Morning Skies: Jupiter (and its 4 Galilean moons) is always beautiful to look at, and can be seen for about 4 hours from about 2am till sunrise Comets: C/2023 R2 Swann – currently in Aquarius, fading, about Mag 5.6, high in evening skies, binoculars C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) – Magnitude 4, near horizon, so difficult. Leonid Meteor shower will be quite poor this year, despite the absence of the moon ☹ Astrophotography Challenge 1. Take photos of the moon at apogee and at perigee using the same camera settings to measure the difference in the moon's apparent size when it is at its closest and furthest from earth 2. Capture the Lunar X Ian's Tangent Comet Atlas is being misrepresented by ‘conspiracy theorists' on social media who claim, without a shred of evidence, that Comet Atlas is an “Interstellar Spacecraft reversing its thrust” There is a long history of comets inducing panic and fear in humans. The Moon barrels through the Pleiades star cluster this evening. It’ll pass directly in front of the cluster, briefly blocking most of its stars from view. The Pleiades is the most famous of all star clusters. It’s also known as the Seven Sisters, but under dark skies – with no Moon in the way – you might actually see nine stars or more. But that’s only the beginning. The cluster contains more than a thousand stars. In fact, it was the first cluster to be recognized as a cluster – a group that’s moving through the galaxy together. That recognition came in 1767. John Mitchell, a clergyman and scientist, was looking at several tightly packed groups of stars. He studied the Pleiades in the greatest detail. And he calculated that there was only a one-in-500,000 chance that the grouping could be random. Instead, something had to be holding the stars together. His idea was confirmed when astronomers measured the motions of the cluster’s stars. They’re all moving in the same direction, and at the same speed. Today, we know that’s because they were born together, from a single giant complex of dust and gas. They’re bound to each other by their mutual gravitational pull. But they won’t stay together. The cluster is being pulled apart by the gravity of the rest of the galaxy. So the Pleiades probably will dissipate in about 250 million years – with its member stars going their own way. The bull is charging into the evening sky. Taurus is in full view by about 11 o’clock, low in the east. He stands high in the south before dawn. He’s rising earlier each night, and will be in view all night long by about Thanksgiving. All the stars rise four minutes earlier each night – a result of Earth’s motion around the Sun. Earth makes one full turn on its axis against the background of distant stars every 23 hours and 56 minutes. So, if you looked at the sky every 23 hours and 56 minutes, and you could see through the daytime glare, you’d always see the same stars in the same position. But during that period, Earth moves along its orbit around the Sun. The distance it covers means the planet has to turn four extra minutes for the Sun to reach the same position in the sky. That makes a day 24 hours long. And it also means that the background stars rise and set four minutes earlier on our 24-hour clock. As a result, every star and constellation is in prime evening view at different times of the year. For Taurus, it’s fall and early winter – the time the bull charges across the evening sky. For now, look for Taurus beginning in late evening. Its brightest star is Aldebaran, the bull’s eye. His face is outlined by a V-shaped pattern of stars to the upper right of Aldebaran. Summer scrambled us, Slushies, from UAE to North Carolina, from D.C. to Scotland and back, from North Carolina to New York City, and to Philly, of course. Phew! Sam has just returned after a month-long residency through the Hawthornden Foundation in Scotland in an actual castle where she worked on her novel. The crew came together on Zoom to discuss two poems by Elvira Basevich, “Beautiful Girls” and “Pallas Athena”. The first poem transports Kathy and Marion to their teenage days on the Jersey shore. For Marion, the ending of the poem with its Beauty in the bathroom mirror, recalls the energy of Ada Limón's “How to Triumph like a Girl”.     The discussion of “Pallas Athena” notes the poem's foresight to mark a memory as it's made, which sends Marion to Wordsworth's Tintern Abbey and has Lisa mis-marking that poem as the one with daffodils. Imagining the future while in the past also reminds Marion of André Aciman's discussion of arbitrage and Tintern Abbey in the New Yorker. All these  years later, even without the hours of applying makeup  in the bathroom mirror, matching mesh crop tops to low risers, taking selfies, I feel so beautiful.  I don't mean that metaphorically, as in Plato's description  of a beautiful soul as a chariot pulled by two winged  horses, but the real, pulsating thing: the Beauty  who looks back from the bathroom mirror and smiles.   PALLAS ATHENA   We tracked deer in the snow, studied philosophy  and mathematics. Like you, I inherited  my father's passions: the love of war, physical beauty,  America's Funniest Home Videos. I can still hear  his laughter in a hotel in upstate New York  on our only family trip. Soviet émigrés with blue hair and adult grandchildren preferred to speak in English and eat hot dogs and hamburgers rather than piroshki and cold cuts with slivers of wobbly jellied fat. We ice skated among pine trees and rooks. Napped in cots before waiting in a buffet line  in a wood-paneled cafeteria. Pallas, that weekend  you took care of me like a big sister.  You showed me a bloom of wildflowers by  the frozen river, a dusk replete with angels,  reminders that this too won't last, but  it will become my favorite memory of my father.  That was your greatest strength: to have  the foresight to remember a moment as it faded.  You didn't judge me when I left all my doors  and windows open and called out to my father,  Come in. That sometimes we don't choose  the angels that we believe in, as a house  does not choose the ghosts who wander its halls.

