The Public Servants Association has officially proposed a hybrid work from home model for South Africa's public sector. The union says rising fuel, food, electricity and medical aid costs are placing severe financial pressure on workers. It argues that flexible work arrangements, proven during the COVID-19 pandemic, can ease commuting costs while maintaining productivity. The PSA says hybrid work could also reduce government spending on office operations and utilities. Bongiwe Zwane spoke to the Public Servants Association general manager Reuben Maleka

Trumped Up Tomatoes Cost 40% More Tomatoes are about to get a lot more expensive, and most Americans have no idea why. This week, I retreat to the kitchen to make a comforting vegan tomato soup, but even there, politics has a way of finding us. The biggest inflation story in food right now isn't beef, eggs, or milk—it's tomatoes. Prices are rising fast, and policy decisions could make them climb even higher. So while we chop, stir, blend, and cook, we'll also talk about the real-world impact of politics on your grocery bill, along with the latest headlines from entertainment, current events, and the never-ending news cycle. Sometimes the best way to survive a chaotic week is with a warm bowl of soup and an honest conversation.
Inflation hit a three-year high as energy, gasoline and food prices continued to rise, according to new Department of Labor data. In this sermon, Pastor Aaron preaches this main point: The reward of a life on mission is worth everything you have to give.
The Great Disconnect: Record Wealth, Record Hardship The economy is supposedly thriving. The stock market is breaking records. Corporate profits are soaring. Yet millions of Americans are struggling to pay rent, buy groceries, fill up their gas tanks, and save for the future. How can oil companies post enormous profits while gas prices remain painfully high? Why are food giants reporting strong earnings while grocery bills continue to climb? Why are hotels charging resort fees and parking fees on top of already expensive rooms? And how did a modest California home that once sold for $27,000 end up costing nearly $900,000? Meanwhile, political rhetoric grows more disconnected from reality. Claims of election fraud, accusations of rigged systems, and endless partisan battles leave many wondering whether common sense has completely disappeared from public life. In this episode, Karel takes a hard look at the contradictions defining modern America: record corporate profits, record asset values, and record financial anxiety for everyday people. Has the world stopped making sense, or are we finally paying attention to how the system really works? Join the conversation and tell us what you think in the comments below. The cost of living was a key focus in the 2023 election. Three years on, are households feeling any better about it? Money correspondent Susan Edmunds has been looking at how our financial lives compare and spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
Is your city making you poor?
The Labour Leader is disappointed by how things are playing out for the senior police officer who's chosen to run for Parliament. Superintendent Rakesh Naidoo —the Police's national partnerships manager— has been revealed as the 13th ranked candidate on Labour's list. Commissioner Richard Chambers says he only learned of Naidoo's candidacy on Sunday afternoon, and his position is now untenable. Chris Hipkins told Heather du Plessis-Allan that he's disappointed for Naidoo, who's done everything right. He says he acted with the utmost integrity through the process, and has worked very hard to preserve the political independence of the police. Hipkins also says Labour won't be making any announcement about tax this week. The party leader revealed his candidate list yesterday. Newcomer Kingi Kiriona suggested Labour could be releasing policy on tax relief in the coming days. But Hipkins told du-Plessis Allan Kiriona misspoke, and the policy is actually about cost-of-living relief. While he can't reveal the details just yet, he can confirm it will have an impact on households. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jeremy Cordeaux returns to the garage with a fiery critique of the Albanese Government, examining plunging Newspoll numbers, controversial tax changes, housing affordability, and what he sees as serious failures in economic management. Jeremy argues that proposed tax reforms and attacks on investment are already hurting Australia's housing market, warning of rising rents and lower auction clearance rates. He also takes a deep dive into the AUKUS submarine program, comparing it to the abandoned French submarine deal and questioning whether taxpayers are getting value for money from Australia's largest-ever defence procurement project. Jeremy reflects on billions already spent with little to show for it and calls for greater transparency around defence spending. ACT plans to campaign on reducing the cost of school uniforms at state schools by allowing a maximum of three branded items. School Board Association President Meredith Kennet recognises the high costs of some uniforms but explains that it is not a decision for the Government to be making. "It is a school board decision on how a school is governed and the policies that are in place, so it's not actually something currently that the government really should be saying," she told Andrew Dickens. Jackie Jantos, CEO of Hinge, says the cost of living is reshaping dating habits, with daytime meet-ups becoming more common and traditional drinks dates becoming less popular as younger people look for cheaper ways to meet in person. She argues that AI should help users express themselves rather than speak on their behalf, rejecting suggestions that AI is making online dating less authentic. Hinge has introduced a range of AI-powered tools, including features that help users improve profiles, start conversations and reconsider potentially offensive messages before sending them. Jantos defends these interventions, saying they encourage reflection rather than creating a filtered version of users online.Jantos says it "breaks her heart" that some young people are turning to AI chatbots for emotional support instead of confiding in friends, arguing that difficult conversations and human connection remain essential parts of building relationships. She points to research showing high levels of loneliness among Gen Z and says younger generations are spending significantly less time together in person than previous cohorts.Jantos also discusses the wider dating-app industry, arguing that Hinge is continuing to grow despite broader challenges across the sector. Trump Is Losing. Why Does America Feel Like It's Losing Too? Donald Trump keeps taking hits. His proposed projects are stalling. Legal troubles continue to mount. Poll numbers are sliding. Key initiatives face growing opposition. Even on major international issues, his answers seem increasingly detached from the realities Americans face every day. By many measures, Donald Trump is losing. But if Trump is losing, why does it feel like America is losing too? For millions of Americans, life is becoming harder, not easier. Housing costs remain out of reach. Grocery prices continue to strain family budgets. Political divisions are deeper than ever. Washington remains gridlocked while everyday people struggle to build stable, secure lives. So what happens if Trump's setbacks don't translate into victories for the rest of us? Today, Karel examines the uncomfortable reality that one politician's losses don't automatically become America's wins. More importantly, we'll explore what real success looks like for ordinary Americans—and how we can create it regardless of who occupies the White House. Are we trapped in a cycle where everyone loses? Or is there a path forward that neither political party seems willing to discuss? Join the conversation. This week's budget announcement had a focus on sorting out the books, and no straight sugar hits for individuals.Infrastructure, healthcare and education seemed to be the clear priority of our fiscal plan, but three relief for the cost-of-living pressure many face. Along with that, council rates have gone up for Auckland and the South Island's West Coast, and the Reserve Bank's signalled that there will be an increase to the OCR shortly - so the period we've seen of low interest rates on a mortgage is coming to an end. So how can we prepare ourselves for a toughening economy? Was it good that we didn't have any government handouts? On the campaign trail and from the Oval Office, President Trump billed tariffs as a means to reclaim America's historic role as a manufacturing powerhouse. But more than a year since his imposition of significant import taxes, the benefits are uncertain. Manufacturing jobs in the U.S. have fallen by about 100,000, or roughly 0.6%, since the start of Trump's second term. For our special What's News series The Cost-of-Living Election, WSJ national politics reporter Sabrina Siddiqui met union workers, manufacturing executives and everyday voters in and around Cleveland, Ohio, to uncover what tariffs mean for the economy and the state's upcoming primary elections. She then explores the potency of tariffs as a political issue with reporters Aaron Zitner and Gavin Bade. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
