Berkeley Talks
The complicated role of media in motherhood

In the early 20th century, prominent figures in psychology, psychiatry and pediatrics in the U.S. began to promote a new standard for mothers: that they should serve as a constant, unchanging and wholly nurturing presence in their children's lives. It was the best way, they claimed, to raise healthy and successful children. This ideal marked a shift away from earlier traditions where caregiving was often distributed among extended family members, hired help and community. In her new book, Mother Media: Hot and Cool Parenting in the Twentieth Century, UC Berkeley associate professor Hannah Zeavin explores how the new ideal of constant mothering was advanced by the mind sciences during the rise of the nuclear family and became especially powerful for white, middle-class mothers.Yet this expectation was both unrealistic and deeply shaped by issues of race and class, says Zeavin, who spoke last month at a Berkeley Book Chats event hosted by the Townsend Center for the Humanities. As more mothers entered the workforce and social changes disrupted older forms of caregiving, media researchers began to explore whether technology could step in, imagining devices — first, baby monitors and later, TVs and tablets — as substitutes for, or supplements to, maternal care. In this Berkeley Talks episode, Zeavin discusses how these ideals and interventions — defining the “perfect mother,” substituting media for maternal presence and punishing deviations from the norm — continue to influence American family life today.Watch a video of the conversation, which was moderated by Ramsey McGlazer, associate professor in the Department of Comparative Literature.Listen to the episode and read the transcript on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts/berkeley-talks).Music by HoliznaCC0.Screenshot of the Mother Media book cover. Listen to Part 1 If you haven't listened to Part 1 of this conversation, go back and start there to hear Ashton's full journey through infertility, endometriosis, IVF, her loss at 16 weeks, and how she discovered that fitness was masking unprocessed trauma. Link to Part 1: https://www.sharnasouthan.com/podcasts/what-i-wish-i-knew-beyond-pregnancy-loss/episodes/2149104398 Welcome to Part 2 of my conversation with Ashton Koehlmoos—if you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, go back and start there to hear Ashton's full story of infertility, loss at 16 weeks, and her journey through the fitness industry's gaps. In this powerful continuation, we dive deep into the physiological reality of trauma—how it literally changes the way you breathe, how your shoulders curl in to protect your heart, and why your pelvic floor remembers what your mind tries to forget. Ashton shares the practical, body-based strategies that helped her rebuild trust with her body, and offers hope and guidance for anyone facing the terrifying prospect of pregnancy after loss. In this episode, we explore: The physical manifestation of trauma: How Ashton's shoulders curled in, restricting her breathing and oxygen flow to her brain The power of breath: Understanding diaphragmatic breathing and why it feels like suffocating at first when you've been in survival mode CO2 tolerance: Why trauma keeps us in an "inhaled state" and how to slowly restore your body's natural breathing rhythm The pelvic floor-diaphragm connection: How shallow breathing shuts off your body's natural stabilization system The 6-9 month healing timeline: Why breath work and reconnection take time (and that's okay) Loss IS postpartum: Why every pregnancy ends in postpartum—whether your baby is in your arms or not The missing postpartum care for loss moms: How to honor your body's healing regardless of how long you carried Exercise myths during pregnancy: Debunking outdated advice and understanding what's actually supported by research The paralysis of pregnancy after loss: Working with fear, movement, and rebuilding safety incrementally Cause and effect thinking: Why we blame ourselves and how to release the guilt Finding trauma-informed support: What to look for in a coach who can hold both worlds Following your intuition: How to reconnect with your body's wisdom when it feels silenced Ashton's most powerful wisdom? "You don't have anything to prove to your body. It has not failed you. It is perfectly made. You're just in a rough patch right now. Follow your intuition—it's your body speaking to you, and it's never going to steer you wrong." This episode is essential listening for anyone navigating pregnancy after loss, working through unprocessed trauma, or trying to understand why their body feels different after loss. Ashton's approach is compassionate, evidence-based, and deeply rooted in honoring what your body has been through. Key moments from this episode between Sharna & Ashton On the Physical Reality of Trauma: After loss, Ashton's shoulders curled forward, protecting her heart. This restricted her lungs, diminishing oxygen flow to her brain—causing brain fog, difficulty thinking clearly, and an inability to make decisions. This wasn't "in her head"—it was a physiological response to trauma. On Breathing and Survival Mode: When we're in trauma, we exist in an "inhaled state"—shallow, rapid breathing that keeps oxygen in our system but never allows for a full exhale. This keeps us in fight-flight-freeze mode. Learning to exhale fully can feel like suffocating at first because our bodies have become so accustomed to holding onto oxygen. On Loss and Postpartum: "Every pregnancy ends in postpartum—whether you have your baby at home, in your arms, or not. Women who experience loss don't see themselves as postpartum, but we do have to honor the healing of the body and the pregnancy it had. All pregnancy ends in loss, and we need to honor that healing timeline." On Pregnancy After Loss: "There is no research that supports a correlation between exercise and causing loss. In fact, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of articles supporting the benefits of exercise in a healthy pregnancy. But what is safe and appropriate for pregnancy might not feel safe to you—and that's a massive gray area that needs to be honored." On Rebuilding Trust: "Movement might come from 'Can you walk down your driveway and back? How did that make you feel?' Then we add another layer. This is where it gets very individualized. If not doing anything is what feels safe to you, be okay with that and let the anxiety go." You don't need to hustle harder, you need to stay hungrier. Because hustle burns you out, but hunger builds your legacy. Too many women are confusing drive with depletion. You've been told you either have to grind 24/7 or chill and “trust the universe,” but that's the trap that keeps you stuck. This episode will help you find your fire again—the kind that's rooted in purpose, not panic. In this episode, I'm diving into: The difference between hustle and hunger—and why only one will sustain you long-term How to stay ambitious without slipping into burnout or overwork Why comfort and safety can quietly kill your hunger if you're not careful How to channel your fire into focused, aligned action instead of fear-based urgency What it looks like to work hard without losing your joy, purpose, or power This one's for the women who know they're meant for more, but refuse to build success that costs them their peace.

