Hour 2 (09.28) Hurricane Polo is slamming Mexico’s Pacific coast, Nolo is pounding Hawaii, and El Niño has SoCal on coastal watch — Long Beach looking at monster tides and a flooded boardwalk. Then food: Langer’s by MacArthur Park takes the LA Times Gold, In-N-Out plants four more shops in Chino, Commerce, South El Monte, and Stockton, a man is camped on a Brentwood bus stop, and Fawnskin unveils a Jackie the eagle statue — same mountain town as a Kobe statue? Timmy’s been a “60 Minutes” kid since Andy Rooney (Colgate, like Mark), and Redlands wants bars dark after midnight over a three-year crime bump while liquor stores skate. Closing curveball: 13-year-old Long Island prodigy Joe Petraro-Hyppolite, IQ 168, is already in college and headed to NYU for a master’s. Timmy’s verdict: too young for campus — you can’t keep up with the older kids’ nightlife. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Alcohol marketing regulations are failing to protect children because of clever brand sharing tactics.Partial advertising bans on the sports field and television are easily bypassed. Global alcohol companies use zero alcohol products that look identical to their master brands to maintain continuous brand exposure. Addressing this issue requires examining how youth perceive these ads and exploring the power of comprehensive policy restrictions. This discussion features two prominent academic researchers who investigate public health policy. Hurricane Nolo passed farther south than forecast and spared Hawaii Island the worst case, but flooded roads on the Big Island, prompted five high-water rescues Sunday and knocked out power on Oahu and Maui. A pre-landfall Presidential Emergency Declaration approved Friday covers four counties at a 75 percent federal cost share. On the East Coast, the nor'easter killed a New York City Housing Authority worker struck by a falling tree Saturday in Brooklyn, drove outages past 100,000 customers at their peak, and produced the worst coastal flooding since Sandy at two Jersey Shore tide gauges. New Jersey and New York both declared states of emergency before landfall. The national preparedness level holds at 2 with 69 incidents and 6,003 personnel, down 305, and three new large fires, including one near Benton City, Washington, that destroyed seven structures. The EMN NEWS Daily Brief is your concise daily update on national and state-by-state emergency management news.KEY TAKEAWAYSHawaii outcome: Nolo tracked south of the main islands, with rainfall above 14 inches at the Big Island's highest elevations. Crews worked through Sunday on flooding, debris, high surf and wind. Highway 11 in Kau closed in multiple locations between Pahala and Waiohinu. Hawaii County Civil Defense is asking residents and businesses to report storm damage so agencies and nonprofit partners can assess unmet needs.Hawaii infrastructure: The Hawaii County Department of Water Supply asked customers in affected service areas to limit water to essential health and safety needs, citing power outages and possible damage to water system infrastructure. County solid waste transfer stations in Kauai stayed closed, and the Hele-On Route 90 run to Kona was canceled.Federal declaration: The pre-landfall declaration approved September 25 provides federal assistance for emergency protective measures in the City and County of Honolulu and Hawaii, Maui and Kauai counties, including direct federal assistance, at a 75 percent federal cost share. The State Emergency Operations Center remains at Level 1 full activation with 24-hour staffing, coordinating with FEMA Region IX, the counties and utilities.Get ready, Long Beach!

AP's Lisa Dwyer reports that the Big Island of Hawaii is hunkering down as Hurricane Nolo approaches.
White out conditions in Hilo on this Aloha Friday, as Nolo makes is slow approach to the islands. While the models show Nolo's center will likely remain south of the island chain, catastrophic flash flooding and storm surge are possible for Hawaii County, and the rest of the state could still see some impacts. And pushback for a proposed new voting system for Honolulu elections.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
All eyes on Nolo as it approaches the state. The system is expected to intensify into a hurricane near the islands, the third in just over a month. The slow-moving storm could bring days of heavy rains, strong winds, and catastrophic flash flooding to Hawaii communities still recovering from previous disasters. And with schools and government offices closed, Hawaii Island residents used the day to prepare.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Algunas respuestas probablemente no te gustarán.

Llegó septiembre, mi gente querida, y viene cargado.
