What happens when political language becomes so distorted that anyone opposing Donald Trump is branded as “lawless,” “Antifa,” or even an “insurrectionist”? In this episode, Brad and Dan unpack how these labels have become empty signifiers... tools for dismissing dissent and consolidating power under what they call the “rule of Trump.” They break down recent Senate hearings, including Pam Bondi's heated appearance, as a case study in this rhetorical shift. The hosts examine how religious and constitutional language are being weaponized to legitimize political actions and blur the line between patriotism and partisanship. Brad and Dan also reflect on the murder of Charlie Kirk and the troubling way his image is being used for both political and theological capital. The conversation turns to Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker's call for state resistance to federal overreach, prompting a deeper look at how “states' rights” has evolved (and been repurposed) throughout American history. Retired Ontario Justice Harry LaForme isn't entirely comfortable with the label of “ally,” which many Jewish leaders have been using to describe him since Oct. 7. After all, LaForme—who was the first Indigenous Canadian to be appointed to the highest court in any province—says he always felt a kinship with the Jewish people, ever since his family told him his First Nations people were one of the lost tribes of Israel. But over the last two years, the trailblazing lawyer and judge, 78, has become a frequently honoured guest in official Jewish spaces, earning thanks and praise for his outspoken condemnation of rising antisemitism here in Canada, and for his his support for Israel—which he calls the indigenous homeland of the Jewish people. It's a view that isn't universal in Canada's Indigenous community, and LaForme gets pushback for his stance. He's aware of the perceived parallels between the First Nations' centuries-long struggle to overcome the legacy of Canada's colonial-settler past and the Palestinian battle for their own land and destiny. But LaForme says conflating the two issues is anathema to his religious beliefs about peaceful reconciliation. That's why he's come out in strong opposition to Canada's recognition of the State of Palestine last week, the day before Rosh Hashanah. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner sits down with Justice LaForme to share his life journey, including a recent trip to Tel Aviv. In her formal response to the government's motion, Ghislaine Maxwell opposed the unsealing of grand jury transcripts in her criminal case, arguing that such a release would violate long-standing principles of grand jury secrecy and unfairly prejudice her rights. Her legal team emphasized that the transcripts in question contain sensitive testimony and confidential material that should remain protected under Rule 6(e) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure. Maxwell's attorneys insisted that the government's request lacked compelling justification and that releasing the materials would serve no legitimate public interest while potentially influencing public perception and undermining her right to a fair trial.Furthermore, Maxwell's response accused the government of attempting to circumvent established legal norms for tactical purposes. Her defense argued that any disclosure could taint potential jurors and further inflame the already intense media scrutiny surrounding her case. They maintained that the government had not demonstrated any exceptional circumstances to override the presumption of secrecy traditionally afforded to grand jury proceedings. In closing, Maxwell's team urged the court to deny the motion and preserve the confidentiality of the grand jury materials to uphold judicial integrity and due process.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:gov.uscourts.nysd.539612.803.0.pdfBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.

In their letter to Judge Subramanian, the defense opposed motions by Mia, Ms. Ventura, and the government seeking to quash compliance with a subpoena directed to Mia, which the Court had previously ordered on May 31, 2025. The defense argued that the objections raised by both Ms. Ventura and the government lacked valid legal grounds and did not justify quashing the subpoena. They contended that Mia's arguments were also without merit, asserting that the subpoena was properly issued under Rule 17(c) and sought relevant, admissible evidence essential to preparing the defense. The defense maintained that the subpoena targeted materials directly related to Mia's credibility and potential biases, which were critical to the cross-examination process. They emphasized that the subpoena did not represent an undue burden or violate any protections afforded to the witness. Instead, they argued that granting the motions to quash would undermine the defendant's right to a fair trial and to confront witnesses.