Dr. Sell explains the five biological laws discovered by Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer—laws that reveal symptoms as purposeful adaptations, not random malfunctions. Together they challenge conventional and even holistic health models, asking: what if illness isn't something to fight, but something to understand? From Kaylor's chronic strep throat story to the emotional roots of cancer, this episode will push your perspective on healing, belief, and biology itself.   Episode Highlights: German New Medicine, mind-body connection, illness as adaptation, subconscious conflicts, holistic health, emotional healing, self-awareness, chronic illness patterns, psychosomatic roots, belief systems, victim mindset, biological laws       Takeaways:   Disease may be the body's biological adaptation, not malfunction Conflicts in the psyche can manifest as physical symptoms Western medicine treats symptoms, not root causes Healthy lifestyles help, but don't resolve inner conflicts Self-awareness and emotional resolution can support true healing Fear of toxins and germs may itself trigger symptoms Conscious living and belief work are keys to wellness     If this episode lit a fire under you, don't keep it to yourself. Movement is medicine for all of us, but its power is crystalized by its impact on the progression of the neurodegenerative Parkinson's Disease. In this conversation, fitness instructor Ashlee Grieb and Kathleen Featherston—who lives with Parkinson's—reveal how consistent group exercise doesn't just build physical strength, it actively slows disease progression, supports brain health, and creates life-sustaining community connections. You'll discover why showing up matters more than perfection, how early Parkinson's symptoms often hide for years, and why moving your body is one of the most powerful tools for fighting chronic illness. Their message is clear: the gym isn't just about getting fit—it's about fighting back, finding joy, and building relationships that heal. LET'S TALK THE WALK! Are you loving it? Send Ash a text! Even after I slowed down, healed, lost 40 pounds, and felt like a brand-new human, the old patterns still tiptoed back in. Not the dramatic face-down-on-the-floor kind of burnout, just the sneaky version that makes you pause and say, “Oh, interesting… you again?” It was enough to make me curious. This part-two debrief is me pulling back the curtain on why urgency creeps in even after rest, how cortisol becomes our go-to fuel source, and the small, doable resets that actually change the pattern without blowing up your entire life. Think of it as the gentle, real-life guide to breaking the burnout cycle… and all the tiny daily shifts that we all need.TOPICS & TANGENTS:• When old patterns creep back after rest • Cortisol addiction and why stress starts to feel like energy • How “busy” becomes an identity we get praised for • Childhood wiring: control, chaos, and early responsibility • Relational fawning: regulating everyone but yourself • The urgency we learn young (and why I still watch our mornings) • Tiny resets that help: the 90-second nothing timer, sense grounding, and vagus-nerve hums • Values vs. ideals: hearing your life tell the truth • The Somatic Wealth Framework: Regulate, Reflect, RewirePOINT OF THE STORY:You can't out-sabbatical a nervous system pattern. Girlfriend, it's time for some real talk. If you keep saying you want recovery but your actions don't match your words, this episode is your wake-up call. Host Lindsey Nichol delivers tough love with compassion as she breaks down the truth: there are two types of people in this world - those with reasons and those with results. Which one are you? In this powerful episode, Lindsey shares her own struggle with desperately wanting recovery while still restricting, lying to her treatment team, and choosing the "safe" option every single time. She'll teach you how one simple shift - replacing "I can't" with "I won't" - can completely transform your recovery journey by helping you own your choices and reclaim your power. If you're tired of making excuses, breaking promises to yourself, and staying stuck in the same cycle, this is the episode that will challenge you to finally show up for yourself and your family. In This Episode, You'll Learn: The Two Types of People Framework: Those with REASONS vs those with RESULTS - which one are you? Why having a list of excuses keeps you stuck in disordered eating patterns How to shift from wanting recovery to DOING recovery The "I Can't" vs "I Won't" Truth Bomb: Why "I can't" gives away your power and keeps you playing victim How replacing "I can't" with "I won't" creates awareness and ownership The massive difference between these two phrases in your recovery journey Lindsey's Personal Story: When she desperately wanted to get better but her actions didn't match How she was still restricting while saying she wanted freedom The moment she realized she was tired of her own BS and didn't want to be a statistic What finally shifted her from reasons to results The Reality Check You Need: Why your fear isn't protecting you - it's imprisoning you How every broken promise reinforces the belief that you can't trust yourself The truth about what breaking promises is really doing to your recovery Key Takeaways: ✨ There