    Ivy Insights

The Play On Podcasts is an exceptional production that brings the works of William Shakespeare to life in a modern and accessible way. As someone who has performed in one of these plays multiple times, I was initially skeptical about how the adaptation would differ from the original dialogue. However, I quickly realized that the thoughtful crafting of the adaptation only enhanced the storytelling. The production values are top-notch, with crisp storytelling and excellent execution in terms of sound design. Listening to this podcast while gardening, I often found myself closing my eyes to fully immerse myself in their imaginative world. The performances and direction are truly remarkable, making this podcast a must-listen for all Shakespeare enthusiasts.

One of the best aspects of The Play On Podcasts is its crystal-clear storytelling. The adaptation stays true to the text while still making it more understandable for modern audiences. This makes it an excellent resource for English teachers looking for curriculum material or anyone wanting to delve into Shakespeare's works. The intricate but never distracting sound design adds depth and atmosphere to the podcast, enhancing the overall experience. Additionally, the use of bagpipes in certain episodes adds a unique and captivating element that sets this podcast apart.

In terms of downsides, it is challenging to find any major flaws with The Play On Podcasts. However, some listeners may argue that deviating from Shakespeare's original dialogue takes away from the authenticity of his work. While this is a valid concern, it's important to recognize that adaptations aim to make these timeless stories more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference whether one prefers a strict adherence to Shakespearean language or appreciates adaptations that bring new life and understanding to his works.

In conclusion, The Play On Podcasts is an outstanding production that presents Shakespeare's plays in a fresh and exciting manner. It successfully combines rigorous translations with captivating performances and exceptional sound design, resulting in an immersive experience for listeners. This podcast is a valuable resource for both educators and fans of Shakespeare, and I eagerly anticipate future episodes that will undoubtedly continue to impress. Kudos to Next Chapter Podcasts for their innovative approach in sharing Shakespeare's works and bringing them into the 21st century.

Seeing he has no chance against Lucentio (AKA “Cambio”), Hortensio drops his “Licio” disguise and swears off women. Biondello, meanwhile, has found an old merchant who will pretend to be Lucentio's father, Vincenzio, so that Lucentio can marry Bianca without getting his real father's permission. Meanwhile, Katherine wakes in the comfort of Petruchio's home and is further smitten as he describes the goings-on at his farm. Later, Baptista gets all rights to Vinzentio's property from the man he thinks is Lucentio's father but is really the old and very agreeable merchant. Hortensio goes to Petrucio's house and is greeted by Grumio. As they rush to attend Bianca's hasty marriage they're interrupted by the arrival of an old gentleman who's lost his way trying to find his son. It doesn't take long for everyone to realize the gentleman is none other than Vincenzio, Lucentio's real father. Incensed to learn that his son is being married without his consent, he joins Petruchio, Katherine, Grumio and Hortensio on their way to the wedding. Katherine reluctantly goes to church to be married, only to learn through an elaborate pantomime performed by Grumio and Biondello that Petruchio is running late. Finally, a drunk priest arrives with Petruchio, who is dressed as a gondolier. They make a mockery of the wedding but a humiliated Katherine is nonetheless sent off with her new husband by her clueless father, who reminisces fondly about young love. The newlyweds eventually arrive at Petruchio's frigid home in the pouring rain, where he tells her that he lives selflessly in poverty with seven penitents who share his bed and follow elaborate rituals before eating. Katherine nearly goes mad with hunger as Petruchio demands that they follow every step of the ritual before dining on the food delivered by the kitchen mistress, Dorcas. At last, Katherine realizes it's all a joke and she devours her food with joy and laughter. Once sated, she tells Petruchio she's going upstairs to get ready to lose her virginity to him, but Petruchio tells her he has no intention of making love to her until she is well rested and truly wants to be with him. It only makes Katherine more attracted to him, but Petruchio insists that she get a good night's sleep as he privately confesses to feeling the rekindling of his long dormant passion.  