Laura Vanderkam is a successful author of many time-management and productivity books and a mother of 5 children. Laura's work has appeared in the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Fast Company and Fortune. Many have an adversarial relationship with time, constantly trying to beat the clock, issues rooted in a fear that time is scarce and must be obsessed over, hoarded, and ultraoptimized. What if there is a different way to view time? One that could make our hours feel abundant. We break down Laura's new book, 'Big Time. A Simple Path to Time Abundance', in which she shares how we can have more than enough time to advance our careers, relationships, hobbies, and health, be a mum to five kids, and more, simply by changing our approach and mindset to time. As families throughout the world look forward to celebrating the Easter season, I am overwhelmed with many warm thoughts and memories. Memories of the place where all the events of holy week took place are so real and meaningful to me. Many times I relive that experience of walking the Via Dolorosa, also known as the Way of Sorrows, when I was there on my pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We are all pilgrims, and an unknown author wrote the following prayerful thoughts.A Pilgrim's PrayerLord Jesus Christ, you were once a pilgrim in the Holy Land. We too have come as pilgrims to journey with you into the desert to listen to the powerful word of the God of Israel, spoken in our own deserts. We follow you into Galilee, to understand and experience your ministry of presence and healing. We come up to Jerusalem to join the great crowd that came to meet you crying, Hosanna, blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! We walk with you on the road to Golgotha, and share in your passion, seeing you nailed to the cross, we bow down before your suffering and dying. We journey with you on the road to Emmaus, and discover you in the breaking and sharing of the word and the bread. Show us the glory of your resurrection. Open our eyes, our hearts, and our minds, so that we may find you not only in ancient stones, but in the midst of your holy people, and among all those who thirst for you wherever they may be. Write your gospel upon our hearts, send us forth carrying the good news. Continue to lead us and guide us on our pilgrimage to the heavenly Jerusalem.More thoughts to ponder: A Simple Path by Mother Theresa. The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, the fruit of service is peace. Are you a high-earning dentist… living paycheck to paycheck? Do you ever feel financially stretched – despite earning well? Are you trapped in dentistry's “golden handcuffs”? And what would your life look like if you worked because you wanted to… not because you had to? In this rare solo episode, Jaz steps away from occlusion and restorative dentistry to talk about something just as important: personal finances and career security for dentists. After going deep down the money rabbit hole — reading books like Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Simple Path to Wealth, and I Will Teach You To Be Rich — Jaz shares how his upbringing, early career decisions, and financial education shaped his beliefs about wealth, freedom, and dentistry. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://fitaxguy.com/the-four-backstops-to-the-four-percent-rule/ Quotes to ponder: "Spending in retirement can be adjusted." "There is a natural reduction in energy and interest in certain kinds of spending as one ages." "If her portfolio is struggling to produce the amount Melinda needs to live off of, Social Security payments provide a backstop and can help make up the difference." #624: JL Collins doesn't know what the efficient frontier is. The author of "The Simple Path to Wealth" — the guy synonymous with VTSAX and chill — admits this right off the bat when we challenge him with advanced investing concepts. Collins joins us for Part 1 of a two-part series where we skip the basics and dive straight into the complex stuff. We grill him on whether his simple approach actually beats more sophisticated strategies, and his answer might surprise you. He concedes that Paul Merriman's four-fund portfolio probably outperforms his one-fund approach mathematically. But Collins argues that execution trumps optimization every time. Most people can't stick with complex strategies for 20 years, especially when those strategies require selling winners to buy losers – something that goes against human nature. Collins prioritizes what works in real life over what looks good on paper. He calls index funds "self-cleansing" because they automatically rotate out failing companies and sectors while rotating in the new winners. You don't need to predict which companies will dominate next – you'll own whatever rises to the top. The episode covers his thoughts on VTSAX versus VTI, international diversification, and why he'd rather put Tabasco than Cholula on his eggs — his quirky way of explaining personal preferences in nearly identical investment options. [Timestamp: 00:09:31] "A stock market crash is a gift." [Timestamp: 00:35:31]
The Simple Path to Wealth is arguably the most influential book in the FIRE movement. JL Collins, its author, is revered among early retirees as one of the trailblazers for FIRE, showing that anyone, with the right investing consistency, can reach financial independence WITHOUT complicated investing strategies, risky alternative assets, or individual stock picking. This is THE simplest way to wealth, but does it still work in 2025? To see, we had to ask the man himself. So, back again, is JL Collins! Today, we're answering the big questions many FIRE chasers still ask. What's the right portfolio balance when growing wealth vs. retiring, does JL hold bonds or 100% index funds, should we be worried about all-time-high price-to-earnings ratios, and do you EVER need to rebalance your portfolio? JL answers them all, plus gives Scott his honest take on what a market crash would mean for his portfolio. But what about real estate, cryptocurrency, and other alternative assets? Is there any space in your portfolio for those, or should you only invest in index funds and bonds? JL has some advice you might not expect, but it could help you if you're itching to diversify. Want to learn more about The Simple Path to Wealth? Pre-order the updated version, The Simple Path to Wealth (Revised & Expanded 2025 Edition), today! In This Episode We Cover The “simple” path to wealth, FIRE, and early retirement explained JL's exact stock/bond ratio while in retirement (and where yours should be) Are Scott's concerns about price-to-earnings ratios valid?
