out there for me! Seeing my husband, friends and mentors create businesses for themselves as entrepreneurs- I knew I had to go all in and make my dream of owning my own business a reality. I wanted to work the hours that fit my lifestyle, collaborate with dream clients that I deeply connect with, while also gaining financial freedom and creating generational wealth for my family in the future. I am on a mission to help others shift their mindset of what's possible for them by showing them how to build a business and build wealth at the same time!  Social Handles:  IG: @typea_virtual and @_ashmoneyrecords_ Website: www.typeavirtual.com Check out “Broke Millenial” by Erin Lowry: https://brokemillennial.com/get-the-book/

Shang (pronounced "shUng") is a badass stock investor who hit FI at age 31 in NYC. Shang bravely shares their IVF journey to have their beautiful baby boy. Shang has taught me so much, from how to negotiate to ways to keep the #igetto attitude despite all the changes life WILL throw your way. We open by talking life in COVID. She makes me greatly appreciate NOT having to deal with the rules and regulations of real estate in NYC. We deep dive into how to always negotiate when considering a new job. Shang shares that you should always negotiate (especially the ladies), always be interviewing and that negotiating a better bonus may be the way to go. We both strongly agree that choosing a career field based on passion is simply a bad idea, even thought permeates our culture today. Shang dives into who should and should not use a financial advisor. She gives us some amazing books to read -- my personal favorite, The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins, The Broke Millenial's Take on Investing and Boggleheads Guide to Investing. And how, for the average investor, getting an average rate of return is WAY more simple than you think. While financial advisors get all the hype, we think the real MVPs are good CPAs, aka tax people. My FAVORITE part is our deep dive into expense ratios. I pick Shang's brain on using traditional vs. Roth retirement accounts Shang gives us her take on paying off the mortgage vs. investing in real estate (hitting on the classic 5% rule of personal finance … and we agree that, in America, your primary residence tends to be a terrible investment (and may not even be a true asset!) Here is my all-time favorite explanation of why the home you live in may not be AS great as an investment as it seems) We wrap up talking about FIRE as a lifestyle, not just a buzz word. Plus how to choose gurus who truly have your best interests in mind. I hope you all enjoy Shang as much as I always do, and I bet she will have you googling something after this podcast. She talks about how she learned about finances at a young age, how she gave up her dream school so she could live her dream life, and how living in New York inspired her to write her book, Broke Millenial. "Invest your spare change," may be a catchy line but you really can't invest your spare change to wealth. It has to be more than spare change. In the financial world, you are above nothing. Just because you have a college education doesn't mean that is your way out of financial difficulty. You also need to be prepared to take non-professional jobs or jobs that might be below you. Just like in any financial goal you have to figure out how to take a high-level idea and break it down into smaller parts. Think of whatever your long-term financial goals are and work backwards to break it down into something that is actually more achievable. A lot of people in their early twenties have beautiful, lofty dreams but no tangible steps on how to get themselves there. Podcasts are great sources of information. Saving is important but earning more is bigger. To earn more is a key part of building wealth. The biggest thing when it comes to feeling in control of your money is that you have to identify what you truly value. Don't allow other people to dictate where you should spend your money. A special happy hour as we welcome Erin Lowry, personal finance expert and author of the new book Broke Millennial – Stop Scraping by and Get your Financial Life Together. Erin will always hold a special place in my heart and for this show as she was actually the first guest ever of Martinis and Your Money. She joins me and the ladies to talk about the book and we all discuss lessons we’ve learned in our 20s and now here’s my friends. I hope you enjoyed this happy hour. I think my biggest takeaway is that it’s clearly important to focus on money as early as you can and if you’re in your 20s listening to this, don’t let time pass you by, but equally important, if you haven’t started, there’s always time and hopefully the lessons we’ve learned along our way will help you along your way no matter where or when you’re starting your journey to financial health and well-being. If you have any topics you would like for us to talk about during happy hour, please feel free to email me shannon@finblonde.com or tweet @blonde_finance or join the private Martinis and Your Money Facebook group and let us know. And until next time, CHEER!