The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “SHREW!”, was written by AMY FREED and directed by ART MANKE. Katherine reluctantly agrees to go with Petruchio when he tells her that her father has agreed to marry her off to him. Gremio and Tranio (as Lucentio) immediately try to out-do each other in their bid for Bianca's hand, with Baptista as auctioneer. Tranio wins the contest and is promised Bianca's hand in marriage provided his father (Vincentio the tomato king) comes to the wedding in person. Tranio privately conspires to find a look-alike to pretend to be Vincentio. Meanwhile, Hortensio (still pretending to be Licio the Banjo Tutor) tries to woo Bianca with his instrument until Lucentio (as Cambio the Latin Tutor) interrupts and sends him away. Petruchio tells Hortensio he's come to Padua to find a partner to give him renewed life after grieving the loss of his first wife. Hortensio tells him about Baptista's daughter, Katherine, but warns him that she's quite the shrew. Petruchio realizes he knows her father and is not put off. Hortensio agrees to provide an introduction if, in exchange, Petruchio presents him to Signior Baptista as a tutor for the object of his affection: Bianca. As they agree to the deal, Grumio announces the arrival of two other rivals vying for Bianca: Gremio and Lucentio, now disguised as Cambio. Hortensio introduces them to Petruchio and tells them of his intentions with Katherine, who once coupled will make Bianca available for marriage. Meanwhile, Katherine laments her isolation in her chamber at Baptista's house. She impulsively frees her sister's canaries from their cage to find the freedom she craves. When Bianca enters and sees what Katherine's done, the two fight savagely until Signor Baptista arrives to break it up. He sends Bianca away and scolds Katherine, lamenting his struggles as a single father until he hears the arrival of Gremio, Grumio, Tranio (as Lucentio), Lucentio (as Cambio), Hortensio (as Licio) and Petruchio. Petruchio tells Baptista of his lineage and his desire to woo Katherine. Baptista says she'll never agree but Petruchio persists, introducing Hortensio (as “Licio”), who he says will make inroads as her banjo tutor. The others go to great lengths to outdo each other as they compete for Bianca. Gremio presents a Latin tutor (Lucentio-as-Cambio) and Tranio-as-Lucentio claims to be the son of Vincentio, “the Tomato King”.  Baptista welcomes them all to his house and wishes them luck with his daughters. At Caesar's funeral, the angry crowd demands answers. Brutus speaks first, saying that he loved Rome more than Caesar. Asking the crowd if they would rather be free with Caesar dead or slaves with Caesar alive, the crowd sides with Brutus. But when Antony enters with Caesar's body, things begin to change. He reminds the crowd of Caesar's good qualities and shows them the wounds on Caesar's body where each knife pierced his skin. Then he reads Caesar's will, revealing that Caesar has bequeathed to every citizen his dream of equality. Antony doesn't just win the crowd over to his side, he whips them into an angry mob intent on revenge. As the crowd rages, Antony's guard tells him that Octavius and Lepidus have arrived in Rome and that the conspirators have fled the city. Out in the streets, the mob confronts Cinna the Poet, who they mistake for Cinna the conspirator. She tries to reason with them but they rip her to pieces with their bare hands. Later, Antony meets Octavius and Lepidus to form the new triumvirate of Rome. Together, they choose which conspirators are to die. Once alone with Octavius, Antony questions Lepidus's integrity. Caius Ligarius, an ailing Senator, enters to meet with Brutus, who convinces him to join the assassination plot. Caesar has a hard night as well. When Decius arrives to accompany Caesar to the Temple, Caesar explains that he is staying home on account of Calphurnia's dreams. Decius tells him that the blood in Calphurnia's dreams is a symbol of the new life that Caesar gives his followers and that he will be seen as a coward if he stays home. Cinna nervously joins them, expressing her hope that Brutus will join their conspiracy. Cassius reassures her that Brutus is on board. Later that night, Brutus ruminates at home on the possibility of killing Caesar, deciding that murder is the only way to stop him. His