are two types of people: those with reasons and those with results - you get to choose which one you'll be ✨ "I can't" is a lie - what you really mean is "I won't" and that's a choice you have power over ✨ Wanting recovery and DOING recovery are completely different things - listening to podcasts isn't the same as taking action ✨ You cannot want recovery more than you want the eating disorder - your actions reveal what you truly want ✨ Your recovery isn't just for you - it's for your family too - they need to see you model what keeping promises looks like ✨ Every action you take is a vote for who you're becoming - what are you voting for today? Powerful Quotes from This Episode: "Recovery isn't happening because you keep breaking promises to yourself" "There are two types of people in this world - those with reasons and those with results" "Every time you say 'I can't,' what you really mean is 'I won't'" "My desires and my future wants didn't match my daily actions" "I was tired of my own BS. I didn't want to be a statistic" "Wanting recovery and DOING recovery are two completely different things" "Your fear is not protecting you. It's imprisoning you" "You cannot want recovery more than you want the eating disorder" "Your family can't see what you're not modeling" "You are one decision away from a completely different life" "Those with reasons stay stuck. Those with results change their lives" Featured Wisdom: Brené Brown: "You either walk inside your story and own it, or you stand outside your story and hustle for your worthiness." James Clear (Atomic Habits): "Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become." Mel Robbins: "You are one decision away from a completely different life." Important Truth: Did you know? Eating disorders have the HIGHEST mortality rate of any mental illness. This isn't small. This is life and death. If you're stuck in the cycle of wanting recovery but not doing recovery, it's time to get honest about what's at stake. Your Two Challenges (Do Them NOW): Challenge #1: The "I Won't" Awareness Exercise For the next 24 hours, every time you catch yourself saying "I can't," PAUSE. Take a breath. Replace it with "I won't." Examples: "I can't eat that" → "I won't eat that" "I can't rest today" → "I won't rest today" "I can't be honest right now" → "I won't be honest right now" Notice how different that FEELS. When you admit it's a choice, you suddenly have the power to make a different one. Challenge #2: Make ONE Promise and Keep It Just ONE. Not ten. Not a complete recovery overhaul. ONE promise. Maybe it's: "I will eat breakfast tomorrow, even if it scares me" "I will take a rest day this week" "I will order something different at the restaurant" "I will tell my therapist one true thing I've been hiding" Write it down. Then DO IT. Prove to yourself that you're someone who keeps promises. Reflection Questions to Journal On: What excuses have I been using to avoid recovery? Where is the gap between what I SAY I want and what I'm actually DOING? What promises have I been breaking to myself? Am I someone with reasons or someone with results? What am I voting for with my choices today? What type of person am I becoming based on my current actions? What's ONE promise I can make and keep today? If I'm honest with myself, do I want recovery more than I want the eating disorder? Who This Episode Is For: This episode is your wake-up call and reality check if you: Keep saying you want recovery but your actions don't match Have a list of excuses for why "now isn't the right time" Break promises to yourself regularly Lie to your treatment team about what you're really doing Choose the "safe" option every single time Say "I can't" more than you take action Want to be present for your family but feel trapped Are tired of making excuses and ready for results Need tough love mixed with fierce support Want to stop being a statistic and start living in freedom The Bottom Line: You have everything you need to recover. You have the desire. You have the resources. You have the support. The only thing standing between you and freedom is YOU. Your family needs you. Your future needs you. And most importantly, YOU need you. So stop playing small. Stop breaking promises. Stop saying "I can't" when you mean "I won't." Because those with reasons stay stuck. But those with RESULTS? They change their lives. Which one are you going to be? Ready to Stop Breaking Promises and Start Living Free? Lindsey has spots open for one-on-one recovery coaching. Your emails aren't broken, they're just getting blocked before they even reach people. Gmail, Outlook, and AI tools like Copilot read every line before your audience does. They're not looking for design, they're scanning tone, emotion, and trust. In this episode of Branding Momentum, we're decoding why perfectly good marketing emails are landing in Promotions or Spam, and how to write messages that actually reach humans again. You'll learn which words trigger AI filters, how tone affects deliverability, and what still gets through when automation is reading your content first. If your open rates are dropping or your list feels silent, this is the missing piece. I'm Veronica Di Polo, a marketing strategist based in Moraira, Spain. I help service-based business owners get leads with words that sell.