And not to be intimidated out of that quest through manipulative coercive disempowerment tactics by the powers that be.So we knew from the beginning of this current monthly lunar cycle that it wasn't going to be without its struggles to maintain our individuality against those in power. It's important to remember that the Leo archetype is about not hiding one's light under a bushel, so that one can ultimately contribute one's unique creativity to the group for the purpose of the betterment of humanity. It's also important to understand that this month's lunation was accompanied by the beginning of the long-term trine of Uranus in Gemini to Pluto in Aquarius. And that this airy trine aspect in the sky makes its presence felt from now until the fall of 2028—aside from some brief times when it loosens a bit during that period.And that means that what we're experiencing during this period is a slow evolutionary process accompanied by many “aha!” type moments. We'll also see Uranus retrograde back into 29-degrees Taurus--known as the Pleiades point, associated with blindness—by November 7, though he'll still then maintain an out of sign trine with Pluto in Aquarius. So, Uranian revelations may well include suddenly learning where we've been blinded to what's really been happening as part of Pluto in Aquarius's evolutionary process to empower us all as individuals who stand together. America was built on the “E pluribus unim” motto, which means “out of many, one,” adopted at the signing of America's Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. When the Scorpio Moon squared the Leo Sun August 1 at the waxing first quarter “crisis in action”—which was accompanied by Venus's square to Saturn & Neptune & her quincunx to Pluto—we witnessed the beginning of our understanding that we the people were being manipulated. That's because this is when Donald Trump fired the U.S. Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics that day based on his dislike of the real unemployment numbers he then sought to fabricate into different, better sounding numbers. He also terminated the head of the Internal Revenue Service, again an indication of trying to control numbers, in line with the fact that Mars in Virgo was conjunct the transiting Virgo South Node at the Leo New Moon. After that, the August 9 Aquarius Full Moon square to Juno & Vesta in Scorpio asked us to release any tendencies toward Leo's shadow side. And that meant letting go of any selfish tendencies to disregard the specialness of each individual soul by lumping them together into a group of undesirables. By that time, Trump had re-imposed higher tariffs on 90 different "partner" countries, though by August 11--as Mercury stationed direct again in Leo & Ceres stationed retrograde in Aries (square to the Venus/Jupiter conjunction in Cancer)—he delayed tariffs on China. In other words, he TACO'd out, again…Many reputable financiers & economists predict a rise in the already high prices of imported goods—particularly at the grocery store & via automobile sales, etc. It's clear now that tariffs hurt American consumers as much if not more than foreign producers in the form of increased costs/prices across the board.Now, this week's third quarter “crisis in consciousness” stubborn Taurus Moon, in tension with the monarchical tendencies of the Leo Sun, asks us during the waning portion of this month's lunar cycle to stand our ground against the powers that be that try to define us as “less than.”What we see now on the ground in places like Washington, D.C., as federal troops & the FBI first joined--but now try to supersede the authority of--the local police there, is people beginning to protest against the authoritarian takeover of the U.S. capitol.Going back to the initial message & meaning of this month's lunar cycle since the July 24 Leo New Moon opposite Pluto in Aquarius, we can see now at this waning third-quarter square that we're asked to stand our ground as a wannabe tyrant tries to manipulate & control us all. The want us to believe that resistance in futile, but American history tells us otherwise.The presence of federal troops in U.S. cities reminds us of the time when British monarchy demanded that colonists house British troops in their homes. Known as the Quartering Act of 1774, this became of the Intolerable Acts which helped light the fuse that fueled colonial resentment towards British rule which ultimately contributed to the growing tensions that led to the American Revolution. Hence, the "invasion" of illegal immigrants Trump has used as an excuse to federalize our local police by taking over our cities is actually a federal invasion of citizens' local & state rights as the national government flood cities with federal troops, the FBI, & Immigration & Customs Enforcement's gestapo-like henchmen.In other astro-news, we have also today's "crisis in consciousness" third-quarter lunar square's summit in Anchorage Alaska between Trump & Russia's dictator, Vladimir Putin. Given the astro-energies at play, it seems likely that Putin--who already believes he has the upper hand in any peace talk negotiations--will stand his ground, thus continuing to disempower Zelensky's Ukraine.And given the fawning relationship of Trump to Putin, it's highly likely that Trump will once again flip-flop to turn against Ukraine, especially since the Moon will enter Gemini & conjoin Uranus there on August 16. Perhaps then Trump will drop his quest to be nominated for a Nobel Peace prize for his efforts to bring peace to Ukraine. The Moon and the Seven Sisters huddle up in the wee hours of tomorrow morning. The Moon will “occult” the sisters – the brightest stars of the Pleiades star cluster. The stars form a tiny dipper that marks the shoulder of Taurus, the bull. Occultations have been useful scientific tools. The way a star vanishes, then reappears, can reveal details about both the star and the Moon. If the star fades in steps, that probably means it’s a binary – two stars that orbit each other. The Moon covers up one star a moment before it hides the second one. Several binary systems were discovered this way. Watching an occultation at different wavelengths also reveals details about the individual stars, such as their brightness and temperature. Occultations also have helped map the lunar surface. The Moon isn’t smooth – it’s marked by rugged impact craters, canyons, and mountains. The precise timing of the occultation reveals whether the star was blocked by one of these features. Occultations aren’t quite as important to scientists as they once were. But they’re still interesting to watch – as the Moon “hides” a star. This occultation will be in good view from the central and western parts of the United States, although it occurs a little late for most of the eastern part of the country. For 19 years, Dr. Andrea Martin was a professor at Worcester University in Massachusetts, where she taught many classes, including several on UFO disclosure.  She began having extraterrestrial contact experiences between the ages of 2 and 3, and realized she was a walk-in from the Pleiades.