servant, Lucius, announces the arrival of cloaked guests. Brutus welcomes them and Cassius introduces the co-conspirators: Trebonius, Decius Brutus, Caska, Cinna and Metellus Cimber. Together, they plan Caesar's assassination. Cassius suggests that they swear an oath but Brutus says oaths aren't necessary because their plan is noble. They all agree not to include Cicero in their plans. Cassius suggests that they also kill Mark Antony but Brutus advises against it, saying they will appear “too bloody” and that Antony won't be a threat once Caesar is dead. When Cassius worries that Caesar won't come to the Temple, Decius offers to bring him to the Temple herself. Cassius says they'll all go to Caesar's house together instead. Activists assemble outside the Stadium to celebrate Caesar when they're interrupted by Flavius and Murellus, who challenge them to honor not just one man but all the people who helped in the Movement. Once the group breaks up and moves on, Flavius tells Murellus to help him take down all the posters celebrating Caesar. Inside the stadium, Caesar and his entourage–including his closest friend, Antony, and his wife, Calphurnia–are enjoying the thrills of a drag race when they're interrupted by an old woman who warns Caesar to beware the “Ides of March”. Caesar dismisses the woman and tells his entourage to enjoy the race with him. Cassius and Brutus stay behind and share their honest feelings about Caesar. Cassius tells Brutus he thinks Caesar is weak, spurring Brutus to confess he's uneasy with the way things are going in Rome. As they return from the race, Caesar sees the two men talking and tells Antony he thinks Cassius is dangerous. Brutus pulls Caska aside and asks him for details about what took place at the race. Caska describes how Caesar refused the crown three times when it was offered to him, further endearing him to the crowd. Caska also describes how Caesar “fell down” and foamed at the mouth. Brutus suggests that Caesar must have the “falling sickness” (epilepsy). Cassius says Caesar is not like them. Caska goes on to describe how Flavius and Murellus were punished for pulling down placards and posters celebrating Caesar, warning Cassius and Brutus to watch how they treat him. After Brutus and Caska depart, Cassius muses to himself about how easily Brutus can be manipulated. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Phebe confronts Rosalind (“Johnnyseed”) for being rude, leading Sylvius, Phebe, Orlando and Rosalind to expound on the meaning of love as a thunderstorm descends. Rosalind ends their railing by telling them to meet again tomorrow for a wedding where they will all be married to the one they love. Touchstone and Audrey celebrate as two musicians from Duke Senior's camp pass by. Touchstone asks them to sing a song, which they do to great fanfare, but he gets jealous and mocks their music when they express interest in Audrey. The next day, Duke Senior arrives at the wedding site and asks Orlando if he thinks “Johnnyseed” is really capable of doing everything he promises. Rosalind shows up as Johnnyseed and checks with Duke Senior to be sure she'll allow her daughter to marry Orlando. S/he also checks to be sure Phebe will marry Silvius if Johnnyseed isn't available. Duke Senior tells Orlando that she sees some similarities between Johnnyseed and her daughter, Rosalind. When Touchstone and Audrey arrive, Jacques excitedly introduces Touchstone to the Duke. Touchstone entertains the Duke with a witty explanation of how to win an argument. Everything changes when Hymen envelops them all in a magical song, revealing Johnnyseed's true identity as Rosalind. Upon realizing that Johnnyseed is actually a woman who is in love with Orlando, Phebe agrees to marry Silvius. Hymen marries all four couples: Rosalind and Orlando, Celia and Oliver, Audrey and Touchstone and Phebe and Silvius. Jacques is enraptured by Amiens' music and begs for more. Meanwhile, Orlando leaves the elderly and exhausted Adam to find food for them to eat. Later in the day, Duke Senior comes upon Jacques, who is elated by his conversation with a fool he met in the forest (Touchstone). As they sit down to eat with their entourage, Orlando enters, sword drawn, and orders them to give him food. Duke Senior soothes him and welcomes him to their feast. Orlando apologizes for his rude behavior and goes to get Adam. Jacques describes how all the world's a stage. Orlando re-enters with Adam and they all dine together. As Amiens sings another song, Orlando describes his saga to Duke Senior, who replies that she knew and loved