    Hosted by Tony Darnell. From July 17, 2023. The James Webb Space Telescope Has confirmed its first exoplanet, LHS 475 b, in the southern constellation Octans, using the transit technique. The TESS satellite detected the possible presence of it and JWST's NIRSpec instrument has confirmed the observation. The planet is 99% the diameter of Earth & 91.4% of Earth's mass. So your first hope is that it's a second Earth. The orbital period is only 2 days, though, so it's assuredly tidally locked & very hot. Today's 2 topics: - It is possible the object creating the Tunguska event in Russia 1908 which knocked down 80 million trees over an area about twice the size of New York City was a fragment of a comet or asteroid. The International Asteroid Warning Network 2025 campaign to track Comet 3I/Atlas prepares the world's observatories for the eventual time when a comet fragment has our number on it.   - My Catalina Sky Survey teammate David Rankin was asteroid hunting in the evening twilight with our 60 inch telescope on Mt. Lemmon Arizona when he spotted an unknown object in the constellation of Lyra. The largest telescopes on Earth will likely track David's discovery until it becomes too faint to observe in 2027 and catch it again when it again becomes bright enough to track in 2050. In 2006, astronomers spotted the telltale sign of a supernova detonating in the galaxy NGC 1260, located about 240 million light-years away in the constellation of Perseus. As telescopes around the world turned their collective light-gathering power on the expanding explosion designated as SN 2006gy, they realized they were seeing something very unusual.   This clearly wasn't a regular supernova. It grew to be 100 times brighter than the typical stellar explosion and lasted much much longer.   More than a decade after that cosmic explosion, astronomers finally think they know what series of events led to the release of this much energy, now called a superluminous supernova. A red giant ate a white dwarf. Today's 2 topics: - The Dark Energy Camera on the National Science Foundation's Blanco 4-meter telescope on Cerro Tololo in Chile is taking near Sun twilight images to search for asteroids, hidden in the glare of our Sun, sneaking up on home planet.   - Just before noon on September 1st of 1859 Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson were making sketches of clusters of sunspots when they were nearly blinded by an intense solar flare. 17.6 hours later a geomagnetic storm thought to be caused by a solar coronal mass ejection traveling at some 1,500 miles per second slammed into the magnetic field surrounding our home planet. We missed being hit with a such large coronal mass ejection by only 9 days in July of 2012.     NoirLab - NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory Discovers Thousands of Asteroids

    Scientists at NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, jointly funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, have submitted an unprecedented set of asteroid detections to the IAU Minor Planet Center, including hundreds of distant worlds beyond Neptune and 33 previously unknown near-Earth asteroids. In this podcast, Dr. Mario Juric discusses how these asteroids were discovered and what we can look forward to in the future from the Rubin Observatory.    Bios:  Rob Sparks is in the Communications, Education and Engagement group at NSF's NOIRLab in Tucson, Arizona. Prof. Mario Juric is the P.I. of UW's contribution to the construction of the Rubin Observatory, Senior Fellow at UW's eScience Institute, and director emeritus of UW's Institute for Data-intensive Astrophysics and Cosmology (DiRAC). Once fully operational in 2026, the Rubin Observatory will deliver the largest sky survey in the history of mankind, answering questions from the nature of Dark Energy to discovering potential "killer" asteroids. Prof. Juric led the definition of Rubin data products and oversees the solar system team. Prof. Juric received his PhD in astrophysical sciences from Princeton University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study and a Hubble Fellow at Harvard University. His research is in the area of data-intensive survey astronomy and AI. He developed a range of astronomical software products and techniques, including software for asteroid detection, mapping the Milky Way, novel astronomical databases, and cloud-based astronomical data analysis systems. Prof. Juric discovered what was at the time the largest known structure in the Universe (the Sloan Great Wall; with J. Richard Gott), a dwarf galaxy colliding with the Milky Way (the Virgo Overdensity; with Z. Ivezic), and over a hundred asteroids (including 22899 Alconrad, the smallest known main-belt binary asteroid; with Korado Korlevic). Today's 2 topics: - On a busy night of asteroid hunting with the 90 inch, University of Arizona's Steward Observatory Bok telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona, my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Vivian Carvajal discovered 13 new Earth approaching objects. One of them now known as 2025 TF immediately got her attention as it streaked through the constellation of Pegasus. Another space rock 2020 VT4 came about 30 miles closer to the surface of our home planet giving 2025 TF second place as a grazing non impactor.   - My Catalina Sky Survey teammate Vivian Carvajal was asteroid hunting in the constellation of Eridanus with the 90 inch, University of Arizona's Bok telescope on Kitt Peak when she was treated to an amazing sight. Well, the universe is filled with stars, planets and galaxies, but sure all the big gaps between those things are mostly empty. Although, let's not forget dark matter. It's likely to have a wider and denser distribution than visible matter, since we think there's four times more of it than there is of light matter - but all we can really say is 'we think' since we can't see dark matter and we don't actually know what it is.   Dear Cheap Astronomy – Just how strange is reality? So, this is an unusual question insofar as the word strange implies a divergence from normal - whereas reality is by definition normal. Therefore, whatever strangeness it may possess is mostly defined by our own subjective expectations. Every day the Sun comes up and when we make a cup of tea, the water still boils the way that it has ever other day and the tea bags and milk you bought the day before haven't spontaneously dematerialized overnight. My team the University of Arizona's Catalina Sky Survey operates 5 telescopes in the mountains around Tucson, Arizona.     Hosted by Dr. Jacinta Delhaize, Dr. Tshiamiso Makwela, Dr. Daniel Cunnama & François Campher In this episode, Jacinta chats with Dr. Simon de Wet about the discoveries he made during his Master's and PhD theses regarding mysterious gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Meanwhile, the team takes a trip back to the Pendulum Room for a final farewell to the old studio.   Gamma Ray Bursts are some of the brightest bursts of high energy light in space, usually originating from the collapse of a massive star or two neutron stars colliding. Both of these processes create a black hole, which ejects very bright light into space. GRBs happen frequently, but far away from us!   Simon has begun his post-doc in Copenhagen where he will continue working on transient astronomy. Transient astronomy involves studying objects that vary in their nature. Simon talks us through the accidental discovery of GRBs, how we discovered that GRBs are from very distant galaxies. He also mentions that GRBs originate from collapsing stars as well as the formation of a black hole.   Simon's PhD work focused on trying to capture the optical afterglow of GRBs using the MeerLICHT telescope in Sutherland. He found that the light curves of the optical afterglows observed did not behave as expected. At a hyperbolic velocity of 130,000 mph it is the fastest interstellar visitor ever measured.   - On a recent clear night my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Hannes Groller was asteroid hunting with the Steward Observatory 90 inch Bok telescope on Kitt Peak, Arizona when he discovered 8 natural visitors to our neighborhood. Telescopes around the world began to track and determine the natures these asteroids. Hosted by Chris Beckett & Shane Ludtke, two amateur astronomers in Saskatchewan who enjoy teaching astronomy classes and showing the public views through their telescopes. actualastronomy@gmail.com   Some binocular astronomy targets: - M40 - 9.6 Magnitude 1.7' This is a pair of faint stars located in Ursa Major. They are a tough find in binoculars, and you will be challenged to split them with binoculars. In telescopes, they appear to be an identical pair of stars and easy to split even at low power.   - M108 - 10th Mag. 4x1.7' - Edge on, rich in mottled detail This galaxy will appear as a thin streak of light in telescopes, there is a definite brightening towards the middle. M108 is a very tough object for the largest binoculars.   - M97 - Owl Nebula - 9.8 mag. 3.4x3.3' This planetary nebula in Ursa Major, also called the Owl nebula, appears as a fairly large, round, hazy patch of light in a telescope. It is in the same field of view as M108 at low to medium powers. Use averted vision to see the faint glow of the Owl nebula through binoculars. Lorde Ross drawing through his massive scope.   - M109 Theta like spiral - 9th mag. 11x4' This spiral galaxy in Ursa major appears as a small, oval patch of light. It can be found in the same field of view as Gamma UMa at low to medium power in a telescope. Use large binoculars under good conditions for a chance of seeing this one.   - M106 - large spiral 19x8', Mag. 8.4 This galaxy in Canes Venatici appears as an oval patch of light, larger than M109, with a fairly bright core. A tough, but possible binocular target.   - M95, 96 &105 10th magnitude galaxies in Leo M95 This galaxy appears as a faint round patch of light with a bright nucleus.  Look for M96 in the same low power telescope field as M95. Another round patch of light, slightly larger and brighter than M95, it too has a stellar core. M105  is a small elliptical galaxy, and can be found in the same low power field as M96. It look like a small fuzzy star. M105 has a close companion galaxy, NGC 3384, which is only slightly smaller and fainter than M105. To prevent confusion, M105 is the closer of the pair to M96. Not possible in binoculars, except maybe with averted "imagination".   - Leo Trio - 3 9th magnitude galaxies M65 A small, but relatively bright galaxy in Leo. It is an elongated oval patch of light with a bright stellar core. A tough, but possible binocular target.   - M66 A close companion galaxy to M65, it can be seen in the same low to medium power field as M65. M66 is another oval patch of light, brighter and slightly wider than M65. Another possible binocular target. While you are here be sure to look for the a thin streak of light which is the galaxy NGC 3628. One of the great accomplishments of the Apollo missions was to bring home hundreds of kilograms of lunar rock. Suddenly, geologists had a lifetime's worth of lunar samples captured from several different spots across the Moon. These rocks and dust have been under continuous analysis since the Apollo 11 astronauts came home over 50 years ago.   And they're still making discoveries. Scientists have samples of the Sun's solar wind, particles from a comet's tail, a few grams from an asteroid, with more coming shortly. Dear Cheap Astronomy – Why does a photon travel at speed c, part1 It may sound a bit strange to ask why light travels at the speed of light, but that's because c isn't really the speed of light – it's really a measure of the relationship between distance (or space) and time. It's become customary to call c the speed of light, but in reality light moves at different and slower speeds through air, water or glass, it only moves at c in a vacuum.   Dear Cheap Astronomy – Why does a photon travel at speed c, part1 Last week we grappled with the issue of why light is able to move at the speed c, which is around 300,000 km/sec in a vacuum. Some key points we landed were that c is actually the fastest speed that anything can move and that light isn't the only thing that moves at c, gravity does too.     Astronomers have discovered one of the most chemically primitive stars ever identified — an ancient stellar relic that preserves the chemical imprint of the very first stars in the Universe.     UNAWE Space Scoop - A Rule-Breaking Supermassive Black Hole

    https://spacescoop.org/en/scoops/2602/a-rule-breaking-supermassive-black-hole/ Astronomers have spotted a supermassive black hole, or SMBH, that is breaking all the rules! Well, one rule anyway. It's called eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey, or eFEDS, J084222.9+001000. Whew! It is also called ID830, don't ask me why, so that's what I'll call it. Way easier!   Anyway… Most galaxies have a supermassive black hole at their center. They grow by sucking down clouds of gas & dust nearby - like a powerful vacuum cleaner in space. As the black hole, uh, eats, the gas swirls inward and heats up the surroundings, making it 'glow' in all kinds of light.    Sometimes astronomers see this as a bright flare in X-ray light, and sometimes as jets, glowing in radio light. There is a speed limit, of a sort, for how fast SMBHs can eat, called the Eddington limit. It's named after Sir Arthur Eddington who first proposed this natural limit to stellar luminosity.   If they eat too fast, the gas heats up and the energy released by the hot gas, lots of different kinds of light radiation, begins to push back on the incoming gas flowing in behind it, slowing things down.    Kinda like a traffic jam.   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! Today's 2 topics: - The planets, millions of asteroids, tens of thousands of comets, distant icy worlds, and countless other bits and pieces of material orbit the Sun. A group of such co-orbiting objects is called the Taurid complex or swarm. It consists of Comet 2P/Enke, a number of near Earth asteroids, and the meteor stream which produces the Taurid meteor shower every October and November.   - 50 years ago scientists found that Chlorofluorocarbons or CFC chemicals in widespread use in refrigeration, air conditioning , and hair spray were beginning to damage the ozone layer in the Earth's stratosphere which blocks harmful Solar UVB radiation from reaching the surface. The world wide response was the Montreal Protocol banning these chemicals from being released into the atmosphere. It saved millions of humans from dying of skin cancer.