Orlando's father, and wants to hear more. Back at the Court, Duke Frederick berates Oliver for failing to kill Orlando. He seizes Oliver's land and property, ordering him to find his brother and bring him back within a week or be banished from the realm forever. Back in the forest of Arden (or Woodstock), Orlando hangs poems to Rosalind on the trees and gives them to everyone he sees. Celia defends Rosalind and vows to stay with her wherever she goes. Together, they plan to leave the city disguised as men. Grumio taunts Katherine (as instructed by his master) until Petruchio and Hortensio arrive for dinner. Petruchio rushes Kate through her meal before welcoming a tailor and haberdasher who have made exquisite clothing for Katherine. Petruchio rejects all their offerings over Katherine's objections, but she begins to catch on to his strategy, realizing that she must play along with everything Petruchio does and be “agreeable” in order to get what she wants. Meanwhile, Biondello has primed Baptista for a visit from Tranio (disguised as Lucentio) and the Pedant (disguised as Lucentio's father, Vincentio). Baptista welcomes them and seals the deal for Lucentio to marry his daughter. On the road back to Baptista's home, Kate and Petruchio keep up their game of opposites until they are met by an old man who is making his way to Padua. He introduces himself as Lucentio's father (the real Vincentio). Petruchio embraces him as family, telling him that his son has just married the sister of his wife. Grumio reaches Petruchio's house ahead of the newlyweds and prepares the servants for their arrival. But nothing could brace them against Petruchio's abuse. He rejects the meals they've made and treats them so poorly that Kate implores him to be more patient. Petruchio insists they go straight to bed, where he lectures her on the virtues of abstinence. Meanwhile, as Tranio keeps up his Lucentio impersonation, Hortensio drops his “Litio '' persona and laments Bianca's affection for Cambio (the real Lucentio). Together, they renounce Bianca and Hortensio declares that he'll seek the affections of a wealthy widow. Free of Hortensio, Tranio celebrates with Bianca and Lucentio until Biondello arrives with the news that he's found a drunk Pedant who will be the perfect person to impersonate Luentio's father, Vincenzio. Tranio and Lucentio work up a plan to fool the Pedant into believing he's in danger in Padua because he's from Mantua but that he'll be safe if he pretends to be Lucentio's father. The groom arrives, disheveled and drunk, on a shabby horse, with his servant by his side. As the wedding finally gets underway, Tranio tells Lucentio they have to find someone to play the part of his father (Vincentio) in order to convince Baptista that Lucentio is as rich as Tranio promised in Episode Three. Gremio emerges from the church and describes Petruchio's lewd behavior at the altar. Petruchio steps out with his bride and announces that they have to be on their way. Katherina pleads with her husband to stay for the celebration but Petruchio refuses. Incensed, she rails at him, at her father and at all the guests, to no avail. The crowd gets rowdy and clamors for the feast. Petruchio puts Kate on his horse and rides off. Tranio (disguised as Lucentio) steals a moment to woo Bianca and Baptista invites everyone to eat cake. Gremio and Tranio (disguised as Lucentio) compete to prove who has the most to offer in the way of riches. Tranio outbids Gremio and Baptista promises him his youngest daughter provided Tranio can prove his father has the resources he claims. Once alone, Tranio conspires to find someone who can pretend to be Lucentio's wealthy father. Back in Baptista's house, the real Lucentio “tutors” Bianca in Latin and secretly reveals his true identity. Romeo and Juliet reluctantly part ways at dawn before her mother enters to tell Juliet to prepare to marry Paris on Thursday. Juliet protests first to her mother and then to her father, who violently berates her for refusing to marry. Lady Capulet takes her husband's side and shames Juliet before departing, leaving her to beg the Nurse to intervene. The Nurse, however, advises Juliet to take Paris's hand and forget about Romeo. Juliet pretends to agree but secretly goes to Friar Laurence's cell, where she runs into Paris, who is seeking the Friar's services for their upcoming wedding. Juliet brushes off Paris's affection and after he departs, laments her woes, threatening to kill herself with a dagger she snatches from the Friar's chamber. The Friar consoles Juliet with a plan for her to drink a potion that will make it look like she is dead and that she will send word of the plan to Romeo. They will then free Juliet from the Montague tomb and together, Romeo and Juliet will escape to Mantua. Back at the Capulet home, the wedding preparations are well underway. Juliet returns and begs her father's forgiveness, then retires to her chamber where she dismisses her mother and Nurse before drinking the potion. The cast assembles at the recording studio to create the Play On podcast series, “Romeo and Juliet”. Two actors take on the roles of Sampson and Peter, members of the house of Capulet, as the rest of the cast pretend to be the people of Verona milling about in the streets. When Balthasar and Abraham show up from the House of Montague, Sampson and Peter pick a fight with them. Benvolio, a friend of the House of Montague, tries to break it up, but Tybalt, a firebrand from the House of Capulet, escalates the violence. The Prince arrives on the scene and finally ends the melee, warning the rival factions that if there's another brawl, they'll pay for it with their lives. In the aftermath, Lady Capulet asks Benvolio about her lovesick son, Romeo. Benvolio promises Lady Capulet he'll try to talk him out of his melancholy. Romeo appears, strumming his guitar, and confesses to Benvolio that his crush, Rosaline, has sworn to live a life of chastity as a nun. Benvolio tells Romeo to start looking for other women to woo, but Romeo says it will only remind him of his heartbreak. Back at Lord Capulet's house, Count Paris asks Juliet's father for her hand in marriage. Lord Capulet is reluctant because of Juliet's age but he invites Paris to a traditional feast he'll be hosting at his house that evening where he will be free to woo Juliet on his own. If she is receptive, Lord Capulet will agree to their marriage. After Paris leaves, Lord Capulet gives his servingman, Peter, a list of guests to invite to the feast. Peter, unable to read, goes out to the street to find someone to read the list of names to him so he knows who to invite. Outside the house, he encounters Romeo and Benvolio, who are passing by. Romeo reads the list of names out loud and comes upon the name of Rosaline. Peter thanks Romeo and Benvolio by inviting them to the feast, provided they're not of the house of Montague. Benvolio convinces Romeo to go in disguise so that he can see not just Rosaline, but all the other beautiful women who will be there. Romeo agrees to go, not to see other women, but to gaze on Rosaline's face. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Othello by William Shakespeare. LET'S GET LIT! Listen to LIT Society: www.LITSocietypod.com Watch LIT Society: https://www.youtube.com/@LitSocietyPod Learn more about your ad choices. Desdemona begs Iago to help her regain Othello's love as Emilia curses whoever it was that turned Othello against her. That evening, during a state dinner in the Vaulted Hall of the Citadel, Roderigo confronts Iago in frustration. Iago manages to convince Roderigo to corner Cassio and lure him into another fight. After the dinner, Othello says goodnight to his guests, then tells Desdemona to go to bed. Alone with Emilia, Desdemona finds some comfort and remembers a song from her childhood. Later, in the alleys near Famagusta's Central Piazza, Iago and Roderigo hide and wait for Cassio. Roderigo attacks him as he passes. They grapple as Iago stealthily leaps out and slices Cassio's leg nearly in half.  Cassio calls out for help as he battles Roderigo, leaving him badly wounded. Othello hears Cassio's cries and quietly applauds Iago's fulfillment of his wish that Cassio be killed. Gratiano and Lodovico arrive on the scene as Iago quietly puts an end to Roderigo's misery. Bianca comes to Cassio's aid. Iago blames her for the ambush before making a public display of his sadness and dismay at seeing Roderigo lying dead. Emilia arrives and offers comfort to Iago before lashing out at Bianca for putting Cassio and her husband in danger. Back in their bedroom, later still, Othello approaches his sleeping wife and kisses her for the last time. Iago's trap works out just as he planned: Roderigo lures the drunken Cassio into a fight that escalates into a brawl, injuring Montano as he and Iago struggle to break it up. Othello arrives and restores order. Iago dutifully and diplomatically reports the sequence of events leading to the brawl to Othello, who immediately expels Cassio from his post. Cassio, distraught, privately expresses his remorse to Iago, who encourages him to seek to restore his position through Desdemona. Cassio is persuaded by Iago's reassurances and arrives at the Citadel the next morning to visit with Desdemona. She receives his supplications with an open heart, promising to do everything she can to get Othello to restore his position of trust and service. Meanwhile, Iago, now Othello's closest advisor, quietly expresses his discomfort at seeing Cassio in Desdemona's company as they pass by. After hearing Desdemona's pleas on behalf of Cassio, Othello presses Iago to explain his misgivings. Iago craftily plants a seed of doubt in Othello's heart, cautioning him to beware of jealousy while encouraging him to keep an eye on Cassio, and on his wife. The Duke leaves it to Othello to decide whether or not to take Desdemona with him to Cypress. Othello puts her in Iagos' care for the journey, with Iago's wife Emilia at her service. Alone with Iago, Roderigo laments his heartbreak, threatening to kill himself in despair. Iago convinces him that Desdemona will eventually get tired of Othello and will be open to Roderigo's affections if he can be patient. Iago inwardly conspires to weave Cassio into his web in his plot to destroy Othello. Later, in Cypress, word arrives that the Turkish fleet has been vanquished thanks to Othello's leadership and to stormy seas. Cassio lands ashore and welcomes Iago, Emilia and Desdemona as they arrive. Othello soon lands with his soldiers and lovingly greets his wife. Once alone again, Iago tells Roderigo that Desdemona is in love with Cassio and that he should pick a fight with him in order to undermine Cassio's reputation, persuading him that without Cassio in the way, Roderigo's chances with Desdemona will be greatly improved. Inwardly, Iago vows to use Roderigo to get rid of Cassio entirely or drive Othello mad with jealousy. That evening, Othello leaves Cassio to guard the watch, urging him to keep a quiet guard as he retires to his chambers with Desdemona. Cassio asks Iago to keep him company. After the couple departs, Iago persuades Cassio to have a drink with him. Cassio protests but Iago convinces him that the rest of the soldiers crave a celebration. Cassio gives in and gets so drunk he can barely stand. As he stumbles away, Iago privately casts aspersions on Cassio's weak constitution to a ranking officer, setting the stage for his downfall. Iago tells Roderigo that he hates Othello for promoting Michael Cassio to the rank of Lieutenant over him. Together, they go to the house of Desdemona's father, Brabantio, to tell him that his daughter has been stolen by Othello. Not wanting his hatred of Othello to be known, Iago steals away before Brabantio sees him. Later, as Iago sits with Othello at his lodgings, Michael Cassio arrives with a message from the Duke informing Othello that he's needed to help fend off an imminent attack by the Turkish fleet. Brabantio arrives at the Duke's palace at the same time as Othello and publicly accuses him of stealing his daughter. Othello defends himself by speaking honestly of how he won Desdemona's affection with tales of his adventures. Desdemona enters to defend her choice in marriage and tells her father before the Duke that her allegiance is to Othello. The Duke is sympathetic to the couple and agrees to consider Desdemona's request that she be allowed to accompany Othello on his voyage to defend Cyprus against the Turks. In the first half, Korey will help us grapple with the seemingly inherent misogyny of the text (is the play misogynist just because the title character is? Or is there another possible reading?). Then, Elyse will lead us through what an Early Modern audience member would have understood about Ophelia's death and Gertrude's part in it. Specifically we will focus on a cultural knowledge that has largely been lost for the modern audience, and the agency granted to these characters through that understanding.  Content warning: we will be discussing abortion, reproductive health, misogyny, and include brief mentions of assault and violence. Please listen with care.  We do not recommend any early modern medical advice. We are not doctors now or in the early modern era.  Also, we may use women, feminine, and female interchangeably to discuss issues pertaining to non-cismale bodies. While we know that people of all genders can be affected by patriarchy as well as become pregnant and need to be able to make their own decisions about reproductive health, we are aligning our language for this episode with that of the early modern writers we are analyzing.  Sources for this episode can be found on the Shakespeare Anyone? feed.
